A new era for Warner Bros. animation is about to begin.
Veteran animation executive Bill Damaschke, who rose to lead DreamWorks Animation before its sale to NBCUniversal, is in final talks to take over as head of Warner Animation Group, the beleaguered animation arm of Warner Bros. Pictures..
The company has been leaderless since the exit of executive vp Allison Abbate, who departed in the summer of 2022 amid the Warners takeover by Discovery and the shake-up that followed. That included the shelving of Scoob!: Holiday Haunt, a completed feature that was co-written and produced by Abbate’s husband, Tony Cervone.
The executive is expected to report to Warners film bosses Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy. It is unclear what title he will hold.
Damaschke spent 20 years at DreamWorks Animation, joining it from startup level in 1995 and rising to COO. He oversaw productions such as Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from Episodes 1 and 2 of “Velma.”
Months ago, fans celebrated the win of Velma Dinkley being written as a lesbian in the Warner Bros. Animation movie “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!” For years, there had been discussions among fans about the character’s coded queerness, and creatives like James Gunn and Tony Cervone had spoken up about trying — and failing — to explore that in their “Scooby-Doo” projects. So when the marketing for HBO Max’s adult animated series “Velma” didn’t indicate that the title character might be gay — and even revealed that she had a crush on Fred — there was backlash. If the “Scooby-Doo” studio is apparently on board now, why wouldn’t Velma like girls?
The answer is that she does. And so does Daphne. After decades of “friendship” across the plethora of “Scooby-Doo” cartoons, live-action movies and spinoffs, tension breaks and the...

"The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" is a lovely little bit of holiday cheer, following Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Drax (Dave Bautista) as they try to find and retrieve the perfect Christmas present for their friend Peter Quill (Chris Pratt). The light-hearted, fluffy special comes from the mind of James Gunn, who also wrote and directed the "Guardians" films, and it serves as a nice epilogue to Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The special is mostly live-action, but some quick flashbacks from Peter's first Christmas with the Ravagers appear, and they're animated. Gunn wanted to use animation to riff on the animated segments in "The Star Wars Holiday Special," while also paying homage to the work of animation titan Ralph Bakshi.
The animation for the special was done by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, best known for their work on "Robot Chicken," though they have been working in 2D and...

In early October, two weeks ahead of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s Oct. 18 physical release of Scooby-Doo Trick or Treat!, the animated feature had already drummed up a wave of online attention.
While watching the direct-to-video’s digital debut, eager fans learned the movie had done something only a few previous creators in the Scooby-Doo universe had publicly even attempted to do in the franchise’s five-decade history. Director Audie Harrison gave Velma a female love interest in Coco Diablo, the fashionista behind all those Scooby-Doo villains.
“The creation of Coco Diablo was at first just a nice way to streamline some of the ideas in the story, but we quickly realized the dramatic and comedic potential of Velma crushing on a villain,” says Harrison about the creative mechanisms behind queering Velma and her love interest. “The villainous head of the costume crime...

Velma is officially (and finally) queer onscreen.
Animated “Scooby Doo” Halloween film “Trick or Treat Scooby Doo!” includes a sequence where Velma meets costume designer Coco Diablo, and fans are already swooning over the sparks flying between the duo. The confirmation comes years in the making after live-action installments from writer James Gunn, and the animated “Mystery Incorporated” series, hinted at Velma’s sexuality. However, this is the first time the Hanna-Barbera character is overtly gay onscreen.
Gunn, who wrote “Scooby Doo” and “Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed,” tweeted that his film was originally rated by the MPAA as R, and eventually after a “bunch of stuff was changed,” got a PG rating. Some of what was edited out was Velma’s queer relationship. Back in 2020, Gunn confirmed that he “tried” to show Velma as a lesbian in the live-action films starring Linda Cardellini as the beloved character.

