Ranging from fancy to casual, Queen Elizabeth II donned many dresses through the years. However, according to an expert, one proved to be more “important” than the rest. No, it wasn’t the wedding dress she wore to marry Prince Philip in 1947 that had a six-figure price tag in today’s dollars. Instead, it was the dress Queen Elizabeth wore to her 1953 coronation.

June 12, 1953, marked a major moment in royal fashion history. That day, Queen Elizabeth was officially crowned at Westminster Abbey. She turned to designer Sir Norman Hartnell for the occasion after wearing one of his designs on her wedding day six years earlier.
Queen Elizabeth paid for her wedding dress, per the royal family’s website, with clothing ration coupons. It cost a reported $42,000 at the time, the equivalent of about $1.6 million today.

Rochelle Neil is recounting her audition for “The Nevers,” HBO’s new hourlong fantasy series set in a steampunk Victorian London in the aftermath of a mysterious citywide communal vision that leaves some of the populace with superpowers.
“She’s got a priest tied up, and she’s torturing him and throwing fire,” Neil said. “She’s sort of going on this spiel about her childhood, and what happened to her by this priest in this ministry. And she ends up burning an effigy of the baby Jesus. I have no idea what side of my personality I seemed to have showed for [the producers] to go: ‘She’s really good at torturing!’”
As “Bonfire” Annie Carbey, Neil plays one of “The Touched” — those who, after the mass (maybe?) hallucination (maybe?), attain abilities not generally in the human playbook. Conveniently, if one needs a person, place, or thing torched quickly and efficiently,...

20th Century may have pushed the opening of the “The King’s Man” to February, but that’s not stopping Mr Porter from releasing its latest Kingsman collection.
Some pieces of the men’s luxury brand hit the fashion site today with the remainder going on sale when the film hits theaters in February.
Mr Porter launched the Kingsman brand in conjunction with the first movie, 2015’s “Kingsman: The Secret Service.” Since then, Mr Porter has created another 12 separate Kingsman collections in collaboration with several legacy men’s brands.
“Historically, movie or no movie, we always release a Kingsman collection in September,” Mr Porter buying director Sam Kershaw tells Variety. “So that’s very business as usual for us.

Last night, the Costume Designers Guild had their say in the Oscar race. The 22nd annual Cdg Awards were held and with only two of the five Academy Award nominees in the running here, all eyes were on this group to see if that might tell us anything. Well, that might just have happened, but not necessarily in the way that we were expecting. Did the race zig instead of zag? Read on for more to find out… The complete Costume Designers Guild Awards results are next, but the notable outcome (or at least the most notable outcome) was that in Excellence in Period Film, Jojo Rabbit and costumer designer Mayes C. Rubeo pulled an upset over presumed frontrunner Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood and costume designer Arianne Phillips. Could the Academy follow suit in February? Quite possibly. Knives Out and costume designer Jenny Eagan took home the Excellence in Contemporary Film prize,...

Knives Out, Jojo Rabbit and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil strode away with the film prizes at the 22nd annual Costume Designers Guild Awards, which were handed out tonight at the Beverly Hilton.

For any Daenerys Targaryen stans still reeling over that controversial Game of Thrones series finale, it looks like the Mother of Dragons' fate was foreshadowed long before Jon Snow showed up with a knife. In an interview with TV Guide, Emmy-winning costume designer Michele Clapton revealed that Daenerys's white fur coat in the season eight premiere was a huge hint at her transformation into the Mad Queen. More than a few Reddit users caught onto the significance of Daenerys's wardrobe while the series was still on air, and we should have known our Khaleesi was going to lose control all along.

The Costume Designers Guild announced their nominations for the 22nd Cdga Awards on Tuesday. Among the nominees are Arianne Phillips for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Mayes C. Rubeo for “Jojo Rabbit” and Mitchell Travers for “Hustlers.” “The Irishman” is notably absent from the field.
The Costume Designers Guild celebrates excellence in film, television and short-form costume design. As previously announced, this year’s host will be Emmy-nominated writer, producer, author, director and actor Mindy Kaling, while the honorees will include Mary Ellen Fields (distinguished service award), Michael Kaplan (career achievement award), Adam McKay (distinguished collaborator award) and Charlize Theron (spotlight award).
“On behalf of the Costume Designers Guild, I’d like to congratulate all of our 22nd Cdga nominees. This year is a particularly exciting year for television as we have updated our rules of submission. Designers now submit a single episode that best represents their work on a series.

