The gloves came off on The Daily Show on Monday night, as host Jon Stewart excoriated the news media for its overly extensive and, at times, incredibly dramatic coverage of former President Donald Trump’s New York criminal trial.
In the segment, titled “America’s Most Tremendously Wanted,” Stewart began by saying that “this trial will obviously be a test of the fairness of the American legal system. But it’s also a test that of the media’s ability to cover Donald Trump in a responsible way, a task they have acknowledged that they’ve performed poorly in the past.”
Stewart then proceeded to show clips of somber media self-reflection — from the likes of former CNN host Brian Stelter, MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace and Rachel Maddow — discussing the need to move away from the often breathless, speculative and needless coverage that Trump received during his term as president.
“So brave.

CNN anchor Kate Bolduan got an interesting new job in 2022 when she was named the anchor of “5 Things,” a quick-hit open-the-day summary of top stories that was made available for streaming audiences. Two years later, she appears poised to get it again.
Bolduan will lead a test run of “5 Things” starting Monday on CNN Max, the live-streamed news service available on Max, the streaming venue backed by corporate parent Warner Bros. Discovery. The program’s reappearance after a long absence marks the latest chapter in a concept that many at the news outlet seem to love, but just can’t figure out how to transform into a sustainable video franchise. CNN already operates a podcast and newsletter tied to the format.
CNN has reason to try “5 Things” anew. It was one of the more popular offerings made available on CNN+, an ambitious but short-lived subscription-based streaming service launched in 2022 in...

Former federal prosecutor Andrew Weissmann stated that former President Donald Trump could face prison time if he ends up being convicted of falsifying business records in his New York hush money trial.
Trump has been charged with 34 felony counts in connection to with a scheme to falsify business records to cover up hush money payments made to conceal an alleged affair with adult film actress Stormy Daniels during the closing weeks of the 2016 presidential campaign. This case is going to trial on April 15.
“He could be looking at the jail,” Weissmann told CNN host Wolf Blitzer. “This is one where [Judge Juan Merchan]—I think—is going to be looking at the rule of law to see how other people were treated, other people with a similar criminal background. I think this is an area where Donald Trump’s pretrial behavior is going to be relevant.”

On Monday, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that states could not remove Donald Trump from their ballots using the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause.
However, the Supreme Court justices were divided about how broadly this decision would end up sweeping. A five-to-four majority wrote that no state could exclude a federal candidate from any ballot – but four justices argued that the court should have kept its opinion limited.
A five-justice majority – Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh – wrote that states cannot remove any federal officer from the ballot, especially the president, unless Congress first passes legislation.
“We conclude that States may disqualify persons holding or attempting to hold state office. But States have no power under the Constitution to enforce Section 3 with respect to federal offices, especially the Presidency,” these justices said.

The suspense this Super Tuesday may be in watching how all of the networks try to make the night suspenseful.
Some 16 states and one territory will vote: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia. A Democratic caucus also is being held in American Samoa, and Iowa Democrats also will reveal their results.
But with Joe Biden and Donald Trump on their way to a rematch in the 2024 presidential election, coverage Tuesday will focus on margins of victory, when each candidate will clinch their nomination and what’s next from now until Election Day. There also will be attention to down-ballot races, including California’s Senate primary to fill the seat long held by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-ca).

Digital media executive Alex MacCallum, who left CNN after a major streaming product she helped build was scuttled, has returned to the news outlet to help build some more.
McCallum, who exited CNN in June of 2022 when she was interim chief digital officer, has been named executive vice president of digital products and services, and will be charged with developing new concepts to attract digital audiences — a key business objective as more of CNN’s cable subscribers find new broadband, social and mobile platforms where they can gain information and knowledge.

In the new episode of Saturday Night Live, former Rep. George Santos (R-New York) was satirized for his expulsion from Congress.
The skit included a mock press conference and a musical performance.
The cold open started with an announcement about a breaking news press conference from the Capitol delivered by Sarah Sherman’s portrayal of CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.
The scene shifted to Santos, played by Bowen Yang, who called the press conference on the day that followed his expulsion.
Yang’s character stated, “This entire country has been bullying me just because I am a proud gay thief,” a reference to the House Ethics Committee’s discovery last month, which revealed that Santos had unlawfully used campaign funds for personal benefit and deceived donors.
Santos has pleaded not guilty to 23 criminal counts on the allegations that he misled donors, unlawfully received unemployment benefits and charged his donors’ credit cards without authorization.

