During the Halloween season last year, it was announced that Damian Lewis, whose credits include Billions, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Homeland, and Dreamcatcher, will be playing two roles in the supernatural black comedy The Radleys. They include Kelly Macdonald (Operation Mincemeat), Harry Baxendale (Holmes & Watson), Bo Bragason (The Ballad of Renegade Nell), Sophia Di Martino (Loki), and Shaun Parkes (Small Axe).
Euros Lyn (Heartstopper) is directing The Radleys, which has been written by Talitha Stevenson and is based on a novel by Matt Haig (pick up a copy Here). Set in a quiet, suburban English town, the film charts the story of the Radleys, who to their neighbours are as ordinary as they come. Taskmaster was originally a hard sell. Channel execs worried that audiences would be bored by the cast not changing every episode. “People didn’t think viewers would tune in the next week to see the same comedians,” creator Alex Horne told Chortle, “we had to persuade them it was more like a sitcom than a panel show. Because actually, people got to know each contestant.”
Casting Taskmaster – in which five comedians compete in absurd challenges, wrangled by Alex Horne for the approval of Greg Davies – like a sitcom was one of the show’s many masterstrokes. If task-setting is all about encouraging a range of approaches (it’d be dull if everybody beautifully destroyed a cake in the same way) then the same goes for the series cast. Different personalities, from cool customers to chaos merchants, batty enthusiasts, neurotic overachievers, and ‘let’s fuck it all off’ rebels are required to clash and bond.

All through the run-up to series eight of Inside No. 9, audiences were told to expect an episode called ‘Hold on Tight!’, set on a No.9 bus. Inside No. 9 is an anthology show, in which writer-actors Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith take on different roles in each self-contained episode, alongside an impressive array of guest stars. ‘Hold on Tight!’, press were told, would be an homage to 1970s comedy On the Buses, and would feature guest star Robin Askwith, who is best known for his ‘cheeky’ 1970s sex comedy roles. Photos were released of Askwith, Pemberton and Shearsmith in costume next to a red London bus, and a movie-style poster was made. Clips of Pemberton and Shearsmith in their bus conductor costumes were included in the series eight trailer.

It was the big question. When the Junior Taskmaster spin-off was announced back in March with new hosts welcoming the nation’s children to complete a series of absurd and pointless challenges, who would be sitting in the golden thrones? A new Taskmaster was required, along with a new Taskmaster’s assistant. One had to be masterful and imperious, the other detail-oriented and servile, and crucially, they both had to be good with kids.
The answer: series nine and 11 contestants Rose Matafeo and Mike Wozniak! Matafeo will be taking the Junior Taskmaster role scoring the young contestants’ efforts, with Wozniak providing admin-based support in the studio and on-site child wrangling during tasks as the Junior Taskmaster’s Assistant.
Matafeo came second in her series of Taskmaster, in which she competed against winner Ed Gamble (now the host of the show’s official podcast), and fellow not-winners David Baddiel, Katy Wix and Jo Brand.

Comedian Jordan Gray has responded to the viewers who complained to Ofcom after she stripped naked on Channel 4 as part of the revival of Friday Night Live.
The Eighties comedy series returned for a one-off episode on 21 October as part of the channel’s 40th anniversary celebrations.
Ben Elton was back as the host, along with former Friday Night Live cast members Harry Enfield, Jo Brand and Julian Clary.
A number of new comedians also appeared on the show, including Gray.
Gray, who is trans, performed a rendition of the song “Better than You” from her hit Edinburgh Fringe show Is It A Bird?.
At the end of the song, Gray shouted out: “The best thing about live TV is I can do stupid stuff like this…”
After improvising on the keyboard, she then ran across the stage and stripped completely naked to applause and cheers from the audience,...

Damian Lewis, whose credits include Billions, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Homeland, and Dreamcatcher, has signed on to play two roles in the supernatural black comedy The Radleys, which is set to be directed by Euros Lyn (Heartstopper). Based on a novel by Matt Haig (pick up a copy Here), The Radleys has the following synopsis:
The Radleys are an ordinary family, or at least that’s what the neighbours think, no one would suspect that behind all of this, the Radleys hold a dark secret…they are vampires. Only parents Helen and Peter (Lewis) know about the family’s true nature. They are ‘abstainers’, vampires who choose not to drink blood despite their natural cravings. Their teenagers, vegan Clara and lovesick Rowan, have no idea, until one evening Clara is attacked by a boy in her class and her bloodthirsty instincts take over, forcing her parents to finally reveal the truth.

Ben Elton is bringing back Friday Night Live for a one-off special.
Airing from 1985 to 1988, the Channel 4 series – originally called Saturday Live – was known for catapulting comedians such as Harry Enfield, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie to stardom.
Jo Brand’s first ever TV appearance came on the show, which featured a mix of stand-up comedy and topical sketches. Episodes were broadcast live, but featured a small amount of pre-recorded material as well.
On Thursday 6 October, Channel 4 announced that the show would be returning in October for a special episode as part of the channel’s 40th anniversary celebrations.
Elton will be back at the helm, along with former cast members Enfield, Brand and Julian Clary.
They will be joined by comics including Rosie Jones, Mawaan Rizwan, Jordan Gray, Ronni Ancona and Sam Campbell. Self Esteem will also perform.

