[[tmz:video id="0_3rsdrywt"]] Roy Halladay was honored by teammates, family and friends at a memorial service in Florida on Tuesday ... remembering the star pitcher for his accomplishments both on and off the field. Halladay's wife, Brandy, was the last to speak ... reminiscing about...

Major League Baseball has lost a beloved icon and the sports world is in mourning over the untimely death of legendary pitcher Roy "Doc" Halladay.
The celebrated athlete died Tuesday after he crashed his plane into the Gulf of Mexico near Holiday, Florida.
Following the news of the tragedy, nearly everyone who had ever played alongside the pitcher -- or against him -- took to social media to share their memories, post tributes, and send condolences to Halladay's widow, Brandy, and their two sons, Ryan and Braden.
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter -- one of Halladay's former teammates when they both played for the Toronto Blue Jays and a close friend -- released a statement on his passing.
"We grew up together. Went through good and bad times together. He was an amazing pitcher, competitor, teammate and friend," Carpenter shared. "I have so many memories with him and his family. I will miss him...

Gravitas has debuted the trailer for an indie titled Amanda & Jack Go Glamping, which is playing at the Austin Film Festival this month. For those who don't know, the word "glamping" is an amalgamation of "glamorous camping", essentially describing luxurious camping in which you go stay in fancy places - in this case, a "yurt". David Arquette and Amy Acker stars as a married couple who decided to go "glamping" in hopes of reigniting their spark for each other. Of course, things get weird and crazy, and yeah you know how these films go. This also stars Adan Canto, Nicole Elliott, Daniel Ross Owens, Chris Carpenter, Gustavo Gomez, and June Squibb. It's not really my kind of indie comedy, but it might be up your alley. Here's the full trailer (+ poster) for Brandon Dickerson's Amanda & Jack Go Glamping, on YouTube: With their marriage on the rocks, Jack (Arquette) and...

How can you not be romantic about baseball?
- Brad Pitt as Billy Beane in Moneyball (2010)
Unlike most other team sports, baseball is a game of individual achievements that culminate in a team’s efforts to win. Each batter stands alone at the plate, facing a pitcher who opposes him. Each defender on the field must make a play alone, or in conjunction with another defender. The cumulative efforts of each individual results in a team win or a team loss.
That is one reason why baseball has had such a strong hold on successive generations. It’s easy to imagine oneself as Babe Ruth hitting a called home run, or Don Larsen throwing a perfect game, or last year’s hero David Freese improbably winning Game Six of the World Series. These incredible moments come from one man stepping up at the right moment and delivering magic. Anyone who...

First let's get one thing out of the way: Fringe got totally hosed by the weather gods back on Wednesday, October 26. That's the day rain postponed Game 6 of the World Series, pushing the series back and pre-empting Fringe on Friday, October 28 after the heroics of David Freese forced a Game 7. As a result the show's typical fall finale will now bat lead-off for the series once January 2012 rolls around. It also means we're left with "Wallflower" as our substitute fall finale, and that's probably like having Chris Carpenter pinch hit for Albert Pujols. For you non-baseball fans out... More >>...

Though Game 7s should be, by definition, the most dramatic games in sports, Game 6s have a better reputation for classic World Series games. The ball dribbled through Bill Buckner’s legs in a Game 6. Carlton Fisk waved his home run fair in a Game 6. Kirby Puckett hit his walk-off home run in a Game 6. Last night, St. Louis Cardinal David Freese, who hit only 10 home runs during the season, saved his team’s season with a two-strike, two-out triple in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the score and then hit a solo home run in the...

Still not sure who to root for in this Rangers/Cardinals World Series, even 5 games into it? Looking for some random amusing non-baseball tidbit to tip your fickle allegiance one way or the other? Well, now you’re in luck! Here’s Texas Rangers pitcher Derek Holland — fresh off nearly throwing a shutout in Game 4 — strapping on a headset during Game 5 and giving his best Harry Caray impression, doing 30 seconds of impromptu play-by-play and adding a rare moment of pop culture inspiration and whimsy to a series that badly needed some: He even threw in a bonus Schwarzenegger impression before the commercial. The ball is in your court, St. Louis, and you’re running out of games. How’s Chris Carpenter’s Peter Falk?...

The trailers are starting to make the rounds for the digested, regurgitated and over-incubated adaptation of Michael Lewis' best-selling baseball novel, Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game. Brad Pitt pushed for a film version of the novel, which highlights the change in direction of the Oakland Athletics under General Manager Billy Beane. The San Francisco Bay Area franchise was one of the highest spending clubs in the early parts of the 90s, but after owner Walter Haas died in 1995, the new ownership group slashed payroll and cut operating costs (apparently this sort of behavior isn't limited to the New York Knights or Charlie Sheen's Cleveland Indians).
Beane's strategies expanded upon statistical analysis with objective studies and regressions analysis and all sorts of mathematical approaches, embracing the field of "Sabermetrics". By developing a different idea about how baseball games were won, and a different idea about which...

Baseball is a gentleman's game, full of long, languid moments with periods of manic energy lumped in between. It's an easy-going sport with no clock and a lot of poetic, philosophical moments. But occasionally, tempers flair up and a good old-fashioned donnybrook breaks out. Such was the case in the game between the Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals in Cincinnati on Tuesday (August 10). On Monday night, Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips openly said some negative things about the Cardinals, which Cards catcher Yadier Molina apparently took really seriously. So when Phillips came up to bat in the bottom of the first inning, Molina said something to him that quickly escalated into a shout-off and the clearing of both benches.
Everything looked calm and collected for a while, until somebody threw a punch and ignited a brawl (the center of which was Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter and Reds hurler...