Much of America breathed a sigh of relief as former U.S. Representative George Santos was expelled from Congress this week. As the list of alleged crimes grew to the point that not even a slim GOP majority was worth keeping him around for, there’s only one person who lost more than Santos himself: Bowen Yang. Because Saturday Night Live‘s cold open this week might be the last time Yang gets to play the cartoonishly dishonest congressperson.
The sketch opens with Wolf Blitzer as played by Sarah Sherman, who gets some sharp digs in at Elon Musk before throwing to a press conference.

The latest episode of “Saturday Night Live” opened with Bowen Yang’s George Santos holding one last press conference before launching into a new rendition of Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind,” complete with comparisons to an “evil Forrest Gump.”
The “SNL” cold open began with Sarah Sherman appearing as Wolf Blitzer to sustained applause from the audience before throwing to Yang’s Santos at an impromptu press conference that he himself called.
“This entire country has been bullying me just because I’m a proud, gay thief,” Yang said in a nod to Santos’ ouster from the House of Representatives this week following an investigation by the House Ethics Committee.
When asked why he was holding this press conference, Yang’s Santos replied, “Well America needs closure. One of their favorite sons, me, has been cut down in the prime of his life at 17-years-old.”

Saturday Night Live went with the big political news of the week for its cold open, giving a musical send-off to now expelled fabulist congressman George Santos.
Bowen Yang plays Santos as a victimized con man, singing a new rendition of Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind.”
Goodbye, Congress queen, they’ll never know anything about me at all because I lied about everything in my life. Then I took a tragic fall. They crawled out of the woodwork. They whispered, ‘He used my donations for Botox, and I said, it was filler, slut!‘
Santos was ousted Friday in a bipartisan vote of the House of Representatives, following the release of a devastating Ethics Committee report that accused him of stealing campaign funds for personal expenses, including spa treatments and OnlyFans.

Update: The White House is blasting Fox News again, this time over comments that one of its opinion hosts, Mark Levin, made on his radio show.
Levin attacked CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer and other network personalities over the coverage of the Israel-Hamas war, claiming that the network was filled with “a lot of self-hating Jews.” He said that Blitzer’s parents “weren’t victims in one way or another in the Holocaust, and certainly his family comes out of that background, but you wouldn’t know it.” He also said that Blitzer “wants Israel to die.”
Blitzer’s parents, David and Cesia, survived the Auschwitz concentration camp, and the CNN anchor has covered his background in a network documentary.

At least one of the big companies that distribute CNN via cable or satellite is unnerved by how closely the company’s new live-streaming service looks like its TV network.
Big satellite distributor DirecTV has let executives at Warner Bros. Discovery know via letter that its executives believe the similarities between the two products violate the carriage contract between the two companies, according to a person familiar with the matter. The new CNN streaming service, CNN Max, just launched last week and includes many of programs that run on linear CNN, including “CNN This Morning,” “The Lead With Jake Tapper” and “Anderson Cooper 360.”
The New York Times previously reported the contretemps between DirecTV and Warner Bros. Discovery.
“Wbd maintains strong and meaningful relationships with our affiliate partners. Our partners are aware of and understand our rationale with Max, which is to reach new audiences,” Warner Bros. Discovery said in a statement.

Other shows come from CNN International, including State of the Race with Kasie Hunt, which is debuting on Wednesday as well, and One World, with Bianna Golodryga joining Zain Asher as anchor. CNN’s new streaming product is set to look an awful lot like its familiar cable network.
CNN Max, which debuted Wednesday, has been touted as a way to get news giant’s content out to a increasing number of cord-cutters and consumers who no longer view cable as their primary way to get video entertainment and information. And parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, in the belief, perhaps, that a streaming subscription is just as good as one to a cable or satellite service, is making the bulk of its linear lineup available to the broadband crowd.
The weekday schedule of CNN Max features several new hours led by anchors such as Jim Acosta, Fredricka Whitfield, Rahel Solomon and Jim Scuitto. But a significant chunk of the service is built on CNN’s linear morning, late-afternoon and primetime schedule. When all is said and done, Max viewers will be able...

