A returned Oscar statuette that originally belonged to Marlon Brando, a $3.5-billion Malaysian money-laundering scheme, the rights to “Dumb and Dumber To” — just another day in Hollywood. As part of the federal government’s ongoing investigation into Red Granite Pictures, a company co-founded by the Malaysian Prime Minister’s stepson suspected of illegal activities, Leonardo DiCaprio has handed over the Best Actor trophy that Brando won for “On the Waterfront,” which he received as a birthday present from Red Granite four years ago. He probably wasn’t too sad about it, given that he finally won his own last year.

TNT has already established quite the profitable brand for itself as home to the kinds of square-jawed, retro dramas that the broadcast networks stopped making a long time ago. So it stands to reason that the channel would eventually try getting into another business the networks have largely abandoned: the made-for-tv-movie. And if they can be the kinds of movies that fit comfortably alongside "The Closer" and "Rizzoli & Isles," so much the better. Over the next three weeks, TNT will be airing a half-dozen mystery movies, all based on works by best-selling authors like Sandra Brown and Mary Higgins Clark,...

The just-retired Regis Philbin is already eying his next big gig. Or gigs plural, even,
Speaking with New York Post‘s Page Six, the former Live! co-host announced that he and his team are “contemplating a show that is sort of a talent show…a family competition.” Philbin added that this latest project is “going to be on primetime” when and if it comes to fruition. Reege also says he has been approached about reviving the variety show format.

While original TV movies continue to struggle on broadcast TV as evident by the underwhelming ratings for the Hallmark Hall Of Fame film on ABC last night, the genre’s resurgence on basic cable continues. TNT has decided to extend its Mystery Movie Night franchise into the spring, greenlighting today the original movie Hornet’s Nest, an adaptation of the Patricia Cornwall novel that will star Sherry Stringfield and Virginia Madsen. The green light for Hornet’s Nest comes ahead of the debut of the TNT Mystery Movie Night, which features original movies based on popular crime novels. The franchise is set to premiere tomorrow with Scott Turow’s Innocent and continues Wednesday with the Sandra Brown novel Ricochet, starring John Corbett, Julie Benz and Gary Cole. The series will feature six movies this month and in December before returning in the spring with Hornet’s Nest and three other movies to be announced.

If you're feeling a little blue now that the summer TV season is winding down, don't fret, at least if you're a TNT fan. Why? The network has announced return dates for three of its current summer shows, which will allow them to finish out their seasons, and a date for arguably their most critically acclaimed show early next year.
Leverage will be returning on Sunday, November 27th for the first of 8 additional episodes in season four. The following night, The Closer and Rizzoli & Isles will both be returning (9:00 and 10:00, respectively) for 5 episode stints. All three will be coming back summer 2012 for their next full seasons, with The Closer's summer 2012 being its swan song.
Southland may not be joining the party of short episode stints in late fall/early winter, but that's because its fourth season will be premiering on Tuesday, January 17th, 2012 (10:00) for another 10 episode installment.

Exclusive: John Corbett and Julie Benz lead the cast of TNT's two-hour movie Ricochet, based on the best-selling book by Sandra Brown. Gary Cole and Kelly Overton co-star in the project, the second entry in the network's recently announced new TNT Tuesday Night Mystery movie franchise slated to launch in November that will feature six contemporary crime dramas, from true-crime stories to fictional mysteries. Det. Sgt. Duncan Hatcher (Corbett), a sexy Savannah homicide cop, falls hard for Elise Laird (Benz), a dishy damsel-in-distress. She's married to corrupt Judge Cato Laird (Cole), who consistently subverts Hatcher's efforts to bring a local drug lord to justice. Things get complicated when Hatcher and his feisty partner, Det. DeeDee Bowen (Overton), are called to the Laird home after Elise supposedly shoots an intruder in self-defense. Production on Ricochet begins next week in New Orleans. It looks like Andy Richter will be stepping from behind the podium on Conan to another podium (I am guessing) for a new game show on TBS entitled Pyramid. The show is reportedly a modern-day take on the iconic game show that began asThe $10,000 Pyramid.

Following months of speculation, TNT formally announced on Wednesday morning its plan to follow The Closer‘s upcoming seventh and final season with a spin-off series titled Major Crimes. I've spent most of my Sunday watching terrible, holiday related movies on TV. I know there are some good holiday movies, but more frequently they're terrible treacly messes that I can't. Stop. Watching. for some reason I can't pinpoint. They don't warm my heart, they don't make me want to be a better person, they actually sort of give me a bit of a headache but it's Sunday afternoon and I'm putting off packing for my trip home for Thanksgiving and cleaning my apartment before same. Anyone else have other good avoidance strategies they'd like to share? Here's your Sunday night TV:

"America's Funniest Home Videos" on ABC
"Football Night in America" on NBC
8:00pm: "19 Kids and Counting" on Tlc
"2010 American Music Awards" on ABC. Apparently there's a Backstreet Boys/New Kids on the Block performance that's supposed to be exciting to... someone? Honestly,...

There is fallout from producer Stanley M. Brooks' financial troubles ahead of settlement talks planned for Monday with AFTRA, DGA and the WGA West. All three guilds have him on their "strike" (do not work) lists over unpaid salaries or residual payments.
The fallout involves Lifetime, to which Brooks had been a frequent supplier for the past decade -- up until a week or so ago. THR has learned he has quietly sold his interest in the only two projects he still has with the A&E Television Networks division, apparently to clear any obstacle to their production and to raise money to pay his union obligations -- and salvage his reputation.
One of the two movies, which have not been announced by domestic rights holder Lifetime Movie Network, is the suspense thriller "Sandra Brown's Smoke Screen," now shooting in Vancouver and starring Jaime Pressly and Canadian Currie Graham.

Science fiction is one of those funny things that follows the same logic as the Supreme Court's stance on pornography: you may not be able to come up with a perfect definition that fits all the cases, but you know it when you see it. It's a genre that easily subsumes other genres. You can shoe horn mystery, horror, adventure, romance, or any other genre into a science fiction mold. The result? It's almost invariably shelved under science fiction. You ever see Asimov's robot mysteries filed next to Sandra Brown? Science Fiction is the barbeque of genres. Take any cuisine of food, and the instant you're cooking on a grill, it's barbeque. Same thing, take any story and the instant you add the dash of science fiction and you leave the other genres behind.

Sandra Brown has sold the option on her 1996 legal thriller The Witness to TwinStar Entertainment.
It's the first time in her 27-year career that Brown, who has written 56 New York Times best-sellers and has 70 million copies of her books in print, has made a movie deal.
Broken Road Prods.' Todd Garner (Anger Management) and TwinStar executive vp Lane Shefter Bishop will produce the feature film version, with TwinStar CEO Russell Werdin executive producing.
Brown has turned down several offers to adapt her books over the years. "Some excellent books have been made into excellent movies, but just as often the film renditions were bad," she said. "For decades I've been developing a 'voice' my readers recognize and expect. Lane Bishop approached me with a full understanding and appreciation of that voice."
Witness centers on idealistic public defender Kendall Deaton, who discovers a dark secret in the forest near her small South Carolina town. It leads her to turn state's witness against her white supremacist ex-husband and father-in-law as she struggles to discover whom she can trust.
