Washington - Former Us president Jimmy Carter was released from hospital Thursday afternoon after recovering from a stomach virus that sent him to emergency care earlier this week. The 85-year-old Carter was admitted to the MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, on Tuesday after falling ill on a flight to the city. Hospital spokeswoman Susan Christopher said he was discharged Thursday, having beaten back a gastric viral infection. Carter, who turns 86 on Friday, thanked hospital staff and the public for their good wishes during his two days in hospital and was to resume meetings in Washington later this week, Christopher said. Carter,...

Obviously the Drudge Report is a nightmare website. And we all know that, and we accept it for what it is. But sometimes… it is just so nightmare-ish and mean spirited that it surprises even me, a person who thinks Matt Drudge spends his spare time harassing billy goats gruff. So, there’s a lot going on today, right? It’s not even a traditional “slow news day.” Jimmy Carter is in the hospital; there was a shooting at the University of Texas. Things are happening. But the top story on the Drudge Report right now, as far as I can tell, is that one time somebody took an unflattering picture of Hillary Clinton. Let’s zoom in a little. “Noah, surely there is more to that story. The headline, ‘Demon Photo Moved On Wire’… that clearly means something and if you click on that link, I’m positive you...

Halo Reach is due tomorrow, the final installment, and it's got excellent reviews. So you too can attempt to recreate my feat. After a hard day's work, of course.

On Tuesday night, when President Obama spoke to the nation about the end of combat operations in Iraq, he did so from a freshly redecorated Oval Office, outfitted with snazzy, handmade striped wallpaper and a new oval rug adorned with quotes from F.D.R., Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, J.F.K., and Martin Luther King Jr. Obama isn’t the first president to give the iconic room—which dates to 1909, when William Taft remodeled the West Wing—a face-lift. Here, we’ve collected images of the office as it’s looked since Jimmy Carter’s presidency—click through and vote for your favorite design.

In an op-ed by former Us president Jimmy Carter and former Un secretary-general Kofi Annan last month, the two laid out a troubling view of the Millennium Development Goal number four: to reduce under-five child mortality by two-thirds by 2015 will not be possible.
The problem, as they see it, is in the diminishing funding of vaccination programs. Country-wide immunization campaigns provide trained personnel who deliver vaccinations, properly, to all children, while at the same time providing other benefits such as medicines, insecticide-treated bed-nets for malaria control, etc.
Despite some reassuring statistics, like a 78 percent decrease in polio and measles since 2000, the funding for measles control has dropped 75 percent since 2007, and over 30 African countries have had measles outbreaks over the past year.

Pity poor Gerald Ford. Though his presidency came at a crucial time in American history, he is often considered little more than a footnote — a go-between who bridged the gap between Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter in the 1970s. Ford found himself stumbling into the job, as he is the only man to ever hold the highest office of government in the United States without being elected as either President or Vice President. And on this day in 1974, Ford took the oath of office a day after Nixon resigned.
In his youth, Ford managed to extract himself from a broken home for a distinguished career in the Navy. He got into public office soon after his military tenure, scoring a seat in the House of Representatives. His career continued to build, and he eventually ascended to the title of House Minority Leader. It was there he ended up moving into...

Actress Daryl Hannah is urging U.S. President Barack Obama to go green and install solar panels on the roof of the White House.
The vegetarian Splash star has been a keen green activist for years, running her home on solar power and driving a car that runs on biodiesel.
And she's encouraging Obama to make changes to his residence in Washington D.C. after former American leader Ronald Reagan tore down the property's solar panels in the 1980s.
Hannah tells Britain's You magazine, "I’m pleased about the organic vegetable patch on the White House lawn, but Obama needs to put back the solar panels on the roof; Jimmy Carter put them up, Reagan took them down, and now it’s time they were reinstated.
"Reagan banned offshore drilling and Obama is trying to open it up again, which is terrible, especially given the recent oil spill. Then there’s nuclear power, endangered species…"...

