Back in October 2019, before the pandemic, we brought you news about American Civil War movie Freedom’s Path.
The feature, which charts the friendship between a Union soldier and a runaway slave who is helping facilitate the Underground Railroad, stars Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting), Rj Cyler (Me And Earl And The Dying Girl) and Gerran Howell (Catch 22). Post-production has just wrapped.
As it turned out, the project would mark the final stops on the journey of two veteran actors who died while the movie was in post-production: Thomas Jefferson Byrd, a frequent Spike Lee collaborator, and New Orleans native Carol Sutton, both of whom had supporting roles.
Both actors died in sad circumstances. Tony-nominee Byrd was murdered in Atlanta and Sutton died of complications from Covid.
Today, the production has chosen to release two images of the admired actors in their final film, marking the first official stills from the movie.

The Independent Spirit Award nominations were announced on January 26 and included a windfall for the cast of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” — not just leads Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman, but also supporting actors Colman Domingo and Glynn Turman. Is this a sign that we’re underestimating the film’s supporting cast at the Oscars?

After months of anticipation and mounting Oscar buzz, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” just received a December 18 release date on Netflix. The film, an adaptation of Pulitzer Prize-winner August Wilson’s play of the same name, reunites both producer Denzel Washington and actress Viola Davis with the estimable playwright’s work after they both starred in “Fences” on Broadway and in the Oscar-winning film. Chadwick Boseman co-stars with Davis in what is, sadly, his final role. Kyle Buchanan (New York Times) writes of Boseman’s performance, “Shot through with movie-star charisma and practically assured of Oscar recognition, it is Boseman’s finest screen performance.”
Davis steps into the shoes of real-life blues singer Ma Rainey in the film, which is set in Chicago in 1927 and chronicles a recording session beset with delays, generational tensions amongst the band, and pressure from white record executives. Boseman plays Ma Rainey’s trumpet player Levee,...

The respected filmmaker hitting Kickstarter for help phenomenon seems to have died down over the last year or so but along with Zach Braff, Spike Lee was certainly one of the highlights of this short-lived trend. Shaking the virtual tip jar towards a great many people, myself included, he managed to get together a budget of just under $1.5 million, including a $10,000 donation from Steven Soderbergh and so presents us with Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, a somewhat surprise remake of 70’s indie flick Ganja & Hess. Even with my meagre donation, I think it was $10, it’s sad to say that I feel ripped off and I suspect most will.

Here is first trailer for Spike Lee’s new film Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, which he made after he raised $1.5 million on Kickstarter. Lee is a director that is hit or miss with me. He’s made some great films and some crappy ones. This new one definitely looks intriguing as it follows the story of a man who is addicted to blood.
The movie stars Stephen Tyrone Williams, Zaraah Abrahams, Rami Malek, Elvis Nolasco, Thomas Jefferson Byrd, Joie Lee, Felicia “Snoop” Pearson, and Jeni Perillo.
Spike Lee’s new stylized thriller Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus is a new kind of love story. Dr. Hess Green (Williams) becomes cursed by a mysterious ancient Afrian artifact and is overwhelmed with a newfound thirst for blood. He however is not a vampire. Soon after his transformation he enters into a dangerous romance with Ganja Hightower (Abrahams) that questions the very nature of love,...

Remember my Moonrise Kingdom review earlier this summer, in which I confessed that I'd tweeted the fatuous "oh yes oh Wes oh yes yes yes" after seeing the movie?
Oh, Spike Lee. Oh, no. No (sigh).
Red Hook Summer, Lee's latest feature film, disappointed me greatly. To compare it to my reaction to Moonrise Kingdom causes me to worry that I am a privileged hipster elitist who favors the precious over the real. I'm not going to dwell on whether that's accurate and to what degree, but I firmly believe that even if that's true, it's not why I couldn't engage with Red Hook Summer. Lee's movie about teenagers coming of age has structural problems, clunky performances and an excess of speechifying. As someone who is a great fan of Lee's New Orleans documentaries and several of his features, it is a letdown.

Chicago – “I ain’t pawning my responsibility off as a parent and saying she’s in God’s hands.” What a powerful line. The idea that religion has been used as a crutch, an excuse for communities who preach that God will save their young ones when they need to do their part is a passionate and powerful one. And we all know that Spike Lee does his best work when he’s inspired by powerful ideas. “Red Hook Summer,” the controversial director’s controversial latest features Lee playing with fascinating concepts and working well with setting even if the final result isn’t quite the sum of its parts.

