Spider-Man: The Animated Series and Batman: The Animated Series were probably the best animated shows of the ’90s. While the former is a Marvel show, the latter is a part of the Dcau. Although it has been years since the last seasons of these shows aired, fans still go back to them from time to time.
Besides being one of the best animated shows out there, Spider-Man: The Animated Series was the first project to introduce the Spider-Man Multiverse which inspired numerous comics and other projects in the 21st century. On the other hand, Batman: The Animated Series was so good that it won several Daytime Emmy Awards and even a Primetime Emmy Award.
While there is no competition between the two because both have excelled in their own way, here are 3 reasons why each of the two shows is great.

This X-Men ’97 article contains spoilers.
“They shall know my Inferno!” cries the Goblin Queen early in X-Men ’97‘s third episode. Now, the Goblin Queen has had a rough day, which began with her thinking that she was the real Jean Grey and ended with the revelation that she was a clone created by evil (but fashionable) geneticist Mr. Sinister. Her heel turn came so quick that she really didn’t have time to workshop her villain monologues.
Whatever the shortcomings in her baddie banter, the Goblin Queen makes up for it with evil powers. She immediately begins transforming the X-Mansion into a Hellscape, complete with a giant head in an elevator and a vision of Xavier as a monster from the anime classic Akira. Wild as these transformations are, they have nothing on the comic book storyline that inspired it.

Why the very idea is enough to send any superhero fan’s heart aflutter. And make a Sony executive’s bank account howl in hunger.
That’s undoubtedly why Sony has tried so hard to make a Sinister Six movie happen, first in The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, and then in its Spidey-less Spider-Verse with Venom, Morbius, and Madame Web. DC and Marvel have given the world some of the greatest characters in pop culture: Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, and D-Man. So if the two companies were to put their heads together and come up with a character that they could share, that character would be the greatest comic creation of all time, right?
Well, if that’s what you think, then let me introduce you to Axel Asher, aka Access. And let me tell you right from the beginning, that he is not the greatest comic creation of all time.
A History of Crossovers
Before going too far into the history of the greatest comic find of his generation, we have to put the distinction between the big two into their proper context. “With great power comes great responsibility” might be the most important line in superhero fiction. It crystalizes a theme present in the best superhero stories even before Spider-Man‘s debut in 1962’s Amazing Fantasy #15, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s Superman tales and Bill Parker, and C.C. Beck’s Captain Marvel adventures. The line transforms superhero stories from mere power fantasies to stories about service and care, about empowering others instead of consolidating power for yourself.
So when a member of Las Arañas, Madame Web‘s ill-advised magical natives, tells Cass Webb (Dakota Johnson), “When you take on the responsibility, great power will come,” it’s clear the production team has lost the plot.
Director S.J. Clarkson, who co-wrote the script with Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Claire Parker, and certainly a boardroom of IP lawyers, intends the line to break Cass out of her...

Animation and fantasy go hand in hand. In the 80s, there was a boom of fantasy epics in the land of cartoons that had nothing to do with the House of Mouse and everything to do with adult content. This was helped along from the previous decade by creator Ralph Bakshi, who had started things off with Fritz the Cat and would be the first to do a feature-length version of Lord of The Rings with his animated film and the trippy flick Wizards (and later – the cult film Cool World).
During our fave decade, Anime would find a welcoming home in the US with several classics that would be released during that time. Canada would also get into the mix with Heavy Metal (which we’ll get to.) But Ralph Bakshi decided to join forces with one of the biggest names in fantasy art for a new entry into...

It took a very long time for Hollywood to take Marvel Comics seriously, and "Howard the Duck" gets a lot of the blame for that. By the mid-1980s, films like "Star Wars" and "Superman: The Movie" had incited a proper revolution in the film industry. Genres that previously weren't big hits — financially or critically — didn't just make lots of money, but they made movie stars out of actors nobody had previously heard of, and even won awards. All of a sudden, sci-fi/fantasy and pulp heroes weren't just "kids' stuff." They were surefire recipes for four-quadrant success.
But even though Marvel was churning out superhero TV shows like nobody's business — not just Saturday morning cartoons but primetime hits like "The Incredible Hulk" and "Spider-Man: The Animated Series" — Marvel's first big budget foray into live-action theatrical features wasn't based on one of their most iconic costumed crimefighters. Instead it was "Howard the Duck,...

