Simone Ashley has picked the follow-up to her breakthrough performance as Kathani “Kate” Sharma in season 2 of the hit Netflix series Bridgerton, as Deadline reports that she has the lead role in the psychological thriller This Tempting Madness, which just wrapped production in Los Angeles.
The film marks the feature directorial debut of Jennifer E. Montgomery, who also wrote the screenplay with her husband Andrew M. Davis. Davis has a background in cinematography, including some work on the Sam Raimi-produced horror anthology series 50 States of Fright, so he lensed his wife’s first movie. Inspired by a true story, it sees Ashley taking on the role of a young woman who awakens from a coma grievously injured, memory fractured, her husband arrested. But as she puts together the pieces of her past, she starts to question her own actions — and her perception of reality.

When director Tim Story’s horror comedy The Blackening was released back in June, co-writer and star Dewayne Perkins told Variety that he envisioned the film being the start of a franchise, one that could bring back the “same group, sprinkle in some new people. I feel like we’ve got something good, and I love the dynamic, but fresh blood always turns things up a little bit.” Now Variety has confirmed that a sequel to The Blackening is officially in development!
The Blackening didn’t exactly set the box office of fire, earning just $18.5 million… but since the movie had a budget of $3 million (plus another $2 million for marketing), that’s enough for producer MRC and domestic distributor Lionsgate to feel that it’s worth going back to for a sequel. They’re developing the follow-up with Perkins, co-writer Tracy Oliver, and producer E. Brian Dobbins.

MRC and Lionsgate are developing a sequel to “The Blackening,” the hit horror-comedy from Dewayne Perkins and Tracy Oliver.
After the microbudget production (just $5 million) made more than $18 million at the box office, producer MRC and domestic distributor Lionsgate have entered into talks with Perkins, Oliver and producer E. Brian Dobbins to develop a follow-up film.
Directed by Tim Story and co-written by Perkins and Oliver, “The Blackening” follows a group of college friends who reunite for Juneteenth weekend and are hunted by a killer who asks them to determine who is the Blackest among them — lampooning the common horror movie trope that sees the Black character die first. Perkins initially conceived the story as a sketch for his comedy troupe 3Peat, which developed into a short for Comedy Central, before Oliver reached out to develop it into a feature.

Directed by Tim Story (Ride Along, Think Like A Man, Barbershop) and co-written by Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip, Harlem) and Dewayne Perkins (“The Amber Ruffin Show,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), The Blackening skewers genre tropes and poses the sardonic question: if the entire cast of a horror movie is Black, who dies first?

With the tongue-in-cheek tagline of “They all can’t die first,” the all-Black ensemble cast of “The Blackening” sets out to survive a surprisingly deadly Juneteenth weekend trip to a cabin in the woods. A twisted killer seemingly unleashed from an ancient board game forces the friend group to play by his rules while they are picked off one by one.

Lionsgate has set the release of MRC’s acclaimed horror-comedy The Blackening for June 16, 2023 – Juneteenth weekend – and the official poster has arrived this morning.
Additionally, we’ve learned the trailer will debut tomorrow, March 1st!
The Blackening, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, centers around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this ain’t no motherf****** game.

Director Tim Story’s horror comedy The Blackening is said to take place during a Juneteenth weekend getaway, so it’s very fitting that Lionsgate has decided to give the film a wide theatrical release on June 16, 2023 – which happens to be Juneteenth weekend. The Blackening made its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and Lionsgate came out the winner of a bidding war over the distribution rights with an offer that was said to be (according to Deadline) just short of 20 million.
Story directed The Blackening from a screenplay by Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins. Inspired by a Perkins-scripted 3Peat comedy sketch that aired on Comedy Central in 2018, the film is about
a group of Black friends who go away for the weekend only to find themselves trapped in a cabin with a killer who forces them to play a game with life-or-death consequences. The idea asks a reasonable...

