Blinded by the Light co-writer/director Gurinder Chadha knows firsthand what it feels like to be an outsider. Born in Kenya when the country was a British colony, she grew up part of the Indian/Asian diaspora who made their way from East Africa to London. Warner Bros. has nabbed global rights to “Western Stars,” the upcoming music documentary co-directed by Bruce Springsteen. The film will be released on the big screen and will open in theaters this fall after its world premiere at September’s Toronto International Film Festival.
“Western Stars” is Springsteen’s first studio album in five years and the film marks his directorial debut. It weaves in archival footage along with Springsteen’s narration, and shows him performing all 13 songs on the album, alongside a band and a full orchestra, in a nearly 100-year-old barn on the singer’s property.
The film was also overseen by Thom Zimny, a frequent Springsteen collaborator. Zimny directed the Boss in “Springsteen on Broadway” and “Bruce Springsteen: Hunter of Invisible Game” (2014), and picked up a Grammy Award for “Wings on Wheels: The Making of Born to Run” (2005).

Bruce Springsteen has kept an extremely low profile since wrapping up Springsteen on Broadway four months ago, but he reemerged Saturday night for a surprise two-song performance with Danny Clinch’s Tangiers Blues Band at the annual Kristen Ann Carr Benefit, which took place at New York’s Tribeca Grill. They played “Rockin’ Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu” and “Down the Road Apiece.”

Fans attending a free screening of “Springsteen on Broadway” at Monmouth University in West Long Branch Sunday night may not have noticed a familiar face in the audience: Bruce Springsteen.
According to the Asbury Park Press, Springsteen donned a red baseball cap and slipped in to view the film incognito. Springsteen arrived 10 minutes into the movie and took a seat in the back center section in the Pollak Theatre with director Thom Zimney and his co-manager, Barbara Carr.
Zimney was on hand to give a brief introduction to the movie.
The screening took place in the same theater where Springsteen held rehearsals for the Broadway show, which opened at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Oct. 3, 2017 and closed Dec. 15, 2018. The film is streaming on Netflix.
Springsteen has long been partial to the venue, having sat on that same stage for a Q&A promoting his book, “Born to Run.”

Bruce Springsteen’s career has been a “long and noisy prayer,” the Boss tells us in this new trailer for Springsteen On Broadway, and Netflix watchers can shout a big “Amen” come Dec. 16.
Springsteen On Broadway is, of course, the name of both the Netflix special and the stage show that’s been selling out in New York since opening last year at Jujamcyn’s Walter Kerr Theatre. The Broadway production closes Dec. 15, the day before Netflix launches the filmed version in more than 190 countries.
“This is what I’ve presented to you all these years as my long and noisy prayer, as my magic trick,” Springsteen says from the stage at the beginning of the trailer, “and like all good magic tricks it begins with a set-up.” From there, he speaks about the powerful influence of his father – “my hero and my greatest foe.”

On December 15, after 236 performances since October of last year, all at the Walter Kerr Theatre, the cast of “Springsteen on Broadway” — Bruce and, for two songs, singer/wife Patti Scialfa — will give their final performance. But the following night, fans can see the premiere of a Netflix special of the show, which was announced back in July. A trailer for the film arrived this morning, which you can watch below; an album of the show will be released on December 14.
In its preview-week review, Variety wrote, “Having reached virtually every mountaintop a rock star can, at 68 the workaholic singer-songwriter is embarking on another challenge, and the scripted nature and relatively rigid format of this four-month-long run are new disciplines for a man who famously switches up his setlists and speechifying on a nightly basis. ‘Springsteen On Broadway’ Album Release Set; Soundtrack To Netflix Special Will Include Story & Song
A two-cd Springsteen On Broadway soundtrack will be released Dec. 14, two days before the Netflix launch of a filmed performance of the sold-out Broadway show.
Springsteen has released a single from the soundtrack, “Land of Hope and Dreams,” on his YouTube site. Listen to the audio track above, and see the full track list below.
With lyrics including “Tomorrow there’ll be sunshine/And all this darkness past,” the song, as NPR noted today, is often performed by Springsteen at benefit concerts and political rallies, including 2012 campaign stops for then-presidential candidate Barack Obama. The release of “Land of Hope and Dreams” today comes four days before the mid-term elections.
The soundtrack to the Netflix special drops the day before the autobiographical Springsteen On Broadway closes its run at the Walter Kerr Theatre after what will be 236 performances. Previews began Oct. 3, 2017, with the official opening nine days later.

