“When I was just a little girl I asked my mother, what will I be? Will I be pretty? Will I be rich? Here’s what she said to me: Qué será, será. Whatever will be, will be”
The opening of Michael Lehmann’s Heathers begins with a dreamy cover of a familiar song. Angelic voices ask a mother to predict the future only to be met with an infuriating response: “whatever will be, will be.” Her answer is most likely intended to present a life of limitless possibility, but as the introduction to a film devoid of competent parents, it feels like a noncommittal platitude. Heathers is filled with teenagers looking for guidance only to be let down by one adult after another. Gen Xers and elder millennials may have glamorized the outlandish fashion and creative slang while drooling over a smoking hot killer couple, but the violent film now packs an ominous punch.

“Are we going to prom or to hell?”
What’s the most important decision a teenager can make? Is it what to do with 5 million dollars two days before aliens blow up the planet? Is it what kind of corn nuts make the best pre-fraternity party snack? According to Michael Lehmann’s dark cult comedy Heathers, the most important decision a teenager can make is whether or not to die by suicide. But what if it’s not a decision at all? What if a hot killer couple blasts through the halls of their suburban high school dressing up their murders as altruistic revenge? The Lady Killers conclude Bad Romance month by putting on their red power scrunchies and fucking each other gently with chainsaws on a very special episode covering one of the hottest killer couples of all time.

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, Rachel Reeves lists the five baddest teen queens of 1989.
Bridging the gap between the ’80s and ’90s, 1989 was an interesting year for horror. With a robust roster of strong slasher icons to lean on, innovative sub-genres and a thriving physical media industry, 1989 desperately clung to the last gasp of the ’80s while tentatively experimenting with what the ’90s might bring. Along with a wealth of later-entry franchise sequels, this indecisive decade straddling also resulted in some eclectic representations of all-to-familiar tropes, including the “bad girl.”

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Meaner Than “Mean Girls.” Hotter Than “Heathers.” Better Than Barbenheimer.
I feel like kind of a basic bitch recommending “Jawbreaker” for After Dark. Don’t get me wrong: Darren Stein’s fiendishly messed-up mean girl movie from 1999 is absolutely worth canonizing as one of the all-time great midnight movies, and generally speaking, I’ll find — and use — any excuse to rewatch this camp masterpiece faster than Carol Kane can say, “Be nice, girls.”
But it feels borderline obvious to suggest this bonafide cult classic and ode to candy-coated cruelty, widely...

1999 is often considered one of the greatest years in Hollywood history. From "The Matrix" to "Fight Club," many films released that year remain important cultural touchstones. The 1990s was also one of the most prolific eras for independent filmmaking; the classics from this decade run the gamut from funny, to tragic, to downright strange. Those three words provide a succinct description of the 1999 classic "Girl, Interrupted," a film that still resonates today, especially with the younger generations of young women.
"Girl, Interrupted" is based on Susanna Kaysen's memoir of the same name, and follows an 18-year-old girl who checks herself into a psychiatric hospital in 1967. While there, Susanna (Winona Ryder) meets a group of eclectic women who make her question where insanity truly lies: inside the mental institution, or outside of its walls? Some of the brightest stars of the late '90s play Susanna's fellow residents, including Angelina Jolie...

The Production: "Heathers: The Musical"
Where You Can Stream It: The Roku Channel
The Pitch: In 1988, director Michael Lehmann, armed with a deeply satirical script by Daniel Waters and tour de force performances by Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, changed the teen movie genre forever. The film was "Heathers," the edgy, snappy, pitch-black response to the John Hughes and Brat Pack era of teen cinema.
"Heathers" is considered one of the most iconic coming-of-age films ever made, but was a box office flop at the time of release. And yet, thanks to home video rentals and endlessly quotable lines, "Heathers" is one of the strongest examples of a cult film crossing the threshold into bonafide classic territory. That film is...

