The timeline for a successful video game franchise usually goes like this: The game comes out and soon becomes popular among players. Avid fans start creating content inspired by the game and their favorite characters, helping bring that IP into pop culture. There might be a movie or TV adaptation. And as more people are introduced to the game’s world, more fans are created, leading to more demand for derivative content. Et cetera, et cetera.
But the leaders at Liithos, a multimedia gaming studio led by former PlayStation executives, are about to do things a little differently with their first studio IP, Ashfall, which is set in a post-apocalyptic Pacific Northwest ravaged by climate change, civilian fighting and mutations caused by a dark energy. The series follows Ash Naranjo, a character who was born without arms and is given cyborg-like implants to help him save his family and homeland.

(Warning: This article contains spoilers for the Disney+ Marvel series “WandaVision” through the third episode)
Eagle-eyed fans watching the first three episodes of “WandaVision” have almost certainly noticed an odd little logo — a sword encased in a circle — pop up at least once in each episode. The symbol came to the forefront at the end of the third episode, when Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) noticed that Geraldine (Teyonah Parris) was wearing a necklace with that sword logo on it.
And then Wanda seemingly ejected Geraldine from the world.
The logo in question is almost certainly a reference to S.W.O.R.D., aka the Sentient World Observation Response Department.
What exactly is S.W.O.R.D.? Similar to S.H.I.E.L.D. (Marvel loves their acronyms!), S.W.O.R.D. is a counterterrorism and intelligence agency. Unlike S.H.I.E.L.D., which focuses on...

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Star Wars #6
The latest issue of Marvel Comics' Star Wars series has introduced a surprising addition to the newly refreshed canon.
A mysterious figure from Jason Aaron and John Cassady's first arc was revealed to be Han Solo's wife in issue #6 this week.
And no, we aren't talking Leia. The newcomer introduces herself as Sana Solo.
The current storyline is set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.
Whether Sana Solo will have any presence in Jj Abrams's Star Wars: The Force Awakens remains to be seen as, of course, details of the new film remain as tightly under wraps as ever.
Marvel has also been publishing a Darth Vader ongoing and Princess Leia miniseries. Since the Star Wars Extended Universe comics and books were declared non-canon, the past and future are up for grabs in the rejigged continuity.

Big week for Bat-talk! Last week, I published a couple Geekly columns focusing on the Dark Knight Detective. First, I drew up my list of the hundred greatest Batman comics, movies, TV episodes, etc. Then I considered whether it was possible to have entirely too much Batman at one time. And would you believe it, everyone has an opinion about Batman–and a ton of great recommendations! Read on for the highlights. Darren Franich was dead-on right in his piece 'Dark Knight Fatigue Rises,' but from just one perspective. In July of 2013, Cartoon Network debuted DC Animation's new CG series "Beware the Batman.

Garrett Hedlund fell in love with Kerouac's electric prose as a teenager. Now aged 28, he plays Dean Moriarty, the free-thinking spirit at the heart of On the Road. Here, he discusses drugs, his love of the 50s – and the appeal of America's backroads
Did you know much about the beat generation, Jack Kerouac and his novel On the Road before you made this film?
Yes. I was 17 when I read the book. I was such a literature freak, I was doing world literature, creative writing and photojournalism at the time. I fantasised about F Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby – I loved it, and then I read everything Jd Salinger had to offer. Then I was turned on to Kerouac, and his spontaneous prose, his stream of consciousness way of writing. I admired him so much, and I romanticised so much about the 40s and 50s.
So you weren't always going to be an actor?...

The X-Men saga hit a dry spell of really iconic stories for about a decade, but thanks to the partnership of Joss Whedon and John Cassady for Astonishing X-Men, we have stories that take full advantage of Professor X’s roster. The third chapter in their installment, titled Torn, follows an aftermath of events including the incarceration of Ord, the resurrection of Colossus, the emergent sentience of the danger room, and the reformation of the Hellfire Club. It made for two particularly action-packed books that led nicely into Torn, a very twisted third part that relies heavily on psychic trickery and fear. It’s a fantastic piece which leans heavily on Kitty Pryde as well as some younger, less renowned mutants for pivotal moments.

Opening titles sequences can indeed be viewed as an afterthought, but they are in fact extremely important to a show’s success. The opening title sequence of a television series can easily attract or repel viewers, and effect their decision as to whether or not it will be worth their time to invest and watch, or instead change the channel. Most television series don’t last very long, and the higher the ratings in those first few episodes, the better chance the show has of sticking around. Titles serve as a first impression, and as we all know, first impressions are important, especially in this day and age when there are so many other television shows to choose from. The title sequence thus fulfills the role of outlining the showrunner’s intentions and sets up the expectations of those watching. The sequence should also reflect the tone of the show,...

It's more than half a century since Allen Ginsberg's poem Howl landed like a bombshell in the staid world of 1950s America. But what was the poet really like? Friends and colleagues remember him
When Allen Ginsberg performed at the Six Gallery reading in San Francisco 1955, he was a fretful, unpublished poet, a man approaching his 30th birthday with a nagging sense that time was running out. The poet Gary Snyder predicted the night would be a "poetickall bomshell". He was right, but really, the bombshell was Howl itself. Ginsberg's poem was an incantatory epic – emotionally and sexually explicit and intent on exploding the anxieties of the atomic age. It helped jump-start the counter-cultural revolutions of the next decade and its author was hailed as the voice of the Beat Generation.
He may have been the most important American writer of the last century. He certainly thought he could be.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer never was a ratings darling but it caught the cultural zeitgeist and was an important factor in pop culture during its seven season run (1997-2003). Thankfully, when the series ended, showrunner Joss Whedon felt the characters weren’t done yet and agreed to continue their story in the pages of the Dark Horse comic. Dubbed Season Eight, the 40 issue run completes its run this month with a ninth season on tap.

