‘Is it autobiographical?’ is usually a question that female novelists can’t escape, but when David Nicholls published One Day in 2009, it also plagued him. Perhaps writing in the romantic genre encouraged interviewers to grant Nicholls honorary-woman status? Lucky him.
One Day is the story of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, whose lives we dip into on the same date each year for a couple of decades. They first meet as students at their Edinburgh University graduation ball in 1988, after which their lives weave in and out of each other’s all the way into their mid-30s. The book was a word-of-mouth hit that was made into a very middling film in 2011, and has since been adapted into a terrific 14-part Netflix series starring This is Going to Hurt’s Ambika Mod and The White Lotus’ Leo Woodall.
Because Emma and Dexter become mildly public figures in the story...

The Word was a magazine-style entertainment show that ran from 1990 to 1995 on the UK’s Channel 4. It was helmed by Mancunian motormouth Terry Christian and a medley of once and future stars, including Amanda de Cadenet, Dani Behr, Katie Puckrik, and Mark Lamarr. The show was the brainchild of Charlie Parsons and Terry Christian, who were tasked with filling the hip, cultural hole left behind by the departure of music-oriented, youth-skewed shows like The Tube.
The Word began life in August 1990 as a tame, tea-time shadow of the fearlessly innovative show it would later become. What saved it from becoming a real-life version of Nozin’ Aroun’ – the spoof youth show so insufferably condescending it prompted Rik to destroy his TV set in the anarchic 1980’s BBC sitcom The Young Ones – was the decision by Channel 4’s Chief Executive Michael Grade to shift transmission from 6pm to late-night. Unmoored from pre-watershed restrictions,...

Right from its opening scene – where a suspect is chased under a bus and his head squashed like a jam doughnut – No Offence marked itself out as a gripping cop show like no other. The brainchild of Shameless’ Paul Abbott, it smashes together lightning-paced police drama with dark comedy and lashings of soap opera. At the centre is impulsive detective constable Dinah Kowalska, played by Elaine Cassidy, who we caught up with on the phone ahead of the second series beginning tonight (January 4th) on Channel 4. Key to No Offence’s success, she told us, was the Paul Abbott factor.
“It is like when you really like a band and you are waiting for their next album,” she said. “No Offence felt like his next album after Shameless, even though he has written films and stuff since. Paul’s writing is unique. It is just about three degrees left of reality.

Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee in the hot tub with Gary Busey; Helen Flanagan weeping relentlessly in the Diary Room; and David McIntosh parading around in Those short shorts.... the possibilities for this series of Celebrity Big Brother are endless.
So, as we eagerly await for the mystery(ish) celebrity guests to enter the famous house in Elstree, we've decided to reminisce with our favourite ever star contestants below:
1. Jackie Stallone
"Yeah, Jackie," were the only two words uttered from the side of Jackie's heavily siliconed mouth as she entered the house, draped in fur and dripping in jewels. Her entrance soon became one of the most memorable moments from the entire series.
It was part-Jackie's presence, part-Jackie's face that really shocked Brigitte Nielsen back on the show in 2005 when her former mother-in-law entered the house on day five.
Fellow housemates had to refer to Jackie as the Queen Mother,...

Not since Arg waddled around without any trousers on on Towie: Live has there been a more ugly and pointless hour of television than Channel 5's The Big Benefits Row.
Spongers and scroungers - two words we heard a lot during last night's hour of squawking and drivel - could easily have been applied to the Channel 5 execs who commissioned this nonsense.
Feeding off the laugh-and-point-and-feel-better-about-yourself success of Channel 4's Benefits Street, Channel 5 decided to beat its broadcasting rival to the punch and host a live debate on the subject. A subject which host Matthew Wright claimed had brought the nation to "boiling point".
What followed was click-bait TV. An hour of Daily Express front page headlines spliced together with Edwina Currie and Katie Hopkins hurling out bile and snarling like Gremlins to screams of fury from members of the audience.
There was zero debate, plenty of screeching and snide remarks,...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Midnight Releasing. Director: Tony Jopia. Writer: Stephen Bishop. Cast: Laurence Saunders, Carl Coleman, Elisabeth Shahlavi, Alex Marieka Hanly, Leslie Grantham, Terry Christian, and Joe Egan. The United Kingdom shot Deadtime is about a band trying to find a comeback. In a dilapitated studio in Birmingham, they find a serial killer instead. The cliches abound is this small film. From an isolated locale to no cell phone service, you have seen this style of filmmaking and writing before. Fortunately, some late prose and instances of overacting create for a few light moments. The story follows Love Meets Murder, a band struggling with a lack of popularity. Their last outing did not bring in the revenue. Now, they are relegated to a back water studio where they hope to record some new singles. Once at the locale, they sing and gyrate...