The list of musical adaptations is getting dangerously long and after a few painful disappointments, even theater kids are starting to question reality. Alas, the past few years have made it very clear that at some point, we'll have to accept that the movie-to-musical pipeline (not to be confused with the movie-to-musical-to-movie pipeline) is here to stay. And even though I still shudder every time I remember that "Shrek The Musical" exists, it's always thrilling to learn that another musical is on the way. This time the title in question is "Heathers: The Musical." An adaptation of the 1988 film, "Heathers," this high-energy black comedy spent months on London's West End where it was filmed and will now stream as a Roku Original. Starting September 16, you can check out "Heathers: The Musical" anywhere that The Roku Channel streams.
Sometimes for better and, other times for worse, "Heathers" has seen quite the resurgence over the past decade.

"Heathers: The Musical", streams exclusively September 16, 2022 on The Roku Channel:
"...the first day of school, 1989, and 'Veronica Sawyer' is frustrated with the hellish competitive social hierarchy at 'Westerburg High School', where nerds and underclassmen are pushed around by brutish, idiot jocks like 'Ram Sweeney' and 'Kurt Kelly'.
"After trying to defend her best friend, the cheerful, overweight 'Martha Dunnstock' aka 'Martha Dumptruck', Veronica longs for the days when life was simple and everyone was friends.
"She wishes desperately to be above the drama, but there is only one elite clique who can do that: the 'Heathers', the three most beautiful, most popular girls in school, including weak-willed head cheerleader 'Heather McNamara', bulimic, personality-lacking yearbook committee chair 'Heather Duke' and 'mythic bitch queen' of the school, 'Heather Chandler'.

Hey, Dan Waters! What's your damage? We want a "Heathers" sequel! If you're one of the many fans of this '80s cult classic, you may have spent a lot of time agonizing over not just which plaid blazer to wear to school (never the red unless your name is Heather Chandler) but also the unknown possibility of whether Veronica and the Heathers will finally get a sequel to their teen angst body count.

Life in high school can be rough, as social distinction is pretty much inevitable. In Heathers, the protagonist Veronica (one of Winona Ryder’s first roles) is trying to get along with the most powerful clique at her high school in Ohio. This clan is leaded by three girls that share the name Heather, particularly by Heather Chandler (Kim Walker), an egocentric, superficial and popular bully. Though Veronica hangs out with the so-called Heathers, and helps them out to fulfill their cruel pranks against the unpopular students, at heart she despises everything that Heather Chandler stands for. On the other hand, Veronica is very much attracted to outcast J.D. (Christian Slater’s breakthrough performance), the new boy...

With his feature film debut Heathers, director Michael Lehmann set the world of high school comedies ablaze with his timelessly satirical examination of the horrors of the teenage experience. With its blisteringly pitch-black tone and its razor-sharp dialogue, one of the biggest reasons Heathers continues to resonate with audiences—whether it’s fans who first saw it three decades ago or new generations of fans who continue to discover it to this very day, thanks to the home media market and various streaming platforms that feature Heathers—is the film’s engaging and ingenious cast, who were all able to bring both the memorable characters and screenwriter Daniel Waters’ iconic dialogue to life.
While the entire ensemble of Heathers all played their part in establishing the film as a cult classic in the making, it’s the core quintet of young actors—Winona Ryder (Veronica Sawyer), Christian Slater (J.D.

Less than 15 minutes into 1989’s dark comedy “Heathers,” a rebel teenager played by Christian Slater pulls out a gun and fires blanks at two homophobic jocks, a move that would get him arrested today. My roommates and I sat there with our jaws open: Was this supposed to be funny?
We turned on “Heathers” Sunday night because we wanted to watch something from the ’80s. I knew Slater from “Mr. Robot,” and Winona Ryder from “Stranger Things,” so we figured, why not? It wasn’t until later that I learned that Sunday marked the 30th anniversary of the movie’s original release date, March 31, 1989.
But watching “Heathers” is a very different experience in 2019, a time of school shootings and trigger warnings, than it was in 1989. The film is designed to shock and disturb. So if we find “Heathers” to be in bad taste, does that confirm the stereotype that my generation is too sensitive?...

Dim the lights and pull the curtain: it's time for Riverdale's next musical episode on Riverdale Season 3 Episode 16.
Croquet mallets, plaid skirts, and '80s hair mean that we're heading into the world of Heathers, the teen dark comedy. And just like a musical, the songs infused itself into the plot of Riverdale.
Was the performance a showstopper or did it need to pull the curtain?
"Big Fun" was Riverdale's second debut with a full musical episode; the first was the Carrie musical on Riverdale Season 2 Episode 18.
But this time around, the musical didn't light up the stage like its predecessor.
You could say that it didn't provide ... big fun. (*crickets* You didn't like the play on words? Fine!)
Overall, the musical numbers looked clunky and missed the same sheen/glow that Riverdale typically puts into their performances.
Whereas the cast connected to their roles in the Carrie musical,...