Everardo Gout directs the movie opening from Universal on July 2
What if the annual Purge didn’t stop at daybreak and instead continued its streak of murderous, lawless mayhem forever? That’s the premise of “The Forever Purge,” in which a sect of marauders conspire to make sure this year’s Purge has no end.
“The Forever Purge” is the fifth and potentially final film in the horror franchise, which imagines an America in which crime has largely been eradicated by making all crime, including murder, legal for one day only.
Over the years, the franchise has evolved from a simple home invasion movie to a social commentary and satire about elections and American politics.
This latest entry aims to continue that streak. Everardo Gout, who has been a director on series including “Mars,” “The Terror” and “Snowpiercer,” is taking over directing duties on “The Forever Purge,” and the franchise’s original writer,...

Covid-19 mutates to Covid-23 four years into quarantine in the first trailer to Michael Bay’s pandemic thriller “Songbird.”

The pic was set for a September 25 theatrical release, but, as with all films, things remained up in the air due to the current landscape. Even so, Roadside & Ld shared Taymor and producers Lynn Hendee and Alex Saks’ passion for the film and felt that it should reach the widest possible audience prior to the election.

Universal-Blumhouse’s The Forever Purge, which was dated for July 10 prior to Warner Bros.’ The Tenet, is now unset. Solstice Studios’ Russell Crowe road rage movie Unhinged on July 1 remains the first wide release back for those cinemas reopening.
We hear there is no determination yet as to whether Forever Purge goes to Pvod, which is where Universal released Trolls World Tour to a near $100M revenue and has the Judd Apatow movie The King of Staten Island scheduled to go on June 12. Given the uncertainty of the theatrical business right now, another date on the release calendar is being assessed for Forever Purge.
The last three Purge pics played the July month with the franchise’s four films grossing more than $456M worldwide.

Gloria Steinem’s biopic is officially hitting the road, securing domestic distribution from Ld Entertainment and Roadside Attractions.
Directed by Julie Taymor, “The Glorias” premiered in the official selection at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. It stars several generations of actresses taking on key phases in activist icon Steinem’s life, led by Julianne Moore and Alicia Vikander.
Ld and Roadside are planning on an early fall release ahead of the 2020 election, and promised a national promotional tour backed by Steinem. Endeavor Content represented filmmakers in the sale.
“With ‘The Glorias,’ Julie Taymor and her extraordinary cast paint a commanding portrait of an American leader, the remarkable Gloria Steinem, and also salute the millions of amazing women who have fought alongside Gloria for social change during the last half-century,” said Roadside Attractions co-heads Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff. “We are incredibly energized to bring this epic story to theaters this fall.

The Glorias, Julie Taymor’s movie about Gloria Steinem that spans five decades to tell the story of the feminist icon, has been acquired by Ld Entertainment and Roadside Attractions after its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The North American rights deal, the terms of which were not disclosed, reteams Ld and Roadside, whose last tie-up, the Judy Garland biopic Judy, just won Renee Zellweger the Best Actress Oscar.
A fall 2020 release date, which positions the pic both in awards season and ahead of the 2020 presidential election, is planned. A national promotional tour with significant support from Steinem is also in the works. The deal was negotiated by Endeavor Content.
“Telling my story in Julie Taymor’s genius movie carries my hope that we all have a right to tell our stories – I hope it encourages you to tell yours,” Steinem said in a release announcing the deal Thursday.

Last night, one of the last of the awards season dominos fell when the Directors Guild of America had their annual awards gala. With the DGA having chimed in, it’s just left to BAFTA and their forthcoming show, in terms of what can really factor in to an Academy Award voter’s mind. There were two frontrunners going into the evening in the two major categories, though an upset was speculated in one. Go figure then, a surprise winner was crowned somewhere, but not where we all expected… In an upset, the First Time Director category did not go to Bradley Cooper for A Star Is Born. Instead, the Directors Guild gave that prize to Bo Burnham for Eighth Grade. Obviously, Burnham did strong work and is deserving, but this marks the first time that someone nominated in both categories did not win this one in a walk. Obviously,...
