Big Machine Records and Surfdog Records have announced a reimagining of the late Glenn Campbell’s 2011 album, Ghost on the Canvas, out on April 19th.
Titled Glen Campbell Duets – Ghost on the Canvas Sessions, the star-studded project pairs the Rhinestone Cowboy’s original vocals with newly recorded contributions from the likes of Brian Wilson, Carole King, Dolly Parton, Elton John, and Dave Stewart. Also featured on the album are Hope Sandoval, Linda Perry, Sting, Brian Setzer, Daryl Hall, Eric Church, and Eric Clapton. Pre-orders are ongoing.
As a preview of the record, you can hear the reworkings of “Hold on Hope” with Church and “Nothing But the Whole Wide World” with Clapton below.

The tagline for The Asylum’s latest film Monster Armageddon reads “Welcome to the Multiverse”. But the film actually has less in common with Marvel or DC’s concept of shared universes than it does with Toho’s monster mashes like Destroy All Monsters and Godzilla Final Wars.
As the film opens an unidentified object heading toward Earth takes out the Iss. At the same time a US Navy ship under the command of Ltc Madoyln Webb is attacked and sunk by a giant, one might even say mega, piranha. Could there be a connection? Of course, there is.

Well, we're done. Another Oscar ceremony ends, and with it, another awards season and another year of Tech Support here at In Contention. On the whole, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" came out the big winner, taking four of the 10 crafts categories. "Whiplash" came up with two more while "Birdman," "Interstellar," "Selma" and "American Sniper" got in on the love-sharing with one apiece. Crafts category shut-outs for "Mr. Turner," "Unbroken" and "The Imitation Game," despite their impressive nomination counts, were unsurprising. It was also a year of repeat victors. Winners in Best Cinematography, Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound Editing and Visual Effects had all won previously. There was one big first-timer, though, in Alexandre Desplat – more on him in a moment. Others are still waiting for their first wins, alas. Cinematographer Roger Deakins, songwriter Diane Warren and sound mixer Frank Montaño immediately jump to mind. Emmanuel Lubezki's triumph in...

Over the past three and a half months, we have previewed the races in all Oscar categories and spoken with many of the leading contenders. For the ninth year here at Tech Support, it's now time to put all of that aside and put forward final predictions. Which craftsmen and craftswomen will be cited by their peers on Thursday? Best Cinematography Emmanuel Lubezki looks in fantastic position to earn his second straight statuette for his very, very long takes on "Bidman." Robert Yeoman and Dick Pope have earned guild, Bfca and BAFTA nods for their gorgeous period work that blurred the line between camera work and the painted and crafted arts on "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Mr. Turner" respectively. The former will likely rack up a host of nods while this is a perfect chance to recognize Pope’s collaborations with Leigh. They’re in good shape. Roger Deakins missed a BAFTA nod,...

Continuing its romp through the critics kudos this awards season, Fox Searchlight’s Birdman drew a whopping 13 nominations from the Broadcast Film Critics Association’s 20th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards. In fact it’s a big day for Fox in general as Searchlight’s March release, The Grand Budapest Hotel was remembered to the tune of 11 nominations, while big Fox scored 6 nominations with Gone Girl. All three compete for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay and significant acting nods. This is a big boost in particular for Budapest, coming on the heels of its SAG nod for Outstanding Cast as well as four key Golden Globe nominations. Usually films opening as early as March are largely forgotten when it comes to Best Picture attention, but Budapest could be a rare exception in recent years if this triumph for the Wes Anderson comedy is repeated at the Oscars. The last film that opened as early as March,...

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice debuted amid much anticipation and easily grossed the weekend’s highest per-theater averages among all limited-release titles. But that didn’t mean it could match the stratospheric numbers of The Imitation Game, Birdman or The Grand Budapest Hotel, which had the year’s biggest opening weekends.
In fact, Vice didn’t even match the PTAs of P.T.A.’s previous three films, though word of mouth may give it a great high before its theatrical run is done. Among returning films, Wild covered a lot more ground in a sizable expansion that paid off with solid box office results, as did The Imitation Game, which continues to expand and thrive. And Birdman has soared past $20M in its 9th weekend, goosed by strong showings in several year-end critics polls.
Warner Bros. opened Vice in five New York and Los Angeles theaters Friday, grossing $330K.

“And it’s knowing I’m not shackled by forgotten words and bonds
and the ink stains that have dried upon some line, that keeps you in the backroads
by the rivers of my memory, that keeps you ever gentle on my mind.”
In 2011, legendary singer, songwriter and guitarist Glen Campbell was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. When he and his family made the brave decision to go public and raise awareness for the disease that affects nearly 5 million people in the Us alone, Campbell turned to the treatment he knew best: performing his music. What followed was a year-long farewell tour that director James Keach decided to document in the just released Glen Campbell: I’LL Be Me, much to the delight of Glen’s fans all over the world.

