Emperor backer recently lost protection from its creditors.
Monaco-based Paul Breuls, founder and CEO of sales and finance outfit Corsan, has denied that the troubled Belgian company is teetering on the brink of bankruptcy.
This week, the Emperor, Killing Season and Third Person backer, lost protection from its creditors having previously been safeguarded through local law. On Monday, the commercial court in Antwerp concluded that the arrangement should be terminated immediately, citing the company’s restructuring plans as “neither clear nor credible”.
Speaking to Screen, Breuls has revealed that his lawyers are appealing the court decision and claims that Corsan can avoid bankruptcy. During the appeal process, he expects Corsan to be able to trade as normal and the protection from the company’s creditors to be re-instated.

Belgian financier of films including Third Person and Killing Season filed for protection from its creditors last month.
Antwerp-based financier, tax shelter specialist and production outfit Corsan has issued a press release expressing optimism about its ability to continue in business, after recently being granted legal protection from its creditors until October 31.
Silence and Third Person backer Corsan asked for protection from its creditors (who include Haacht Brewery) last month and the company is attemping to work out a restructuring plan with them.
The company’s troubles reportedly stem from investors not having received the promised tax certificates for the money they have invested in at least one of Corsan’s films.

Just last month, news surfaced that Martin Scorsese was finally going to shoot his long-gestating adaptation of of Silence, based on the novel by Shusako Endo. Financing had been secured Emmettt/Furla Films and Paul Breuls and his Corsan Films to allow production to begin in Taiwan in July of 2014, but the official start date was contingent on a cast. Now Variety has word that production has been greenlit for June 2014 instead, and The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield will be leading the film that also has Ken Watanabe attached to a role and will also take Scorsese to Cannes to secure international distribution. For those who haven't heard of this project before, the story is set in the 17th century and focuses on two Jesuit priests that face violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and to spread the gospel of Christianity. The period...

For years now, Martin Scorsese has put off an adaptation of Silence, based on the novel by Shusako Endo. At one time names like Daniel Day-Lewis and and Benicio del Toro were slated to start, but the project has been delayed on and off nearly every single year. But just this past January, there was word that he might finally be circling back to the project and shoot sometime in 2014. Now Deadline confirms that financing has been secured Emmettt/Furla Films and Paul Breuls and his Corsan Films to allow production to begin in Taiwan in July of 2014, but the actual start date is dependent on the cast that comes together. The project is supposedly moving very quickly, and plans even include a trip to Cannes for Scorsese when the film is ready to launch. Exclusive: Martin Scorsese will finally realize his long-held dream to direct Silence, an adaptation of the Shusaku Endo novel about 17th century Jesuits who risk their lives to bring Christianity to Japan. Financing for the film has been secured by Emmett/Furla Films and Paul Breuls and his Corsan Films. The plan is to shoot in Taiwan in July 2014, depending on cast, from a script by Jay Cocks and Scorsese. I’m told that things are moving fast on this and that they are all making plans for Scorsese to come to Cannes and launch the picture. Talks are underway with Graham King for his ownership stake in the script. Numerous sales companies have been vying to handle foreign rights, but that task will fall to Len Blavatnik and Stuart Ford, who’ll jointly handle foreign on the film for Emmett/Furla through their respective Axis Films and Im Global.

Crash director Paul Haggis just confirmed to Variety that Mila Kunis, Casey Affleck and James Franco are set to join Liam Neeson and Olivia Wilde in the leads of his romantic drama Third Person.
Haggis said:
These are complex characters in a challenging story, I’m thrilled we are attracting such as amazing cast.
Corsan CEO Paul Breuls who will produce the film alongside Haggis also said:
Third Person exemplifies the kind of film we want to make. Corsan’s ambition has always been to develop creative partnerships with great filmmakers and give them the space and support to create artistic yet highly commercial films.
Kunis, hot off the heels of global success of the crude stuffed-animal humor of Seth MacFarlane‘s Ted, plays one half of an estranged couple in New York, with Franco playing her partner in the piece.
The film follows three interlocking love stories of three couples in three cities.

