There are few more evocative first lines in 20th-century American literature than that of James M. Cain's 1934 novel, The Postman Always Rings Twice. "They threw me off the hay truck about noon," begins the book's narrator, an amoral drifter named Frank Chambers. He soon finds himself near a roadside sandwich joint called the Twin Oaks Tavern, a spot that, Chambers says, is "like a million others in California." But bad things happen at this rural little diner — things like adultery, kinky sex and first-degree murder. The book's sinister series...

Adapting the novel of the same name from Joyce Maynard, Labor Day sees writer/director Jason Reitman delivers a movie far removed from the comedy dramas, such as Thank You for Smoking, Juno, and Up in the Air, that made his name. This is pretty much a slow burn, a beautifully shot, and heart breaking, coming of age story about 13 year old Henry Wheeler (Gattlin Griffith), juggling the perils of puberty with caring for his recently divorced mother Adele (Kate Winslet), who has fallen into a deep depression. One fateful Labor Day weekend in 1987, escaped convict Frank Chambers (Josh Brolin) comes into their lives, and turns them upside down. From a narrative point of view, Labor Day emulates the feel of a lazy holiday weekend, slow with nothing much happening, save for some brief flashes of activity. It is an exquisitely shot movie, Reitman capturing the beauty of the New Hampshire setting with every frame,...

This Kate Winslet-starring, wholly unconvincing tale of a fugitive who turns out to be husband material is pure housewives' kitsch
All the signs pointed to Labor Day being a failure: the shamefaced January release, the place where Hollywood buries its dead; the trailers that laboriously gave away its entire story; a unanimous critical pile-on reminiscent of a biker stomping; and the presence at the helm and behind the typewriter of over-promoted adapter-director Jason Reitman, proof positive of the tyranny of good taste.
Based on a novel by Joyce Maynard (who also wrote To Die For), Labor Day gives us Adele, a depressed, agoraphobic single mother (Kate Winslet), seen from the perspective of her devoted 13-year-old son Henry (Gattlin Griffith) via a fatal overdose of portentous voiceover by Tobey Maguire as the adult Henry. At the supermarket they're accosted by an injured man who's just escaped from a prison hospital after an appendectomy.

I don't know where to begin with Jason Reitman's Labor Day. Adapted from the novel by Joyce Maynard, you could have told me it was a Nicholas Sparks adaptation, directed by Lasse Hallstrom and I wouldn't have second guessed the statement. I can't tell if Reitman is having fun with his audience and has actually made a parody of a Sparks adaptation or if he takes this schlock seriously. Either way, it doesn't work. To begin, Labor Day has something of an identity crisis as it's unsure which character it wants to focus on. The voice over that introduces the film is read by Tobey Maguire playing an older Henry Wheeler, the young 13-year-old (Gattlin Griffith) seen throughout the entirety of the film, and son to Adele (Kate Winslet), a woman that has retreated within herself forcing Henry to be the man of the house. Adele was left by...

Were it better, Labor Day might well strike a seductive chord for romantics: a dreamy escaped convict hovers over a mother and son he’s taken hostage over a holiday weekend. One so full of love, cooking, and romance, it will change their lives forever. But the film, based on the Joyce Maynard novel, is so trapped in a dreary Nicolas Sparks-style cliche-ridden universe that we know the entire plot from the start to the over-sentimental climax. Labor Day stars Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin, two usually solid actors, but they’re wasted as Labor Day neither raises the pulse nor unintentionally entertains and while some may eat this mush up, most will see it as a tremendous disappointment from writer/director Jason Reitman (of Juno and Up In The Air fame).

Director Jason Reitman broke through in the business with an impressive trio of sharply written stories about colourful, independent characters – Thank You for Smoking, Juno and Up in the Air. Although these first features will ensure Reitman keeps a good batting average as he moves forward, the director is starting to scale back into less inspired choices. Case in point: Labor Day, a dopey and implausible drama about a woman’s Stockholm syndrome that is one third intimate Alice Munro and two thirds a Nicholas Sparks treacle.
It is perplexing to think about what Reitman saw in Joyce Maynard’s best-selling piece of domestic sap, or what Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin found on his page that drew them into these incompletely drawn characters. Although Labor Day is made with skill and performed with full-bodied conviction, the film features one of the strangest big-screen romances in recent memory, one overwrought...

Viewing the first fifteen or so minutes of Jason (Up in the Air) Reitman’s latest offering unencumbered with any foreknowledge of its genre, you might just imagine you were encountering a gripping thriller in the making a la Panic Room.
First there’s the narration taken directly from Joyce Maynard’s novel upon which the film is based. The adult Henry (Tobey Maguire), looking back at the three days that transformed his world, the Labor Day weekend of 1987, notes:
“It was just the two of us . . . after my father left.”
His mom, Adele (Kate Winslet), approaching 40, has become a recluse since her divorce, seldom leaving her home anymore. She’s enveloped herself in unceasing sadness that began with several contiguous personal losses. Being abandoned by her spouse was the final straw. But as Henry notes, I don’t think losing my father broke my mother’s heart; rather losing love itself.

