When pondering the Revolutionary War, specific inflection points come to mind. The Boston Massacre of 1770, Paul Revere’s midnight warning in 1775 and the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 are often the main topics of conversation. However, much more went on during the nearly two-decade-long battle that led to the 13 colonies’ independence from England. Adapted from Pulitzer Prize-winner Stacy Schiff’s novel, “A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America,” Apple TV+’s “Franklin” recounts inventor Benjamin Franklin’s eight-year mission in France where he schemed and plotted to foster a Franco-American alliance. What should be a sparkling recounting of a pivotal moment in U.S. history is flattened, becoming a mind-numbing and belabored affair of wig-wearing men shouting at each other in dark rooms.
Created by Kirk Ellis and Howard Korder, the series opens in December 1776. Though the Declaration of Independence had been signed three months prior,...

To help create the costumes for his musical adaptation of “Cyrano,” director Joe Wright enlisted Oscar-nominated costume designer Massimo Cantini Parrini to bring his signature steady hand to the project. But while the end result – which is out later this month in limited release before a nationwide debut on February 11 (“Cyrano” had an awards-qualifying run in December of last year) – looks as lavish and bespoke as Wright’s other films, its production was anything but effortless. Wright shot the film in the fall of 2020 before the coronavirus vaccines were widely available, and as Parrini tells Gold Derby, it created a unique set of challenges unlike any he experienced before.
“It was extremely difficult,” Parrini says through an interpreter in our exclusive interview. “The day before we had to start shooting we had four or five very important people from my department who had to be quarantined. The first 10 days were...

Joe Wright’s “Cyrano” is an adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac, the film’s script is penned by Erica Schmidt based on her 2018 stage musical. When Wright wanted to tell the story with Peter Dinklage in the starring role, he called on production designer Sarah Greenwood to scout for locations – Notto, in Scilly, would be the perfect location.
Wright also had ideas for makeup and even the film’s choreography – minimal was key.
“Cyrano’s” makeup designer Alessandro Bertolazzi says he used just one shade of red for the film’s makeup. In retrospect, Bertolazzi says not only was it a risky move, “but it’s quite crazy.”
His research process to find the right color meant looking at different grease palettes and water-based colors until he found the right color. Once he did, it was about taking that and creating a different result on every character that included Cyrano,...

Late great Italian actor Vittorio Gassman, who is best known to U.S. audiences as the star of classics such as “Big Deal on Madonna Street” and “Il Sorpasso” (“The Easy Life”), will be celebrated by the Los Angeles-Italia Film Fashion and Art Festival, which will run March 20-26 at Hollywood’s Tcl Chinese Theater.
The annual pre-Oscars event comprising movies and music and celebrating showbiz ties between Italy and Hollywood, now at its 17th edition, will pay tribute to the centennial of Gassman’s birth with a mini-retro honoring the memory of the iconic thesp who, among other accolades, won the best actor prize at Cannes in 1975 for his performance as a blind man in Dino Risi’s ”Profumo di Donna,” later remade in English as ”Scent of a Woman” with Al Pacino.

To create a safe working environment while shooting “Cyrano” during the coronavirus pandemic before a vaccine was widely available, director Joe Wright established a bubble with his cast and crew on location in Italy. But while the strict health and safety protocols required to mount a musical production in October 2020 were significant, it also provided a bit of creative inspiration, at least according to Sian Miller and Oscar winner Alessandro Bertolazzi, the “Cyrano” hair and makeup team.
The situation helped, says Bertolazzi in a new interview with Gold Derby. “It is weird to say that because we were all prisoners in the same building and we had to stay all together,” he says. But the result was that everyone was “happy to be there to do this magic project.”

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, make sure you’re doing work on Jared Leto. That might be one lesson from the Oscars shortlists, where Leto’s film “The Little Things” was included among the 10 semi-finalists in that category. If it ultimately receives a nomination and wins, it would be the third Leto film in less than 10 years to win this exact award.

Aaron Sorkin’s acclaimed and increasingly relevant political drama The Trial of the Chicago 7, which revolves around the raucous trial of a group of protesters accused of disrupting the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention, took a leading four awards including best picture at the just concluded 25th annual Capri, Hollywood – The International Film Festival. If past winners at this Italian fest are any indication, the victories should give the Netflix film a boost stateside during Oscar season.

Despite Joker being the most heavily Oscar-nominated comic book movie in history, in the end it only took home two awards at this year’s ceremony: Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Original Score for composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. However, its wins continue a trend of live action movies featuring the Clown Prince of Crime to have picked up at least one of the film industry’s most coveted honors.
First off, no, this sadly doesn’t include 1966’s Batman: The Movie, the Adam Ward TV series taken to the big screen in a ludicrous expansion, which unsurprisingly did not set awards season alight. Outwith that colorful and villain-overloaded campfest, the Joker’s first live action appearance was Jack Nicolson’s gangster in Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman movie. The film’s only Academy Award nomination was for Best Art Direction, and was picked up by production designer Anton Furst and set decorator Peter Young.

At the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on Feb. 24, Oscar frontrunner “Darkest Hour” won two of its three races: special makeup effects and best period/character makeup. It lost best period/character hairstyling to “I, Tonya.”
Among those films that “Darkest Hour” edged out for best special makeup effects was “Wonder,” one of its two Oscar rivals for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. That film contended on the contemporary side here and lost its bid for hairstyling to “Pitch Perfect 3″ and makeup to “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.” The third Oscar nominee, “Victoria and Abdul,” was snubbed by the guild.