The voice commands someone to go back further, this time to images of a little girl racing a go-cart. “Who is this person?” asks the voice, speaking for most of the viewers as well.
The confusion of the speaker, later revealed to be the Skrull Talos, comes from his expectation to see memories of Hala, the assumed homeworld of the Kree warrior Vers. He doesn’t realize that Vers was born on Earth as Carol Danvers. After Talos unlocks her memories, Carol recovers her identity and her full power, eventually becoming the superhero Captain Marvel.

When it comes to comics, superheroes are inexplicably linked to monsters. Horror comics existed before the superhero boom launched with Action Comics #1 (1938), and continued going strong after the caped crowd flopped following World War II. When Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and Stan Lee launched the Marvel Universe in the early 60s, they did so tentatively, keeping Spider-Man, Hulk, and the Fantastic Four close to the sci-fi and monster comics they made throughout the fifties.
As unlikely as the pairing may seem, superheroes and monsters make for a peanut butter and chocolate combination. Not only do monsters provide the overpowered villains required for superhero fights, as the current Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong demonstrates, but they also give characters like Spider-Man and Batman a chance to show off their heroism in the darkest of times.
So if you’re looking for some spooky superhero stories for your Halloween season, these 13 comics will do the trick.

The late Len Wein was one of the most prolific comic book writers of his day. Like many of his contemporaries (especially Marv Wolfman and Gerry Conway), he bounced back and forth between the "Big Two" comic companies, Marvel and DC. Wein left his mark at both, co-creating characters like Swamp Thing and Lucius Fox at DC and the next generation of X-Men at Marvel.
However, his most famous creation is without a doubt Wolverine. Lein worked with then Marvel Editor-In-Chief Roy Thomas and artist John Romita Sr.; the trio debuted Logan in 1974's "Incredible Hulk" issue #180 (written by Wein). In creating Wolverine, Wein wanted to give whoever wrote "X-Men" next a new mutant character. As it turns out, that writer was Wein himself when he crafted "Giant-Size X-Men" #1 with artist Dave Cockrum the following year. Wein eventually ceded the ongoing "X-Men" series to writer Chris Claremont, but...

Peter is back in the sequel, "Across The Spider-Verse" and this time he's got someone coming with him — his and Mj's daughter, Mayday Parker, who has inherited her father's spider powers.

Jon Bernthal is getting his skull vest out of the closet. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bernthal has signed on to reprise the role of vigilante Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, in the upcoming Disney+ Marvel series “Daredevil: Born Again.”
Bernthal previously played the iconic anti-hero in the Netflix series “Daredevil,” as well as in his own eponymous series, which ran for two seasons on the streaming service from 2017 to 2019.

Some say a hero is only as good as his villain and Batman has the best Rogues Gallery in DC Comics. Bringing all these Big Bads into a new medium for "Batman: The Animated Series" -- which still holds up for many as the definitive take on the Caped Crusader -- wasn't easy. Kevin Conroy's Batman (who will be sorely missed) was the beating heart of "Batman: The Animated Series," with the actor not only expertly portraying the Dark Knight, but Bruce Wayne as well. Our hero faced plenty of unforgettable villains throughout the course of the series, including Man-Bat, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, and of course, Mark Hamill's Joker.

I spent a decade of my life happily working in a comic shop, so I got used to people asking for my recommendations. Most of the time, customers were happy to try out the books I suggested. However, my toughest sell was always one of the comics I was most passionate about: Swamp Thing.
Alan Moore's seminal run on the book — more on that later — was something I discovered very early on in my own reading journey due to the writer's undeniable impact on Neil Gaiman, who served as my introduction to comics via "The Sandman." Once I had finished every Gaiman book I could find, I got started on the work of Alan Moore, whom he had cited as a major influence.
Of course, I loved "Watchmen" and "V For Vendetta," both undisputed classics, but it was Moore's work on "Swamp Thing" that truly blew my teenage mind.

"Werewolf By Night" has arrived on Disney+ just in time for the spooky season and luckily, it rules/ The Marvel special stars Gael Garcia Bernal as Jack Russell, a man who transforms into the titular beast under the light of the full moon. Other notable Marvel characters appearing in the special are Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly) and Ted Sallis (Carey Jones), aka Man-Thing — who looks amazing by the way. The special is a bold swing for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, something that has felt increasingly rare as of late, and director/composer Michael Giacchino has brought this formerly unexplored corner of Marvel Comics to brilliant life.