Paramount has just released a full-length trailer for Labor Day, the upcoming drama starring Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet that centers on young Henry Wheeler (Dylan Minnette/Tobey Maguire), an adolescent struggling to take care of his reclusive mother, Adele (Winslet), after his father leaves. On a back-to-school shopping trip, they run into Frank Chambers (Brolin), who convinces them to take him home and then reveals himself to be an escaped inmate convicted of murder.
The trailer shows that there might be more to Frank’s story than what’s being said in the papers, and soon a romance forms between him and Adele.

Josh Brolin & Kate Winslet star in the new trailer and poster for director Jason Reitman’s Labor Day.
In his Telluride review, Peter Debruge from Variety wrote:
“In the early going, Reitman struggles to balance the competing feelings the scenario evokes. He can count on Winslet, who has long since mastered the role of affection-starved wife in “Little Children” and “Mildred Pierce,” to communicate Adele’s fragility in a matter of a few short scenes, but it’s much harder to accept that a wanted man can be as sensitive as Frank.”
Alex Billington from First Showing said:
“It’s a beautiful film in the way it handles love, emotions, complex characters and relationships. It’s a quiet film, not only in atmosphere but in dialogue, though nonetheless beautifully quiet.”

Ah, love at first hostage. Haven’t we all been there? Huh? Kids? That’s what apparently happens to Kate Winslet’s character in director Jason Reitman’s “Labor Day”, two trailers and poster for which you can check out below if you’re so inclined. I’m a fan of Reitman. He’s done some really interesting movies. Even his last movie, “Young Adult”, which was mostly a miss for audiences, I thought was a very good comedy, the kind that totally ruins your expectations of romcoms. Seriously, you think it’s going one way, and it completely goes another. Great ending, too. “Juno”, “Thank You for Smoking”, all really interesting projects. It looks like “Labor Day” might be another one. Let’s say you were super lonely and a handsome criminal tried to seduce you in a real criminally way, would you never leave the house and love him forever? That is the general idea behind Jason Reitman's upcoming Labor Day. Josh Brolin plays the handsome criminal, Frank Chambers. And Kate Winslet plays the lonely single mother, Adele, who’s really rolling in the deep, if you catch our meaning. The film opens in limited release on Christmas Day. Will he still love her when she can’t wear white?...

The first Labor Day trailer has come online and while the song, "Take Us Alive", by Other Lives may give it an enticing, moody atmosphere, this trailer isn't entirely indicative of the film that will be released on Christmas Day. For starters, there are no peaches. You can't tell the story of Labor Day without peaches! To quote my review of this sappy, melodramatic film: After describing the process as if he Josh Brolin was Fabio with a cooking show, all three of them start digging their hands in a bowl of cut peaches, mixing the ingredients with cinematographer Eric Steelberg getting his camera all the way in there. It's a foodie menage a trois and considering it involves a mother and son along with a convicted murderer, it's more than a little weird. They do, however, show plenty of shots of Brolin's character fixing stuff around the house and...

The title of Jason Reitman's new movie, "Labor Day," might make moviegoers associate it with the recent rash of holiday-themed rom-coms that have graced the big screen ("Valentine's Day," "New Year's Eve"). But they'd be very wrong.
Reitman's film is the opposite of those bubbly flicks in every way, and its trailer, premiering today exclusively on Moviefone, immediately separates it from that less-serious pack.
"Labor Day" takes place around the titular holiday weekend in 1987, where Adele Wheeler (Kate Winslet) and her son, Henry (Gattlin Griffith), are still reeling from the abrupt departure of Henry's father. Their world is turned even further upside down when Frank Chambers (Josh Brolin), an escaped con and convicted murderer, corners them in a store and not-so-nicely asks for a ride back to their house to hide out.
"This needs to happen," Frank growls menacingly, gripping the back of Henry's neck.
But what unfolds when...

Apparently you're going to get your first look at Jason Reitman's Labor Day tomorrow and in advance the following new poster for the film has come online. Of course, for anyone that read my review of the film out of the Toronto Film Festival, you already know I wasn't much of a fan, teasing my review saying Labor Day "is a half-baked melodrama worthy of Nicholas Sparks, not Jason Reitman." The film is based on Joyce Maynard's novel of the same name, centering on 13-year-old Henry Wheeler (Gattlin Griffin), who struggles to be the man of his house and care for his reclusive mother Adele (Kate Winslet) while confronting all the pangs of adolescence. On a back-to-school shopping trip, Henry and his mother encounter Frank Chambers (Josh Brolin), a man both intimidating and clearly in need of help, who convinces them to take him into their home and...