Nominees for the 22nd annual Costume Designer Guild Awards included frontrunning period pieces “Dolemite Is My Name,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and “Rocketman.” They were joined by “Downton Abbey” and “Jojo Rabbit.” This definitely bodes well for Ruth Carter (“Dolemite”) in her bid for a second consecutive Oscar following “Black Panther.”
However, surprise no shows were “Joker,” “The Irishman,” “Little Women,” and “Judy.” And, Deborah Cook, who became the first costume designer from animation to get nominated by the Cdga for her breakthrough work on “Kubo and the Two Strings,” was denied this time around for her great Victorian-era work on Laika’s stop-motion Oscar contender, “Missing Link.”
Contemporary nominees, meanwhile, included “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” “Hustlers,” “Knives Out,” “The Laundromat,” and “Queen & Slim.” But “Bombshell” didn’t make the cut.

Last week the winds of winter came to a chilly BFI Southbank as the cast and crew of HBO’s decade-defining TV show Game of Thrones gathered for a series retrospective.
To celebrate the DVD and Blu-ray release of Game of Thrones, Isaac Hempstead-Wright (Bran Stark), Gemma Whelan (Yara Greyjoy) and Kristofer Hivju (Tormund Giantsbane) were on hand to showcase some never seen before bonus material on the big screen for the first time, which was followed by a panel discussion with host Edith Bowman. The cast was joined on stage by members of the off-screen team that helped create the show: Sarah and Barrie Gower (Prosthetics Department), Tommy Dunne (Weapons Master) and Michele Clapton (Costume Design).

At the 2019 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, “Game of Thrones'” craft dominance was a testament to both its cultural impact and cumulative excellence. The HBO juggernaut grabbed 10 awards (out of 18 nominations) for its final season. The series won for casting, fantasy/sci-fi costumes, editing, main title design, music composition, makeup (non-prosthetic), sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, and stunt coordination — but significantly, the editing victory for “The Long Night” is the key predictor for next Monday’s outstanding drama Emmy win, since five of the last seven winners have gone on to take the big prize.
The series’ final season was capped by the extraordinary work of costume designer Michele Clapton and the VFX team led by supervisor Joe Bauer. Clapton earned her fifth Emmy, concluding with Sansa’s (Sophie Turner) wolfish coronation gown with metal bodice, wielding both power and respect. And the VFX dwarfed all previous annihilation...

Fans of Game of Thrones may still be engaged in heated debate over whether Daenerys Targaryen's (Emilia Clarke) turn to the dark side was sufficiently foreshadowed, but there is one person to whom the Mother of Dragons' return to her Targaryen roots is clear as day. "It's somewhere I wouldn't have predicted her going but it was amazing to see how easily it seemed to develop out of the direction that her costumes had been heading," says costume designer Michele Clapton.

Given its record-shattering 32 Emmy nominations on Tuesday, “Game of Thrones” naturally dominated the craft categories as well for its Season 8 finish, grabbing 17 craft nods. However, HBO’s highly acclaimed limited series “Chernobyl” came in second with 14 craft nods. Also faring well were Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and FX’s “Fosse/Verdon” with 10 nominations; Netflix’s “Russian Doll” with nine; HBO’s “True Detective” and “Barry” with eight; HBO’s “Deadwood” reunion movie, Netflix’s “Our Planet,” and, surprisingly, last season’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” from Hulu with seven; “RuPaul’s Drag Race” with six; and Showtime’s “Escape at Dannemora,” Netflix’s “When They See Us,” HBO’s “Sharp Objects,” FX’s “Pose,” Netflix’s “Glow,” and Nat Geo’s “Free Solo” with five.

Game of Thrones' record 32 Emmy nominations, which were announced Tuesday morning, dominated the creative artists categories and could extend the wins of its artists, many of whom have worked on the series for many seasons.
HBO's fantasy series has six previous wins for special visual effects and it again scored a mention in the category on Tuesday. VFX supervisor Joe Bauer has already won five Emmys for the series, while VFX producer Steve Kullback and VFX associate producer Adam Chazen — who have been with the series since season one — have six each.