“Werewolf by Night,” Marvel Studios’ Halloween-themed mini-movie, has just hit Disney+. And it’s something to howl about.
A black-and-white creature feature directed by frequent Marvel Studios collaborator Michael Giacchino and styled after similar movies from the 1940s, it introduces us to the title character, whose human name is Jack Russell (get it?) and who, in the film, is played by the great Gael Garcia Bernal. Jack is brought to a remote estate with fellow monster hunters, where he is tasked with bagging the biggest, most fearsome beast yet. But can he accomplish his goal while also concealing his true identity?
That’s the big question. But today we are here to talk about an even bigger question: who is that big monster that everybody is after? What is his deal and where could he fit into the MCU going forward?
Major spoilers for “Werewolf by Night” follow. If you haven’t watched yet,...

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand, stranger and stranger characters from the bottomless depths of the Marvel Comics universe are going to begin appearing. At its inception in 2008, the MCU still took place in a world that struck at least a passing resemblance to our own. Sometime in 2016, however, when Scott Derrickson's "Doctor Strange" announced that magic is real, the MCU effectively left much of its connection to the real world behind. By 2022, so many extraordinary super-beings and omnipotent space deities have been introduced that nothing seems impossible anymore.
Michael Giacchino's new TV special "Werewolf by Night," now available on Disney+, takes a swing that, in earlier years, might have been considered bold for the MCU. As it so happens, monsters are real in the Marvel universe, and they have secret societies and superhero teams of their own. This article contains spoilers for "Werewolf by Night."
"Werewolf by Night," the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is being presented as a "special presentation." This means, one can presume, that its events won't be as heavily incorporated into the rest of the MCU in the same fashion its theatrical counterparts are. "Werewolf By Night" comes from a specially branded corner of Marvel Comics usually reserved for monsters, demons, and other supernatural creatures of the night. Ghost Rider, Blade, and Morbius the Living Vampire also hail from this corner. Werewolf by Night was originally created in 1972 by Roy Thomas, Jean Thomas, Gerry Conway, and Mike Ploog. The character is a man named Jack Russell (nothing to do with the breed of terrier) who, true to his name, becomes a wolf man every full moon. Fittingly, the original "Werewolf by Night" comics were written by a man named Marv Wolfman.

In the dead of night, at a remote mansion tucked far away from prying eyes, a group of men and women convene. They’re appearances are all the more ghastly by the room’s atmospheric lighting; some seem to have not slept or seen sunlight for days. Each person eyes the others warily. Servants come and go. Finally, a person at the center of the room rises and addresses the assembled. There is a mission, completed before the sun rises. Whomever emerges victorious from this contest of wills shall not...

By this time next week, Marvel’s first Halloween Special will be upon us. Werewolf By Night may seem like a one-off, but Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige explained in a recent featurette that the world they’re introducing “will ultimately become quite important to the future of the MCU.” You can check out the Werewolf By Night featurette for yourself above!
Werewolf By Night takes place on a dark and somber night as a secret cabal of monster hunters emerge from the shadows and gather at the foreboding Bloodstone Temple following the death of their leader. In a strange and macabre memorial to the leader’s life, the attendees are thrust into a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic—a hunt that will ultimately bring them face to face with a dangerous monster. “We wanted to explore entirely new characters and entirely new sides of the MCU with this unusual,...

Michael Giacchino is no stranger to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has composed the scores for "Doctor Strange," "Thor: Love and Thunder," and the entire Spider-Man "Home" trilogy, where he reworked the classic 1960s "Spider-Man" theme.
In his latest MCU project, though, he's directing as well as composing. Giacchino helmed the upcoming Disney+ special "Werewolf by Night," which adapts the Marvel horror comic character. Gael García Bernal stars as Jack Russell, the fittingly-named lycanthrope. According to a released plot synopsis, the special centers on monster hunters who gather at the Bloodstone Temple to mourn their late leader. They soon come face-to-face with a monster who may or may not be their doom.
"Werewolf by Night" came out of left-field. The comic and character aren't exactly household names at Marvel and this will be the studio's most overt foray into horror. Plus, Giacchino doesn't have much of a director's portfolio, with...