Summer Bummer: Lee Offers Strong Ending for the Devoted
With his first fictional film since 2008’s Miracle at St. Anna, the ever divisive Spike Lee returns with a film he himself personally financed, Red Hook Summer. While it does bear labor of love earmarks, this personal tale that touches on the gentrification of Brooklyn, unfortunately takes an awfully long time to find its voice. With a running time of 130 minutes, the first 90 feel like Lee wants to punish the viewer with a mixture of painfully wooden child actors, and worse, with plenty of unnecessary and wearying church sermons. If you’ve not been to the “good house” for a while, you might feel like you’ve been held hostage to the word by Spike Lee. But if you’ve the patience, Lee has a rewarding payoff in store for you in the film’s final fourth that lessens the load...

In case you haven't noticed, Spike Lee has been making the publicity rounds for his latest feature, "Red Hook Summer," which opened on Friday and took in $42,100 on four screens over the weekend. That may not sound like a lot, but it's decent business for a film with no special effects, no recognizable characters and no big-name stars. And did I mention that it's set in the projects, but doesn't use them to terrify the audience into double-locking their doors to keep the bad guys away? The Red Hook Projects, as seen in their namesake film, are a place of danger, yes, but also real beauty. It's a community of mostly poor people, struggling to find their way just like the rest of us.
The main attraction, then, is Spike. And the fact that he's going back to Brooklyn, to continue the saga he began with "She's Gotta Have It...

Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing, 25th Hour) returns next month with Red Hook Summer, his first feature since 2008’s Miracle at St. Anna. The first trailer landed last month, and now Variance Films have released ten new images from the film.
Written and directed by Lee, the film stars newcomer Jules Brown as Flik Royale, alongside Clarke Peters (The Wire), Nate Parker (Red Tails), Toni Lysaith, James Ransone (How to Make it in America), and Thomas Jefferson Byrd (Bamboozled).
“The latest in Spike Lee’s Chronicles of Brooklyn anthology–which also includes “She’s Gotta Have It” (1986), “Do The Right Thing” (1989), “Crooklyn” (1994), “Clockers” (1995), and “He Got Game” (1998)–Red Hook Summer tells the story of Flik Royale (Jules Brown), a sullen young boy from middle-class Atlanta who has come to spend the summer with his deeply religious grandfather, Bishop Enoch Rouse (Clarke Peters), in the housing projects of Red Hook.

It's red and it pops with color. It's the new poster for Spike Lee's upcoming drama, the 6th or 7th (depending on who's counting) installment of his chronicles of Brooklyn series, "Red Hook Summer."
Starring Clarke Peters, Nate Parker, Jules Brown, Thomas Jefferson Byrd, Toni Lysaith, James Ransone, De'Adre Azia and many more, "Red Hook Summer" tells the story of Flik Royale (Brown), a sullen young boy from middle-class Atlanta who has come to spend the summer with his deeply religious grandfather, Bishop Enoch Rouse (Peters), in the housing projects of Red Hook. Having never met before, things quickly get off on the wrong foot as Bishop Enoch relentlessly attempts to convert Flik into a follower of Jesus Christ. Between his grandfather’s constant preaching and the culture shock of inner-city life, Flik’s summer appears to be a total disaster--until he meets Chazz Morningstar (Lysaith), a pretty girl his age,...

Park City, Utah — The old refrain of "more money, more problems" seems to apply to Spike Lee's "Red Hook Summer," the director's new drama he unveiled at the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday.
During a Q&A session following the screening of the filmmaker's religion-focused feature, actor and comedian Chris Rock (at Sundance for his new film "2 Days in New York" from Julie Delpy) asked Lee if he would have done anything differently had he "actually gotten... studio money" for the film. Lee's response was a fiery one, fueled with comments that condemned the Hollywood studio system for knowing "nothing about black people."

When Spike Lee threw a small fit last night during his Q&A after the premiere of Red Hook Summer, is it because he was angry at Hollywood — or because he sensed that the audience didn’t really like his movie, and he was working off his disappointment by finding a big bad target to hit? My own feeling is that if the film had been better, he might not have been reduced to griping about the movies the Man won’t let him make. For Red Hook Summer isn’t just a letdown. It’s a bit of an ordeal.

The Sundance Film Festival, which kicks off this weekend, has been known to launch the careers of many a rising talent. The Festival has changed over the decades from a low-profile venue for small-budget, independent creators outside the Hollywood system to a now media extravaganza for the Hollywood industry. One thing that hasn’t changed is the number of great movies which premiere each and every year. This year has one of the best line-ups in recent memory. From niche horror to promising indie debuts, the festival is screening 110 feature-length films from 31 countries, so I’ve decided to narrow it down for everyone. Here are the movies you should keep an eye out for this year.

