Box Office: 'Bangkok' leads slow weekend

By Franck Tabouring

Weekend of September 5 – 7, 2008

Nicholas Cage’s latest action vehicle “Bangkok Dangerous” topped the North American box office this weekend with $7.8 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Danny and Oxide Pang’s remake ended the three-week reign of DreamWorks’ “Tropic Thunder,” leading an incredibly slow weekend as the only nationwide release. In the film, Cage stars as a lonely hit man who travels to Bangkok and falls in love with a local woman.

Ben Stiller’s action comedy closely followed at No. 2, earning $7.5 million and reaching a domestic total of $96.8 million after four weeks in release. With Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. in the lead roles, the flick centers on a group of actors as they fight for survival in a dangerous jungle.

Meanwhile, “The House Bunny” climbed back up to No. 3, collecting $5.9 million. Starring Anna Faris as a former Playboy bunny who

Black Challenges Brolin To 'Pony Up' For Cancer

6 September 2008 6:58 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Funnyman Jack Black took celebrities taking donation calls at Friday night's Stand Up 2 Cancer telethon in America to task - by demanding they phone each other with pledges.

The Tropic Thunder star admitted he has watched celebrity telethons as a cynic in the past - and he wanted to make sure this TV special would be a big winner.

He said, "You know that if one of those lucky so-and-so's donated two per cent of what they made, we could all go back to (TV show) Project Runway."

He then tackled actor Josh Brolin, who was in the middle of a pledge call and ordered him to put the phone down, yelling, "Hang up the freaking phone!"

Black then told Brolin to call comedienne Ellen DeGeneres, who was seated a few desks away from the movie star on the Kodak Theatre stage, adding, "Make a pledge. What did you make on the Coen Brothers (film - No Country For Old Men)?"

Black then turned to the cameras and assured the viewers watching the show, "I'm gonna make these gravy trainers pony up."

'School of Rock 2: America Rocks' Probably Not Happening

5 September 2008 11:33 PM, PDT | From Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news

"School of Rock 2: America Rocks" might never see the big screen after all. Reporting on the matter, First Showing claimed that "The School of Rock" director Richard Linklater has confessed on the slim possibility of the sequel to be happening.

At the "Me and Orson Welles" world premiere in 2008 Toronto International Film Festival, the Academy Award-nominated director further hinted that the words of him being attached to the sequel are most likely to be a false one since his involvement has yet to be confirmed. In fact, he revealed that he had been contacted by the studio about the plan for sequel only once and wasn't sure whether he would take the project.

Earlier, it has been reported that "America Rocks" is scripted by the original writer Mike White. This time, the flick will follow Dewey Finn, originally starred by Jack Black, once again as he leads a group

'Stand Up to Cancer' Brought Stars Together for Charity

5 September 2008 9:15 PM, PDT | From Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news

Celebrities have turned up at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre on Friday, September 5 to attend the one of the most star-studded charity events this year, "Stand Up to Cancer". Those ranging from actors like Jennifer Garner, singers like Sheryl Crow to politicians such as Barack Obama showed their support for the televised event that is aired simultaneously on NBC, ABC and CBS.

Before the show starts, producer Laura Ziskin who is also a cancer survivor said, "This is an absolutely historic night, thanks to the unbelievable generosity of the three networks." She then threw packets of Kleenex to the crowd while saying, "We hope we're going to make you laugh, and I know we're going to make you cry, so I have some party favors."

In the plight of statistics showing that someone dies of cancer every minute in the U.S., some of the celebrities such as Mandy Moore, Christina Ricci,

New 'Ghostbusters' Movie More than Just a Rumor

4 September 2008 8:50 PM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Well, in 1989 we saw the release of Batman, The Little Mermaid and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. In 2008 we had The Dark Knight, Indiana Jones and the Nuked Fridge and The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning so it only seems appropriate we go back to the well one more time and bring back Ghostbusters since '89 was the last time we saw the protoplasmic ghost hunters on the big screen. Variety has done a little digging into a story that started at E! when Dan Aykroyd gave the following interview: The two writers he refers to are "The Office" co-exec producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky and Variety seems to think the new film won't exactly be a Ghostbusters 3 as much as it will be a jumping off point for a new group to take over busting duties. That said it is believed original castmembers Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd

