Shawn Levy Talks Plans For Hugh Jackman In Real Steel

13 November 2009 6:13 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Hugh Jackman is currently arguing with Daniel Craig every night on Broadway in the play A Steady Rain, but he's not going to be going from there directly back to his Wolverine claws. In the meantime he's got his eye on Real Steel, a movie that has several crazy things going for it. 1) It is directed by Night at the Museum's Shawn Levy. 2) It is about robot boxing. 3) Its director is comparing it to Rocky. Yes, Levy is apparently fearless and is comparing Real Steel to the most famous boxing movie of all time. In an interview with Sci Fi Wire, Levy said, "It's faithful to the [original Richard Matheson] story in that that story was very much about a down-on-his-luck, slightly desperate journeyman who works in this robot boxing sport and who is desperately needing redemption and one last shot. The movie is more Rocky than Transformers." Levy also ... »

Gemma Arterton Says Working on Prince of Persia Has Been "Brilliant"

12 November 2009 7:15 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

British actress Gemma Arterton has become the "it" girl of action movies recently. First, she starred alongside Daniel Craig as Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace, then she landed the role of Sam Worthington's love interest in Clash of the Titans, and soon she will be appearing as Princess Tamina opposite Jake Gyllenhaal's Prince Dastan in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

In a recent interview with Coming Soon, Arterton discussed how working on such high-profile projects is changing her life.

I'm really starting to feel it. Things have changed very quickly. Usually, I can kind of get on with my work and not think about it but it's actually having an effect on my life now and that's fine. I just have to kind of get used to it I suppose but it has been really, really quick and hey, why not, you know? If it's gonna happen, »

The Play’s the Thing for Aniston, Ashton, Demi, Brooke, and More

10 November 2009 2:00 PM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Too many stars to fit in one frame: Anthony Mackie, Brooke Shields, Jennifer Aniston, David Cross, Liev Schrieber, Naomi Watts, Jeremy Sisto, Emmy Rossum, Julia Stiles, and Gaby Hoffmann are among the cast members taking a curtain call after performing in the 24 Hour Plays. Kevin Mazur/Getty Images. It has been an unusually starry fall on Broadway—Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig in A Steady Rain, Jude Law in Hamlet, and, later this month, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury in A Little Night Music, just to name a few. But rarely has there been such assemblage of big names on one Broadway stage as there was last night at the American Airlines Theater. Among the performers were Jennifer Aniston, David Cross, Billy Crudup, Rosario Dawson, John Krasinski, Ashton Kutcher, Eva Mendes, Demi Moore, Rosie Perez, Sam Rockwell, Liev Schrieber, Brooke Shields, Julia Stiles, Amber Tamblyn, and Naomi Watts. Mel Gibson too short to play James Bond (IrishCentral)

10 November 2009 5:52 AM, PST | IrishCentral | See recent IrishCentral news »

Mel Gibson was too short to play James Bond! That's the astonishing news coming out from Hollywood this week. Gibson, who recently celebrated the arrival of his eighth child Lucia with Russian girlfriend Lyudmilla Chernukha, was deemed too tiny for Bond by producer Albert R ‘Cubby’ Broccoli. Gibson, who clocks in at 5ft 9in frame is just over four inches shorter than Irish star Pierce Brosnan who is 6ft 1.25 in. In addition, Broccoli felt Gibson was too famous for the role. Scriptwriter Tom Mankiewicz - who wrote James Bond favourites "The Man With The Golden Gun" and "Live And Let Die" - said: “At one point Mel Gibson wanted to play Bond. And Cubby was against it. Cubby first of all had a thing about tall people. “Bond had to be tall. And so Mel Gibson was too short. But he was a big star. "Somebody at United Artists said to me, »

The defeated champion Nikolai Valuev needs a new career. Surely he was born to be a Bond villain

Forget David and Goliath. For most movie fans watching the heavyweight title fight between David Haye and Nikolai Valuev on Saturday night, the first mythical conflict to spring to mind was Rocky and Drago. Not since the 1985 showdown between Sylvester "Adrieeennnne!" Stallone and Dolph "pretty boy" Lundgren, have we seen such a mismatch of plucky western underdog and eastern bloc fighting machine. Admittedly, you have to make some allowances. Like the fact that Haye is British, not American. And Valuev's training routine probably didn't involve working out in a top secret muscle lab while Soviet technicians monitored his readouts, but he was praised by Vladimir Putin as a "national hero", so there's at least a frisson of cold war tension. Nor could you mistake him for a male model like Lundgren. But with his hulking 7ft 2in, »

Winona Ryder joins cast of sexy thriller ‘Black Swan’

9 November 2009 4:53 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Weird. I was just thinking, “You know what Black Swan needs? Some Winona Ryder.”

Poof! Wish granted. The Girl, Interrupted star will join the cast of Darren Aronofsky’s (The Wrestler, Pi) Black Swan. The 38-year-old will play Beth, a dancer who is entering the twilight of her professional dance career.

Joining Ryder will be Vicent Cassel and Barbara Hershey.

Black Swan focuses on a veteran New York City ballet dancer (Portman) who finds herself in an intensely competitive situation with a rival (Kunis), who might be a ghost or figment of Portman’s character’s imagination.

The film has made some earlier buzz due to an “extreme” sex scene between Portman and Kunis.

Production on Black Swan will begin this month and will hit theaters sometime in 2010.

Kate Winslet Worth 0 Million To Britain

8 November 2009 10:53 PM, PST | icelebz.com | See recent iCelebz news »

Kate Winslet is worth £60 million [0 million] to Britain. The "Reader" actress was the first celebrity to be "audited" by the U.K. Film Council, which looked to put a specific value on the country's creative industries and chose the English star as the first example for her success abroad and public profile.

David Steele, the head of research and statistics at the U.K. Film Council, explained: "When an actor achieves international prominence, they have a general effect of boosting their country of origin that works its way through television appearances, advertising and celebrity news."

A friend said Kate - who won the Best Actress Oscar for "The Reader" this year - found it "both flattering and very funny."

The audit assessed salaries, profile and "box-office effect" on tourism and entertainment sales to find the figure, which has been nicknamed "the Winslet algorithm" and may now be used to work out »

This Week on Stage: 'The Understudy,' 'Idiot Savant,' and 'Nightingale'

7 November 2009 5:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

This week saw the too-rapid close of the Neil Simon revival Brighton Beach Memoirs on Broadway, as well as the opening of three Off Broadway productions: The Understudy, starring Justin Kirk, Julie White, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar (above); Idiot Savant with Willem Dafoe; and Nightingale with Lynn Redgrave. Melissa Bernardo gave a B+ to The Understudy but dinged it for the cast's somewhat mixed on-stage chemistry. Thom Geier calls Idiot Savant "one strange, head-scratching evening" and gives it a C+. As for Lynn Redgrave's one-woman show, Nightingale, I gave it a C and took issue with the production because "the »