Just about every film at Sundance is a world premiere. So why is there a "Premieres" section, and how is it different than the Competition or the Spotlight or the New Frontiers or the Next or...okay, I think that's all of them. Sundance describes Premieres as "a showcase of some of the most highly anticipated dramatic films of the coming year from new and established directors" and Documentary Premieres as "about big subjects or by master filmmakers that showcase the power of the form."
Basically, what it really means is here's where you find the attention-grabbers at Sundance. These are the big honking movies, the movies featuring Hollywood directors and talent coming down from their Valhalla of craft services and video village to get their hands dirty with the independents. These are the movies that have the biggest red carpets and the majority of the press coverage (see this post).

The Sundance Film Festival (apart from Venice) remains the only major film festival that we have not yet had a chance to fully cover. Hopefully 2012 will change that situation. It is one of our goals for next year and so you should be seeing a lot of Sundance posts for the next two or so months.
Sundance has just announced their Feature and Documentary Premieres for next months line-up and it of course includes notable stand-outs including Spike Lee‘s latest Red Hook Summer, Stephen Frears‘ Lay the Favourite, Josh Radnor‘s sophomore effort, Liberal Arts with Elizabeth Olson and Joe Berlinger‘s latest documentary on Paul Simon. In other words, if you are lucky enough to attend the festival, now is the time to get even more excited.

If Spike Lee's first feature film in four years (alliteration! and not counting the many documentaries he's done in that time) isn't enough to get you excited for Sundance, then we just don't know what to tell you. Lee will take "Red Hook Summer" to Park City, and no, it's not a sequel to "Do The Right Thing" as rumored. Instead, the mysterious project has been revealed to be centering around a young boy from Atlanta who heads to the titular neighborhood to spend the summer with his grandfather who he's never met. At some point, he will apparently run in to Lee's Mookie who is said to be making an appearance of some kind in a cameo role. Otherwise, this one is rounded by a batch of lesser known names including Clarke Peters, Jules Brown, Toni Lysaith, James Ransone and Thomas Jefferson Byrd. Meanwhile, the endlessly busy "Man On Wire...

"MacArthur Park" is a clear-eyed, unsentimental look at the crack subculture at its lowest level. The story takes place in Los Angeles' once elegant MacArthur Park, now notorious for being home to addicts, hookers, homeless and violent gangbangers. The movie penetrates this community to put human faces on the excruciating sickness that is drug addiction.
But as a "drug procedural," the film adds little to other movie portraits of addiction ranging from "Panic in Nedle Park" to "Less Than Zero" and "Requiem for a Dream". As uncompromising as it is uncommercial, "MacArthur Park" will have a tough time finding audiences willing to immerse themselves in human misery in hopes of better understanding how drugs imprison te human spirit.
The story behind this movie is, in a sense, more compelling than the one the movie tells. Actor Billy Wirth, who here makes his feature directing debut, was making a documentary on homelessness when he ran into the girlfriend of Tyrone Atins, a crack addict with a 300-page manuscript he wrote while in jail about his life in MacArthur Park.
This became the basis for the movie's script, which Wirth and others rewrote. Then, a week before production began, Atkins reunited with his son for te first time in 12 years.
The film's backbone contains a similar father-son story. Cody Thomas Jefferson Byrd, who manages to suggest quiet authority even in his destitution) is an aging addict whom other junkies look up to. The former musician talks abut quitting the life and even makes plans with P-air (rap musician Bad Azz) to get him into a studio to record his rap songs.
But nothing much comes of such talk until a surprise appearance by the son (Brandon Adams) Cody abandoned along with his mother ive years before. Learning his wife has died is a splash in his face of bitter reality.
But Cody's daily routine doesn't immediately change. Through him, the movie gives glimpses into the hapless lives of his friends -- his girlfriend (Cynda Williams), te park pimp (Sticky Fingaz), the group's mother hen (Ellen Cleghorne), a con artist and dealer (Carlton Wilborn) and a naive young woman (Sydney Tamia Poitier) attracted to the park's seediness -- as well as a coked-up TV star (Balthazar Getty) who comes y in a white limo to score drugs.
Things apparently have to get much worse than they already are for Cody to abandon his "pipe dreams." And so they do, with a police raid, brutal beatings, several senseless killings and mixtures of coke and booze almost ethal in themselves.
Other than the occasional "outsider" such as Cody's son and a young woman who kicked her habit, the movie is essentially filled with delusional characters. No one possesses any rational sense of the urgency of his condition or the dagers of his everyday life.
The actors are extremely good at conveying this odd sort of naivete with honesty and even a kind of wit. Kristian Bernier's nervous camera and music by Stephen Perkins and SKY that flips between hip-hop and jazz nicely underscoe the restless and dire nature of the addicts' lives.
The movie does end on a note of redemption. But even that note feels tentative.
