The Official Foreign Oscar Race: 63 Titles to Compete with A Prophet and White Ribbon

15 October 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- Finally. With a disqualification here and there, the official list of countries competing for a nomination and then Oscar gold have been submitted and now its time to make some prognostications as to who among 65 will make the final five, or final three, since Sony Pictures Classics have a slam dunk in Palme d'or winner Haneke's The White Ribbon and Jacques Audiard's A Prophet - a "second place" winner at Cannes. If you asked me what films I'd like to see in the final 5 tally, I would love to see the Academy embrace non-mainstream items such as the Romanian pic from Corneliu Porumboiu (Police, Adjective) and Bong Joon-ho's Mother (South Korea), but in all likelihood, the remaining three slots will be a toss up between Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani's hard edged Ajami (Israel's entry), Oscar-voter favorite Giuseppe Tornatore's epic Baaria (Italy's entry) might slip by »

Academy Award’s foreign-language film submissions

8 October 2009 3:26 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

The October 1st deadline for all countries wanting into the Academy Award's foreign-language film category has come and gone. According to IndieWIRE [1], The United Kingdom, which has predominantly submitted Welsh films over the years (if submitting at all), has surprisingly chosen the documentary Afghan Star as its 2009 submission for the Academy Awards. The last time the country received a nomination in this category was in 1999, when Paul Morrison's Welsh and Yiddish Solomon and Gaenor lost out to Pedro Almodovar's All About My Mother. Synopsis After 30 years of war and Taliban rule, pop Idol has come to Afghanistan. Millions are watching the TV series 'Afghan Star' and voting for their favorite singers by mobile phone. For many this is their first encounter with democracy. This timely film follows the dramatic stories of four contestants as they risk all to become the nation's favorite singer. But will they »

Lemon of the Week: Oscars Late with Foreign Nom Paperwork

5 October 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- The October 1st deadline for all countries wanting into the Academy Award's foreign-language film category has come and gone, but you wouldn't know it since no official list of films submitted has been published. You could go tooth and nail on the web and film trades and you'd come up with nada, nothing, zero and zilch – and that goes for the official site. The Lemon of the Week goes to the Oscars for not publishing an official list, which sounds like a trivial complaint, but how difficult can it be for them to collect the titles, include the last minute additions and proudly issue a press release listing all participating nations/first round of nomination hopefuls. Thank to several sites such as IndieWire, we can keep tabs on the most updated list, but I find it a shame that world cinema isn't receiving the extra bit of promo on »

Top Korean Director Coming To America With Clive Owen?

26 August 2009 8:26 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

There are always a handful of insanely talented foreign directors around whose successes have led to visits from Hollywood representatives thirsty for hot names to pimp, drain, and discard. Hong Kong's John Woo is one of the more famous examples of course... after making two very highly regarded action pics in Asia (The Killer, Hard-Boiled) he came to America, had a few pretty impressive hits followed by a couple bombs, and then returned home with his head down, shoulders slumped, and doves dead in his pockets. They often aren't accustomed to the way the system works over here including the lack of artistic control, the test audiences, the multiple cooks in the kitchen... Woo still faired better than many others though who got just one shot before having their return ticket stamped. Chen Kaige went from beautiful and moving films (Yellow Earth, Farewell My Concubine) to the ridiculous Killing Me Softly. Forever Enthralled (2008) Movie Review

11 April 2009 8:19 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

After the critical mauling he received for his shabby wuxia would-be epic “The Promise”, it’s easy to see Chen Kaige’s return to Peking Opera and “Farewell my Concubine” territory as going back to the well. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, as he certainly has a fascinating subject in the form of Mei Lanfang, a legendary figure known for his portrayal of female roles who toured the world and defied the Japanese during the Second World War. Given that he was the real life inspiration behind Leslie Cheung’s character in “Concubine”, his experiences seem a natural, if perhaps a little unimaginative choice for the director as he attempts to return to his glory days. The film follows Mei Lanfang during three phases in his life – his early teenage years when he first rose to prominence by challenging and defeating a renowned traditional opera king (then »

Asian Cinema Scene: Zz Top(less) Photo Scandal

Ah, the perils of going topless.

When last we checked in with Zhang Ziyi, her latest film, Chen Kaige's Forever Enthralled, in which she stars as a Peking Opera singer, had just opened. The film did just fine at the Mainland Chinese box office, but wasn't able to duplicate its success in Hong Kong and may be a "tough sell outside of Asia" because of its unfamiliar subject matter and lack of "dramatic development," according to Variety. The film will be playing in competition at the Berlin Film Festival next month.

That might be that for Ms. Zhang at the moment, were it not for the recent publication of revealing photographs of her on a beach ... in and out of a bikini ... with her billionaire Israeli fiance being extremely playful. Reportedly, Ms. Zhang is "enraged" about the photos. More importantly, as Grady Hendrix commented at Kaiju Shakedown, "One wonders »
