Creation is the partly biographical, part fictional account of scientist Charles Darwin's relationship with his eldest daughter 'Annie', as the author struggled to document his evolutionary theories in the book On the Origin of Species. Produced by Jeremy Thomas, the film was directed by Jon Amiel, starring actors Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly as 'Charles' and 'Emma Darwin'. Screenplay is by John Collee, adapting author Randal Keynes's biography of Darwin titled Annie's Box. The film had its world premiere September 10, 2009 at the Toronto International Film Festival as the opening night Gala Presentation. Creation, the Charles Darwin biopic starring A Beautiful Mind stars Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly, has been in release limbo for a while due to the fact that no distributor — for whatever reason — wanted to touch it. Directed by The Core helmer Jon Amiel, Creation stars Bettany and Connelly as Darwin and wife Emma in a movie that met bland to negative reactions from the Toronto International Film Festival.

Now, according to Variety, Newmarket Films, the distributor of Passion of the Christ, has picked up the film and slotted it for a December release. Thus, sooner rather than later we’ll be able to see if the film, scripted by John Collee (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World) is any good.

Little known fact: Connelly and Bettany are real life husband and wife. That, and between Creation, Legion and Priest, every film Bettany is involved with at »

Columbus Takes Over Ripley Film

1 July 2009 9:10 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Robert Ripley, the cartoonist who showcased oddities from around the world on radio, television, and in the famous comic strip "Ripley’s Believe It or Not", is on his way to the big screen sometime in 2011.

Paramount will release Ripley’s Believe It or Not, which already has Jim Carrey attached to play Ripley. Originally scheduled to be a biopic, Sci Fi Wire reports John Collee, the screenwriter of Happy Feet and Zach Snyder’s upcoming Guardians of Ga'Hoole, is writing a more fantastical version of a script by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, the writers of Carrey’s 1999 film Man on the Moon.

Chris Columbus has been hired to direct the more outlandish Ripley’s Believe It or Not, replacing Tim Burton, who would have directed Alexander and Karaszewski’s more biographical script. Carrey was reportedly unhappy with Burton’s approach, and Burton is no longer attached to the project. »

Brett Ratner Producing Youngblood Adaptation

10 February 2009 11:25 AM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

The director who killed the X-Men franchise is working on another comic book adaptation.  Brett Ratner is producing a feature film out of the series/graphic novel Youngblood.  His production company, cleverly titled Rat Entertainment, recently made a deal with India-based Reliance Big Entertainment to co-finance upcoming projects, including this ill-advised movie.

In case you’re not familiar with Youngblood, it was all the rage in the early 90s, when comic book collecting hit a peak for kids of my generation.  I actually own quite a few of those comics somewhere, and I’m sure they’re worth absolutely nothing.  You see, I actually took them out of the packaging, which apparently is a big no no. At the time, the Image Comics publication was the highest selling independent comic book of all time.

The series is about a superhero team sanctioned by the U.S. government to protect and serve… »

Reliance Big Entertainment is developing a film based on Rob Liefeld’s iconic graphic novel Youngblood and hired Brett Ratner (X-Men: The Last Stand, Rush Hour) to direct it. The comic debuted in 1992 and centers on a high-profile superteam sanctioned and overseen by the United States Government. The members of Youngblood include Shaft, a former FBI agent and archer whose bow uses magnets to propel its arrow instead of a string; Badrock, a teenager transformed into a living block of stone; Vogue, a Russian fashion model with purple-and-chalk-white skin; and Chapel, a government assassin. Ratner briefly talked about the project with the trades - “Most of the great graphic novels are gone, and ‘Youngblood’ is one of the few comicbooks left with tentpole potential. “It was a real personal passion project for me, and a lot of people wanted (‘Youngblood’), but the amazing thing about the guys at Reliance is »
