Here’s an interesting new company in the TV packaging space… Revolution Films founder Andrew Eaton, who produced Netflix’s The Crown, has partnered with The Fall exec producer Justin Thomson and Tracey Scoffield and David Tanner from Rainmark Films to launch DoveTale Media.
The company was established at the start of the year to help package high-profile TV projects and provide executive producer services to third party producers and broadcasters.
It has already scored its first project – a miniseries called Faceless from Spiral writer Virginie Brac and Oliver Butcher, the writer behind Chadwick Boseman’s Message From The King. Thomson has joined forces with Léonis’ Jean-Benoît Gillig and Gub Neal, his former colleague at Endemol Shine-owned Artists Studio, to develop it as an eight-part thriller, a French-British co-pro that will be set in the corridors of power on both sides of the Channel, involving murder, betrayal, blackmail, high...

Lille, France — France’s Leonis and the U.K.’s Artists Studio, owned by Endemol Shine, are re-teaming with Virginie Brac, one of France’s most celebrated screenwriters, on the development of a new miniseries “Faceless,” described by Endemol Shine as “a smart, tense, disruptive thriller which dynamites Anglo-French entente cordiale.”
Leonis’ Jean-Benoît Gillig, Artists Studio’s Gub Neal and Justin Thomson at DoveTale, which will also develop “Faceless,” made the announcement at France’s Series Mania. The co-development deal follows on Leonis, Artists Studio and Brac’s first collaboration, “Insoupconnable,” a series which world premiered last weekend at Series Mania.
Described by Endemol Shine as a “provocative new show,” and scripted by Brac and Oliver Butcher, “Faceless” “blows open the cracks at the heart of the European project,” taking audiences on a “wild ride through the corridors of power on both sides of the Channel,” Endemol Shine continued. The...

It‘s remarkable what a Marvel contract will do for an actor’s profile. Chadwick Boseman has spent over a decade working his way up through episodic television appearances to little seen, excellent lead roles in films such as 42 and Get On Up. Then came his casting as Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and suddenly, Chadwick Boseman has found himself at the top of everybody’s wish-list. The result is that a Chadwick Boseman film now attracts a great deal of attention, and some interesting casting – and Message From The King is no exception.
With an apparent view to begin shooting in March, Boseman is set to headline the action thriller, with Fabrice Du Welz (Alleluia) in the director’s chair. It is the tale of a South African man named Jacob King, who travels to Los Angeles in search of his sister’s stepson, and an appropriate amount of vengeance,...

Director: Fabrice du Welz // Writers: Oliver Butcher, Stephen Cornwell
Belgian director Fabrice du Welz announced himself with a memorable debut over a decade ago with 2004’s Calvaire, a film meant to be the first chapter in his loosely related Ardennes trilogy. Fascinating, bizarre, and perhaps the most successfully strange and unnerving auteur since Lynch, du Welz’s next two features were treated to problematic releases, including 2008’s underrated Vinyan, and the 2014 debacle, Colt 45, which was yanked out of the director’s hands and released in France (it has yet to reach the Us). But 2014 also marked a strong return for du Welz with the excellent Alleluia, the second part of his Ardennes trilogy, reuniting him with star Laurent Lucas and providing Lola Duenas with one of the best roles of her career. It was announced that du Welz was also working on another feature, Children of the Gun,...

Before he takes on the role of Black Panther for Marvel. Chadwick Boseman will be headlining the thriller Message From The King.
The newly-announced Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman, will be taking on his Marvel role for the first time in Captain America: Civil War. But he's still got time to squeeze another project in. He's been confirmed to star in the new thriller Message From The King, that's being directed by Fabrice Du Weiz (who helmed Alleluia). Earlier last week (sorry for the late posting!) I got the chance to check out Universal’s Riddick, the latest entry into the Chronicles of Riddick franchise that everyone assumed was dead after a poor second film. Does this latest film manage to recapture the magic that made everyone fall in love with the titular character to begin with? Or does it fall short? Come inside to check out my thoughts on the film.
The Basics
Riddick, the latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000's hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick reunites writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, The Fugitive) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, xXx). Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy. The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a...

Vin Diesel ‘Riddick’ box office: Underwhelming domestic debut Universal’s distribution chief Nikki Rocco may have called Riddick‘s opening-weekend figures "a great result," but an estimated $18.7 million from 3,107 North American theaters — $2.5 million of that total from 314 IMAX locations — for an action-packed sequel starring Vin Diesel is a disappointing debut. In fact, if studio estimates for the September 6-8, 2013, weekend are on target, Riddick‘s per-theater average barely surpassed the $6,000 mark: $6,010 per location, to be exact. And even though it’s true that the weekend after Labor Day tends to be pathetically slow at the U.S./Canada box office, and that this year’s top-ten figures were 29% above last year’s, Riddick‘s box-office gross undeniably fell below expectations. (Photo: Vin Diesel in Riddick.) Box office pundits, for instance, had been predicting an opening north of $20 million for the $38 million-budgeted, independently financed sci-fi actioner. And Riddick‘s opening-weekend gross...

