He is also a photographer.

He loves snow very much and he always uses it in his films.

He dedicated his 2004 Cannes film festival foreign cineaste of the year award to his favourite famous Turkish actor Yilmaz Guney.

President of the jury at the Sarajevo Film Festival in 2008.

He stated that, "I dedicate this award to my lonely and beautiful country, which I passionately love" after he won the Best Director award in 2008 Cannes Film Festival.