There's no such thing as risk for the MCU anymore. As long as the active flagship characters like Spider-Man, Thor, and Ant-Man keep packing 'em in theatrically, Kevin Feige and his Marvel Studios brain trust can afford to use Disney+ as a laboratory/playground to bring the company's cult characters to life and see if there's an audience for further adventures — hence "Moon Knight," "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law," and "Wonder Man."
Still, did anyone see "Werewolf by Night" coming? Created and developed in 1972 by the team of Roy Thomas, Jean Thomas, Gerry Conway, and Mike Ploog, the series allowed Marvel to pay homage to the bloody horror comics published by EC, the famously subversive label that spurred uptight cultural scolds to form the censorious Comics Code Authority. The lycanthrope main character, Jack Russell, found enough of a readership to earn a standalone series, but this was still a niche character,...

Marvel Studios has unveiled details and the first trailer for ‘Werewolf by Night’, the upcoming MCU Halloween special set to premiere October 7 on Disney+ this fall. Gael Garcia Bernal stars in the special as Jack Russell, known in Marvel Comics as the Werewolf by Night. Created by Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog in 1972, Jack is an ordinary man who carries an ancient family curse that turns him into a werewolf.
After managing to conquer his beastly nature, he becomes a wandering hero who uses his powers to fight demons and other forces of evil, frequently intersecting with other Marvel heroes in the process, reports Variety.
Laura Donnelly will star alongside Bernal in an undisclosed role. Michael Giacchino, who has worked as a composer on Marvel films such as ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’, directs the special. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito and Victoria Alonso executive produce.

Among the more exciting bits of news at the 2022 D23 Expo was a trailer for Werewolf by Night. A one-off Halloween special coming to Disney+ on October 7, Werewolf by Night not only brings a cult Marvel character to live-action, but it also serves as the directorial debut of Michael Giacchino, the Academy Award-winning composer who wrote the scores for Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Batman, and more.
Cursed with lycanthropy, Jack Russell made his debut in 1972’s Marvel Spotlight #2, written by Roy Thomas, Jean Thomas, and Gerry Conway, and penciled by Mike Ploog. To capitalize on the renewed interest in horror comics, Russell soon jumped to his own series Werewolf by Night, which took him around the Marvel Universe to battle against all manner of paranormal baddies. Although he’s since received to the background, Russell remains a fan favorite in the comics. And if the trailer for Werewolf by Night is any indication,...

One of my most anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe projects is perhaps the one I know the least about — Werewolf By Night. Starring Gael García Bernal and Laura Donnelly, Werewolf By Night will be Marvel’s first Halloween special and an incredibly fun teaser trailer was released at the D23 Expo.
If you’re a fan of black and white horror filled with pulpy goodness, then Werewolf By Night will be right up your alley. With influences from classic Universal Horror and Hammer Horror (it also brought back memories of The Beast Must Die), there’s a lot of great imagery in the teaser, including a split second glimpse at Man-Thing. But for me, Harriet Sansom Harris steals the damn show. I know the actress best thanks to her roles on The X-Files and Frasier, but she’s a force of nature in everything she appears in. I’m beyond thrilled...

How do you solve a problem like Frank Castle?
The Punisher has had a wild career since Gerry Conway, John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru created him way back in 1974. Originally a pretty clear cut villain, his popularity saw him frequently guest star so much he morphed into something of an anti-hero. You can blame Frank Miller for that one. His graduation to his own multiple books saw him become one of Marvel’s biggest characters in the early 1990s, together with Wolverine and Ghost Rider. Heck, he even got his own Netflix TV show just a few years ago. So, why has Frank not been flavour of the month lately?

Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino (“The Batman”) is making the leap to the director’s chair. Giacchino will make his feature directorial debut on Marvel Studios’ yet-untitled Halloween special.
Golden Globe-winning Mexican actor Gael García Bernal set to lead the cast of the werewolf-focused show that will air on Disney+.
Production on the Halloween special is set to begin later this month.
Giacchino previously directed the 2018 short film “Monster Challenge” and an episode of the animated series “Star Trek: Short Treks,” but the Marvel film will mark his feature debut.
While details about the project are being kept strictly under wraps, individuals with knowledge say the character may be based on “Werewolf by Night,” the name used by two separate Marvel characters.
The first, Jack Russell, was created by Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog, based on concepts by Stan Lee and Roy Thomas, and first appeared in a 1972 issue of “Marvel Spotlight.