On Thursday, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) called out former President Donald Trump in particularly harsh terms.
“Stop hiding behind your… failed social media site,” he told CNN.
The second debate will be held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California on Wednesday. As Christie and the other 2024 Republican presidential candidates prepare, Trump has made it clear he will not attend the second debate, as he didn’t with the first.
In an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Christie stated that Trump needs to stop being a coward and show up to the debates if he has anything to say.
These remarks came shortly after Trump blasted Christie as a “grifter” on Truth Social. Trump trolled Christie over the “beachgate” scandal, where images of a relaxed Christie on the beach in 2017, while beaches were legally closed due to state government shutdown.

Warner Bros. Discovery aims to make all of the sporting events it has developed over the years for cable crowds available to streamers at the same time — so long as they are willing to pay extra for the privilege.

And so, starting Oct. 5, the company will launch a new “Bleacher Report” add-on package to Max. The offering will also include access to TNT’s popular “Inside the NBA” studio program and live international events such as “24 Hours of Le Mans.” Warner Bros. CNN, whose brief foray into subscription streaming was snuffed out shortly after the close of the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger in April 2022, is officially getting real estate on Max.
A new offering, CNN Max, will be added to the streaming service in what Warner Bros. Discovery called an “open beta” on September 27. It will consist of a 24/7 stream pulled from the news network’s U.S. and international feeds, with a sprinkling of original fare, with user feedback welcomed. For many reasons, some having to do with contracts with pay-tv operators, it won’t be a full-over-the top version of linear CNN, and certain talent and new shows like the new 9 p.m. hour hosted by Kaitlan Collins will not be in the mix.
Wbd CEO David Zaslav hinted at the new venture during the company’s quarterly earnings call several weeks ago, saying news and sports make SVOD platforms “come alive.

CNN anchor Laura Coates has moved to CAA for representation, a move that could signal a new era of influence for the talent-agency giant at the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed news outlet.
In a broad overhaul of CNN’s schedule, Coates was recently named to anchor a new 11 p.m. hour at CNN, “Laura Coates Live,” where she will follow Abby Philip, who will hold forth at 10. CAA also represents Erin Burnett, who anchors CNN’s 7 p.m. hour. All told, CAA will represent two of five of the anchors who appear during CNN’s schedule between 7 p.m. to midnight., which usually represent some of the network’s most-watched hours.
In years past, CNN’s primetime was dominated by rival agency UTA, which continues to have a strong roster at CNN. The agency represents Philip — who left CNN for UTA — as well as Anderson Cooper, Jake Tapper, Don Lemon and Alisyn Camerota.

The sixth "Mission: Impossible" film, "Fallout," has the most fun toying with its audience. The first time it does so is one of the best surprises I've ever experienced in a movie.
The set-up: Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his Impossible Mission Force (Imf) team fail to stop a terrorist group called the Apostles from stealing three plutonium cores. So, they capture nuclear physicist Nils Delbruuk (Kristoffer Joner), a member of the Apostles.
Cut to two weeks later, with Ethan and Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) standing in a hospital. Delbruuk is handcuffed to a bed while the room's TV blasts CNN. Newscaster Wolf Blitzer (as himself) is reporting how the world's three holiest cities — Rome, Jerusalem, and Mecca — have been destroyed, with footage from the nuked cities included. Have our heroes really failed this badly? Delbruuk thinks so.

One notable thing about the headlines coming out of CNN in recent weeks is something they don’t include: news about CNN itself.
Since the exit of former chief Chris Licht in June after a tenure marked by tumult and unwanted publicity, the gossip mill around the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed news outlet has ceased its once-dependable roar. There are no leaks about what happened at CNN’s morning editorial meeting, or chatter about how current leaders Amy Entelis, Virginia Moseley and Eric Sherling talk (or don’t) to the staff. There is even less hubbub about David Leavy, the longtime consigliere who was recently installed to oversee business affairs. and is a longtime consigliere to Warner Bros. Discovery honcho David Zaslav,
People familiar with the network say there is a sense of “relief” within its ranks. It won’t last for very long.
To be sure, CNN still has work to do.