The staggering decision to scrap “Batgirl” leads a growing list of HBO Max titles audiences may never see thanks to the Warner Bros. Discovery merger.
On Monday, Deadline broke the news that six more movies and series would not go forward at the streaming service, notably including “Batman: Caped Crusader” from Matt Reeves, who despite the change just cut a multi-year film deal with Warner Bros.
The animated DC series is expected to continue production and possibly stream elsewhere, per Borys Kit for The Hollywood Reporter. But not all of the impacted projects can be so lucky.
“The movie is practically finished and turned out beautifully,” lamented “Scoob!: Holiday Haunt” co-writer Tony Cervone in an Instagram post made when the film’s cancellation was first announced along with “Batgirl” in early August. “I am heartbroken,” he continued.
“Why cancel a 95 finished holiday movie this close to fall?” tweeted co-writer Paul Dini.

For “Batgirl” composer Natalie Holt, Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision to indefinitely shelve the film was a giant “disappointment” to the DC family.
Emmy nominee Holt revealed to Discussing Film that she had spent over a year crafting the original score for the DC film starring Leslie Grace, Brendan Fraser, Jk Simmons, and Michael Keaton, which was set for an upcoming HBO Max release. On August 2, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed the 90 million superhero movie was given the axe for tax purposes.
“I had written about an hour and a half of music,” Holt explained. “I’ve been working on it for a year. So yeah, pretty sad what’s happened to it.”
Holt previously scored Disney+ series “Loki,” for which she is Emmy-nominated. “Ms. Marvel” directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who helmed “Batgirl,” connected with Holt after her Marvel work.

‘Scoob! Holiday Haunt’ Filmmakers Opt to Record the Movie’s Score… After It’s Killed by Warner Bros.
“Batgirl” wasn’t the only nearly completed Warner Bros. film that was killed last week, but in the case of the animated sequel “Scoob! Holiday Haunt,” the film’s producer and co-writer opted to continue working on the film even after it was canceled.
Both “Batgirl” and “Scoob! Holiday Haunt” were effectively killed last week by Warner Bros. Discovery, which now has no plans to release either film in theaters or on HBO Max despite the fact that both were nearly completed. But “Scoob! 2” co-writer and producer Tony Cervone found himself in a unique position – the stage and musicians had already been paid to record the score for the movie. So when that date came after “Scoob! 2” was canceled, Cervone decided to have the musicians record the score – written by Dara Taylor – anyway.

Although Warner Bros. Discovery has officially pulled the plug on release plans for “Scoob!: Holiday Haunt,” a followup to the 2020 animated film “Scoob!,” the film isn’t quite done with work yet. Producer Tony Cervone, who directed the first “Scoob!,” has revealed that the production is still recording the film’s score, despite the official cancellation.
On Saturday, Cervone shared a photo of his team working in a recording studio on Instagram.
“So what do you do when the movie is canceled, but you’ve already paid for the stage and the musicians?” Cervone wrote in the caption. “You record the damn score!”

This marks the fourth year that the entire membership of the academy can take part in the nomination stage of the Animated Feature Oscar race. Previously, only select members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch and invited members from the other branches could serve on the committee that decided the nominees. Collectively, the committee tended to favor traditional and stop-motion films over CG fare. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscars predictions for Best Animated Feature.)
Mandatory attendance at screenings has been dropped and voters who want to be on the nominations committee need only attest to having seen all the contenders at theaters or screenings or by way of the the academy’s streaming site.

France, for example, saw a 23% increase in ticket sales across the Top 10 over the most recent weekend, led by Gaumont’s new local comedy Tout Simplement Noir and followed by Warner Bros’ Scoob!, also a new entry, which did $900K in the Hexagon – and $1.8M total in five markets.
Scoob!, the feature animation from director Tony Cervone, opted to have a PVOD and digital ownership release instead of theatrical domestically. It began streaming on HBO Max in June, but is hitting cinemas in some overseas markets. The full weekend was $1.8M from France, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Vietnam. The results are strong in light of the ongoing crisis. Spain opens today and there are about 20 more releases still to come.