The 17th annual Savannah Film Festival kicks off on Saturday and runs through Nov. 1 — and, starting this year, its organizers want you to think of it as a major player in the awards season, generally, and specifically the fest for best documentary feature Oscar contenders, much like people associate the Palm Springs International Film Festival with best foreign language film Oscar contenders.
To that end, the fest is introducing a “Docs to Watch” sidebar, as part of which it will screen nine top docs: Pulitzer Prize winner Jose Antonio Vargas‘ Documented (CNN Films), John Maloof and Charlie Siskel‘s Finding Vivian Mayer (Sundance Selects), Alan Hicks‘ Keep on Keepin’ On (RADiUS-twc), Oscar nominee Steve James‘ Life Itself (Magnolia), James Keach‘s Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me (Area 23a), Oscar nominee Robert Kenner‘s Merchants of Doubt (Sony Classics), Gabe Polsky‘s Red Army...

It’s white-knuckle time for the Napa Valley Film Festival’s organizers, filmmakers and fans, with a key venue and two hotels still fixing earthquake damage ahead of the Nov. 12 opening night. The post-quake craziness comes just as the four-year-old event is getting traction in Hollywood for its Oscar Season-adjacent timing, with companies setting encore screenings and star appearances, to tout awards contenders from earlier in the year.
The festival bills itself a mix of film, food and, of course, wine, with its own wine director pouring bottles from 150 of the region’s best-regarded vineyards. A recent Los Angeles event spotlighting the festival featured The Weinstein Co. President David Glasser, who said his company will use it to push awareness of several TWC awards contenders. Among those projects: The Imitation Game, with festival appearances scheduled for director Morten Tyldum and cast members for the biopic about martyred cryptography pioneer Alan Turing.

If there was any doubt awards season was in full swing, this week’s growing list of screening events featuring lunches, dinners and receptions all aimed at luring Academy and Golden Globe voters should erase any question.
As I pointed out last week, the Academy’s “official” foreign-language screenings began on Monday night with Poland’s Ida and Hungary’s demanding but very fine White God. But that is just the beginning for both those films.
On Friday afternoon at Century City’s Craft restaurant, a private luncheon was held that drew several Oscar voters for an intimate opportunity to chow down with Ida director Pawel Pawlikowski.
White God’s filmmakers come into town next week for similar treatment with a private screening and reception aimed at those same voters. Saturday night, the terrific Swedish entry, Force Majeure, had a packed Beverly Hills screening followed by a Bouchon dinner reception...

2014 has featured an impressive number of deeply moving and inspirational documentaries. There’s been Life Itself, Steve James‘ remembrance of the dearly departed film critic Roger Ebert; Keep on Keepin’ On, Alex Hicks‘ chronicle of an old man and a young man helping one another; Documented, Jose Antonio Vargas‘ portrait of the undocumented immigrant experience in 21st century America; Ben Cotner and Ryan White‘s The Case Against 8, which takes one into the center of the gay marriage debate; and the list goes on. But, in terms of sheer tears-inducement, I’m not sure any can match James Keach‘s Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me, a gut-punching look at what Alzheimer’s Disease has done to the titular music legend — and the remarkable way in which the 78-year-old and his loved ones have conducted their lives since his diagnosis in 2011.

Today's new ratings are kicked off with the prequel to The Conjuring, Annabelle, scoring an R-rating, just as the first film did. We also have "R" ratings for the upcoming doc Keep On Keepin' On and Jason Reitman's Men, Women & Children, which I saw here in Toronto on Saturday (read my review). Two more Toronto titles are in today's bulletin, the first is a "PG-13" for the excellent The Imitation Game (read my review), which has a hysterical "historical smoking" reason, and the other is an amended rating reason for Nightcrawler. The original "R" rating for Nightcrawler as for violence, bloody images, and language. That has now changed to being for "violence including graphic images, and for language". Check out the complete bulletin below. After The Fall Rated R For language and some sexual content. Against The Sun Rated PG For thematic material involving peril and hardships, and For language.

The trailer for upcoming documentary Glen Campbell I’LL Be Me has finally been released and it doesn’t disappoint. This is a must-see for any Glen Campbell fan, as it humorously and heartbreakingly follows the Rhinestone Cowboy on his final concert tour after being diagnosed with advanced alzheimers disease.
I was fortunate enough to see this film at the Topanga Film Festival and there was not a dry eye in the house. To see fans rally around this man who has given so much of his talent and musical genius for so many years is beautifully moving.
Set for an Oct. 24, 2014 release date (opens in theaters in New York and Nashville on October 24, followed by a nationwide release to more than 50 cities,) I wouldn’t be surprised if I’LL Be Me quietly picks up a documentary feature nomination come Oscar time.