Chicago – The 2013 Chicago International Film Festival may be heading into its final stretch but it’s far from over, as new films from Errol Morris, Joel & Ethan Coen, Jason Reitman, and many more are scheduled to make their Chicago premiere.
A few of the biggies this year weren’t screened in time for press but we have seen some of the smaller, notable films, and you should go out of your way to see a few of ‘em. Pick your favorites, as chosen by Brian Tallerico, Patrick McDonald, and Nick Allen.

A boyish promise between two high school age young men concerning the ownership of a mutual female friend leads to creeper antics years later in this little thriller, spearheaded by an unsettling performance from Sylvester Groth (Inglourious Basterds). This is diet Hitchcock, including a slim 83 min.

Jason Reitman is unstoppable. In his first three features in the director’s chair, he didn’t take a step out of place. And returning once more to the London Film Festival this month with his fourth, Labor Day, he has truly outdone himself, bringing yet another spectacular drama to the big screen.
After watching it at its UK premiere last night, I literally sat in my chair for a full quarter of an hour or more, until the rest of the cinema was empty, just to fully appreciate and digest what I’d just seen – and that is something I’ve never done before.
The film had its debut at Telluride and then Tiff a few weeks back, launching its first clip from the movie out in Toronto. And whilst we wait for that first trailer to land online, Paramount has released the UK poster, with Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin front and centre.

On a back-to-school shopping trip, Henry and his mother encounter Frank Chambers, a man both intimidating and clearly in need of help, who convinces them to take him into their home and later is revealed to be an escaped convict. Paramount Pictures has sent us this first poster for director Jason Reitman’s film Labor Day starring Kate Winslet, Josh Brolin, Gattlin Griffith and Tobey Maguire.
In her Telluride review, Anne Thompson (IndieWire) wrote,
” Jason Reitman’s ‘Labor Day’ is a Suspenseful Romantic Heart-Tugger. I’d like to think that these movie-loving adults will spread the word that audiences around the country should let the studios know that it’s ok to make these movies. Still.”

I caught Jason Reitman's Labor Day in Toronto and wow what a disappointment. I've never read the Joyce Maynard novel it was adapted from, but it may as well be a Nicholas Sparks adaptation for all I care. Here's a snippet from my review that sets up the story and also speaks to one of my biggest issues with it outside the "peach pie" schmaltz: Labor Day has something of an identity crisis as it's unsure which character it wants to focus on. The voice over that introduces the film is read by Tobey Maguire playing an older Henry Wheeler, the young 13-year-old (Gattlin Griffith) seen throughout the entirety of the film, and son to Adele (Kate Winslet), a woman that has retreated within herself forcing Henry to be the man of the house.... Shopping for school clothes just before Labor Day weekend, Adele and Henry are confronted by...

I don't know where to begin with Jason Reitman's Labor Day. Adapted from the novel by Joyce Maynard, you could have told me it was a Nicholas Sparks adaptation and I wouldn't have second guessed the statement. I can't tell if Reitman is having fun with his audience and has actually made a parody of a Sparks adaptation or if he takes this schlock seriously. Either way, it doesn't work. To begin, Labor Day has something of an identity crisis as it's unsure which character it wants to focus on. When a new Jason Reitman movie comes to town, there are a few things you can expect. You know you’re going to get to watch a terrific cast be terrific together, and that J.K. Simmons will pop his head in at some point. You know a light guitar soundtrack will be put to use, and more likely than not, you’ll leave the picture a few laughs lighter, and maybe even a little misty eyed. Reitman has established himself as one of the modern greats when it comes to being consistently good, and while his latest effort, Labor Day, is largely of a piece with those that came before it, hints of leg stretching and boundary pushing make it his most promising film to date.
Rebounding fully from the sweetly sour but slight Young Adult, Reitman’s pet interest in social outcasts faces its biggest challenge yet in Frank Chambers...

With each passing year, Tiff is becoming more and more prominent on the film festival circuit, with more and more Oscar-primed films making their debut out in Canada. And with the initial line-up announced for the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, the trend is definitely continuing.

The film sees Chiwetel Ejiofor lead a fantastic cast, with Michael Fassbender returning to work for his Hunger / Shame director, alongside the likes of Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sarah Paulson, Paul Giamatti, and many more.
Opening the festival will be Bill Condon’s The Fifth Estate, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, alongside Daniel Brühl, Laura Linney, Anthony Mackie, and Stanley Tucci.
