When Chancellor Elena Vernham (Kate Winslet) addresses the citizens of her unnamed Central European country, she doesn’t sound like a politician. “My loves,” she coos in a plummy, posh accent, further softened by a hint of a lisp. “I bless you all, and I bless our love. Always.” Seven years into her reign, this signoff suggests that Vernham has transcended the role of head of state, or even autocratic strongwoman. The propaganda videos she records from her palace, a luxury hotel turned personal residence, are closer to guided meditations than ideological sermons. The relationship between this ruler and her subjects, Vernham seems to believe, is more intimate and emotional than mere governance.
Before creating “The Regime,” the six-episode HBO series set in Vernham’s impenetrable echo chamber, writer Will Tracy worked on “Succession.” Just as Logan Roy was a composite of various Irl oligarchs, Vernham can’t be traced to any single inspiration.

With the actor’s strike finally over, Matthew Lillard can finally talk about the plum role he has in Five Nights at Freddy’s. In a recent THR interview, Lillard mentioned being thrilled about how fans have reacted to the film, noting:
“Being 53 years old — and being around the block a couple times — I have a much deeper sense of appreciation in this moment than I probably have ever had because I didn’t expect it. I realize that these opportunities don’t come around that often. It’s been a really rich, joyful moment because I can sort of sit back and appreciate it on a deeper level.”
Lillard’s character, who has a rich mythology in the game, could well wind-up being a recurring presence in the Five Nights at Freddy’s world, especially with the film such a huge hit in theaters and on Peacock. But, it turns...

Once upon a time, a simpler time, when kids had attention spans that lasted longer then a thirty second tik-tok video and people drove their cars while paying attention to the road and not with their heads down scrolling through instagram videos, a world before everything we could ever want or need to know was right in our pocket. For some of you, that world sounds like ancient times, but for those of us of a certain age, that world really wasn’t so long ago. Allow me to take you back to the year 1995 when a new-ish thing called the Internet was becoming more mainstream (here would be a good spot to drop in that Katie Couric/ Bryant Gumble clip “What is the internet?”) It was a time when you would have to ask your parents to not use the phone for twenty minutes so you could get online...

WikiLeaks, the online whistleblower, is growing ever more daring. Three days after signing a deal with Piratpartiet, the Swedish pirate-friendly political party, it's put up a password-protected, encrypted file on its site that anyone can download--or host. Until the password is entered, however, it's unreadable. All of this is very WikiLeaks--mysterious, slightly threatening--and, according to the editor of 2600 The Hacker Quarterly, could pose a serious challenge to the legal system.
"If you release it in encrypted form, nobody really knows if you've released it or not, or even what the material is," Emmanuel Goldstein told the BBC. "Then, if something happens to you, all it takes is the revelation of a simple, spoken phrase known by a select group of people and everyone who has this mystery file now has all of the secrets."
While it's obviously bad news for the world's governments, military, and security agencies, it can only...