Emilia Clarke and Regina Hall sat down for a chat for Variety’s Actors on Actors. For more, click here.
Emilia Clarke and Regina Hall spent the TV season playing characters who break through the boys’ club. Clarke, on HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” was Daenerys, the dragon queen whose will to power has brought her on an eight-season journey to the heart of the action in Westeros. Hall, a TV veteran, infiltrates a different center of power on Showtime’s comedy “Black Monday,” as the lone woman in a 1980s Wall Street firm.
Regina Hall: It’s so good to meet you. Because I’m a rare person who, prior to this, had not seen “Game of Thrones.”
Emilia Clarke: Not a rare person at all.
Rh: Well, I’m rare amongst my friends.
EC: Ok. Not rare amongst mine.

“Game of Thrones” star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau considered Michele Clapton’s costumes to be instrumental in portraying Jaime Lannister. “When Jaime was a prisoner and wearing only rags, the costume tells a story of being broken,” says the Denmark native and prior Emmy nominee. Likewise, “You put on the Lannister armor and it simply exudes power and strength.” The outfits that inspire confidence in his own life come by way of stylist Ilaria Urbinati. “I’ll put on a beautiful suit and will think it looks fine. And then she’ll go in and do the tailoring and I can see it actually looks so much better.”
2015
After scoring four consecutive drama series nods, “Game of Thrones” finally won the Emmy for Season 5. “It was overwhelming because we didn’t expect it,” says Coster-Waldau. “Although they’d won technical awards, the idea that it could win a main award was far-fetched.

One of the worst fears “Game of Thrones” fans had going into the final season’s third episode, “The Long Night,” was that the Army of the Dead attacking Winterfell would include the resurrected zombie versions of such beloved characters as Kristian Nairn’s Hodor. While the writers fortunately did not go down that painful route, they did once discuss the potential for beloved dead characters to return as white walkers. Vanity Fair has published exclusive storyboards from the show’s main storyboard artist, William Simpson, that reveal there was a plan at some point in early development to revive dead characters and have them join the Army of the Dead.
Per Simpson’s art, the seventh season premiere “Dragonstone” was originally set to feature the zombie version of the dead wildling Karsi (Birgitte Hjort Sørensen). The character became a fan favorite after her appearance in the battle episode “Hardhome,...

The Oscar frontrunner for Best Costume Design, “The Favourite,” won a top honor at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Tuesday. It picked up the period prize over two of its Oscar rivals — “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Mary Queen of Scots” — as well as “BlacKkKlansman” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
Another Oscar contender in that category, “Black Panther,” won the fantasy film race over “Aquaman,” “The Avengers: Infinity War,” “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” and “A Wrinkle in Time.”
And the contemporary costumes of “Crazy Rich Asians” prevailed over “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” “Ocean’s 8,” “A Star Is Born” and “Widows.”
The fifth Oscar nominee, “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” was snubbed by the guild which has a stellar track record at honoring the eventual Oscar winner. The winner of the period film Cdg prize tends to repeat at the Oscars. However, that has not been the case for the last two years running.

Four of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the Oscars — “Black Panther,” “The Favourite,” “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Mary Queen of Scots” — reaped bids for the Costume Designers Guild kudos. While our fifth contender – “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald — was snubbed, fans of that film should take heart from the fact that these awards often overlook one of the Academy Awards nominees. However, the Cdg has a stellar track record at honoring the eventual Oscar winner.

'Game of Thrones' Costume Designer Says Wage Inequality for Below-the-Line Workers Worse in the U.K.
It’s common knowledge in Hollywood that, for all the talk of fixing pay discrepancies and gender discrimination, some of the most underpaid and underserved crewmembers are those in the costume department. Unfortunately, this seems to be an international issue.
“I don’t know what it is in the States, but I think in the U.K. we’re less well-paid,” Game of Thrones costume designer Michele Clapton told The Hollywood Reporter on Friday before she spoke on a panel about her work at downtown’s Fashion Institute of Design and Marketing. The Emmy-nominated crafts team said goodbye to post-war austerity and introduced more color to Season 2 of “The Crown,” which ushered in the Swinging ’60s. That meant isolating Queen Elizabeth (Claire Foy) in Buckingham Palace as she struggles to become relevant, and liberating her younger sister, Princess Margaret (Vanessa Kirby), who hooks up with bohemian photographer Tony Armstrong-Jones (Matthew Goode).
“Slowly the two sisters are diverging and we were able to contrast Elizabeth in the palace and Margaret moving out and meeting Tony for the first time,” said production designer Martin Childs (nominated for “Beryl”). “Suddenly, we’re able to introduce color quite a bit. It was liberating. I was able to run more variation of color of stone, and actually introduce some red and modern, boxed shaped cars.
“People started wearing color and that gave us license to do the interiors in color. But at the same time, because Margaret...

