'Law Abiding Citizen' Director F. Gary Gray Calls 'Julius' Adaptation His 'Peter Jackson Project'

16 October 2009 1:29 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Way back in August of 2008, we first brought you the news that Antony Johnston's graphic novel "Julius"—a modern-day reimagining of William Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar"—was headed to the big screen with "Law Abiding Citizen" director F. Gary Gray behind the camera.

There hasn't been much to report about the project since the initial announcement, so when Gray dropped by Splash Page HQ to chat about "Law Abiding Citizen," we asked him for an update on the adaptation.

"We're still developing it. We're still in the stage of finding a writer," Gray told MTV News. "That project is a huge project and we have to get that right."

According to Gray, fans of the graphic novel will likely notice some changes when the adaptation eventually gets to the screen.

"I had re-envisioned it, and it's going to have a slightly different feel than the graphic novel," he explained. »

Muse - The Resistance

12 October 2009 8:31 AM, PDT | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

My name is Andrew Whitman, and I am a Muse fan. The admission doesn't come easily. I realize what it means; I have outed myself as a hopeless dweeb. I don't care. I also have a bit of a soft spot for Yes, early Radiohead, U2, Rush, Queen, and every other melodramatic musical precursor this album conjures. You want understated? Look, they don't wear clown makeup or breathe fire. That's the best I can do.

The Resistance, the latest from the Devon, UK trio, ups the already supersized ante. Not content with releasing merely overblown songs, Muse here adopts the most overblown of all musical genres: the prog-rock concept album. And who really cares if the concept is a bit muddled? In the Muse version of reality, the world has been hijacked by faceless corporations, and only a daring, courageous boy and girl dare to resist the commercial onslaught. Opening single "Uprising, »

Robert Towne: The Hollywood Interview

Screenwriter and filmmaker Robert Towne.

Forget It Bob, It’S Chinatown

Robert Towne looks back on Chinatown’s 35th anniversary

By

Alex Simon

The haunting trumpet wailing plaintively over the closing credits. The bandage covering star Jack Nicholson’s nose. The best last line of a movie, ever: “Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown"; all elements of a film now regarded by scholars, critics and cinefiles alike as one of the greatest pieces of American celluloid ever made. Chinatown was a collaboration between a who’s-who of ‘70s film icons. Directed by Roman Polanski, produced by Robert Evans, written by Robert Towne, starring Nicholson and Faye Dunaway, shot by John Alonso, and scored by Jerry Goldsmith, Chinatown was nominated for 11 Academy Awards in 1974, but brought home only one: for its writer. Robert Towne was barely 40, and Chinatown his first produced original screenplay, his previous efforts having been literary adaptations, such as 1973’s The Last Detail. »

Exclusive Interview with Composer Claudio Gizzi

6 October 2009 1:14 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In Paul Morrissey’s eccentric and utterly unhinged 1974 Eurotrash classic Blood For Dracula (often erroneously credited as the brainchild NYC art guru Andy Warhol), the opening imagery of Dracula (played by iconic German weirdo Udo Kier) painting his face kabuki white has always haunted me.  The sequence is the spine and soul of the picture, showing the good Count as a tired, lonely showman who has long been forgotten by time and by the audience he once terrified.

And as eerily gorgeous as that bit of credit crawling business is, it’s the delicate piano waltz playing in the background that truly sells it.

Like Morrissey’s 3D companion film Flesh For Frankenstein the music for Blood was composed by Italian musician Claudio Gizzi. It’s orchestral, elegant, full of melancholy mourning and sadness. And truthfully it’s that dichotomy between the excessive gore, sex and general insanity on screen with Gizzi’s sophisticated, »

First Look: Wes Anderson's 'Fantastic Mr. Fox'

Not long ago the first image from Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox arrived online and was quickly removed, but now the French website filmsactu has nabbed the first two images from Fox France and, well, here they are. Starring the voices of Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman, Adrien Brody and Anjelica Huston among others, the film reunites your typical Anderson cronies and adds a few more to the filmmaker's ever-growing list of regulars.

Based on Ronald Dahl's book of the same name, the film follows Mr. Fox (Clooney) and his family who are targeted by wealthy, angry farmers after the fox steals their chickens, ducks and turkeys from right underneath their noses. This is the first adaptation for Anderson, who up until this point has collaborated with a handful of close friends (Owen Wilson, Noah Baumbach, Roman Coppola) on original stories. »

First Photo from Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox

13 July 2009 9:39 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Well there's not a heck of a lot to say about this as of yet, but the good folks over at JoBlo [1] managed to score the very first image from Wes Anderson's upcoming animated film, Fantastic Mr. Fox. I've been pretty interested in this project seeing as it is Anderson's first attempt at adapting someone else's work, but also because it will use stop motion animation. I guess that's the thing about this image though: it actually just looks like CG. To be fair, the picture is pretty small, so it's hard to make out much in the way of detail. Based on the children's book by Roald Dahl, the movie's voice cast includes George Clooney and Meryl Streep as Mr. and Mrs. Fox, plus a who's who of previous Wes Anderson collaborators that include Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman, Anjelica Huston and Roman Coppola (among »

Tetro Review

8 June 2009 10:33 AM, PDT | Spout.com | See recent Spout news »

“What has happened to our family? We were so promising!” So ponders one elder member of the artistic clan at the center of Francis Ford Coppola’s Tetro –– and so, one imagines, the film’s detractors will be eager to snark about the director and his filmmaking progeny. Ffc is oft-mocked for having whored himself out to studios in the 90s, only to squander the generosity of an indie arm with his pretentious “return to personal filmmaking,” 2007’s Youth Without Youth. As for the younger Coppola generation, Roman went from making highly-cinematic music videos to directing the promising mod homage Cq, but has since apparently done little but shoot second until for his dad, sister and Wes Anderson. After winning an Oscar for the beyond-slight Lost in Translation, Sofia Coppola made a personal gesture of her own with the masterfully stylish Marie Antoinette — which s ... »
