Welcome back, dear readers! We’ve nearly made it through another week and December is (quite literally) just right around the corner. And since the holiday season is pretty much upon us, we’re back with another installment of our annual Holiday Gift Guide. For today, I’m celebrating a handful of books that I have either had the chance to check out this year and fell in love with, or several titles that I’m confident genre fans will love that I just haven’t had a chance to check out yet for myself.
To make things easier, I’ve sorted the books into two categories: non-ficton and fiction. And also, just so everything is on the up-and-up, I want to mention that I did include my own latest book in today’s edition of the Hgg just because the artists featured in this second volume of Monsters, Makeup...

Special Mention: Battle Royale
Written and directed by Kinji Fukasaku
Japan, 2000
The concept of The Hunger Games owes much to Koushun Takami’s cult novel Battle Royale, adapted for the cinema in 2000 by Kinji Fukasaku. The film is set in a dystopian alternate-universe, in Japan, with the nation utterly collapsed, leaving 15 percent unemployed and 800,000 students boycotting school. The government passes something called the Millennium Educational Reform Act, which apparently provides for a class of ninth-graders to be chosen each year and pitted against one another on a remote island for 3 days. Each student is given a bag with a randomly selected weapon and a few rations of food and water, and sent off to kill each other in a no-holds-barred fight to the death. With 48 contestants, only one will go home alive. Yes, this has been often cited as the original Hunger Games; whether or not Suzanne Collins borrowed heavily...

The world's entertainment capital is losing out as studios switch big TV and film productions to other locations to save money, leaving studios as little more than grand tourist attractions
Among the tourist hordes on the "walk of fame" last week, you could feel Hollywood casting its spell. They genuflected at the names of actors and film-makers embedded in pink stars in the pavement. Gloria Swanson. John Wayne. Will Smith. Francis Ford Coppola. Quentin Tarantino. Generations of glamour and talent, ringed in brass and close enough to touch.
Open-air vans and double-decker buses packed with camera-toting passengers swayed past palm trees and the Chinese Theatre en route to celebrity home tours – which are in truth celebrity hedge tours, because you seldom glimpse the mansions behind the shrubbery. No matter, the tours are extremely popular: there are now about 40 operators, up from just a handful a few years ago.

★★★★☆ A multi-award winning 101 minutes of dialogue-less travelogue about three Neanderthal tribesmen sent on a mission to find and steal fire from another clan, Jean-Jacques Annaud's Quest for Fire (1981) is nothing if not ambitious. Everett McGill (best known as Big Ed Hurley from Twin Peaks), Ron Perlman and Nameer El-Kadi star as the three hirsute proto-humans who encounter strange and violent scenes on their journey. Cinematographer Claude Agostini's work is reminiscent (perhaps because of the ape-like appearance of the cast) of The Planet of the Apes, taking in a variety of sweeping vistas.
The level of technical craft on display is astonishing. Justly awarded for the brilliant make-up and prosthetic work by Sarah Monzani and Michèle Burke and natural looking production design by a whole parade of talented art directors and designers, Quest for Fire has an earthy, almost tactile look to it. He’s one of Ireland’s hottest exports and Colin Farrell was all smiles as he arrived at the 8th Annual Oscar Wilde: Honoring the Irish In Film event last night (February 21).
The “Phone Booth” hunk slicked back his hair and looked dapper in a black jacket, white button-up shirt, and black trousers as he posed for the press outside Bad Robot in Santa Monica.
During the shindig, Colin was honored with an Oscar Wilde Award for making such an impact on the film industry over the years.
Farell thanked his parents and joked they were, “rumored to have genetically made me Irish.” Michael R Burns and Michele Burke also received trophies.

A very sexy Colin Farrell suited up last night in Santa Monica, Calif., where he was honored at the U.S.-Ireland Alliance Award ceremony. Held at J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot Production studio, the 2013 Oscar Wilde: Honoring the Irish in Film pre-Oscars event included a slew of Hollywood talent and over 400 guests. Partygoers were in great spirits (thanks, in part, to an amazing whiskey tasting bar sponsored by Tullamore D.E.W.!), and the jovial audience laughed and cheered as Farrell, Abrams, Michael Burns and Michele Burke took the podium and spoke during the night. "It's lovely! I mean it's better than getting a slap in the face and told you're crap," Farrell joked of his honor on...

Jj Abrams is hosting it and Colin Farrell's up for an award – welcome to what Steven Spielberg calls the best party in La
When Jason O'Mara moved to Hollywood, an unknown actor with a Dublin brogue, it would have been useful to plug into the Irish network – except there wasn't one. "When I first got here, I wasn't aware of any Irish community that I should be part of."
Little harm it did him. A decade later O'Mara is a familiar face, thanks to network dramas such as Vegas, Justice, Life On Mars and Terra Nova. All the characters were American and the actor worked hard with a dialogue coach to erase unwanted lilts.
But this Thursday, days before the Oscars, O'Mara and hundreds of compatriots will gather to celebrate Irish success, and belated networking, at an annual pre-Oscar hoolie that Steven Spielberg has called one of the best parties in La.

Last Friday in Spain we saw the opening weekend release for “There Be Dragons”, the new film from acclaimed and twice Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind “The Mission” and “The Killing Fields”. Budgeted at $35 million, the co-production between Spain, U.S and Argentina the film proved to be a moderate success already before its release as it grossed an impressive 300 000 Euros in pre-sold tickets, although we have to take in consideration big part of these tickets were part of a charity campaign for Doctors Without Borders as well as other non benefit organizations, a clever marketing campaign no doubt benefited the film's tally. Starring Charlie Cox (Stardust, Casanova); Wes Bentley (American Beauty, Ghost Rider); Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace, Max Payne); Derek Jacobi (Gladiator, La Brújula Dorada); Dougray Scott (Mission Impossible II, Ever After), Rodrigo Santoro (300, Che), Golshifteh Farahani (Body of Lies) and Geraldine Chaplin; this also has a first rate crew...