“Scoob!” will be hitting theaters in some overseas markets despite skipping the North American box office in May due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Warner Bros. has confirmed the film will enjoy a combined theatrical release and premium VOD outing internationally — a strategy that was also recently employed by Universal, which plans to release animated feature “Trolls World Tour” in U.K. theaters when they reopen.
The global theatrical release for “Scoob!” will begin on July 8 in France, Holland and Switzerland, with additional countries rolling out over the summer. In France, which opened cinemas on June 22, theaters sold between 850,000 and 900,000 admissions through Sunday — down 50% from an average week in June, but still an impressive turnout given the severity of France’s Covid-19 outbreak and the evident confidence among audiences to return to cinemas.
Meanwhile, “Scoob!” will be available via PVOD from Wednesday in Australia and New Zealand.

About a month and a half after it made its debut online for premium video on demand, the animated film “Scoob!” will launch on HBO Max on June 26.
The animated “Scooby Doo” film debuted online on May 15 for $19.99 after its original June theatrical release date was scrapped. Warner Bros. hasn’t released digital box office numbers for how the kids movie has performed since its digital release, but it only makes sense that the new film could help draw eyes to the new streaming service, which launched shortly after “Scoob!” began its PVOD run.
The two seasons of the original animated series “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?” are available now on HBO Max.

Since childhood, Shaggy Rogers, Fred Jones, Velma Dinkley, and Daphne Blake have been solving mysteries across the globe accompanied by Shaggy’s pet dog, Scooby-Doo. In “Scoob,” which hit video-on-demand on Friday, Will Forte’s Shaggy belts a stellar rendition of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s “Shallow” with his four-legged pal Scooby-Doo. It turns out that Forte has been rehearsing for it all his life… because that’s his go-to song at karaoke with Jason Sudeikis.
“I had zero practice for that!” Forte told TheWrap of the “Scoob” bit. “It was thrown at me at the end of a session — I think they were scared I was going to lose my voice, so I think we did it at the end of the session. They said, ‘Oh, by the way, you’re going to sing this.’ But I guess I’ve been rehearsing it all my life because Jason Sudeikis and I, we do a lot of karaoke together, and that became one of our go-to songs.”

Scoob! arrived on VOD over the weekend, allowing fans and families to tuck into the first big budget Scooby-Doo movie in 16 years. That wasn’t the only appeal, though, as the animated film is also stuffed full of other classic Hanna-Barbera characters. Alongside Mystery Incorporated themselves – Fred (Zac Efron), Daphne (Amanda Seyfried), Velma (Gina Rodriguez), Shaggy (Will Forte) and Scooby (Frank Welker) – there’s the likes of Blue Falcon (Mark Wahlberg), Dynomutt (Ken Jeong), Captain Caveman (Tracey Morgan) and Dee-Dee Sykes (Kiersey Clemons).
As you’d imagine, Warner Bros. has big plans for Scoob! to be expanded into a new franchise, assuming it does well. This is something that the filmmakers behind it are excited for, too. In an interview with Den of Geek, director Tony Cervone talked about how he saw Scoob! not just as an adaptation of the Scooby-Doo world, but as a whole other alternate universe populated by Hb creations.

Chicago – It was inevitable that the iconic cartoon character Scooby Doo would get the modern animation treatment, and the new film “Scoob!” opens May 15th, 2020 on VOD platforms. Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com, reviewed the film during the Eddie Volkman Show.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
“Scooby Doo, Where Are You?” was a Saturday Morning Cartoon in the era of three network television, and premiered in 1969. Since then, it’s become a major franchise for the Hanna Barbera animation house, and has had more variations than the Marvel universe. “Scoobs!” Is a revival of the main characters, the dog named Scooby Doo (voice of Frank Welker) and his gang of mystery solvers … including Fred (Zac Efron), Daphne (Amanda Seyfried), Velma (Gina Rodriguez) and Scoob’s best friend Shaggy (Will Forte).
“Scoobs!” Is a space adventure, most likely to create a setting for its modern animation, and contains many mind blowing scenes. Also this story...