One is your friendly neighborhood wall-crawler, a kid from Queens trying to juggle his life and his duty to help others. The other is the grand protector of our dimension, fighting mystical threats from throughout the multiverse. They may not sound like they complement each other on paper but, believe it or not, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange work really well together.
It’s actually fairly common to see the two of them working together–their paths cross pretty frequently on the streets of New York, and Spidey is the type to always (inadvertently or not) stick his nose in other heroes’ business. And with them showing up on the big screen together in Spider-Man: No Way Home, we figured it was worth looking back at some of their best comic book team ups.
Spider-Man: One More Day (2007)
Spidey and Strange’s most controversial pairing is also probably the biggest influence on No Way Home.

I want to open this week by reporting on the recent success of my Hero Initiative Auction on eBay. First off I want to thank the four buyers who made it possible to make a £20 donation and from a personal point of view they all left positive reviews to add to my growing seller status. As it averaged out I sold one item for every week the auction ran. While I did have plenty of interest in other listings the buyers pulling the trigger just weren’t there. I feel the auction is something I will revisit yearly. After this years mild success I would have more confidence to start listings lower, especially if they are going to pick up viewers. They may be more inclined to bid with lower starting prices. I think my obvious thought was to start slightly higher so as to make as big a donation as possible.

Robert Downey Jr. announced the death of his late father, Robert Downey Sr., director of the underground film “Putney Swope,” on Instagram Wednesday, calling him “a true maverick filmmaker.”
His son revealed “dad passed peacefully in his sleep after years of enduring the ravages of Parkinson’s” on Tuesday night. Downey Jr. noted that his father “remained remarkably optimistic throughout” his battle with Parkinson’s.
He went on to share a tribute to his step-mother, Rosemary Rodgers-Downey, who he called “a saint” and offered his thoughts and prayers.
“According to my stepmom’s calculations, they were happily married for just over 2000 years,” his son said.

Hollywood had found it incredibly difficult to successfully adapt the Punisher for the big screen, but Netflix struck gold when they cast Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle. Before the former Walking Dead star debuted in Daredevil and went on to headline two seasons of his own solo show, though, the comic book antihero had proven to be a very tough nut to crack.
Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jane and Ray Stevenson had all starred as the vigilante in movies, but none of the three were successful enough to launch a multi-film series, and for a while it looked as though the Punisher simply didn’t work in live-action. Bernthal may be on hiatus after Netflix’s entire roster of Marvel shows were canceled, but with the two-year hold set to expire imminently and Deadpool 3 signalling a shift into R-rated territory for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a return definitely can’t be ruled out.

Frank Castle has been a firm favorite among comic book fans ever since he made his first appearance in an issue of The Amazing Spider-Man back in 1974, with the troubled antihero standing out among the crowd of more cookie cutter good guys that largely defined Marvel’s output at the time.
The Punisher also happens to be an incredibly violent man with a cool and iconic logo, so his signature skull has been adopted by a number of individuals, groups and organizations over the decades, the majority of whom completely missed the point. After all, the vigilante isn’t supposed to be glorified. He’s a man broken by loss and despair, who makes it his mission to rid the streets of crime and injustice after his entire family is murdered.

The creators or originators of any visual iconography have no control over how others interpret, use or co-opt their designs, leading to several symbols being intrinsically tied to one thing despite initially having no connection to it whatsoever. The most prominent example is obviously the swastika, which was derived from an ancient Sanskrit word meaning ‘conducive to well-being’ and was first used as early as 3000 BC.
The point is, people can use any design for anything they want, and after the recent riots at the Capitol, it appears as though Marvel are facing some backlash in relation to the Punisher. Of course, they have absolutely no say in what Frank Castle’s signature skull logo appears on in terms of unofficial merchandise, but one image in particular has led to calls for the violent vigilante to be retired.

900 numbers for polling purposes, charging users for each call placed, was a 1980s fad that seemed perfect to employ in comic books for some sort of stunt. Editor Denny O’Neil and DC’s Marketing team, led by Bruce Bristow, conceived of the stunt and Jim Starlin wrote the four-part “Death in the Family” storyline to accommodate the stunt. Jason Todd, the second Robin, never was accepted by fans, either under his father, writer Gerry Conway or the post-Crisis writers Max Allan Collins and Jim Starlin. Callers got to say he would live or die.
It went on to become a media sensation, and a closer than expected vote. It also brought down the wrath of Warner Bros who was unaware of the event and the press attention because, back then, DC was a pimple on the conglomerate’s butt and no one considered telling them.

