Directors often talk about wanting to create the illusion of reality in their works -- and if that's what independent filmmaker Fred Carpenter was aiming for, then the fact that real-life cops nearly gunned down his actors indicates he achieved his goal.
The frightening story comes courtesy of The New York Daily News. Carpenter and a small film crew were shooting a convenience store robbery scene for his new film, Jesse, when Long Island police arrived on the scene. Thinking what they were witnessing was a genuine crime, officers entered the store with guns drawn and subdued the actor playing the robber with force. Luckily, no one was shot.
Vincent Garcia, a spokesman for the police force, said there were no outward signs that it was a film shoot -- Carpenter was filming with a small HD camera and wasn't using elaborate lighting set-ups or any of the technical equipment...

A movie actor playing a robber in New York was almost shot by police on Tuesday after he was mistaken for a real-life criminal.
Independent film director Fred Carpenter was shooting detective drama Jesse in Long Island when Nassau County police were called to investigate a convenience store hold-up.
According to Police Detective Mike Bitsko, authorities found Mike Tattoo pointing a gun at a clerk and disarmed him before learning he was just acting, reports the New York Post.
No further action was taken.

Burning Inside, the second feature film by West Haven, Ct filmmaker Nathan Wrann, will be making its world premiere at the Connecticut Film Festival on May 8. The film is a tense thriller about a man who wakes up from a coma to begin a new life only to be plagued by vague, violent memories of his past. Or, are they just evil hallucinations? Either way, “John Doe” is out for revenge.
Following this film festival screening, Burning Inside will be released on DVD on May 11 by the brand new distributor Channel Midnight Releasing, which was created by filmmaker James Felix McKenney and producers Lisa Wisely and Chase Tyler. (And, yes, the title of the film comes from the song by Ministry.)