Updated: Networks scrambled to cover the rebellion in Russia by initially drawing heavily on social media images, foreign policy analysts and correspondents in other countries, while media presence in Moscow has been limited.
Russian President Vladimir Putin faced an uprising from mercenary chief Yevgeniy Prigozhin, with reports that he has taken control of the city of Rostov-on-Don and that the insurrection was on its way to Moscow. Hours later, Prigozhin said that his forces were stopping and turning back from the city and headed to field camps. Kremlin’s spokesman later told reporters that Prigozhin would go to Belarus and a criminal case against him would be dropped.
The apparent end of the revolt followed a tumultuous and often confusing 24 hours.
Viewers on Saturday woke up to images of Putin declaring that he would crush the rebellion and that Prigozhin was guilty of treason. He said that those who prepared...

Responding to a Tuesday report that CNN’s ratings are dropping below Newsmax, Megyn Kelly called the news network’s current predicament “a true existential crisis,” targeted former CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker as “the grim reaper” and slammed its slate of anchors as “Trump haters.”
She did, however, spare some kind words for Jake Tapper, who she said “at least tries to be fair.”
“I know people don’t agree with me, but that’s how I see him,” she said.
The segment of Tuesday’s episode of “The Megyn Kelly Show” came as Kelly and her pair of guests, The Federalist editor Emily Jashinsky and Washington Free Beacon editor-in-chief Eliana Johnson, responded to The Daily Beasts reporting on CNN that found “last week, the cable news pioneer suffered its lowest-rated week since June 2015, averaging just 429,000 total daily viewers from Monday-Friday.”
“CNN was also down double digits compared to...

Exclusive and Updated: Brittney Griner will attend tonight’s White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, which draws a list of sports and entertainment celebrities, media figures and politicos.
The WNBA star and Olympic gold medalist, whose arrest and detention in Russia last year led to a high stakes State Department diplomatic effort to secure her release, will be a guest of CBS News, per the network. She will attend along with her wife, Cherelle.
In her speech, Tamara Keith, the president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, plans to speak about the current detention of another figure in Russia: The Wall Street Journal’s Evan Gershkovich, who has been held since last month. Members of his family are expected at the event. Griner spoke to reporters earlier this week about his arrest. “No one should be in those conditions, hands down,” she said, per The New York Times.

Kate Bolduan’s next shift on CNN hasn’t started quite yet, but she’s acting as if it has. A group of cameras is flocking around the news anchor in a New York studio that has recently been updated, and she presses producers to let her rehearse a story she needs to have mastered by the time she gets on air. “We don’t want to get this half right,” she tells those listening to her.
Neither does the news network.
Bolduan and five of her on-air colleagues, along with dozens of crew members and producers working in New York, Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, are taking part in a major TV-news experiment that is going to play out each weekday for the foreseeable future at CNN. The question the Warner Bros. Discovery network is trying to solve: How to keep viewers watching TV news when they have video...

“Saturday Night Live” might know its audience a little too well. Speculating in a mock commercial on Saturday that the Manhattan D.A.’s case against Donald Trump isn’t as airtight as it could be, the long-running sketch comedy series on NBC leveled with its viewers, joking that there’s a new meditation news app for people “whose entire personality is hating Donald Trump.” It’s called CNZen.
Host Molly Shannon even suited up as renowned New York Times reporter, CNN analyst and Trump critic Maggie Haberman to provide indictment-inspired Asmr for total relaxation through trying times.
“These days, it’s hard not to feel stressed out and overwhelmed. Sure, Trump got indicted. But now everyone says the case against him is weak and that he’ll never serve any jail time. As someone whose entire personality is hating Donald Trump, you need more,” the commercial began with cast member Ego Nwodim as narrator.

Former Vice President Mike Pence sat down with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer Thursday night to discuss the indictment leveled against his old boss Donald Trump. Despite the bad blood between Trump and Pence, the former VP quickly jumped to defend Trump’s position.
“I think the unprecedented indictment of a former president of the United States on a campaign finance issue is an outrage,” Pence said. To millions of Americans “this will appear as nothing more than a political prosecution,” he added.
Mike Pence calls indictment against Trump an "outrage" pic.

The New York Times reported, “Trump is expected to turn himself in on Tuesday for arraignment on the indictment in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, according to one of his lawyers, Susan R. Necheles.” CNN confirmed that timing.
