Jose Zelada and Richard Claus’ “Ainbo: Spirit of the Amazon”, Cesar Cabral’s “Bob Spit: We Do Not Like People” (Brazil) and Hugo Covarrubias’ Oscar-nommed “Beast” (Chile) are some of the animated works in the running for the 5th Quirino Awards, the biggest prize event on Spain, Portugal and Latin America’s burgeoning animation scene.
In addition to a ceremony, the Quirino Awards includes an industry co-production and business forum for animation titles from the region.
The Quirino event will also host meetings including one of the Ibero-American Caaci state film-tv agencies, and another of Ibermedia, the region’s key international co-pro and distribution fund.
Brazilian feature “Bob Spit” and Chilean short “Beast” nabbed the highest number of nominations, each securing four. Mexican TV series “Frankelda’s Book of Spooks” and Peruvian movie “Ainbo” follow with three and two noms respectively.
“Beast” is the second Chilean short running for the Oscars.

While family audiences finally have a little more variety at cinemas by way of Paw Patrol: The Movie and Ainbo: Amazon Princess, neither new release were a match for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Free Guy at the box office last weekend.
Paramount’s Paw Patrol: The Movie opened at no. 3, ringing up $235,097 from 173 screens. Paid previews on the title have been running since August 21, so in total the animated feature is on $956,192.
The result has helped the film cross $US100 million ($137.8 million) worldwide, following openings in territories such as the UK August 9 and North America August 22, where it was simultaneously released on Paramount+.
Considering Rialto’s Ainbo: Amazon Princess is not based on established IP like Paw Patrol, its opening weekend of $105,464 from 143 locations is a decent result, seeing it premiere in sixth position.

"You are the hope... you just need to believe in yourself!" Signature Ent. has debuted the official UK trailer for an animated feature titled Ainbo: Spirit of the Amazon, a Peru + Netherlands co-production from filmmakers Richard Claus & Jose Zelada. In the spirit of Moana and Frozen, Ainbo is the epic journey of a young hero and her Spirit Guides, "Dillo" a cute and humorous armadillo and "Vaca" a goofy oversized tapir, who embark on a quest to save their home in the spectacular Amazon Rainforest. The plot follows an adventurous young girl, who along with her animal spirit guides, sets out to save her jungle paradise in the Amazon from loggers and miners. The film feature an authentic depiction of Amazon rainforest folklore. With the voices of Lola Raie, Rene Mujica, Naomi Serrano, Alejandra Gollas, Bernardo De Paula, and Joe Hernandez. This looks extra cheesy and formulaic, but I dig...

Buenos Aires — Marking what looks very much like a new record for animation in Latin America, Edward Noeltner’s Cinema Management Group, the sales company behind Oscar-nominated “Loving Vincent,” has pre-sold “Ainbo – Spirit of the Amazon” to over half the planet.
“Ainbo” was picked up by Cmg in January 2017 off the first edition of Ventana Sur Animation!, where Tunche Films presented a teaser promo. Produced by Gullane Films and Walter Salles’ Videofilmes, Sergio Machado’s “Noah’s Ark – A Musical Adventure,” a Cmg acquisition off last year’s Animation!, has now pre-sold to 16 international distributors. Sales on “Noah’s Ark,” a flagship for the high artistic and commercial ambitions of Brazilian animation, suggest once more the resilient appeal of striking, high-end foreign animation in the international market as a theatrical proposition.

This clunky digimated version of Angela Sommer-Bodenburg’s stories favours zappy distraction over nuance
German author Angela Sommer-Bodenburg’s tales of a pint-size bloodsucker have already generated one half-term timekiller, a Europuddingy live-action adaptation of 2000, chiefly of note for being directed by Christiane F’s Uli Edel. Eighteen years on, there follows this similarly cross-continental digimation, attempting to monetise whatever brand awareness the books have among a new generation, and – more specifically – steal a commercial march on Adam Sandler’s third Hotel Transylvania offering.
Its generically designed, jerkily swaying characters are only the most visible sign we’re in the hands of algorithms, not artisans. The one boon it might offer accompanying adults is a certain pace. It takes under 80 minutes for undead Rudolph (voiced by Rasmus Hardiker) and mortal Tony (Amy Saville) to forge the friendship that sees off ruthless vamp hunter Rookery (Jim Carter). Directors Richard Claus and...
