Technologists Todd Terrazas, Max Einhorn, Mike Gioia and Ian Eck have posed a challenge to nine up-and-coming filmmakers: create short films using generative AI in only 48 hours. The Cinema Synthetica filmmaking competition is the first of its kind, founded in hopes of demonstrating the potential of AI tools to influence the future of filmmaking.
The completion is part of the AI on the Lot conference, a one-day summit to be held next week in downtown Los Angeles where Hollywood creatives can collaborate with those at the forefront of artificial intelligence. The nine Cinema Synthetica participants were carefully selected for the challenge and then divided into teams of three. After two full days of work, the films will be presented at AI on the Lot on May 16 to a panel of judges that will include such industry insiders as Einhorn, Jeff Clanagan, Kathleen McCaffrey, Momo Wang, Rachel Joy Victor and Jackee Chang.

Tom Brady took the jokes in stride at his roast — well, most of them.
Amid jabs about Gisele Bündchen, deflategate and his good looks Sunday night, Brady bristled at one in particular, aimed at the Patriots’ 82-year-old owner, Robert Kraft.
During his turn onstage, Jeff Ross quipped: “So Tom became a Patriot and moved up to New England, and on the first day of training camp, that scrawny rookie famously walked into the owner Robert Kraft‘s office and said, ‘I’m the best decision your organization has ever made. Would you like a massage?’”
Brady then approached Ross, who’d blown a kiss Kraft’s way, and said in his ear: “Don’t say that shit again.” Ross replied, “Ok, Ok. He’s having fun, look at him. I love what you do for the Jews, Robert Kraft. You’re incredible.”

NATPE, under new management after encountering turbulence during the pandemic, has appointed a new advisory board and is firming up plans for the return of its signature U.S. conference next January in Miami.
The conference organizer was rescued out of bankruptcy at the start of 2023 by Brunico, the Canadian company behind events like the Realscreen Summit and Banff World Media Festival. The flagship NATPE conference, rooted in Miami over the past decade-plus, had managed to weather massive industry disruptions over nearly six decades but couldn’t survive Covid. The 11th-hour decision to cancel the 2022 edition due to the Omicron wave left NATPE on the hook for hefty fees to hotel operators and vendors, prompting management to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last October.
The retooled January conference, now called NATPE Global, is returning to Miami but not to the event’s longtime South Beach base at the Fontainebleau. Instead,...

Kevin Hart and Snoop Dogg are teaming up with Peacock to tackle a new endeavor: recapping the Olympics.
Pairing Hart and Snoop as the comedy guides through the Tokyo Olympics 2021, the commentary series “Olympic Highlights With Kevin Hart and Snoop Dogg” will be exclusively available on NBC’s streaming service. The pair will set out to summarize the Olympics’ most impressive displays of athleticism, as well as the moments that don’t go as planned.
NBCUniversal has remained confident with its plans to broadcast up to 7,000 hours of Tokyo Olympics events. “Olympic Highlights” only reinforces the notion that Peacock will be a critical asset of their strategy.
In addition to Hart and Snoop, late-night host Amber Ruffin will offer her commentary for the streaming service from the ground in Tokyo. Cari Champion and Kenny Mayne, two veteran broadcasters who recently left ESPN, will co-anchor “Tokyo Tonight,” a quick-turnaround highlights and interviews program.

Kevin Hart action-comedy series “Die Hart” has officially been renewed for a second season — again.
Roku announced that it has ordered Season 2 of “Die Hart,” which naturally will be titled “Die Harter,” as an exclusive for the free, ad-supported Roku Channel. “It’s been great to see the incredible response to ‘Die Hart’ on the Roku Channel,” Hart said in a statement. “We’re excited to be partnering with Roku to bring another season to its audience.”
The show is the first former Quibi original that Roku is renewing. Actually, “Die Hart” had already been picked up for a second season by Quibi last September, but that came about a month before the richly funded Jeffrey Katzenberg-led mobile subscription-video startup announced that it was shutting down. In January 2021, Roku paid substantially less than $100 million to snap up the assets of Quibi, a deal that included more than 75 shows.

Roku on Tuesday said it’s renewed Kevin Hart’s action-comedy series “Die Hart” — one of several shows the company acquired from Quibi, Jeffrey Katzenberg’s now-defunct mobile streaming service — for a second season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“It’s been great to see the incredible response to ‘Die Hart’ on The Roku Channel,” Hart said in a statement. “We’re excited to be partnering with Roku to bring another season to its audience.”
The series is the first Roku Original to be renewed, and comes after the show pulled in a “record number of households streaming the series” the weekend following its May 20 debut. (Company executives declined to share specific streaming figures.) The new season, continuing its homage to the “Die Hard” franchise, will be dubbed “Die Harter.”
“This was not a difficult decision to make,” Colin Davis, Roku’s head of original scripted programming, told TheWrap.

Kevin Hart is returning to Quibi for a sequel to “Die Hart,” the streaming service announced on Thursday. The sequel will be dubbed “Die Harter,” naturally, with the title once again paying homage to the Bruce Willis-led “Die Hard” movies.

It’s been a cruel spring for sports fans as the coronavirus pandemic sidelined teams, players and leagues around the world. Kevin Hart feels that pain too, and today he premieres a new five-episode homebound season of his iced-down web series Cold as Balls.
The first episode of Cold as Balls: Cold Calls, featuring NFL star Richard Sherman, debuts today on Hart’s digital network Laugh Out Loud. Watch the trailer for above.
Hart usually interviews his Cold as Balls guests from the icy realm of the cold tub. Cold Calls takes the talk to the couch via video call — with each guest calling into the show without the host knowing who’s on the other line.
The new season of the sports talk series, which won the 2018 Streamy Award for Sports, also will feature NFL stars Russell Wilson and Derrick Henry, retired NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb and NBA All-Star Paul George.

Actor and rapper Tip “T.I.” Harris and Jeff Clanagan, Kevin Hart’s business partner, represented the entertainment perspective in a virtual panel Thursday examining issues across society and culture raised by the George Floyd protests.
“There is no perfect revolution,” Harris said. But even if ultimate outcomes don’t match “what we have in our heads,” the key is to continue “attacking the financial base of what we consider this power of oppression.”
Clanagan, president of Hart’s Laugh Out Loud and CEO of Codeblack Films, said the recent Gone With the Wind episode shows how much progress is yet to be made. HBO Max this week temporarily pulled the 1939 film off its streaming service after objections were raised about its depictions of slavery, among other issues. “But the next day, Gone with the Wind becomes the No. 1 movie on Amazon,” Clanagan said. “So what does that say to America and the world?...

In spring 2019, “Fast Color” had rave reviews, Oscar-nominated “La La Land” producer Jordan Horowitz — and it seemed to be doomed. It took a while for the film to find distribution; Lionsgate’s Codeblack Films acquired the film six months after its 2018 SXSW premiere, and that came after writer-director Julia Hart and writer-producer Jordan Horowitz were rejected “by any number of marketing executives or heads of studios,” Horowitz said. “I was told in very direct language that they didn’t know who the movie was for.” In April, when the film about three generations of black women with supernatural talents reached theaters, it made just $77,000 at the box office.
And then, a few months later, Amazon announced that it would develop a “Fast Color” series, with Viola Davis producing. It’s a fairy-tale ending for the film, but the real story is considerably more complex.
The truth is, Amazon wanted “Fast Color” from the start.