Though the baby boomer stranglehold on the media would have you believe that it’s the 60s, a far stronger case could be made that the 1980s were, on the international stage, the most revolutionary decade in the half century following World War II. Despite the fact that this ten year span saw the fall of communism, the spread of the AIDS virus, and the riots in Tiananmen Square, there are depressingly few definitive texts on any of these topics, with all too many prominent historians preferring to focus on either the glory days of the greatest generation or the discontent and revolt of their children.
To this narrow landscape, Have You Heard from Johannesburg is an almost invaluable contribution, an expansive yet cohesive history on the struggle to end apartheid in South Africa. Though the last few years of the struggle (which finally culminated with the release of Nelson Mandela...

If you're a writer living in Maine, as I am, you'd have probably heard of W. Hodding Carter. He's Maine's answer to Aj Jacobs, the man who wrote The Year of Living Biblically and The Know-It-All: One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World. It's journalistic shtick, but it's interesting and often enlightening journalistic shtick. Basically, you do something all out for a year, write about it (preferably, on a blog), sign a lucrative book deal, and sell the rights to a movie studio. Boom! All that suffering was worth it, and you win at life. Elizabeth Gilbert did it with Eat, Pray, Love and Julie Powell did it with Julie & Julia. It's high-concept journalism. Find a compelling gimmick, make a fortune.
W. Hodding Carter -- whose dad was the Assistant Secretary of State under Jimmy Carter -- has made something of a career out of his peripatetic lifestyle.

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Saturday Night Live. From the time I was a toddler, I watched the show. In 5th grade, for a class project, I did a fake ad for "Jimmy Peanut Butter," impersonating Dan Aykroyd impersonating Jimmy Carter. If that wasn't enough to deem me the weird kid no one wanted to talk to, in my 8th grade talent show, a friend and I performed as The Festrunk Brothers ("Two wiiiild and crazy guys!"). By senior year of high school, it became clear that the yearbook staff had to create a "senior superlative" just for me. And, they did. Most Likely to Appear on Saturday Night Live. I never became ready to be a not-ready-for-prime-time player, so I chose the profession almost as goofy - political consultant....

The interviews, conducted by family friend Arthur M. The past haunts two former members of the Black Panther Party, in this soulful drama by writer/director Tanya Hamilton, in which the burden lies in the decision to either continue fighting the old fight, or just simply live and survive.
Set in a black Philadelphia neighborhood in 1976 (rendered in great detail by Hamilton who spent over a decade working on the film), around the time of the party’s decline, where tensions between the police and the residents still run high, Hamilton centers the story on Marcus (Anthony Mackie) returning for his father’s funeral, after a 4 year absence that was inspired by the community-wide belief that he sold out his Panther party partner to the Feds, which resulted in his death. And, of course, upon Marcus’ return, he finds himself instantly at odds with the neighborhood, including his Muslim sibling Bostic (The Roots frontman Tariq Trotter), bitter over his brother’s abandonment,...

1980 was an amazing time of ups and downs. Jimmy Carter was President, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back was released, John Bonham of Led Zeppelin died of alcohol poisoning, comedian Richard Pryor was badly burned trying to freebase cocaine, and Ulli Lommel's Blank Generation was unleashed on an unsuspecting populace.
Yes, that Ulli Lommel. Some 30 years ago he was honing his craft on Blank Generation, the story of Nada (Carole Bouquet), a beautiful French journalist on assignment in New York, who records the life and work of an up-and-coming punk rock star, Billy (portrayed by legendary punk pioneer Richard Hell). Soon she enters into a volatile relationship with him and must decide whether to continue with it or return to her lover, a fellow journalist trying to track down the elusive Andy Warhol.

Capitalism: A Love Story is typical Michael Moore fare: polarizing, manipulative, and an attempt to inspire people to get mad as hell and not take it anymore. Moore makes the film a lesson in presidential culpability, claiming that our current economic crisis is a direct result of Ronald Reagan's presidency, which blissfully shunned Jimmy Carter's pleas for a reduction in consumption. Reagan's sympathy for the rich was then aided later by the Clinton and Bush administrations' push for deregulation in banking, and now Obama is portrayed as the messiah who will make or break us as a nation.

