The Roku Channel will shine a spotlight on the work of the veteran-led disaster response organization Team Rubicon through an unscripted series set to premiere May 25 from the production team behind PBS’ “This Old House.”
“Team Rubicon” follows the organization’s volunteers as they are sent off in deployments across the country and overseas to help the neediest victims of natural and man-made disasters, from the recent storms in Selma, Ala., to the recent record snowfalls in mountain communities north of San Bernardino, Calif.
The half-hour series, hosted by “This Old House’s” Kevin O’Connor, documents the real-world impact of extreme weather events and how the heaviest burdens fall hardest on the poorest communities and most vulnerable residents. The 13 self-contained episodes also emphasize the importance that volunteering plays for servicemembers in their transition to civilian life.

Roku leadership is experiencing its first big shakeup under new chief Charlie Collier, with current vice president of programming Rob Holmes deciding to depart the company in March after six years, and head of originals, David Eilenberg, being promoted to head of content across all of Roku Media.
A Turner and ITV Studios vet, Eilenberg’s elevation will bring content at Roku Originals and Roku Studios under one leader, and signals Collier’s focus on Roku’s platform advantages and creative as it enters its next stage of evolution as a media company that has racked up WGA, DGA and PGA nominations, as well as its first Critics’ Choice wins, in recent months — but also experienced a severe stock drop on poor earnings results and outlook.
Eilenberg joined Roku in March 2022, coming into his then-role ahead of former Fox Entertainment CEO Collier’s appointment as president of Roku Media last October.

Screen Queensland is providing $3.3 million in re-allocated funding to support the stricken Queensland screen industry through the Covid-19 crisis.
The primary aim is to ensure as many productions as possible are ready to resume or start filming as soon as it’s safe to do so.
The initiatives include an extra $250,000 for the existing Ideas Program and a new Creative Consultations Program to mentor up-and-coming writers and other creatives. More measures will be announced in coming weeks.
Screen Queensland CEO Kylie Munnich says the agency’s support will focus on five key areas: Continuity for productions, creativity for screen practitioners, skills, business development and screen culture.
““It’s vital that we focus on continuity and creativity now so we can support the creation of local jobs for crew through existing productions that can quickly ramp up again, as well as new projects that are poised to commence filming...

More than 60 per cent of the 500-plus people who responded to Screen Queensland’s survey on the impact on the screen sector from Covid-19 in the past two days are freelancers or contractors – and most are jobless.
That’s according to Screen Queensland CEO Kylie Munnich, who says the agency is committed to supporting the industry through this crisis as well as focusing on how to prepare for a full recovery when it’s business as usual.
Munnich has convened a broadly-based Queensland screen industry task force which will meet fortnightly or more frequently if required and is liaising closely with her team including head of development and production Jo Dillon.
The members are WildBear Entertainment principal and executive producer Veronica Fury, Bacon Factory Films director Dean Gibson, Hoodlum Entertainment chief content officer and former Sq CEO Tracey Vieira, Cutting Edge’s owner/director Michael Burton,...

I grew up with Flight of the Navigator. It’s always been one of my favourite movies. A family sci-fi adventure film that kinda fell under the radar to some degree and has since become a cult classic. It’s charming, it’s funny, it’s nostalgic as hell and it’s incredibly entertaining, so I was completely and utterly on board when Second Sight announced their upcoming Blu-ray release. A limited edition release with special features, extra goodies and a new transfer? Fans are very happy. I had a chance to take a look at the blu-ray release and here are my thoughts on it, as well as my opinions, all these years later, on the film itself.

Cutting Edge Sydney has hired Simon Maddison as VFX Supervisor and creative lead.
He had been one of the founders of Fuel VFX and his recent work includes Iron Man 2, The Avengers and Cowboys and Aliens, plus commericals work for Virgin, Gucci and Sony.
“I’m excited by making things that are new. In an industry that is always moving forward at a break neck speed it’s a wonderful challenge to try and harness that. In my opinion if it’s never been seen before and it gets peoples’ attention in a positive way then I’ve done my job,” said Maddison.
“The other thing is the mediums that we have at our disposal right now. In today’s environment the delivery of any given message feels almost limitless. Finding new and exciting ways of achieving that is the next challenge we have in front of us and I intend to play a part in...

Return of the Living Dead, the Basket Case Trilogy… Second Sight now continue their current (and fantastic) trend of re-releasing 80s classics on Blu-ray with two family favourites – Short Circuit and Flight of the Navigator – that are, in my humble opinion, essential purchases for 80s movie fans. Even if you already own the DVDs!
Short Circuit

As a young lad, Flight of the Navigator was one of my favorite movies. Its adventurous tale of time travel, world travel and space travel all through the eyes of a 12-year-old boy was undeniably entertaining and as the years wore on, my fondness for the film only grew. To be honest, I don't remember the first time I saw the movie. Chances are it happened on VHS or on The Wonderful World of Disney as the film was a box office bomb, opening at #9 and grossing only $18.5 million total. Watching the tale of Davey and Max, an odd couple in the middle of a massive mystery, a quarter century after its release only cemented the fact that director Randal Kleiser made a classic movie back in 1986. One that still hold up on this, its silver anniversary. A few things immediately stand out when you pop in a copy of...