The Light of the Green Lantern -- Conceptually, Anyway

3 September 2008 4:32 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

The Green Lantern movie seems to be creeping very slowly to the pre-production line, but at least it isn't dead. You probably remember that we had a tiny update back in June that it was happily shaping up into a proper origin movie, rather than a slapstick version starring Jack Black. Now, courtesy of illustrator Brian Murray, comes concept art he created for scriptwriter (and potential director) Greg Berlanti. This art helped seal the deal, and win the franchise for Berlanti Television. A glance through the gallery below tells you why -- it's exciting and cinematic, the kind of thing your mind starts filling in and speeding up. If this is what is floating around at Warner Bros, Green Lantern could be shaping up to be something on par with Iron Man. But my desperation to talk about another DC character other than Batman may be showing. The diehard Lantern

Cruise Looking For Comedic Roles

1 September 2008 3:23 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Tom Cruise is keen to trade in his screen legacy as an action hero for more comedic roles after making a cameo appearance in new war comedy Tropic Thunder.

The Hollywood icon is unrecognisable as a chubby, balding movie executive in the new Ben Stiller film - featuring Stiller alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black.

And Cruise admits the role was an unexpected inspiration to make movie audiences laugh.

He says, "Well, I'm always looking for something new, and Ben's (Stiller) movie is hilarious. He and I are old friends, and he is a really good director, so originally I said I'd do it just for friendship. But it turned out great.

"I actually love comedy, and I did it in Risky Business, so I'll do more if it presents itself."

Tropic Thunder Still On Top At U.S. Box Office

31 August 2008 6:44 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Ben Stiller's war comedy Tropic Thunder has retained its grip on the top of the U.S. box office, after earning an impressive $11.5 million (GBP6.2million) during its third week of release.

The comedy - which features Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise - beat out new futuristic thriller, Babylon A.D. starring Vin Diesel - which grossed $9.7 million (GBP5.2million) in its first week of release, coming in second place.

The Dark Knight moved up a spot from last weekend (beg22Aug08), to number three, taking in an additional $8.75 million (GBP4.73million).

The Batman film now boasts total takings of $502.4 million (GBP271.6million) in its four weeks - becoming the second movie in Hollywood history to top $500 million (GBP270.3million) at the domestic box office.

Rounding out the top five is Anna Faris-starring comedy The House Bunny, coming in at number four with taking of $8.3 million (GBP4.5million).

Don Cheadle-starring drama Traitor follows, taking in $7.9 million (GBP4.3million) in its first week.

Final Tracking: 'Tropic Thunder' Likely to Hold Off 'Babylon A.D.' for Labor Day Weekend Win!; 'Disaster Movie' May Finish No. 3; 'College,' 'Hamlet 2' and 'Traitor' Likely to Miss Top 5!

27 August 2008 4:56 PM, PDT | From fantasymoguls.com | See recent Fantasy Moguls news

The end of August is a dumping ground for marginal movies that are, in many cases, barely worthy of release. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer once made friends on "the island of misfit toys," but not even Rudolph would pay to see any of the "misfit movies" that are opening Labor Day weekend. I am putting my money on a third consecutive weekend win for Tropic Thunder (DreamWorks/Paramount) with another excellent hold. With Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black and Tom Cruise all continuing to generate laughs, the Stiller-directed satire may have just enough juice to win another weekend with a three-day of $11 million-$13 million (my prediction is $12.5 million) and a four-day of $14.5 million-$16.5 million (I am calling for $15.75 million). That would push its U.S. cume to $86 million-$88 million. At this pace, Thunder appears headed for $115 million-$120 million domestic.

Box Office: 'Tropic Thunder' clings to No. 1 spot

24 August 2008 5:23 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

By Franck Tabouring

Weekend of August 22 – 24, 2008

Tropic Thunder” topped the North American box office for the second consecutive weekend with $16.1 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Ben Stiller’s critically acclaimed action comedy managed to fend off a bunch of new releases, lifting its domestic total to $65.6 million after a solid two-week run. Starring Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr., the film centers on a group of actors on the run from ruthless criminals.