This interview contains very mild character spoilers for Scoob!
Like many of us, Scoob! animation coordinator Bill Haller’s first memories of Scooby-Doo center around the long-lost Saturday morning lineup.
“I grew up with Scooby-Doo as part of Saturday morning cartoons. Me and my sister sitting in front of the TV and arguing over what lineup we were going to do. I don’t even know if they have lineups like that anymore?” Heller laughs.
Those warm recollections shaped the director’s childhood, which made taking on Scoob!, the new Scooby-Doo movie from Warner Bros., an incredibly special experience. “Scooby-Doo and Hanna-Barbera were such a big part of growing up for me and my sister. It kind of engrossed our culture. So, honestly, to be involved with a project like this one is a real honor along with a responsibility to pay homage and do it right.”

It’s a relatively slim week in new releases, even by the standards of the ongoing coronavirus shutdown — although there are a few gems to be found, if you hunt hard enough. Families have “Scoob!” which Warner Bros. decided to make available directly via digital, following the recent success of “Trolls World Tour.” And grownups can check out Tom Hardy playing the shell of a notorious gangster in “Capone.” Here are the week’s new releases, with excerpts from reviews and links to where you can watch them.
High-profile on-demand studio and indie offerings:
Capone (Josh Trank)
Distributor: Vertical Entertainment
Where to Find It: Rent on Amazon, iTunes and other on-demand platforms.
In “Capone,” Tom Hardy, as the aging, broken-down, not-all-there Al Capone, acts under a corpse-gray mask of desiccated-mobster makeup. Is “Capone” a fascinatingly idiosyncratic twilight-of-the-mobster drama? Or is it a “Saturday Night Live” sketch with pretensions? It may be a bit of both.

When Will Forte signed on to voice the iconic and beloved “Scooby-Doo” character Shaggy in the upcoming animated film “Scoob,” he knew it would be a daunting task.
“Shaggy is very beloved, and it has everything to do with Casey Kasem and that amazing voice of his, and it just is an iconic voice like no other,” Forte told TheWrap. “That is what I think really made people fall in love with Shaggy in the first place. I thought Matthew Lillard did an amazing job… and as much of an honor as this is, it was an incredibly daunting thing to come in and have to do the same thing that already was just such a tough thing for him to do. So I had to come in figure out a way to do my own version when these two people have done such an amazing job. It was nerve...

Legacy megafans of Mystery Inc. should take heed: Scoob! is less origin reboot, more launchpad for Hanna-Barbera’s cinematic universe. Truthfully, it’s sweet and sincere and stresses teachable moments no matter your age. You’ll witness puppy-love as Norville “Shaggy” Rogers meets Scooby Dooby Doo for the first time, and smile as the gang solves their first childhood case, but then characters from all over Hanna-Barbera’s catalog shanghai focal spotlights. Blue Falcon, Dick Dastardly, Captain Caveman. These are just a few of the friends who drop in throughout Scoob!, which makes Tony Cervone’s updated children’s “horror” show more a gimmicky crossover than dedicated property reanimation.
On a sunny California beachfront, loner Shaggy (later voiced by Will Forte) shares stolen gyro meat and immediate companionship with his new best friend, Scooby-Doo (Frank Welker). On Halloween, Fred (Zac Efron), Velma (Gina Rodriguez), and Daphne (Amanda Seyfried) welcome the munchie-hungry goofballs into their crew.

“Scooby-Dooby-Doo, where are you?” It’s not only the refrain from the classic cartoon theme song of what is arguably Hanna-Barbera’s crown jewel, but it’s also a question many movie fans have been asking for years. Though the franchise has had plenty of hilarious and inventive modern reinterpretations along with loads of home video movie releases, it has been 16 years since the dog detective headlined a big budget Hollywood movie. So that’s why the announcement of a new animated feature, Scoob!, was so exciting. Like pretty much every movie this year, the Covid-19 crisis derailed this film’s hopes for a theatrical release, but Scoob! is still headed to our small screens and it’s a goofy and gorgeous good time.
It’s best to go into Scoob! with your expectations in the right place. This is a Scooby-Doo movie. As in, it’s a movie about Scooby-Doo.