The Punisher‘s iconic skull logo has become increasingly visible over the last two decades. We saw it on military hardware in Iraq and Afghanistan and it’s become popular with law enforcement, too. The skull hit the headlines last week when we saw it on uniforms of riot police beating protesters, causing disquiet from Marvel Entertainment, Disney and the Punisher co-creator Gerry Conway, who said that the skull must not be “a symbol of oppression.”
As such, he launched a campaign “to reclaim the Punisher skull as a symbol of justice,” calling on young comic book artists of color to redesign it for Black Lives Matter with the intention of raising money to support the cause. The response was encouraging and now, just a few days later, we have a range of shirts available with the new designs.

Conway just launched Skulls 4 Justice on Custom Ink. He’s selling shirts, each with a different design for the Punisher’s signature skull insignia, reworked by an artist to boost Black Lives Matter. Money raised from these sales goes to Black Lives Matter.
“For too long, symbols associated with a character I co-created have been co-opted by forces of oppression and to intimidate black Americans,” said Conway on the fundraising page. “This character and symbol was never intended as a symbol of oppression. This is a symbol of a systematic failure of equal justice. It’s time to claim this symbol for the cause...

The Punisher is a former soldier turned gun-toting vigilante on a one-man mission to violently rid the streets of crime. As such, it’s no surprise whatsoever that the character has many fans in law enforcement and the military. This has long presented Marvel Entertainment with a dilemma, as military units, police departments, militias and various extreme right-wing groups have appropriated the iconic Punisher skull as their own.
That symbol has come to the forefront during the protests against the murder of George Floyd. Pictures of riot cops forcibly restraining peaceful protestors while sporting Punisher skull patches is not a good look for Marvel, especially as they’ve publicly supported Black Lives Matters and Disney has pledged $5 million in funds to support it (beginning with a $2 million donation to the NAACP).
Now, fans have launched a campaign for the studio to take action. Pointing to The Walt Disney Company’s...

As protests against police brutality go global and enter their third week, Marvel Comics has faced increasing calls to get the Punisher skull off of police gear. The skull is often added to bootleg tactical merchandise used by police and the military (both at home and abroad), as well as, occasionally, official police gear. When pressed on the matter, though, a Marvel spokesperson told io9 precisely nothing. The spokesperson affirmed to io9 that they were taking the issue very seriously, referred readers to a page from a recent issue of the Punisher’s comic, and pointed to the company’s prior statement on social media.
The Punisher was created by Gerry Conway, Ross Andru and John Romita, Sr. in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man. He is a former Marine sniper whose family is viciously murdered by the Mafia after witnessing a killing in Central Park, a man who is so...

While a fair amount of police officers have shown solidarity with the civil rights protests that swept the nation in response to the unlawful death of George Floyd, the majority has stayed put on the side of ‘the law,’ and some have even doubled down on the public image of a ruthless enforcer.
Faced with increasing pressure from the citizens they’re supposed to serve, more and more cops are joining the “Blue Lives Matter” counter-movement. As many of them have adopted the logo from Marvel antihero The Punisher to signify their allegiance, however, comic book writers are now urging Disney to pursue legal action against those who appropriated their logo without permission.
From a PR perspective – as well as a basic moral one – the decision of police officers to identify with The Punisher was poorly made. Also known as Frank Castle, The Punisher is a vigilante who operates outside of the law,...

Alfred Pennyworth has been a mainstay of the Batman franchise for decades now and though various elements of the property have changed through time, he’s managed to stay mostly the same.
After all, almost everyone can picture the faithful English butler, with the character being memorably brought to life in live-action via Michael Gough’s four movie stint in the 90s, Jeremy Irons’ take in the Dceu and, probably the best out of them all, Michael Caine’s version in The Dark Knight Trilogy. But at the moment, there’s an interesting discussion online with fans calling for a female Alfred in The Batman. A Freda Pennyworth, if you will.
The idea first came about when comic book writer and artist Bryan Hitch asked his followers who should star as Alfred alongside Robert Pattinson’s Batman? Punisher creator Gerry Conway replied, “Hear me out. Maggie Smith,” and with his Tweet gaining almost 20,000 likes,...