A rescue plan has been hatched to save embattled Australian-uk feature Singularity from administration.
The proposal, discussed at a creditors meeting held last week in Brisbane, involves completing the film by June 30, which would trigger millions of dollars in government rebates allowing creditors to be re-paid.
About $1.5 million is owed to third party creditors although some internal claims remain outstanding. An initial creditors report from Worrells Solvency & Forensic Accountants initially estimated $15.13 million was owed to creditors however it is understood that the major portion of that relates to an investment vehicle which partially funded the production.
Contrarian Tax Unit.s Brett Thornquest, who is assisting the administrators, said: .We.re optimistic that we can find a path forward to get creditors paid, get the film finished and get it released . it.s in everyone.s interest to do that..
Creditors are continuing to explore financial options ahead of another meeting scheduled for mid-March.

When it comes to a pairing I never expected to see, Variety reports that Robert De Niro and John Travolta will star for Mark Steven Johnson in Killing Season, an action film scripted by Snow White and the Huntsman writer Evan Daugherty. The story is described as following De Niro‘s “American military veteran who has retreated to a remote cabin in the Appalachian Mountains, where he strikes up an unlikely friendship with a European tourist (Travolta) who’s actually a former Serbian soldier bent on revenge.” Schlock distributors Nu Image and Millennium will be handling the film, which begins shooting on January 16th.

Los Angeles, CA – Millennium Films, Corsan Pictures and FilmEngine will begin production January 16 on “Killing Season,” starring Robert De Niro and John Travolta. Mark Steven Johnson (“Ghost Rider,” “Daredevil”) will direct from a script by Evan Daugherty (“Snow White and the Huntsman”). “Killing Season” is an action movie set in the Appalachian Mountains about an American military veteran (De Niro) who has retreated to a remote cabin in the woods. When a rare visitor, a European tourist (Travolta), appears on the scene, the two men strike up an unlikely friendship. But in fact the visitor is a former Serbian soldier bent on revenge. What follows is a tense, action packed battle across some of America’s most forbidding landscape that proves the old adage: the purest form of war is one-on-one. Nu Image/Millennium is taking the lead on international sales at the American Film Market this week, in consultation with Corsan.

Paul Breuls, producer of The Devil's Double, the recent biopic about Saddam Hussein's son, Uday, made some curious comments regarding why he lobbied for French actress Ludivine Sagnier to play the role of Uday's hypersexual mistress, Sarrab. Breuls said: "The role is very demanding sexually and it's difficult to find actresses who are willing to take that leap into the sexual unknown, especially in the states or in England. Ludivine Sagnier (who appeared topless in 2003's Swimming Pool) is someone who made our first short list because she's done some of the most sensual work in French film. She's uninhibited, and she's an excellent actress to boot." First off, regarding American actresses, when I think of Kim Basinger in 9 1/2 Weeks, Lisa Bonet in Angel Heart, and Chloe Sevigny in The Brown Bunny, just to name a few, I don't [...]...

British actor Mem Ferda (Legacy) has provided some gory details on his upcoming film, The Devil's Double. To be released by Lionsgate in theatres July 27th, 2011, The Devil's Double is described both as biopic and as a gangland thriller, set in the harsh desert climes of Baghdad.
At recent showings, The Devil's Double has shocked audiences with a specific scene involving a brutal slaying, at a relaxing garden party. Ferda's character Kamel Hannah, a real life bodyguard of Saddam Hussein, upset Uday, Hussein's eldest son. And before you can shield your eyes, Hannah is disemboweled on the big screen, in graphic splashes of blood red.
Ferda says of the scene: "It was one of the most difficult scenes of my life...one minute I’m standing drunk on top of a table, laughing maniacally and spraying machine gun fire...the next moment my guts are spilled all over the place...
