Latino-owned Luz Films announced its launch just before the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where its first film by first-time writer-director Alessandra Lacorazza Samudio, “In the Summers,” won the Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic competition. However, co-founder Sergio Lira says that impressive start isn’t nearly enough.
“This is an amazing win right out of the gate, but one is not enough,” said Lira, who serves as co-ceo with fellow founder Lynette Coll. “This is an amazing achievement that we did this right off the bat, but it’s a lot of what we’ve been diligently, silently working towards, and we want to keep doing it.”
With a mission of producing Latino-focused prestige and elevated-genre film and TV, the Luz principals know they face unique challenges. Shows for Latino audiences are often the first to be canceled or purged from streaming services. There aren’t enough global Latino...

Ahhh.. seems just like yesterday that Film Independent President Josh Welsh was on stage at the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards announcing the kickoff to our year-long #AD30 celebration, commemorating three uninterrupted decades—pandemics, strikes and recessions be damned!—of Film Independent Artist Development programs.
Of course, in reality that announcement was one full awards cycle ago, back when the Past Lives, Earth Mamas and May Decembers of the world were but a flicker in eyes of industry plaudit prognosticators. But the story of #AD30 has only grown in the interim.
Look no further than the program that started it all, Project Involve, which today announced the 27 new Fellows joining as part of its 2024 cohort—the 31st overall such cohort in a long line of inclusive, up-and-coming industry players. Project Involve alumni include Lulu Wang (Expats), Linda Yvette Chávez (Flamin’ Hot), Jomo Fray (All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt), Effie T. Brown...

On Tuesday morning, a letter signed by over 2,300 film and TV producers was sent to the president of the organization that bargains on behalf of studios and streamers with Hollywood unions, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Its message to AMPTP leader Carol Lombardini: Please remove the word “producers” from your organization’s title.
The letter, a copy of which was shared with The Hollywood Reporter, explained that “the inclusion of ‘Producers’ in your name inaccurately implies that all producers are part of this organization,” and noted that none of the independent producers who signed are members of the AMPTP. The letter continued that while AMPTP member companies “may technically ‘produce’ film and television in the verb definition of the word, the noun producer reflects a job and role on a film and television crew that is not what the AMPTP member companies or their employees do.

We originally posted the below piece a couple of weeks ago to tout the in-person return of the annual Film Independent Forum to the DGA in Los Angeles, happening this weekend, September 29-30. Since then, two new events have been added to the Forum schedule: Pedro Almodóvar’s Strange Way of Life and buzzy Sundance hit Fair Play. Action-packed!
***
For the first time since 2019 (hello fidget spinners!) Film Independent’s autumnal industry gathering—the Film Independent Forum—will be taking entirely live in person at its traditional home, the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles. Alternate venues, hybrid virtual sessions and a friggin’ global pandemic may have made things difficult to pin down in recent years, but this year all your #FiForum23 filmmaker panels, keynotes, industry networking events and more will be exactly where you expect. And they’ll be there for two days only, September 29-30. Get your passes today.

I love HBO’s Project Greenlight because it’s one of the few reality shows designed to document inevitable failure.
Sure, that’s not the spoken aspiration of the series, which launched on the names and star presence of producers Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Project Greenlight was created to give an opportunity for an unproven filmmaker to direct a low-budget feature with guaranteed distribution, and for viewers to learn about the filmmaking process through their behind-the-scenes misadventures. Those things, as audiences immediately learned, have absolutely nothing to do with making a good movie. Like the bear playing the violin, it’s entertaining enough that he’s doing it at all, and complaining about his bow posture is almost petty.
As Issa Rae, executive producer on Max’s new Project Greenlight reboot, diplomatically puts it, “The films of Project Greenlight past have… been Ok? You know? So we want to...

At Variety’s 10 Producers to Watch panel, held March 31 at the Sun Valley Film Festival, the first order of business was defining what it means to be a producer, a title — and a role — that encapsulates a number of responsibilities on a film.
“The way that I describe it is you’ve got to know a little bit about a lot of things in filmmaking,” said Rachael Fung, whose film “Fremont” later won best narrative film in the festival’s One in a Million category, recognizing features made for less than $1 million. “You’ve got to be able to understand and talk to every single person that touches the film at every single stage. And also it’s about finding those directors and filmmakers and understanding their vision and figuring out the best way to get that to screen.”

Keith Beauchamp (Till) Till and Keith Beauchamp
The struggle to make United Artists’ Till began, for producer Beauchamp, decades before the cameras started rolling. The film chronicles the life of Mamie Till-Mobley, mother of Emmett Till, the 14-year-old Black boy who was brutally tortured and murdered by white supremacists in 1955 Mississippi. After his killers went unpunished, Till-Mobley became a major voice of the civil rights movement.
“[She] was my mentor and friend,” explains Beauchamp, who directed the 2005 documentary The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till. “My whole career is literally based off of my work with Emmett Till.
This whole struggle, for 29 years of my life, to get this story to the big screen, was the challenge. I’m resurrecting someone that I knew. Understandably, I had this high bar of what this film should look like. For 67 years, people have tried to make...

Exclusive: Signature Entertainment has made one of its highest-profile acquisitions to date with UK & Irish rights to Elegance Bratton’s well-received military drama The Inspection from A24.

Written and directed by Bratton (Pier Kids) and produced by Effie T. Brown (Dear White People) and Chester Algernal Gordon (Port Authority), the film stars Jeremy Pope (One Night in Miami), Bokeem Woodbine (Halo), Gabrielle Union (Bring It On...