Following closely in second place was new entry “The House Bunny,” which debuted with $15.1 million. The Fred Wolf-directed comedy stars Anna Faris as a Playboy bunny who becomes the housemother of an unpopular sorority after being tossed out of the mansion.

Opening at No. 3 with $12.2 million was Paul W.S. Anderson’s “Death Race,” in which Jason Statham plays a prisoner who’s forced to participate in a brutal car race.

The Rocker

21 August 2008 1:03 PM, PDT | From avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news

In The Rocker, a long-in-the-tooth, generally clueless rock 'n' roll never-was takes up with an outfit of kids half his age, after getting kicked out of a band with corporate-rock ambitions. Though some of the particulars have changed, the film is essentially School Of Rock II, and the comparison does The Rocker no favors. Rainn Wilson, though eager and fitfully amusing, still seems like Jack Black's understudy, the kids aren't as charming or talented, the music isn't nearly as good, and the comedy careens from grounded to crazy and cartoonish. It's a slave to formula, and it hits its marks satisfyingly enough to make for a pleasant time-passer, but Wilson and a loaded supporting cast are never as funny as they should be. With his '80s hair-metal band Vesuvius on the cusp of a big break, raggedy drummer Wilson gets booted for not conforming to the glammed-up image favored.

Movie Reviews: The Rocker

20 August 2008 10:39 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Another Wednesday, another movie opening. Only The Rocker apparently has little chance of lifting the box office out of its usual end-of-August doldrums. Indeed David Wiegand observes in his review in the San Francisco Chronicle: "The opening date of the film was shifted around like the planchette on a Ouija board, a sure sign that the studio knew it had one of those 'Hollywood, we have a problem' movies that needed to arrive in theaters in a relatively quiet part of the summer season." The movie, which stars Rainn Wilson, a co-star of NBC's The Office, as an over-the-hill ex-drummer who returns from obscurity to push a young band into the limelight, is receiving some mighty discordant reviews from critics. "Leaden and unfunny" is the way Claudia Puig describes it in USA Today. Elizabeth Weitzman's review in the New York Daily News is headlined: "Rainn Wilson is off his 'Rocker' to take this role." Comments Stephen Holden in the New York Times: "Everything is secondhand and done by rote." Several critics suggest that the Rainn Wilson role was probably written for Jack Black and that Black turned it down. (There is no evidence that any such thing happened.) Writes Wesley Morris in the Boston Globe: "The Rocker is a grubby little redemption comedy that in every way feels like a consignment-shop Jack Black vehicle." The film does receive a few positive reviews. Michael Phillips in the Chicago Tribune writes: "It's a lot of fun. Its spirit is genuine and, even with the odd vomit gag, fundamentally sweet."

Rainn Shines!

Rainn Wilson, the schlubby actor best known for the American version of "The Office," seems an unlikely prospect for stardom. He managed to be the only annoying element in a tiny role in the otherwise superb "Juno."

But Wilson channels his inner Jack Black - the similarity in inflections and physical movement is uncanny - to winning effect in "The Rocker," which manages to be a notably funnier than average summer comedy despite being a fairly shameless rip-off of "School of Rock.

Tropic Thunder Bumps Batman

17 August 2008 6:25 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Ben Stiller's hilarious new war movie Tropic Thunder has ended Batman's reign at the top of the U.S. box office.

The comedy, which features Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise, grossed $26 million (GBP13 million) in its first weekend on release in America, giving the film a $37 million (GBP18.5 million) five-day tally.

But there's still plenty for the cast and crew of Batman's The Dark Knight to celebrate - by scoring a healthy $16.8 million (GBP8.4 million) over the weekend, the film becomes the second-highest-grossing film ever, according to new estimates.

The action movie, starring Christian Bale and the late Heath Ledger, has now amassed more than $471 million (GBP235,500) in U.S. ticket sales. Only Titanic has made more at the box office.