Entertainment One has taken U.K. and Australian rights on Gurinder Chadha’s new film, “Blinded by the Light,” a comedy drama inspired by rock legend Bruce Springsteen. Cornerstone Films has released a first-look image from the film (pictured), which began production last week, and will introduce it to international buyers at the Cannes Film Festival next month.
The film, described as a “hybrid musical” that weaves Springsteen’s music and lyrics into its narrative, stars newcomers Viveik Kalra and Nell Williams as its romantic leads, alongside Hayley Atwell and Rob Brydon in supporting roles. The movie grew out of a shared passion for Springsteen by Chadha, the director of “Bend It Like Beckham,” and British journalist Sarfraz Manzoor.

Shooting has begun, cast has been set and eOne has taken UK and Australia rights on Gurinder Chadha’s comedy/drama Blinded By The Light, a hybrid musical rooted in the British tradition of quirky comedies. This is the project that Deadline scooped Chadha was prepping with Cornerstone Films boarding international sales in Berlin. It’s based on the memoir Greetings From Bury Park by journalist/broadcaster Sarfraz Manzoor which chronicles his experiences as a British Muslim boy growing up in 1980s Luton and the impact Bruce Springsteen’s lyrics had upon him. And, evidently, The Boss is Ok with that.
Chadha and Manzoor developed the film out of their shared passion for Springsteen. They both met him at the London premiere of the Springsteen doc The Promise in 2010 and discovered he had not only read, but admired the book.

It’s been a couple months since the last edition of What’s Up Doc? placed Michael Moore’s surprise world premiere of Where To Invade Next at the top of this list and in the meantime much shuffling has taken place and much time has been spent on various new endeavors (namely my Buffalo-based film series, Cultivate Cinema Circle). Finally taking its rightful place at the top, D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hagedus’ Unlocking the Cage is in the midst of being scored by composer James Lavino, according to Lavino’s own personal site. Though the project has been taking shape at its own leisurely pace, I’d expect to see the film making its festival debut in early 2016.

If there's one subject that Steven Spielberg has proved he can do well over the years, it's war. Having directed such weighty and classic musings on it such as Schindler's List (1993) and Saving Private Ryan (1998) (both of which netted him Oscars), slightly more overlooked movies like Empire Of The Sun (1987) and even the, shall we say, interesting project that was 1941 (1979), it would be fair to say that he knows the genre pretty well. Oh, and he also executive produced the critically lauded television miniseries Band Of Brothers (2001), and that's just counting the terrestrial conflicts.
With his latest film War Horse, however, based on the moving and poignant children's book by Michael Morpurgo originally published in 1982, he is not looking at the First World War in terms of the many young soldiers who were pulled into the so called 'war to end all wars' but is instead focusing on the equine army,...

From Mother Nature Network's Gerri Miller:
According to "War Horse" director Steven Spielberg, "Four million horses were killed in World War I and not just from shelling or gunfire, but from malnutrition and exposure." Spielberg depicts that brutal reality in his new film, but despite the harrowing situations they face, the equine heroes of Spielberg's latest epic were not harmed in any way making the movie. Extra care was taken in a climactic sequence in which a horse is caught up in barbed wire in No Man's Land. "It took much longer to shoot that scene because we had to make sure every single shot was safe for the horse." The barbed wire was actually "Styrofoam rubber painted silver," he adds.