Nearly 30 years of one of American television's most storied and beloved traditions (i.e. portraying our presidents as moronic simpletons whose inability to tie their own shoes could send the country to Defcon 3) came to a glorious fountain of awesomeness at Funnyordie.com.
The website premiered a new public service announcement on federal finance laws directed by Ron Howard in the form of a very funny "Presidential Reunion" sketch that features the likes of Will Ferrell, Darrell Hammond, Dana Carvey, Dan Aykroyd and even Chevy Chase reviving their classic impressions of former presidents including (respectively) George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George Bush Sr., Jimmy Carter and (the most hilarious in my opinion) Gerald Ford who come together to help the beleaguered Barack Obama, played by Fred Armisen. Jim Carrey also stepped in the room to play Ronald Reagan probably because Randy Quaid is nuttier than a Payday bar these days.

"Saturday Night Live" has a history of lampooning presidents that extends as far back as the sketch comedy show's beginnings. And just like any gathering of still-living real-life U.S. presidents causes a stir, so too does this new Funny Or Die video. Fred Armisen, as Barack Obama, worries over the stresses of leading the United States one evening before bed in the White House. So some of his pals show up with friendly advice: George W. Bush (Will Ferrell), Bill Clinton (Darrell Hammond), George Bush Sr. (Dana Carvey), Ronald Reagan (Jim Carrey), Jimmy Carter (Dan Aykroyd) and Gerald Ford (Chevy Chase). The whole thing was directed by Ron Howard.
One caveat: the video isn't actually all that funny. It's no doubt a thrill to see this crew assembled in one space, but it's too bad they forgot to bring the comedy along with them.

Funny or Die's Presidential Reunion from Will Ferrell Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Bush Sr. and Jr., and Bill Clinton stop by the Lincoln Bedroom to impart presidential wisdom to Barack Obama. The ersatz brainstorm is eventually interrupted by Clinton’s request to be appointed ambassador to Cancun and other comparably stereotypical behaviors from all involved. “Whaddya say we open up a bag of malaise potato chips?” Will Ferrell’s George W. Bush asks upon Jimmy Carter’s entrance.

One of the more popular viral videos that's beginning to spread around the web today features Ron Howard directing a skit for Funny or Die that features a whole bunch of comic actors (most of which are former or current SNL players) all decked out as different Presidents. Returning to the fold are folks like Will Ferrell (as George Bush Jr.), Chevy Chase (as Gerald Ford), Dana Carvey (as George Bush Sr.), Jim Carrey (replacing the late Phil Hartman with his best Ronald Reagan), Dan Aykroyd (as an extremely bloated Jimmy Carter), Darrell Hammond (as Bill Clinton), Fred Armison (as Barack Obama) and Maya Rudolph (as Michelle Obama).
Obviously, on paper, this sounds like the must-see video of the month, though it unfortunately lacks a whole lotta funny. Don't get me wrong, Will Ferrell will always crack me up with his ridiculous over-the-top Bush impersonation, and it was awesome to...

Ever wonder what would happen if Presidents Obama, Ford, Clinton, Carter, Reagan and both Bushes had a powwow? Well, Funny or Die is doing you one better! The satirical site has gathered the Saturday Night Live players, past and present, in a seriously funny call for financial reform in Washington, D.C. Jim Carrey's Ronald Reagan, Will Ferrell's George W. Bush, Darrell Hammond's Bill Clinton, Chevy Chase's Gerald Ford, Dan Aykroyd's Jimmy Carter and Dana Carvey's George H. W. Bush haunt Fred Armisen and Maya Rudolph as Barack and Michelle Obama, respectively. In the video directed by Ron Howard, they point fingers and blame each other for the country's current...

