Confidential Informant opens with a voiceover telling us what wonderful people cops are, especially those with combat experience. Case in point Tom Moran and Mike Thorton. We get to see them raid a crack operation and then lie to their superior over little things like not having a search warrant. Wonderful people indeed.
While tossing a baseball around with his son Moran collapses in pain. His wife Anna tells him he needs to see a doctor. He’s seen a doctor, three of them in fact, and they all tell him he has stomach cancer and not too long to live. Coincidentally enough another cop, Frank, was talking at the bar about how much money the department pays out to your family if...

"I think between the two of us, we can figure out what happened to him quicker than the cops." Mpca has unveiled an official trailer for Double Life, a mystery thriller made by Canadian filmmaker Martin Wood. Another of these forgettable films that is just being quickly dumped on VOD as more mindless content to consume. The film follows a widow who finds out from her late husband's mistress that his death was not an accident. The two women will form an unlikely alliance to uncover the truth behind his murder and unmask the man they both loved. Of course they're going to end up deeply in trouble way over their heads. Double Life stars Javicia Leslie, Pascale Hutton, Vincent Gale, John Cassini, Aaron Douglas, and Niall Matter. Everything about this looks obvious and cliche, and the twist probably isn't going to be memorable. // Continue Reading ›...

Less all-out horror and more a sci-fi thriller, Volition tells the story of James, who sees his mother die in a car crash in a vision two days before it actually happens. Unable to stop it because no-one will believe him, twenty-odd years later he has come out of the foster care system struggling with life because he knows everything is predestined. He then sees his own death and follows a path that he hopes will stop it.
Volition manages to have an interesting, captivating and detailed story that could easily get really confusing but because of how well the film is edited and made, is surprisingly easy to follow. We head back and forth in time, always leading back to present day...

Snarled loops of time travel have proved a surprisingly versatile and rewarding fantasy-cinema trope in recent years, from the big-budget likes of “Edge of Tomorrow” to such enterprising indies as “Predestination,” not to mention comedies (“Palm Springs”), horror (“Happy Death Day”), romance (“Before I Fall”) and more. “Volition” makes a worthy addition to that roster: . Tony Dean Smith’s clever thriller lands July 10 on digital platforms and available theater screens, where it should continue to be as well-received by sci-fi fans as it has been on the genre-festival circuit.

"Maybe it's time you learn the truth about your condition." Giant Pictures has debuted an official trailer for an indie sci-fi thriller titled Volition, which won the Best Feature award at the Philip K. Dick Film Festival last year. The word "volition" means "a choice or decision made by the will"; making the choice for yourself. The film is about a man afflicted with clairvoyance who tries to change his fate when a series of events leads to a vision of his own imminent murder. An interesting twist. It's described as a "tightly-wound puzzle of a ride", and a "mind-bending science-fiction thriller, where the line between fate and free-will blurs." Starring Adrian Glynn McMorran, Magda Apanowicz, John Cassini, Frank Cassini, Aleks Paunovic, and Bill Marchant. Not really sure what to make of this from this trailer, there's a lot going on but not a lot of it makes sense at first.

A man afflicted with clairvoyance tries to change his fate when a series of events leads to a vision of his own imminent murder in Volition. Check out the trailer:
From the Smith Brothers and Director Tony Dean Smith comes Volition — a mind-bending science-fiction thriller, where the line between fate and free-will blurs.
When you know your world is predetermined, it’s hard to care about your choices. This is true for James Odin. On a rain-soaked night in 1991, two cars collide, leaving all drivers dead on the scene, including the mother of the lone survivor — a child — James Odin. It’s a tragedy. But what’s more tragic is that seven-year-old James foresaw the accident happening two months prior. He tried to prevent it, but who’s going to believe a kid who claims to see the future? Twenty-plus years later, James is a product of the failed foster care system.

Withdrawn Avery Malone, a wannabe writer and lonely librarian, gets her big break when she’s hand-selected to assist her hero, reclusive author, Caleb Conrad. Whisked away to Caleb’s remote country estate, Avery is given her one and only task: to participate in a controlled psychological experiment in fear that will serve as the basis for Caleb’s next thriller novel. What could possibly go wrong?
Turns out quite a lot!
But let me be honest for a moment. Until the turn of events part way through the film, I was actually about to write off True Fiction completely. The first third of the film follows every cliche, every trope, hitting a myriad of story beats that we’ve seen before. True Fiction is incredibly true to its title, as writer/director Braden Croft blurs the line between what’s real and what’s not, for both the film’s protagonist and the audience, creating an interesting, but an often confusing mind game. The film is essentially Misery, but in reverse. The film follows an aspiring writer, Avery (Sara Garcia), who works in a library, but is soon hired for the job of a lifetime: the assistant to her favorite horror fiction writer, Caleb Conrad (John Cassini). Much like The Shinning’s Jack Torrance, Caleb does his best work isolated in the mountains. The film is very Stephen King-esque in style and substance, and it’s no surprise that this dream job turns out to be a nightmare.
Upon first arriving at this cabin in the woods, Avery is told that she can’t keep her phone in order to avoid distraction.

Those predisposed to emotional manipulation by dogs at play and in peril will be easily swayed by director Charles Martin Smith’s “A Dog’s Way Home.” Based on the bestselling novel by W. Bruce Cameron, this story about a lost dog attempting a 400-mile journey home takes us on an emotional roller coaster, most of it with a lump in our throats. However, for every shameless trick the filmmakers employ to pluck our heartstrings, resonant chords are struck elsewhere, teaching audiences about family, the power of unconditional love, and the ripple effects of compassion. In the pantheon of puppy pictures, this doesn’t rank as top dog, but it’s certainly not the runt of the litter either.

TORONTO -- Canada's two premium pay TV networks attracted attention and honors Tuesday as their cutting-edge series led all nominees for the Geminis, Canada's TV awards.
"Slings & Arrows," a dark comedy about a dysfunctional theater company, grabbed 14 Gemini nominations, while sci-fi drama ReGenesis followed with 12. Both series air on the Movie Network and Movie Central, the country's two premium pay TV networks.
Slings, which airs stateside on the Sundance Channel, is in its third and final season.
Other multiple nominees in the Gemini hunt include the crime drama Intelligence and the news information series The Fifth Estate. Both of the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. series earned 11 noms.
