Aspiring writers, take note. During a trip to the local Barnes & Noble, Mark Carter picked up a book from the bargain bin. It was a satirical novel from 1996 written by David Prill and titled, "Serial Killer Days". Carter opened the book and immediately became glued to each page. The book had a rather odd premise about a town that celebrates the annual arrival of a serial killer, which includes a huge parade. He had to have the rights so he tracked Pill down in Minnesota. To...

The notion of a novel about a town celebrating the annual arrival of a serial killer with a parade and pageant is pretty hard to imagine-- but what if it happened in a movie, and a movie produced by a major Hollywood studio no less? The industry majors have been known to dabble in black comedy now and again, but Paramount's pick-up of the project Serial Killer Days seems like a major step even for the studio behind Thank You For Smoking. According to THR, the studio has brought Mark Carter in through a deal with producer Dan Dubiecki to write and possibly direct an adaptation of Serial Killer Days, the 1996 satirical novel by David Prill. Carter had this to say for his plans with the adaptation: .I hope to deliver the expected genre conventions but do it in an idiosyncratic, richly layered and unexpected world. There will also be...

It pains me to hear that it took nearly 7 years for Mark Carter to get this project off the ground, but it sounds like it may have been worth the wait. I hope you're ready for a horror celebration, 'cause I know I am! Carter, who had made an award-winning short called "The Ballad of Little Roger Mead," will be adapting David Prill's 1996 satirical novel SErIAL Killer Days, set in a town that celebrates the annual arrival of a serial killer with a parade and a pageant. The macabre sense of humor was very Charles Addams-ish, Carter recalls. Execs at Paramount have likened the tone to Scream and Disturbia. I hope to deliver the expected genre conventions but do it in an idiosyncratic, richly layered and unexpected world, says Carter. There will also be lots of blood. Color me every shade of excited.

There’s nothing quite like a quiet summer day, rocking back and forth on the front porch, watching the parade slowly pass by, waiting to see which one of your neighbors will end up brutally murdered. Mark Carter has been shopping around Serial Killer Days for a while now. In fact, it looked as though Jason Reitman was going to direct it back in 2008 after Juno came out, but he found his way to another project and another Best Picture nomination. However, a producer of both Thank You For Smoking and Up In The Air, Dan Dubiecki, is on board alongside Paramount to finally make the horror satire. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name which focuses on a town that has a serial killer at large that strikes on the same day every year. Of course, the town responds by throwing the murderer lavish parades, nominating...

It's taken him seven years, but short film director Mark Carter finally has a deal to adapt Serial Killer Days, a little-known 1996 satirical novel by David Prill. Maybe the book won't stay obscure for much longer. The story involves a town in Minnesota where an annual visit from a serial killer has become a tourist attraction, with a fair and a parade. A twenty-year tradition, the festival always results in a single murder, but the Standard Springs residents are fine with it because of the benefit to the economy. In the year the story is set, the pageant's "scream queen" is Debbie Sue, but she's concerned that she just doesn't feel the fear anymore...Carter's long-gestating script finally made the Black List of buzzy unproduced screenplays back in 2008, but he's just landed the project in cahoots with Dan Dubiecki, who produced the similarly irreverent Thank You For Smoking, as well...