The Riverdale kids took to the stage again for a school production of Heathers: The Musical — and it might be the most fun we’ve ever seen them have? (Maybe they should do more than one of these a year.)
Despite Hermione’s very reasonable complaints about the musical’s violent content — a cast member was murdered last year, after all — Kevin defends Heathers as an accurate portrayal of teenage angst, and demonstrates that by singing the opening song “Beautiful,” with the rest of the gang joining in. (Even Jughead!

Well [bleep] Cheryl gently with a chainsaw, because she is not messing around in this sneak peek at Wednesday’s “Riverdale,” which features The CW series’ cast performing “Heathers: The Musical.”
In the preview below, we find out Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) has rightfully been given the part of Heather Chandler, the Hbic from the ’90s cult classic, while Veronica (Camila Mendes) is taking on Heather McNamara and Betty (Lili Reinhart) is Heather Duke. But, as Kevin — once again the Riverdale High musical’s director — puts it, “Cheryl is the mythic bitch.”
And in the musical episode’s second teaser — which you can view above — Cheryl takes that title up to 11 when she finds out Toni has been set as the choreographer for the production, and she’s, uh, not too happy about her ex girlfriend being in charge of her dance steps.

Two episodes of Paramount Network’s “Heathers” reboot were pulled from the schedule Sunday following the shooting that took place on Saturday at a Pittsburgh synagogue, which left 11 people dead and six injured.
According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, the installments were pulled because the episodes featured active shooter training scenes in the storyline. A spokesperson for Paramount told TheWrap on Monday the decision was made “in deference to the Pittsburgh tragedy.”
The pair of episodes that were pulled from the network’s on-air lineup are currently available via VOD and the Paramount app and website for viewers.

Prior to Heather’s outburst, her dining companion removed her jacket to reveal a “Pro-Life” tee-shirt, and then asked if she could get something off her chest.

The “Heathers” TV series is finally going to make it to air.
The Paramount Network is planning to release the first season of the show ahead of Halloween, but with edits. Beginning Oct. 25, the cable network will air two episodes a night until Oct. 29. The 10-episode series has been condensed down to nine, with certain scenes edited out . The finale will be followed by the premiere of a new Heather’s themed-episode of “Lip Sync Battle” with series stars Melanie Field and Brendan Scannell.
The entire series will also be made available for streaming on the network’s app and website beginning Oct. 22.
“I am beyond excited that American audiences will finally get to see ‘Heathers,'” said series showrunner Jason Micallef. “Obviously I wish fans could see the tenth episode but the producers and I felt strongly about not changing anything in it, and so, it’s been considered too controversial for U.

Four months after Paramount Network scrapped its Heathers reboot, based on the cult movie, the Viacom cable network has scheduled the controversial series in a week-long marathon event beginning October 25.
The high school satire, which contains violent scenes and tackles suicide, has undergone cuts, bringing the number of episodes from 10 to 9. The finale included the famous scene from the movie where the high school is blown up. It is no longer in the show, and I hear the final two episodes were combined to create a cliffhanger. In episode 5, the content in a first-person video game, originally featuring teachers holding guns, was also changed.