For over half a century, Scooby Doo and his friends have been a staple of cartoons, as well as, for a time, in live action adventures on the big screen. Now, the talking dog and pals are back in Scoob!, which is part origin story, part adventure tale (no pun intended). How does the animated canine function in CGI? Well, pretty good, actually. This is a fun, sometimes strange, and even emotionally satisfying movie. What could have been stale and recycled never comes off as such. The film just offers up some good family friendly fun. Especially these days, and at this specific moment, what more can you ask for? The film is a new Scooby Doo adventure, while also functioning as an origin story for the Mystery Inc. group that children of all ages have adored. As a boy, Norville “Shaggy” Rogers (voice of Will Forte) is a lonely kid,...

Ignore the weird Simon Cowell gags. While the choice to move “Scoob!” from theatrical release to a premium VOD home has been met with far less outrcry than the same decision on the part of “Trolls World Tour,” the film deserves just as much attention. There’s a moment early in “Scoob!” when a bowling alley attendant tells a group of crime-solving teens that some robots have just attacked “a talking dog and this gangly dude who had the habit of using the word like at the start of every sentence, almost as if he was some middle-aged man’s idea of how a teenage hippie talks.”
That’s the world in which this latest iteration of the Scooby-Doo franchise exists – a world that’s very aware of its own silliness and its time-honored tropes, a world where apprehended bad guys not only say, “I would have gotten away with it, if it wasn’t for you meddling kids,” but say it in a way that makes fun of the fact that they’re saying it.

With “Scoob!,” Warner Bros. Animation launches a new Hanna-Barbera cinematic universe built around the crime-fighting Mystery Inc. teenage gang and its lovable Great Dane. The plan was to release the franchise’s first CG-animated feature theatrically on May 15, but, of course, the pandemic intervened, so it’s going straight to VOD instead.
Whether or not “Scoob!” taps as large an audience as DreamWorks’ “Trolls World Tour” remains to be seen, but, according to director Tony Cervone, a veteran of the Hanna-Barbera and Looney Tunes home video franchises, it offers nostalgic comfort food for quarantined families. “Sure, I would’ve loved a theater experience, but we’re in a weird time,” he said. “It’s a bummer. But because of that, there’s families at home looking for stuff to watch, and there’s something reaffirming and warm and fuzzy and bright and colorful [about ‘Scoob!’].”

Exclusive: We’ve learned and confirmed that some exhibitors will be sharing in this weekend’s revenues for the Warner Bros. digital and Pvod release of Scoob!
Warner Bros. opted to take their Tony Cervone-directed animated release into homes this Friday instead of theaters given the continued near nationwide exhibition shutdown during Covid-19. Scoob! will be available for a 48-hour Pvod rental at the price of $19.99 U.S. or for the electronic-sell-through price of $24.99 U.S.
Now the way this works is that those ordering Scoob! through an exhibitor’s website will be redirected to another website where they can purchase or rent the title. While Warner Bros. didn’t disclose the exhibition revenue share terms on Scoob!, we’ve heard from some that those movie theater websites directing traffic will then get a share of the respective revenue earned though their site (around 10% of each purchase or rental).

Color and music figure prominently in “Scoob!,” an origin story about how the gang on the classic 1970s Saturday-morning cartoon first become acquainted. Warner Bros. is offering the animated film — which features the voices of Will Forte (Shaggy), Zac Efron (Fred), Gina Rodriguez (Velma), Amanda Seyfried (Daphne) and Frank Welker (Scooby) — on VOD starting May 15.
“It was great to find out where the characters meet and what their first mystery is,” says director Tony Cervone. “And it was cool to do it in a big, special and fun way.”
Cervone, an animation veteran, has worked on projects including “Space Jam,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and “Pinky and the Brain.” With “Scoob!,” his feature directing debut, he mixes classic touches with fresh ideas to help fans hark back to familiar tropes without letting the look get stale. “It’s a dance,” he says of finding the right balance.
Color was one way to achieve that equilibrium.