Director: David Twohy. Writers: David Twohy, Jim Wheat, Ken Wheat, Oliver Butcher, and Stephen Cornwell. Cast: Vin Diesel, Jordi Mollà, Matt Nable, Katee Sackhoff and Dave Bautista. It has been nine years since actor Vin Diesel has played the character Riddick. The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) was a bolder and bigger story compared to the first film, Pitch Black (2000). Here, in director David Twohy's second sequel, Riddick is a smaller story, in which Riddick returns to his sci-fi and semi-horror roots. The character of Riddick develops very little, but Riddick is still an entertaining sci-fi story, set in a hostile and alien environment. As backstory, the first film, Pitch Black, did not perform spectacularly well in theatres. However, Pitch Black found a home entertainment market, which led to a larger sequel. The Chronicles of Riddick, despite what most critics tell you, was an exceptional film. The scope of story, settings...

"Somewhere along the way I lost a step… gotta find that animal side again."
Those words, croaked early in the film by Vin Diesel's titular antihero and bathed in metatextuality, sum up far more than the character's intentions. Riddick manages to salvage a franchise that faltered by adopting the strategy that A Good Day to Die Hard desperately required - a return to the primal basics of the original film in order to atone for its bloated and ill-conceived predecessor.
Gone is the overly lavish aesthetic and muddled plotting that blighted 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick. A pared down, 'cat and mouse' story set in one location is wisely adopted instead of pursuing some tedious mythology, harking back to the efficient sci-fi thriller Pitch Black,...

Tim Miller is set to make his feature directorial debut on the adaptation of Warren Ellis' Gravel for Legendary Pictures. Deadline reports that Oliver Butcher and Stephen Cornwell are writing the live action movie, which is being produced by Rick Alexander and executive produced by Ellis. With that whole Deadpool directing gig not taking off as hoped, VFX artist and aspiring director Tim Miller needs something else to helm. Legendary Pictures have come in and granted the solution, with Deadline reporting that he’s signed for Gravel, the film version of Warren Ellis‘ (Red) comic series; Stephen Cornwell and Oliver Butcher have been working on the script.
If you’re like myself and know zilch about the publication, it might be nice to know that Gravel follows William Gravel, a British S.A.S. officer who’s regularly hired to fight supernatural creatures — a task made possible with the gift of “skills in dark magic.” Miller makes perfect since for a story such as that, judging by the résumé of his company, Blur Studio, as well as his own work on the dark and kinetic opening titles for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I couldn't stop raving about David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo for a few months. And while I loved the whole film, top to bottom, it's the brilliant title sequence that gets your attention and draws you in. So it's no surprise to hear that its creator, Tim Miller, has landed a director's gig.
According to Deadline, Miller will take the helm on Gravel, an adaptation by Legendary Pictures of a Warren Ellis title about a British S.A.S. solider who wields deadly magic and battles hordes of demons by night. So, yeah, the potential is there for this to be one kickass experience.
Legendary will produce the project with Rick Alexander with Ellis as executive producer. Oliver Butcher and Stephen Cornwell are writing the script.
And for those of you who've not yet seen Miller's incredible work in the Fincher film - shame on you!

His Ryan Reynolds-starring Deadpool frustratingly remains in development limbo, but Tim Miller has found another off-kilter comics property to claim his attention, in the form of Warren Ellis' Gravel.Gravel began life as a sporadically released limited comic series, co-created by Ellis and Mike Wolfer, before becoming a regular monthly title with Wolfer at the reins on his own. It involves "combat magician" William Gravel, a British Sas soldier who specialises in magic as it applies to war (he'd have been useful to The Men Who Stare At Goats) and occasionally moonlights as a mercenary on X-Files style gigs that require supernatural solutions. It's potentially a sort of Constantine-meets-Black Hawk Down.Miller comes from an FX background, working on X-Men and Scott Pilgrim among many other projects and co-founding the CG animation studio Blur. He was recently the man behind the supercool opening titles of David Fincher...

With The Raven heading to cinemas, we met its director, James McTeigue, to talk films, R-ratings, V For Vendetta Masks, pet raccoons, and much more…
Director James McTeigue was responsible for adapting the shadowy world of Alan Moore’s V For Vendetta in 2006, and painted the big screen crimson in the violent Ninja Assassin three years later. Now, McTeigue has brought shadows and gore together for the period serial killer thriller The Raven, which sees Edgar Allan Poe on the trail of a murderer whose crimes are inspired by the author’s tales of the macabre.
Ahead of The Raven’s UK release this Friday, it was a pleasure to sit with McTeigue and talk about Poe, the iconic status of V For Vendetta’s Fawkes mask, R-rated movies, and best of all, pet raccoons…
I wanted to start off, if I may, by talking about raccoons. Was the idea...

