Amazon has said its investments have contributed £4.8 billion ($6.1 billion) of gross value — and 16,000 jobs — to the U.K. economy since 2010. This covers the gamut of the online retail giant’s various subsidiaries, including Kindle Direct Publishing, Amazon Publishing, Prime Video, Audible, Amazon Fashion, Amazon Music and Amazon Games, among others.
Overall, the company — which revealed the figures on Wednesday — has invested more than £4.2 billion in U.K. creative industries since 2010, and has doubled its investment since 2018.
As Prime Video continues to embed in the U.K. creative sector, it can also count the British Film Institute as its next stop. A number of the streamer’s U.K.-shot originals, including “Good Omens” and “Clarkson’s Farm,” will be digitally preserved in the BFI National Archive as part of a new partnership. Updated with Sky quotes: The U.S. giants are relentlessly focused on consumer convenience and access to content, according to the UK bosses of Amazon, Sky and Roku this morning.
The future of TV-watching is about “range and convenience,” said Amazon Prime Video UK MD Chris Bird, as he floated the notion that there has “never been a better time to be an audience member with the breadth and selection of what’s on offer.”
“Everything is available all of the time,” Bird added, speaking at the Deloitte & Enders Media and Telecoms 2023 & Beyond Conference. “It’s about how conveniently you can access the content you want to watch at the time you want to watch through the mediums that we can provide.”
Bird praised Prime Video for being “available pretty ubiquitously,” adding: “We see this as a key, important factor.”

Prime Video U.K. managing director Chris Bird said “there’s never been a better time to be an audience” when asked about the saturation of streaming services available to consumers.
“The breadth and selection of content available has never been more pronounced,” he said. “Everything is available all the time. I think the future is about range and convenience. Services that can provide that will be sustainable.”
Bird also pointed out how Amazon’s strategy encompassed all types of distribution, saying that via the company’s purchase of MGM they were funding movies such as “Creed III” that will be available in theaters before the film moves to the subscription-based Prime Video and eventually AVOD. “At some point down the line, ‘Creed III’ will be available freely, most likely as ad-supported,” Bird said.

Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service has signed an agreement with the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) to produce age ratings for content.
The agreement will enable Prime Video to build on their existing trust and safety tools, in order to move towards the in-house production of BBFC age ratings that are in line with the BBFC’s classification guidelines.
The BBFC will support Prime Video as they adapt their rating methodologies in the U.K. to fully reflect the BBFC’s classification standards. This will extend the presence of the BBFC’s trusted guidance on the streaming service in the U.K,, the BBFC said. As part of the agreement, the BBFC will share additional expertise and insight into the standards they apply when classifying film, video and TV content.

Exclusive: Steve Coogan’s Alan Partridge Live: Stratagem will stream on Amazon Prime UK in the winter, Deadline can reveal. Chris Bird, Managing Director Prime Video UK, confirmed the news.
Alan Partridge Live: Stratagem toured the UK and Ireland this April and May, 14 years after the Coogan alter ego’s last live tour. The Phil McIntyre Live Ltd and Baby Cow Productions production was filmed when the show played London’s O2 Arena last month.
Coogan (Philomena) introduced the character Alan Partridge as a parody of a certain type of bumptious, British television personality in 1991 in the BBC Radio 4 spoof current affairs show On the Hour, featured as its sports correspondent. That resulted in a multitude of spinoffs, including radio chat show Knowing Me, Knowing You, that was later adapted for TV.
There was an Alan Partridge film released in 2013 and a spoof autobiography.

Global streamers are investing heavily in Scotland, with Amazon Prime Video investing £50 million ($65 million) across three series.
The U.K. parliament’s Scottish Affairs Committee is conducting a series of evidence sessions exploring the media landscape in Scotland. Amazon and Netflix appeared before the committee on Monday.
“Over the last 12 months, we’ve contributed directly over £50 million into the creative industries and that’s across three shows that we’re very proud to have shot and being currently shooting,” Amazon Europe originals chief Georgia Brown told the committee. The shows are “The Rig,” “Anansi Boys” and “Good Omens” season two.
Brown added that within that investment, the streamer has created over 750 jobs, of which 60% have been Scottish, and 60 traineeships were created directly into those productions.
Anne Mensah, who was formerly head of drama at BBC Scotland and is currently VP, original series, at Netflix, said that parts of hit series...

Docuseries
Amazon Prime Video and Rtg Features have dropped the trailer for “Pau Gasol: It’s About the Journey,” announced by Variety in April of this year, a four-part docuseries covering the twilight of the former NBA star’s career which will premiere on Prime Video in more than 200 countries on Nov. 12.
A Lakers legend, Gasol’s last NBA game was in March of 2019 when, shortly after signing with the Milwaukee Bucks, a team that looked perhaps one star short of their first NBA title in nearly half a century, Gasol’s season and NBA career were ended prematurely by a stress fracture. A year later, he signed for Fc Barcelona’s men’s basketball team, where he began his professional career more than 20 years ago, to prepare for his final appearance with the Spanish Men’s National Team at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Amazon Prime Video has taken U.K. rights to coming-of-age spy thriller “Alex Rider,” which will launch on the platform in June.
Produced by Eleventh Hour Films and Sony Pictures Television, the show is based on the second novel in Anthony Horowitz’s “Alex Rider” novels, “Point Blanc.” All eight episodes of the series will launch on Amazon on June 4.

Update: commission members revealed; Lionsgate’s Zygi Kamasa to chair group.
The BFI is launching a commission to investigate the health of the UK independent film industry.
Led by Zygi Kamasa, CEO Lionsgate UK and Europe, the working group will make recommendations on what should be done to improve conditions to ensure domestic and international sustainability.
Kamasa, who has been outspoken about the challenges facing the sector and has previously mooted industrial incentives such as cheaper cinema tickets for UK films, will invite evidence and contributions from cross-industry specialists from the production, sales, distribution and exhibition sectors over the next four months.
The commission, which was one of the projects set out by the BFI in its latest five-year plan for film, is expected to work closely with industry partners including Pact, Ukca and the Fda before publishing its findings in autumn 2017.