It barely registered at the box office in 1988. Yet here I am, 30 years later, in a cinema packed with millennials, watching a 4K restoration in advance of Heather’s re-release on luxury Arrow Blu-ray next month. What a time to be alive.
Heather Chandler (Kim Walker) is the leader of the “Heathers”, a clique of mean girls running their Ohio high school. There are two other Heathers in the group, and then there’s the runt of the litter: Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder). Veronica is a bitch, but her engagement with the girls’ cycle of bullying and mockery is reluctant. Smooth, smarmy Jason Dean (Christian Slater) spots this self-doubt and lures Veronica into his carefree, rebellious world. Veronica and Jason spark up an immediately passionate yet toxic romance. If you've been waiting to watch the Heathers TV show, you may have a long wait ahead of you. Paramount Network has decided to scrap the "pitch-black comedy anthology series" before it ever saw the light of day. On the plus side, they are actively trying to find a new home for the show.A satirical reboot of the 1988 feature film of the same name, Heathers was described this way: Set in the present day, "good girl" Veronica Sawyer (Grace Victoria Cox) deals with a very different but equally vicious group of 'Heathers.' Heather Chandler (Melanie Field) is the unconventional leader of this popular high school clique and rules Westerburg High through fear, intimidation and amazing fashion sense. Heather Duke (Brendan Scannell) is Heather C's #1 sidekick and harnesses the Heather's power to destroy whoever he views as a total discount hobgoblin.

The planned series version of “Heathers” will not air on Paramount Network as planned, Variety has confirmed.
The move to scrap the series entirely comes after it was pushed from its original March 7 launch date in the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida in February. It was then set to debut on July 10, but the debate around gun control and school shootings has not abated since, stoked again when another gunman killing 10 people at a high school in Santa Fe, Texas, earlier this month.
The show was originally ordered at fellow Viacom network TV Land before moving over to Paramount Network (formerly Spike TV) last year. The show, based on the 1988 movie of the same name, is described a pitch-black comedy anthology set in the present day, featuring a group of all-new Heathers, who have the same character names from the original film, but this time, the outcasts...

Paramount Network and parent company Viacom have opted not to air the shelved “Heathers” adaptation, instead planning to shop the series elsewhere.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount development exec Keith Cox said some of the show’s content — guns in the classroom, the explosion of the school at the end the season — was deemed unfit to air on the younger-skewing network in the wake of the Parkland shooting.
“We had multiple meetings, and in the end, we didn’t feel comfortable right now airing the series and I’m not sure when there might be a time that we as a youthful brand at Viacom would feel comfortable,” said Cox.

Paramount Network has set the new premiere date for their “Heathers” TV series for July 10. The announcement was made on social media Tuesday.
The series was originally set to release in March, but the Viacom-owned network decided to postpone the show in the wake of the Parkland shooting in Florida.
“Paramount Network’s original series ‘Heathers’ is a satirical comedy that takes creative risks in dealing with many of society’s most challenging subjects ranging from personal identity to race and socio-economic status to gun violence,” the network said at the time. “While we stand firmly behind the show, in light of the recent tragic events in Florida and out of respect for the victims, their families and loved ones, we feel the right thing to do is delay the premiere until later this year.”

However, the pilot of the series, which is loosely based off the 1988 movie starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, was posted on its website back in February. It was subsequently taken down after the announcement to postpone.
The dark comedy is set in the present day and stars Grace Victoria Cox as Veronica Sawyer, Melanie Field as the body-positive mean girl Heather Chandler, Brendan Scannell as the genderqueer Heather Duke and Jasmine Mathews as the biracial lesbian Heather McNamara.

Dear diary, color me impressed. As a huge fan of 1989’s Heathers, I sat down to watch the first five episodes of Paramount (fka Spike TV) Network’s reboot fully expecting to pull a muscle from rolling my eyes so hard and so often. Instead, version 2.0 of the black comedy made me feel like I’d had a brain tumor for brunch for ever having doubted the potential of the anthology series (premiering Wednesday, March 7, at 10/9c).
Heathers does what I imagined — no, make that what I was positive — was impossible. On one hand, it pays enough homage to the...

Paramount has released the first full red-band trailer for their upcoming series reboot of the classic 1988 film Heathers. This is said to be a "pitch-black comedy anthology set in the present day." It's definitely not the version of the film that you remember. This is a complete reimagining but it deals with the same issues, and it looks pretty wild.
The original film focused on Veronica (Winona Ryder) and her rebel boyfriend J.D. (Christian Slater), dealing with the social order in high school. The update features a new set of popular-yet-evil Heathers. Only this time around the outcasts have become the high school royalty. This definitely makes for an interesting twist.
Heather McNamara (originally played by Lisanne Falk) will be portrayed by Jasmine Mathews; Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty in the film) is a male who identifies as gender-queer whose real name is Heath (Brendan Scannell); and Heather Chandler (originally...