The closure of cinemas in Australia, the Us and many other markets is resulting in a steady stream of movies going straight to digital platforms.
Among the latest titles that are bypassing cinemas are Universal’s comedy The King of Staten Island in the Us (although its status in Australia is unclear) and, worldwide, Warner Bros’ animated title Scoob! and Paramount’s comedy The Lovebirds.
Meanwhile Universal Pictures’ intention to release films in cinemas and on Premium VOD when cinemas re-open in the Us has aroused the ire of AMC Theatres, which operates 1,000 cinemas in the Us, Europe and the Middle East.

Previously scheduled to come out in theaters on May 15th, the animated movie Scoob! was pulled from Warner Bros.' release schedule back in March, but now it's being reported that the film will be coming out on May 15th after all, albeit on VOD.
Deadline reveals that Scoob! will "be available for a 48-hour rental Pvod [premium video on demand] period for U.S. $19.99, or Est price of $24.99." Additionally, Exhibitor Relations confirms that viewers will also be able to own Scoob! via digital purchase beginning May 15th.
This follows in the footsteps of other films like The Invisible Man and The Hunt switching to premium VOD releases after their theatrical runs were cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic.
We'll be sure to keep Daily Dead readers updated on other release dates as more news is revealed in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we have the previously released trailer and official details on Scoob!

Warner Bros. had already delayed the release of their big screen Scooby-Doo reboot, Scoob! indefinitely a few weeks back thanks to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. But now it turns out that they’re skipping a theatrical release entirely and instead going directly to streaming.
“While we’re all eager to be able to once again show our films in theaters, we’re navigating new, unprecedented times which call for creative thinking and adaptability in how we distribute our content,” Warner Bros. chairman-ceo Ann Sarnoff said in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter). “We know fans are eager to see Scoob! and we’re delighted we can deliver this feel-good movie for families to enjoy while they’re home together.”
Scoob! will now become available to both rent and buy on May 15. Rental price will be $19.99 for a 48 hour window, or you can purchase for $24.99. Scoob! is directed by Tony Cervone,...

Warner Bros.’ “Scoob,” an animated film based on “Scooby-Doo” characters, will skip its planned theatrical release and instead launch next month on digital rental services.
Starting May 15, “Scoob” will be available to rent for $19.99 in the U.S. and Canada. It will also be available to buy for $24.99. The movie, geared toward younger audiences, was originally scheduled to debut in theaters on May 15, but was indefinitely delayed as the coronavirus pandemic forced cinemas to close.

Warner Bros. announced on Tuesday that it will release the family animated film “Scoob!” for digital ownership and premium video-on-demand on May 15, making it the second film initially planned for theatrical release to jump straight to home release thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.
The move comes two weeks after the release of Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s “Trolls World Tour,” which was initially set for release in theaters on April 10 but was moved to VOD after theaters worldwide began closing because of the pandemic. While no specific numbers on digital rentals have been reported, “Trolls World Tour” has ranked as the top-selling film on multiple digital rental services, including Google Play and FandangoNOW. Disney has also announced that its adaptation of the young adult novel “Artemis Fowl” will be pulled from theaters for exclusive streaming on Disney+.

As more studios experiment with bringing high-quality pics into the home during the current Covid-19 home quarantine, Warner Bros is jumping into the mix by fast-tracking its animated pic Scoob! onto Pvod and premium digital ownership on May 15 in the U.S. and Canada. The Tony Cervone-directed feature animated take on the famed Hanna-Barbera cartoon TV series Scooby Doo was originally set to open May 15 in theaters.
Scoob! will be available for a 48-hour rental Pvod period for U.S. $19.99, or Est price of $24.99. Warner Bros has no future plans to have big pics like Wonder Woman 1984, Tenet or In the Heights skip theaters and head into homes. In the Heights was re-scheduled today for June 18, 2021. If there are any movie theaters open in mid-May, I understand Scoob! will not play in cinemas.