Zap2it has the first look anywhere at the title sequence for NBC's new series "The Cape."
The show wears its comic-book inspiration proudly, and the opening credits reflect that. Before we see any live-action images of series stars David Lyons, Summer Glau or James Frain, we see about 20 seconds of comic-book panels depicting our hero -- cop-turned-masked avenger Vince Faraday (Lyons) -- and his adventures in Palm City. (Comic artists Michael Gaydos, Gabriel Hardman and John Cassady created the pen-and-ink versions of the characters.)
The accompanying music by "Battlestar Galactica" and "Human Target" composer Bear McCreary is appropriately old-school and dramatic as well.
"The Cape" premieres at 9 p.m. Et Sunday (Jan. 9) on NBC. What do you think of the credit sequence? Pretty cool, no?...

NBC decided to branch out from the superhero genre after the cancellation of Heroes by...you guessed it, returning to the superhero genre with The Cape! And we've got reactions to the panel and screening of the very first episode!
The Cape follows police officer Vince Faraday (David Lyons), disillusioned by corruption in the force and leaving to take a job with the privatized law-enforcement agency Ark. But before you can say "bif, bang pow!" he finds himself framed by company head Peter Fleming (James Frain) as a supervillain, and eventually believed dead. Only the timely intervention of the Carnival of Crime can teach Vince the skills he needs to take to the streets, take down the real villains and clear his name.

Welcome to our Friday preview of Comic-Con 2010. Most of the day seems to be light on movie coverage so that means will be beefing up all the FusedTV stuff because we know your are TV lovers out there too. How about some Walking Dead? maybe some Bones? perhaps True Blood? I was thinking some Stargate Universe myself. All that and more on the TV front happens day 2 of Sdcc. On the movie front its all about The Green Hornet and The Other Guys.

Yesterday we got a look at the San Diego Comic-Con 2010 schedule for Wednesday and Thursday of the show, and today the Friday schedule has landed online.
You can read the whole Friday lineup at the Comic-Con website, but heed this warning: It's intimidating, to say the least.
I've sifted through it to find some of the events you might be particularly interested from the worlds of comics, movies, television, games, and anything else that seemed appropriately awesome. Feel free to chime in via the comment section with the panels, events, and other fun stuff you want to check out Friday.
We're big fans of "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" animated series here at Splash Page HQ, and the added bonus of a "Young Justice" premiere has this one underlined on our Comic-Con schedule:
10:30-11:30 Batman: The Brave and the Bold Screening and Q&A— The Caped Crusader...

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will return—yet again, as The Hollywood Reporter notes. Nickelodeon has shelled out a reported $60 million for world rights (including merchandising) to those heroes on the half-shell created by Kevin Eastman & Peter Laird in black-&-white comics (and then popularized by toons and toys). Nickelodeon plans a new CG-animated show (supplanting the one now running Saturday mornings through August 2010 on the CW) and another movie (live action or animated?), both to bow in the Mayan disaster year, 2012. Playmate Toys will continue to do the action figures and other items. For more, see this link.
Sf TV
The CW has renewed The Vampire Diaries, giving the new series nine more first season episodes.
ABC has also renewed Castle starring Firefly’s Nathan Fillion for the rest of the season (nine more episodes).

Established 1974! Our news column takes up skywriting.
Updates
Look up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! Yes, actually it Is a plane! And what will it be doing but skywriting the letter “V” in the air above beginning this Friday (and continuing numerous times daily through November 3). Where? At 26 national landmarks, all undisclosed locations so far. Why? To promote ABC’s new V mini-series incarnation. Wtf? This doesn’t sound like the saaviest of ideas when it comes to landmarks in the Greater NYC Metropolitan Area. It’s more likely to sow fear, cause confusion and prompt unpleasant reminders for New Yorkers who don’t know it’s only an ad. Just as the aliens planned! And who revealed this? The Hollywood Reporter! For more, see this link
And if you happen to be in NYC and haven’t been scared silly by big white Vs in the sky,...

Dynamite Entertainment's forthcoming pirate comic book Blackbeard: Legend Of The Pyrate King will debut this October, the publisher has confirmed. Described as the firm's "most ambitious undertaking yet", the first issue will feature a cover by John Cassady and artwork from Mario Guevara. Writers Robert Place Napton and Jamie Nash have collaborated with Blair Witch Project duo Eduardo Sanchez and Gregg Hale to explore the legendary pirate's origin and legacy. "What's interesting about our story is it will dispel a lot of the pre-conceived notions people might have about Edward Teach, the man called 'Blackbeard'," said Napton. (more)...

Just in time for last minute gift buying, Dynamite Entertainment releases the second Lone Ranger trade paperback, Lines not Crossed, on Wednesday. The book collects issues 7-11 of the well regarded interpretation of the classic radio hero. The stories are from writer Brett Matthews with art by Sergio Cariello and covers from John Cassady.
