Play Expo Blackpool, the much-loved retro gaming event born in the resort eight years ago, is returning on October 12 and 13 and rewarding the loyal support of its local visitors, by including wow-factor, never-before-seen Japanese arcade cabinets – a show-first to the Norcalympia Exhibition Centre, whilst evoking memories of the seaside arcade game’s heyday and times when the resort was the number one place to go for arcade game aficionados.
Whilst other attractions have pushed arcade games out of the limelight in Blackpool, the arcade game is very much in-vogue in Japan and Play Expo Blackpool visitors will be able to fully appreciate why. By working with Japanese partner, Japanarama, the expo organisers have secured a range of large-scale, modern-day rhythm, shooting and fighting cabinets that will bring back fond memories of arcade games of old, but with a modern twist. How do you find the notes to effectively and respectfully capture the emotions in a true-life story set against a terrible tragedy? That was the challenge facing composer Fernando Velazquez for "The Impossible." Reteaming with director J.A. Bayona after collaborating on "The Orphange," Velazquez rose to the challenge of honoring the survivors whose story inspired the movie, by writing a score to compliment the complex tides of feelings of a family torn apart by the deadly 2004 tsunami, and ultimately reunited once again. Today we have an exclusive stream of the first track from the soundtrack, "The Impossible Main Title." It sets up the overall tone and mood of the picture and score, and nicely introduces the motifs that will reoccur through the film. The score was recorded with the London Metropolitan Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios, but perhaps more importantly, the filmmakers were able to meet Maria Belon, whose story the movie is based around.

Tucson and Phoenix: Prepare to be rocked, shocked and defiled. Blasting its way into its third — and biggest — year on Sept. 18-25, the Arizona Underground Film Festival is a cacophonous concoction of angry transsexuals, bumbling hit men, slacker superheroes, living dolls, aliens, dead hookers, adventure-seeking blondes and other crazies.
This year the fest is screening 30 feature films, some of which are making their U.S. and even world debuts. The opening night film is the U.S. premiere of the German hit man comedy Snowman’s Land, directed by Tomasz Thomson, while closing the fest is the controversial and violent A Serbian Film by Srdjan Spasojevic, which you have to be over-18 to get into.
Don’t worry, there’s plenty of homebrewed films as well, such as Dead Hooker in a Trunk by Jen Soska & Sylvia Soska; Nude Nuns With Big Guns by Joseph Guzman; 1,001 Ways to Enjoy the...