Getting noticed for recent cuts made to a death scene Deadtime is a British horror hoping to catch people’s attention. With cameos from Leslie Grantham and Terry Christian it definitely gets noticed by British fans who probably wonder why the hell they are in the film. Surprisingly though they are well used, not just for their names but for the scenes they are in.
When a band is in need of a bit of a revival they are locked into an old warehouse studio to record their new video with hopes of getting some interest back. Things don’t go to plan though as a masked killer starts to kill them one by one, with no idea how to escape and the killer hiding within...

John Foster (Christopher Dane) is fed up. He’s lost his job, bills are piling up, his partner keeps nagging him. Along with his friend and fellow couch potato Chris (Lee Boardman) he decides to put some silly things on “an online auction site” (*cough* eBay) including soiled underwear and himself. A regional news crew catches up with him one morning as the auction is drawing to a close and then follow him in real time as the clock counts down to the end of his selling of himself. He and Chris are bewildered by all of the attention, then seduced by the promise from ambitious reporter Maia (Jessica Blake) of fame and fortune, before things really start to get out of hand with locals and international news hotshots gathering outside his house, all keen to see what will happen. How much is a human life worth? – we are repeatedly asked to consider.

It's been a busy day for indie movies on Empire, what with the new poster for Another Year and another for The Kids Are Alright. And now here's a poster and trailer for a third movie, this time a small-scale British indie called Being Sold. It's the story of a bloke who, following redundancy, puts himself up for sale on an online auction site – ignoring several international and national laws outlawing slavery in the process, we might add. The cast includes Christopher Dane (Born of Hope), Lee Boardman (Rome), Eva Pope (Waterloo Road), Jessica Blake (The Butterfly Tattoo) as well as Chris Hannon (Lunch Monkeys), Lesley Joseph (Birds of a Feather), John Thompson, Terry Christian and Roy Walker.A percentage of the film's box office is apparently going to Amnesty International, and a release date is due to be announced in the next couple of days. After they were allocated a food budget of £200 in their high flying task today, the Big Brother housemates compiled their first ever shopping list this evening.
Tensions rose in the house as housemates argued about what to include. “We need cheese and margarine,” Rachael insisted but Shabby preferred butter. Sunshine, who is vegan, then chimed in to say that she would pursue the completed list and add her own special dietary items.
The furore was enough to make Shabby give up on the list, she gave it over to Nathan, Sunshine, Steve and Dave.
Back in the living room with the remaining housemates, Shabby exclaimed:
“I think some people have a very definite idea of what needs to be done and I, quite frankly, am keeping out of it.”
The finished shopping list was as follows:
14 Baked Potatoes
3 Cabbages
2 Carrots
10 White Potatoes
4 Pasta Sauce

With a poster this cool, who needs brains or originality? Alright, in all fairness, British slasher Deadtime looks like it at least has it's tongue-in-cheek and that counts for something, but I'm posting this more for the fun of it all than as an endorsement of how good I think it could be.

The story revolves around a troubled rock band whose unscrupulous record label producer, played by Channel 4’s “The Word” presenter Terry Christian, sends them to a run down studio in the Midlands to create their ‘magnum opus’ and revive their flagging career. As the guitars rock and the cameras roll, the entire entourage is stalked by a psychotic assailant, who seems hell bent on killing them all in ways that are increasingly graphic and creative.

Produced by Novelist Dominic Took, the new "bloody brutal British" slasher flick Deadtime, centers around a rock band whose careers have fallen apart. Turning to their record label producer for help, they are sent to a dingy old studio in Wednesbury to utilize their “deadtime” and create their new “magnum opus”. Only moments after finishing their first track, one of the group turns up dead, and the heads begin to roll. The film stars Leslie Grantham (Eastenders, Doctor Who), Terry Christian, Big Joe Egan and metal band Judas Priest’s Ian Hill.

Big Joe Egan, the former Irish Heavyweight Champion hailed by Mike Tyson as "the toughest white man on the planet," has joined the cast of Deadtime , a title we first reported on here . He'll join Terry Christian for this story of the Birmingham-based goth/metal band Love Meets Murder who, during their "deadtime," hole up in an old run down studio for a weekend to record a new song and video. Locked in, they will not emerge until they've successfully come up with something great. Tensions arise and once one of their entourage is found murdered, dark secrets begin to unfold and a series of grisly murder, each more depraved than the last, turns the whole enterprise into a grim battle for survival. Director Tony Jopia begins shooting the film in two days.