In the penultimate “Game of Thrones” seventh season, Daenerys’ absolute quest for power informed both the production and costume design of perennial Emmy winners Deborah Riley and Michele Clapton. Highlights included the imposing Dragonstone Throne Room set and striking winter coat, which were symbolic of Dany’s confidence and strength.

When it comes to Emmy nominations for below-the-line talent, traditional broadcaster NBC more than held its own in the major Creative Arts categories, tying HBO and besting juggernaut Netflix. The Peacock network broadcast three of the 13 shows that amassed seven or more noms in such areas as cinematography, production design and editing. HBO also had three shows in that arena; FX and Netflix each scored two, while Amazon, Hulu and Showtime each had one. Here’s an appraisal of those strongly crafted programs by some of the artisans who helped create them.

‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’: The Sequel’s Best Musical Sequence Wasn’t Even in the Original Script
[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.”]
It’s only fitting that long-awaited sequel “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” ends with a massive final song-and-dance sequence that brings together the entire cast, regardless of the timeline they inhabit in the film. Ol Parker’s film serves as both a sequel and a prequel to the 2008 film, with one timeline following Lily James as a young Donna (played in the first film by Meryl Streep) as she makes her way to the Greek island that will become her home, while another focuses on Donna’s now-grown daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) as she attempts to make her mother’s dream of owning a hotel on the island come true.
The two timelines combine into one charmingly over-the-top final musical sequence, a splashy finale that blends together younger versions of characters with their older selves, including the entire cast of the first film. It’s...

The Oscar frontrunner for Best Costume Design, “Phantom Thread,” stumbled at the guild awards on Feb. 20, losing the Best Period Film category to one of its Oscar rivals, “The Shape of Water.” Another Oscar nominee, “Beauty and the Beast,” lost the Fantasy Film race to “Wonder Woman.” The other two Academy Awards contenders — “Darkest Hour” and “Victoria and Abdul” — were snubbed by the Costume Designers Guild at its 20th annual awards, which took place at the Beverly Hilton .
But don’t rule out “Phantom Thread” for the Oscar just yet. Remember, only nine of the most recent 19 Oscar champs for Best Costume Design came into the evening with a Cdg award on their mantle. Indeed, just last year the academy went with the fantasy film “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” which had lost at the guild to “Doctor Strange.”

In the battle of period costume design, “The Shape of Water’s” Luis Sequeira upset “Phantom Thread’s” Mark Bridges at the 20th annual Costume Designer Guild Awards at the Beverly Hilton.
In a further victory for the Best Picture Oscar frontrunner, DGA winner Guillermo del Toro was honored with the Distinguished Collaborator Award. While Bridges remains the Oscar favorite for Paul Thomas Anderson’s love poem to London fashion statements of the 1950s, the race has just tightened for Sequeira’s Cold War meets movie fashion statements of the 1960s.
The sci-fi/fantasy award surprisingly went to “Wonder Woman’s” Lindy Hemming over Oscar-nominated Jacqueline Durran for “Beauty and the Beast.” The contemporary award, meanwhile, went to “I, Tonya’s” Jennifer Johnson, beating the much flashier “Kingsman: The Golden Circle,” designed by Arianne Phillips.
For TV, Jane Petrie won for “The Crown” (period), Michele Clapton took home the prize...

The Costume Designers Guild nominees for the 20th annual Cdg Awards in film, TV, and shortform costume design have landed. Three costume categories separate contemporary, period, and fantasy/sci-fi, so there’s room for more contemporary titles such as “I, Tonya” and “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” which are less likely to make it to the big Oscar show. Period films like “Phantom Thread” and “The Shape of Water” and big-scale fantasies like “Thor: Ragnarok” tend to make the Oscar grade. Given the number of slots, among the notable snubs are period films “Darkest Hour” (which boasts more showy costumes than nominated “Dunkirk”), “The Post,” “The Beguiled,” “Victoria & Abdul,” and “Mudbound.”
On the television side, a number of popular picks emerged with nods, including “Game of Thrones,” “Black Mirror,” “The Crown,” and “Stranger Things.” Like the film nods, each category is divided by contemporary, period, and fantasy/sci-fi designations.