Last month, Mock The Week was cancelled after 17 years on air. The satirical comedy was only one of a flurry of modern panel shows featuring teams of comedians, spawning from the format used in Have I Got News For You that emerged during the nineties and noughties. Taking cues from long-running Hignfy which hit TV screens in 1990, popular series such as Never Mind the Buzzcocks and the anarchic, absurd Shooting Stars were followed by the likes of Qi, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Would I Lie To You?, Celebrity Juice and, of course, Mock The Week. But with ratings plummeting and cancellations abounding, is it high time the genre called it a day?
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
These shows were initially a great way to finish off your evening after a long hard day at school or work, just like a late night chat show helps to wind our American friends down after the watershed.

WestEnd Films has launched a global sales campaign for Guillem Morales’ (“The Miniaturist”) revenge thriller “The Duchess of Malfi,” produced by Miriam Segal’s Good Films Collective (“Postcard Killings”). Based on John Webster’s classic Jacobean play, the feature adaptation was penned by Luke Garrett (“Ruby Strangelove Young Witch”).
Casting for the period drama is led by BAFTA-nominees Morfydd Clark (“Saint Maud”) and Sam Riley (“Control”) with BIFA-nominee Dominic Cooper (“Preacher”). Equally impressive is the film’s behind-the-scenes lineup, including Academy Award-nominated DoP Pawel Edelman (“The Pianist”), BAFTA-nominated costume designer Carlo Poggioli (“Cold Mountain”), and Editor Joe Randall-Cutler (“I Hate Suzie”). Shooting will begin in November in Italy, with WestEnd set to present the film at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival virtual market.

"It was like you were singing... just to me." Mental illness, Morrissey and guinea pigs. Vega Baby US has released a new trailer for the indie dark comedy coming-of-age film The More You Ignore Me, a spunky 80s flick from England that already opened there a few years ago. Adapted from Jo Brand's novel and set to the songs of The Smiths, The More You Ignore Me is a darkly funny coming-of-age story of dysfunctional family life in the 1980s. The film focuses on Gina, a young mother, whose efforts to be a loving mother & wife are undermined by her declining mental health. Things deteriorate once she develops an obsession with the local weatherman, which leads to an admission to the nearby psychiatric hospital. Starring Sheridan Smith as Gina and Ella Hunt (from Anna and the Apocalypse), with Mark Addy, Sally Phillips, Sheila Hancock, and Jo Brand. This looks enjoyable,...

Natalie Bailey with her Emmy.
Natalie Bailey was set to shoot feature comedy Sumo in South Africa when the pandemic struck, which turned out to be a blessing as she was then asked to serve as set-up director on Aquarius Films’ Sbs miniseries The Unusual Suspects.
The Melbourne-based director, who shot isolation comedy Retrograde for the ABC, readily agreed. She had long wanted to make a 4-parter for Sbs and she was intrigued by the story of immigrants working in Sydney’s affluent Eastern suburbs with strong female characters.
Scripted by Jessica Redenbach, Roger Monk and Vonne Patiag, the plot revolves around the theft of a $10 million necklace from self-made Filipino businesswoman Roxanne Waters’ home during her twins’ birthday party. The suspects include socialite Sara Beasley whose life is crumbling fast, and her long-suffering nanny, Evie De La Rosa, a godmother for other Filipino domestic workers.
Casting is underway led by casting director Kirsty McGregor,...

Exclusive: Himesh Patel has been cast opposite Hugh Laurie in Armando Iannucci’s HBO space comedy Avenue 5.
Created by Iannucci, Avenue 5 is a space tourism comedy set 40 years in the future when the solar system is everyone’s oyster. With Hugh Laurie as the Captain, nothing can go wrong.
Patel will play Jordan Hatwal, a young stand-up who is just starting out. When he’s offered an eight-week residency on Judd Galaxy’s inaugural luxury cruise around Saturn, he jumps at the chance to declare himself “the Funniest Man in the Universe.” Unfortunately for him, comedy clubs in space famously have no atmosphere. And he doesn’t quite have enough material to last the journey. And his fragile self-confidence means it might not be long before he’s heckling himself. He’s had a few bad gigs in his time, but nothing that could possibly prepare him for this.

Exclusive: Veep pair Chris Addison and Will Smith have reunited to create a transatlantic fantasy detective series, Warlock Holmes (w/t).
The British multihyphenates are writing the series, which is described as Princess Bride-meets-Game of Thrones. The project already has a British broadcaster lined up and I hear that the project has been the talk of La as it is being pitched to U.S. broadcasters.

Sheridan Smith is great in Brand’s 80s-set story, about a Moz-mad teen and her mentally unwell mum
There’s a terrific warmth and strength to this good-natured, big-hearted British comedy, written for the screen by Jo Brand, who has adapted her own 2009 novel. It is a bit rough around the edges at times, with some pretty broad dramatic effects, but the narrative motor keeps humming and the sheer force of sympathy drives it along.
It tackles difficult themes. It is set in the 1980s and Ella Hunt plays Alice, a lonely teenager who, in a blinding flash while watching Top of the Pops, has conceived an obsessive love for Morrissey of the Smiths. But she is all too well aware that her mum Gina (played with full-throttle commitment by Sheridan Smith) is prone to psychotic episodes, after postnatal depression when Alice was born, and that one of the most...

Gina’s mental illness reaches new heights when her unhealthy obsession with the local weatherman intensifies, and she decides to climb naked on his roof holding Alice’s pet guinea pig.