After moving her husband Glen Campbell into a full-time care facility in April, Kim Woolen faced criticism from the public, to say nothing of the singer's eldest daughter, Debby. Now, the star's wife of 32 years is defending her actions, saying she was told by doctors the move was "the best thing for Glen," who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2011. In a statement to the Associated Press, Woolen, 55, explained that she had a team of six people caring for the "Rhinestone Cowboy" singer, 78, around the clock at home, but Campbell's current doctor advised her in February about the need for 24-hour access to medical care.

More than three years into his battle with Alzheimer's, Glen Campbell can no longer do what's been second nature for him for most of his life - perform. When asked if the country great would ever play for an audience again, his wife, Kim Woolen, 55, says it's unlikely. "He can't even tune a guitar now. If I tune one and hand it to him he can still play, [but] not like he used to," Woolen told People at the Open Hearts Foundation's 4th Annual Gala in Malibu on Saturday. However, he can still "play a couple licks here and there, and he finds joy in that.

An honorable mention went to "The Ballad of Shovels and Rope," about the folk duo, which also won the Ground Zero Tennessee Spirit Award for Best Feature. The Grand Jury Prize winner of the Bridgestone Narrative Competition was Mexican director Fernando Eimbcke's "Club Sandwich," the bittersweet tale of a young single mother and her teenage son dealing with his coming of age. "Little Brother" earned an honorable mention. In the Documentary Competition, the Grand Jury Prize went to "Besa: The Promise," about Nazi-occupied Albania and the protection of the Jews by the mostly Muslim population. After a constant juggling of shifts to keep an eye on Glen Campbell around the clock, his family made the decision to move him into a memory care facility in Nashville. The transition, they tell People, was in the best interest of the "Rhinestone Cowboy" singer, who has been living with Alzheimer's for over three years. "There were five of us taking care of him and we were all completely exhausted," Campbell's fourth wife, Kim Woolen, who stars in the documentary Glen Campbell ... I'll Be Me, which follows the family as they deal with different stages of the disease, tells People.

Often, an artist can feel like he’s stumbling around while making an album. Then he’ll find just the right song that brings all the pieces of the puzzle together. So it was for David Nail with “Whatever She’s Got.” The lead single from the country singer's third album, “I’m A Fire,” which came out Tuesday, soared to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Airplay chart, but Nail knew it was a winner long before it hit the top spot. “If we hadn’t had ‘Whatever She’s Got’ in our bag, we might still be searching for songs and still in the process of making that record,” he says. “When that song came into the picture, I think it gave everyone involved a bit of excitement, a bit of a kick in the butt. People said, ‘This is the song you’re been missing.’ I think...

CBS was the big winner at the News and Documentary Emmy Awards ceremony last night, bagging 12 statuettes — more than CNN (3), NBC (2), and ABC (1) combined. PBS was CBS’ closest competition with 9 Emmys, followed by HBO’s 6. Sunday newsmag 60 Minutes scored half of CBS’ statuettes. CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley won 3 Emmys last night, the total wins for CBS Sunday Morning is 3 and it shared an award with CBS This Morning. (An earlier academy tally had incorrectly placed one of the newscast’s wins in the CBS Sunday Morning column). CBS’ award-winning reports covered a wide range of topics, from Seal Team 6 to congressional lobbying to Glen Campbell’s farewell tour, to the front lines of Syria’s civil war. Frontline accounted for 7 of PBS’ Emmys — a tally that does not include this year’s lifetime achievement award to Frontline founder/Ep David Fanning. American Experience and Nature also contributed to PBS’ tally.

'My mother would listen to the Carpenters while ironing'
Of the handful of albums my parents owned, it was The Carpenters' Singles 1969-1973 that struck me the most. I remember being particularly fascinated by Rainy Days and Mondays. My mother would listen to the Carpenters in the afternoon, while doing the ironing in the front room, and I remember thinking that was what the woman in the song was probably doing too. Well, that was a mediocre night of brooding dudes. Remember when I told last night's ladies to "matter more"? Turns out the gents needed the same memo, with one notable exception: The fabulous, high-heeled mess known as J'da, who announced he was "representing the gays" after his eye-popping, nutty, floor-clutching performance of "Rumour Has It," rocked me, confused me, and ultimately felt... too insane for this universe. We'll get to that in a bit. J'da's performance, I mean, not the universe where he can live and thrive. That's a couple millennia off.