When Foreign Affairs wrote in its recent issue that in a worst case scenario, Barack Obama's foreign policy would end up looking like Jimmy Carter's, the former president was rightfully pissed. Who wants to be considered to a worst case scenario? But then Sean Hannity got a hold of the story and suddenly the narrative is "Carter Angered to Be Compared to Obama." Clever, but not quite right.

We know it's a bold claim with 21 seasons, but we're going to declare that four was our favorite season of The Simpsons. Maybe it's because season four was the first season that Conan O'Brien wrote for the show.
Maybe it's because season four contained one of our favorite episodes of all time, "Marge vs. the Monorail" (which was coincidentally written by Conan). Either way, you'll recognize and love plenty of the season four quotes.
Whether the fat boy in you still loves wearing your jacket from the famous "Mr. Plow" episode or you just love whacking snakes, you should appreciate The Simpsons quotes below:
Lisa: You're serving us gruel?
Dolph: Not quite. This is "Krusty Brand Imitation Gruel." Nine out on ten orphans can't tell the difference. | permalink Homer: Kids, let me tell you about another so-called wicked guy. He had long hair and some wild ideas. He didn't always...

When President Abraham Lincoln was shot at Ford's Theater in Washington, he was backed up by only a single bodyguard. When Winston Churchill walked from 10 Downing Street to the Parliament, he was accompanied by only a single police inspector. And the production notes to "The Ghost Writer" tell us also that when Tony Blair retired as Britain's prime minister, he was assigned 24 bodyguards who presumably will hover around him for life. I'm not sure how many protectors are assigned to Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter, but you can bet that the number is high. As for why this is important, one of the themes of this political thriller is the isolation that a chief executive feels after leaving office where he relies on his assistants for everything, though you'd be hard put to say that of Mr. Clinton or Mr. Carter.

Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American theatrical rights to "Countdown to Zero," Lucy Walker's documentary about the escalating nuclear arms race that debuted at Sundance. Magnolia will release the film in theaters this year.
History Channel picked up the U.S. TV broadcast rights.
"Countdown" was produced by Lawrence Bender and developed, financed and exec produced by Participant Media, together with World Security Institute. Jeff Skoll, Diane Weyermann, Bruce Blair and Matt Brown served as exec producers.
The film, which argues for nuclear disarmament, features such global figures as Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev, Pervez Musharraf and Tony Blair. Valerie Plame Wilson, who also appears in the film, introduced a clip from it last week at the annual Ted Conference in Long Beach. It also screened this month at Global Zero Summit in Paris.

Missouri native Candy Crowley, a veteran newswoman who has been with CNN since 1987, has been elevated to a prominent spot in the CNN lineup that includes Fareed Zakaria's Gps show in news analysis on Sunday morning. Crowley will replace John King for the network's Sunday morning political talk show. King has since been moved to primetime. The popular newsman will anchor the weekday evening news with hopes to turn around the numbers for CNN, which has suffered consistently for evening news ratings. Crowley will head up the hour-long show at 9 a.m. Et, and is repeated with updates three hours later. Crowley has been a fixture at national political conventions since the nomination of Jimmy Carter in 1976.

The Runaways were the original 'rock chicks', a wild all-girl teen band whose story is told in a film that opens today. Cherie Currie, the band's singer, tells us how it really was…
Cherie Currie was 15 when she started scandalising middle America. That was when she auditioned to become the lead singer of all-female teenage rock band the Runaways, a group that would send shockwaves through the suburbs with their attitude-fuelled performances and sexually explicit lyrics.
Their first single, "Cherry Bomb", talked unapologetically about "wild girls" and "street boys" and several radio stations refused to give it airtime. Currie would routinely appear on stage wearing stockings, suspenders and a tight-fitting basque so that even the reliably liberal Village Voice was moved to denounce the girls as "bimbos".
The year was 1976. Jimmy Carter was about to be elected president. It seemed America was not yet ready for five adolescent females who...

