Back in 2016, Femi Oyeniran and Nicky Slimting Walker’s The Intent become a surprising hit, none more surprising than the film’s own filmmakers. The underground hit burst onto the scene selling out all cinemas on its independent release, climbing to number 3 on the iTunes movie chart before eventually being sold to Netflix.
Fast forward 2 years and Femi and Nicky are back with the film’s follow-up. The prequel, The Intent 2: The Come Up reintroduces old characters and brings along a few new faces to go back to 1997 to follow the gang as their pasts and journey’s give us an insight into what made them into the callous gangsters we all came to know. The story centres on Jay (Ghetts) who has big dreams; but his ambitions are crippled by his allegiance to both his crew and Hackney crime boss Beverley (Sharon Duncan-Brewster). Cherry Tree Lane Directed by Paul Andrew Williams Starring: Rachael Blake, Tom Butcher, Jumayn Hunter, Ashley Chin, Sonny Muslim Runtime: 77 Minutes Films like Cherry Tree Lane are diamonds in the rough. For every horror film that’s released a year, few are actually noteworthy, while most settle for being so-bad-it’s-good (or bad) schlock. Yet when one comes along that shows true talent and ambition, it deserves to be praised. While not a perfect film, Cherry Tree Lane showcases Paul Andrew Williams strong directorial abilities. Williams has turned in a tense, gripping thriller that’s a far cut above the rest. Williams is the reason Cherry Tree Lane works, although he does [ Read More ]

Stars: Ashley Chin, Ashley Madekwe, Jason Maza, Anna Nightingale, Michael Maris, Letitia Wright, Shanika Warren-Markland, Natasha Sparkes, David Harewood | Written by Ashley Chin, Michael Kyei, Michael Maris, Adrian Scott | Directed by Alex Pillai
It’s quite strange watching Victim after recently viewing GBH because that was a British film that escaped the trappings of being a normal “urban” drama that is almost drowning the industry right now. You expect Victim to be very “urban”, giving an impression it’s about a life of crime, gangs and a typical almost cliché view of “life in London” which is almost threatening to be over used, but surprisingly it’s a film that pulls you into the security of thinking yes; it’s just another one of those typical “urban” films then blows that misinterpretation away.

A trite but well-meaning urban thriller aimed at the Kidulthood market, this wears its moral heart on its sleeve as part-time thief Tyson (Ashley Chin) struggles to pay off his mother's debts and raise his teenage kid sister while escaping his gangster past. The set-ups are familiar, the characters well worn and the film-makers' message (we are all victims) writ cornily large. But co-writer Chin is an imposing screen presence of whom we may expect more in future.

Silent Souls (15)
(Aleksei Fedorchenko, 2010, Rus) Igor Sergeev, Yuriy Tsurilo, Yuliya Aug. 78 mins
Even by Russian standards, this lyrical road movie is a strange world of its own. It's a journey back in time, as much as across a remote landscape, with a friend helping his boss to give his deceased wife her last rites, according to their ancient tribal ways. Along the drive, we're steeped in strange folklore involving vodka, rivers, small birds and ornamental pubic hair. Is it for real? Or an elaborate joke told with a very straight face? Does it matter?
The Five Year Engagement (15)
(Nicholas Stoller, 2012, Us) Emily Blunt, Jason Segel, Chris Pratt. 124 mins
The obstacle to true love is built into the title of this romcom, but it's at least smartly handled, as high-flyer Blunt keeps her fiance in perpetual limbo.
Where Do We Go Now? (12A)

Alex Pillai's urban melodrama has energy, despite the EastEnders-ish moments
Alex Pillai's urban melodrama Victim has a bizarre and overwrought ending and a few EastEnders-ish moments. But there's some energy there. Ashley Madekwe plays innocent Tia, who comes to London to study, staying with her tough cousin; this is Charmaine (Shanika Warren-Markland) who seems to be living the high life, partying and hanging out with male friends including Tyson (Ashley Chin). The awful truth is that Charmaine and her mates are running a honey-trap scam: they seduce drunken City types in clubs, go back with them to their expensive flats, then Tyson and his crew move in, beat them up and steal everything. Inevitably, a romance develops between Tia and Tyson. It doesn't quite come together, yet there's some rough'n'ready force.

From the moment that producer Danny Donnelly’s name is plastered all over the opening credits of Victim, it’s probably best not to expect too much, given his previous producing credit on Adam Deacon’s horrid vehicle Payback Season earlier this year. Though it is better-assembled than many similar derivative crime dramas, there’s nothing here we haven’t seen done better elsewhere.
When nice country girl Tia (Ashley Madekwe) comes to stay with her cousin Davina (Anna Nightingale), her kindly, naïve attitude disturbs the indelicate balance of Davina’s life, which primarily involves acting as a distraction while her gang of friends commit robberies. Meanwhile, lad Tyson (Ashley Chin) – who has caught the eye of both Tia and Davina – is trying to escape a life of crime altogether, and inevitably, this tension all comes to a head with unpleasant results.

This is the review of Cherry Tree Lane, which is screening at Edinburgh International Film Festival. The film stars Rachael Blake, Tom Butcher, Jumayn Hunter, Ashley Chin, Sonny Muslim, Jennie Jacques, Corinne Douglas, Kieran Dooner and Tom Kane, and is directed by Paul Andrew Williams. A couple argue over dinner, she slept with someone else a long time ago and he hasn’t gotten over it. None of this exposition matters as it’s just there to pass the time and never developed. The doorbell rings and a gang of three teenagers force their way into the family home, tying the couple up and then sitting down on the sofas to wait for the couple’s son to come home as they are seeking revenge, claiming the son is a snitch.

Cherry Tree Lane
Stars: Rachael Blake, Tom Butcher, Sonny Muslim, Ashley Chin, Jumayn Hunter, Kieran Dooner, Tom Kane, Jennie Jacques, Corinne Douglas | Written and Directed by Paul Andrew Williams
Cherry Tree Lane, the latest offering from director Paul Andrew Williams, is an urban horror story in which on a seemingly normal day of the week, a normal family on a normal street in London is targeted by a group of youths and subjected to 1 hour 20 minutes of brutality. One word that had become synonymous with early buzz around the movie was ‘intense’. How very true this is, was soon apparent.
Having only recently seen Paul Andrew Williams’ last (and first) feature, London to Brighton, very recently, I was suitably impressed by his style, tone, pace and the way in which he presented gritty subject matter. I had high hopes going in to see the movie and my anticipation was quickly rewarded.

Empire have previewed a brand new trailer for Cherry Tree Lane, Paul Andrew Williams’ latest British thriller. Cherry Tree Lane is Williams’ follow-up to 2008′s The Cottage, and opened to mixed review at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in June.
Cherry Tree Lane features an all-British cast, including performances from Rachael Blake, Tom Butcher, Jennie Jacques, Ashley Chin, Kieran Donner and Sonny Muslim.
Synopsis: Prosperous professional couple Mike and Christine are settling in for a standard evening of wine, TV and low-level marital hostility when a ring on their doorbell changes everything. Turns out their son Sebastian is in a little trouble with some local boys, who are quite prepared to camp out and wait for him to get home… The resulting culture-clash chamber drama is raw, revealing and nerve-splittingly tense.