A problem that a director will often face when taking historical figures and transplanting them to film is dealing with the work that other filmmakers have done with the same people. If they made their mark before, your film will be compared to theirs; this happens all the time, much to the frustration of those working on these projects.
Such is the challenge that James McTeigue will face with Ness/Capone, an upcoming drama that Deadline says he’ll be helming. The point of comparison here is Brian De Palma‘s The Untouchables, which starred Kevin Costner as Eliot Ness and Robert De Niro as Al Capone. Although The Untouchables is not a great film, the image of these two men on opposite sides of the law is, for many, linked to it entirely.
This could stand on its own, though, as it sounds like it’ll take things in a different direction.

Exclusive: James McTeigue, who just completed the John Cusack-starrer The Raven for Relativity Media, is getting back in business with Ryan Kavanaugh. I’m told that McTeigue is making a deal to direct Ness/Capone, the Grant Pierce Myers script that made the 2010 Black List and puts a new spin on the epic battle between Eliot Ness and Al Capone during the Prohibition Era 1920s. Relativity acquired it in April. McTeigue is negotiating, even as he is casting his next film, Message From the King, the Oliver Butcher- and Stephen Cornwell-scripted thriller about an enigmatic outsider who comes to L.A. to investigate the sudden disappearance of his sister. That film is being financed by FilmNation Entertainment. Ness/Capone covers the feud in more shades of gray than were evident in The Untouchables. Ness is a skirt-chasing 26-year-old publicity hound who seemed to get an adrenaline charge out of courting danger,...

One of the more interesting comic book/graphic novel adaptations to be released in the last 10 years is James McTeigue's big-screen version of Alan Moore's V For Vendetta. The film proved McTeigue to be a talented director, mixing cool action with a meaningful story. He just recently finished working on The Raven with John Cusack playing Edgar Allan Poe, and has now chosen his next directorial project, a thriller by the name of Message From the King. James McTeigue, the director of V For Vendetta and Ninja Assassin has been brought on board to direct FilmNation Entertainment's thriller Message From the King. The script for the film was written by Oliver Butcher and Stephen Cornwell (Unknown).
According to Deadline the film "centers on Jacob King, an enigmatic outsider who comes to La to investigate the sudden disappearance of his sister."
It's a pretty simple plot summary that I can get behind. I enjoy watching these kind of thrillers, especially if it's good and keeps you on the edge of your seat. As for McTeigue directing it, he's hit or miss for me, I loved V for Vendetta but I thought Ninja Assassin sucked. He recently finished shooting The Raven, which star John Cusack as Edgar Allen Poe, and that looks like it could be a really good film.
What are your thoughts on McTeigue taking on this new film project?...

While this one is perhaps best filed under the category of 'thriller', the word is that the upcoming Message From the King has enough of a sadistic bent to it that genre fans will probably really dig it too. Which is why it's getting a little mention here on DC.
Ninja Assassin director James McTeigue has signed on to direct Message From the King, a mystery/thriller in which the titular King is a rogue stranger who arrives in La to investigate the sudden disappearance of his sister. McTeigue will direct from a script penned by Oliver Butcher and Stephen Cornwell (the duo behind the terrible Unknown).
The film is to be produced by FilmNation Entertainment and The Ink Factory, whose head of production, Rhodri Thomas, delivered the following tidbit: “This script harks back to our favorite character-led thrillers of the 1970s but depicts Los Angeles in a distinctive, contemporary light.

Briefly: James McTeigue came up working for the Wachowskis and worked in their shadow to some extent while directing V For Vendetta and Ninja Assassin. But in the past couple years he has started to forge his own path. First he shot the literary thriller The Raven, starring John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe, and has that film in post-production now. To follow up that period piece, Mr. McTeigue is now set to direct a modern thriller, called Message From the King. Oliver Butcher and Stephen Cornwell (writers of Unknown) scripted, and Deadline [1] describes the plot as following "Jacob King, an enigmatic outsider who comes to La to investigate the sudden disappearance of his sister." FilmNation is producing and plans to shoot the film this fall. [1] http://www.deadline.com/2011/07/james-mcteigue-directing-message-from-the-king/...

Though his last film Ninja Assassin may have had some killer action, director James McTeigue didn't exactly deliver a home run. Of course, I still have faith in the V for Vendetta helmer, and now have my sights set on his new project. Deadline reports FimNation Entertainment has set the filmmaker to direct Message from the King, a new thriller from Unknown writers Oliver Butcher and Stephen Cornwell. The film follows Jacob King, an enigmatic outsider who comes to La to investigate the sudden disappearance of his sister.