Santiago Calatrava's buildings marry engineering with biology. And they may just be beautiful enough to make Americans care about infrastructure.
Construction began last fall on the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge in Dallas (seen here in a rendering). It will be followed by another Calatrava span, part of a $2.2 billion project to reclaim the Trinity River banks and revitalize West Dallas.
Two decades ago, Tom Fisher, now dean of the University of Minnesota College of Design, visited Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava in Zurich, where he has a staff of 40 and a lakeside villa.

Listening last month to Election Day results from the all-news radio station (NYC’s Wcbs Am) as I lounged the evening away reading a book, I was suddenly reminded of my own minor brush with politics 35 years ago. We Never do politics or religion at Starlog (save for being pro-space, pro-literacy and anti-censorship), but recalling those times bemused me, so I’ve bothered to write them down here and make a Rare exception. Maybe you’ll be bemused, too.
Like all other freshmen bound that year for Bethany College, that “small college of distinction in the rolling hills of West Virginia” (as the College Bulletin described it), I had to choose a freshmen seminar for the fall. As a Post-Watergate budding journalist, I selected a course on politics that promised its students would actually Work in a campaign, namely that of its professor, Dr. Hiram Lester, who was running for State Senate.

Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn in a health clinic in Ouanaminthe, Haiti, October 2009. As President Obama and Congress work to overhaul American health care, Jimmy Carter is continuing his quest to fight diseases in some of the most neglected regions of the globe. Carter turned 85 in October; to celebrate, he flew to Hispaniola with his wife, Rosalynn, to check in on the Carter Center’s efforts to eliminate malaria in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. On the phone from his home in Plains, Georgia, Carter spoke with Vanity Fair recently about battling disease in countries plagued by strife, working together with the pharmaceutical industry, and what the American health care system could learn from his travels in places like Africa, Latin America, and South Asia. Austin Merrill: What’s your response to critics who say that eliminating malaria or other diseases is unrealistic, inefficient, and even irresponsible...

Fourteen years after the assassination of Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, President Bill Clinton returned to Israel to honor the late leader. During his visit, President Clinton urged Israelis and Palestinians to reach common ground, asking people in Israel to give Obama a chance. Between Hillary and Bubba, we've got one powerful diplomatic duo. Perpetual do-gooder and former president Jimmy Carter also traveled far from home recently—to the Mekong River to kick off a Habitat for Humanity campaign to build 166 homes in Cambodia, China, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. Joined by his wife, Rosalynn, the ex-president met volunteers in the town of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand to commence construction.

November 4, 2009; November 4, 2008. Getty Images. Forget C.C. Sabathia, Mark Texeira, Derek Jeter, and Alex Rodriguez’s post-‘roids revival. Want to know the real reason the Yankees broke through after a nine-year drought and won the World Series Wedensday night? Take a look at this list of the Yankees’ Series wins since 1960 and see if you can spot the underlying trend: 1961, 1962, 1977, 1978, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2009. Yes, that’s right: since the end of the Eisenhower era, the Yankees have only won championships when a Democrat was in the White House. There were two wins under John Kennedy, another two under Jimmy Carter, a whopping four under Bill Clinton, and now—after a dismal eight-years marked by preemptive war, regressive economic policies, and Red Sox victories—a fresh championship clinched a year to the day after Obama's election. Ironic then that George Steinbrenner was convicted of making illegal campaign contributions to Richard Nixon in 1972. One hopes...

A few weeks ago, Vf Daily’s Ex-presidents Watch reported on plans to turn former president Jimmy Carter’s childhood home in Plains, Georgia, into a national park. And this week, Congress is poised to expand the landmark by 30 acres to include the gas station once owned by Jimmy’s little brother, Billy Carter. Known for his elegant, redneck lifestyle, Billy hosted members of the national media at his gas station during Jimmy’s White House runs, in 1976 and 1980. No word yet on what they’ll be charging for a gallon. In more National Park news, President Bill Clinton’s childhood home in Hope, Arkansas—complete with Clinton’s childhood couch—will soon become part of the system, too.