Need she remind you, Gabrielle Union has been a successful actress for a very long time. “But the way that people think of projects that center the Black community, Black audiences, Black needs/wants/desires, it’s like those No. 1 movies didn’t count,” she told IndieWire during a recent interview in Los Angeles. “The amount of success that me and my friends have had, with the budgets we’ve been given and the time we’ve had to shoot, it’s like it doesn’t count. And so the reinvention never stops.”
While she appreciates that she and her peers like Regina Hall, Regina King, and Sanaa Lathan are in a space where their best work seems ahead of them — “We’ve never worked more. It’s like being an ingenue at 50,” she said — Union has often put her focus on choosing opportunities that could spell commercial success. In the past,...

Thursday’s death of Queen Elizabeth II dominated the news cycle, but the first day of the Toronto International Film Festival was filled with hope for the future. Introducing opening-night entry “The Swimmers” at the Princess of Wales Theatre, TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey addressed the two pandemic years that disrupted everything.
“It was artists, storytellers, filmmakers, who were finding ways to move us, inspire us, to remind us what we’re living for,” he said. “I want to thank you, the best movie audience in the world, for being part of this experience again.”
That experience takes many forms. The festival is a beacon for awards-season titles as well as red-carpet galas, documentaries, genre films, and international cinema. It’s also a snapshot of how the industry views commercial movies at a most fragile moment.

“The Inspection” tells a heartbreaking story about surviving intense military training as a closeted gay man.
Tony and Emmy-nominated actor Jeremy Pope (“One Night in Miami”) stars as Ellis French, a homeless youth who joins the Marine Corps after his mother (Gabrielle Union) disowns him for being gay. Yet during training, Ellis falls for his superior (Raúl Castillo) while enduring the wrath of his sergeant (Bokeem Woodbine) after his sexual orientation is exposed.
Written and directed by Elegance Bratton, the A24 film “The Inspection” premieres at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and is set to close the New York Film Festival.
Bratton’s semi-autobiographical film was part of the Tribeca Film Institute project, with Bratton’s bio listing him as being thrown out of his mother’s house in New Jersey at age 16, leading him to be homeless for a decade prior to joining the U.S. Marine Corps as a combat cameraman.

Weeks before its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, military drama film “The Inspection” has received a first trailer from A24. The distributor has also set a Nov. 18 theatrical release date.
“The Inspection” is the narrative debut for writer-director Elegance Bratton, who previously helmed the feature documentary “Pier Kids,” which followed homeless queer youth in New York, and the Vice docuseries “My House,” which followed competitive ballroom dancing.
Bratton pulled from his own experiences as a gay man in Marine Corps basic training during the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell era for “The Inspection.” The drama stars Jeremy Pope as Ellis French, a troubled man who enlists after being rejected by his mother (Gabrielle Union). While in training, Ellis receives brutal abuse from his training sergeant (Bokeem Woodbine) and develops an attraction to one of his superiors (Raúl Castillo). The film’s cast also includes McCaul Lombardi and Aaron Dominguez.

“You have to put it in the script. If you put in the script – it will happen.”
This is Geena Davis’ sage advice to filmmakers when crafting stories aiming to incorporate inclusive storylines and characters.
“Nobody is going to second guess if it says the scene takes place at, say, ‘a police station which is 40 women,’ or if there’s a scene where ‘a crowd gathers, which is half female,’” continues the Oscar-winning actor and founder of the eponymous Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media.
“Specify what it is. You have to write in the script.”
That advice came to fruition in “The Seven Faces of Jane,” a surrealistic anthology film that held its world premiere at Geena Davis’ Bentonville Film Festival’s eighth edition last night in the quaint Arkansas city, home to Walmart’s global headquarters. The fest, founded and chaired by Davis, runs in-person through June...

The nominees list for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Board of Governors has been revealed before its June 6-10 balloting.
The candidates are hoping to fill the open seats on the 54-member board. Up to four candidates are set for the open seat at each each branch, which carries three governors with staggered terms per branch.
Board members who have termed out include Academy president David Rubin (from the casting directors branch), Jan Pascale (production designers), Mark Johnson (producers) and Nancy Utley (PR).
Candidates vying for a seat include actress Marlee Matlin, composer Hans Zimmer, and executive Toby Emmerich.
The slate faces some crucial tests once installed, including selecting a new Academy president and new CEO to replace outgoing Dawn Hudson. The Academy also must overcome perceptions created in a rocky year, with its Will Smith Oscars slap incident and the uproar over what categories would make it into the Oscars broadcast.

Tribeca Enterprises and Fortnite maker Epic Games have announced details for their joint effort to help filmmakers use Epic’s free Unreal Engine platform as a creative foundation.
The two companies first revealed their team-up in August. Today, they identified a roster of writers and directors whose work will be featured in a three-day “Writing in Unreal” event in New York next month. They also posted a schedule of feature presentations during the gathering, which is scheduled for November 16 to 18.
Director Darren Aronofsky and producer Effie T. Brown will serve as advisors to the participating teams, Tribeca and Epic said, offering direction and feedback.
Epic has been in the vanguard of popularizing the concept of the metaverse. Its real-time 3D platform has enabled the creation of a number of experiences and games and recently became embroiled in the company’s legal battle with Apple and Google over the tech giants’ app stores.
