In a certain light, all filmmakers–even the most successful–are con artists as heart, convincing investors, a crew, and performers to go along for the ride with a tremendous amount of uncertainty. Martha Shane’s enlightening documentary Narrowsburg looks at a couple’s desire to start a “Sundance of the East,” very likely without having ever attended Sundance and fully understanding the amount of work that it takes. There are film festivals like this, and in the interest of full disclosure yours truly is the artistic director of a regional film festival and every year we struggle to make sure our filmmakers have realistic expectations for how things will go. The Narrowsburg International Independent Film Festival, and the film the town produced, Four Deadly Reasons, is a textbook study in what can go wrong when you prey on the expectations of small-town residents who get sucked in by a snake oil salesman.

There’s a certain kind of charm that comes from the kind of potentially mob-affiliated working class that you find in pockets of neighborhoods at the heart of the boxing drama Back in the Day. Written by and starring William DeMeo as Anthony, a kid from Brooklyn, he’s born to an Italian mother Mary (Annabella Sciorra) and Puerto Rican dad Jose (Manny Perez). He’s often the subject of jokes, adding an extra barrier of adversity that fuels his rage from launching firecrackers into a racist neighbor’s window to beating up a neighborhood pedophile — and, boy, can he punch. After his mother dies, young Anthony (played as teen as Christian DeMeo) is soon taken under the wing of powerful mob bosses (Michael Madsen and Alec Baldwin) who support his endeavors to train as an armature boxer under Eddie ‘Rocks’ Trevor (Danny Glover).

One of the perks of backing Vinegar Syndrome’s move into video on demand (the now-launched Exploitation.TV) was a double bill limited edition DVD of Len Anthony’s Murderous Intent and Fright House, offered only to those who, like me, backed the Indiegogo campaign. Now I’d never heard of either movie. But given the fact that – at least of as far the Nerdly team are concerned – Vinegar Syndrome can do no wrong. No matter how obscure or how bizarre the films, there’s always something interesting or intriguing about the titles they choose to release… whether that be sex, violence or (as in the case of these two Len Anthony movies) sheer insanity!

In one scene of Once Upon a Time in Brooklyn, a woman seduces her boyfriend by playing him a lite-r&B song she recorded. The film itself also comes across as a demo for director-writer Paul Borghese and actor-writer William DeMeo's talents rather than art to be enjoyed on its own merits. The cinematography shows a fine eye for light and color, but the film's take on the gangster genre seems like slumming. The script jumps back and forth in time, using two separate voiceovers to fill in details that a better screenplay could show, rather than talk about. Bobby Baldano (DeMeo) is considered a loser by his father (Armand Assante), a legitimate businessman who works in the construction industry. At the opening, Bobby has just been released from jail, and he wastes no time re-involvi...