The presentation of best picture at the Academy Awards is arguably the biggest single moment in Hollywood’s calendar, making it all the more remarkable that through a clumsy series of envelope errors, the ceremony managed to temporarily crown La La Land before that film’s producer Jordan Horowitz announced that Moonlight was in fact the winner. Accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers has since taken the blame.
Echoing the notorious blunder at the 2015 Miss Universe pageant – when presenter Steve Harvey announced the wrong winner (which Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel alluded to by joking “personally, I blame Steve Harvey for this”) – the magnitude of the blunder is unparralleled in Oscar terms but not entirely without precedent.

In one of the biggest shocks in Academy Awards history, the final award of the night, Best Picture, was mistakenly announced.
Moonlight won best picture at the 89th Oscars after La La Land was erroneously reported announced as the winner.
Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway read La La Land right after Emma Stone won best actress for her role in the modern-day musical. After the cast took the stage, a producer for La La Land corrected things and said, “[Actually] ‘Moonlight’ is the winner … this is not a joke.”
The La Times exclusively spoke to best picture presenter Warren Beatty backstage after the history-making mistake that briefly awarded La La Land the honor instead of rightful winner Moonlight and the legendary director explained what happened onstage.
“I looked down at the card and thought, ‘This is very strange, because it says best actress.’ Maybe there was a misprint. I don’t know what happened.

Hollywood’s biggest night — and the glitzy, glam-filled capper of the annual awards season — unfolded Sunday at Hollywood & Highland’s Dolby Theatre, where the entertainment industry’s biggest and brightest turned out en masse to celebrate (and potentially walk away with a statuette of their very own). By the time Oscar Sunday bowed (a little dark, a touch rainy) there was still plenty left up in the air (though few could predict the wild turn the ceremony eventually took in its final moments).
Ultimately, big nominee “La La Land” walked away with 6 Oscars — including Best Actress and Best Director — though there’s no question the biggest story of the night (of the year? of the Oscars ever?) was an announcing flub from Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, who initially announced that “La La Land” had won Best Picture, before issuing a correction that the accolade actually belonged to Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight.

There isn't a screenwriter in Hollywood who could have written a twist that's both as shocking and joyous as the end of the 2017 Oscars. Winners are now indicated. I correctly guessed 11 out of the 24 categories, which is slightly better than last year, when I guessed 10 out of 24.

“La La Land,” as expected, dominated the Oscar crafts, with Damien Chazelle’s musical valentine taking four awards for cinematography, production design, score, and original song. Still, it was predicted to win at least three more.
And it was a great night for Disney and its trio of winners: the zeitgeist-grabbing “Zootopia” (animated feature), Disney Animation’s third Oscar in four years, which trumpeted tolerance ahead of the Presidential election; Alan Barillaro’s fine-feathered “Piper” (animated short), Pixar’s R&D sculpting project that ended its 15-year shorts drought; and Jon Favreau’s “The Jungle Book” (VFX), which innovated photographic-based realism. The award was shared by production VFX supervisor Rob Legato, Mpc’s VFX supervisor Adam Valdez, Weta Digital’s VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon, and Andrew R. Jones, the animation supervisor.

As much as the 89th annual Academy Awards were about the celebrities and the fashion, it was also about politics.
From winners to presenters to host Jimmy Kimmel, there were plenty of President Donald Trump-centric moments — and many happened without even saying his name. The broadcast hit on controversial topics including the immigration ban executive order, fake news and a member of Trump’s cabinet.
Here are all the political mentions during Sunday’s show (so far):
And the winner for most Trump mentions is … Kimmel!

The 89th Annual Academy Awards kicked off Sunday at Los Angeles' Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center, and as expected, the A-Listers came dressed to impress.
La La Land star Emma Stone wowed in a classy, custom-created Givenchy gown, while Hidden Figures star Taraji P. The men looked just as handsome, with Stone's co-star, Ryan Gosling, sporting a Gucci suit, and Fifty Shades Darker star Jamie Dornan in a cream-colored tuxedo jacket.
And while the red carpet looks were undoubtedly fabulous, all eyes were on the night's big winners. See the full list of everyone who took home a shiny statuette and check back throughout the night for updates!

Oscar Week celebrated three exceptional nominees at the annual Makeup & Hairstyling Symposium: “A Man Called Ove,” “Star Trek Beyond” and “Suicide Squad.” Branch governor and longtime host Leonard Engelman started the event with a favorite story about 20th Century Fox lobbying the Academy to award John Chambers with an honorary Oscar for “Planet of the Apes” in 1968. He was joined by fellow governors Kathryn Blondell and Lois Burwell in welcoming the nominees and giving an inside look at the bake-off and nomination process.
Burwell said the branch meets twice a year to discuss the films that members think should be viewed in a theater and considered for seven finalists. Branch members also communicate throughout the year to bring attention to outstanding work. The seven finalists are usually narrowed down to three nominees but there have been years with two and four nominees.

Sunday’s 89th Academy Awards are underway at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney took to the stage at the Dolby Theatre in a popular adapted screenplay win for Moonlight as the drama earned its second win of the night.
Moments earlier Kenneth Lonergan accepted the original screenplay award for Manchester By The Sea in the film’s first prize. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon – winners of this award for Good Will Hunting 19 years ago – presented the honour to Lonergan. Damon was a producer on the film.
Meryl Streep used her Oscar show platform to pay subtle homage to the unifying power of film when she joined Javier Bardem on stage at the Dolby Theatre to present the cinematography award.
“Truth is hard to reveal,” Streep said, “but when it happens on the movie screen filmgoers no matter where they are from, feel their hearts soar.”

Oscar frontrunner “La La Land” continued its awards momentum, taking best contemporary hairstyling Sunday night at the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards.
However, in terms of the Oscar race, makeup and hairstyling nominees “Suicide Squad” and “Star Trek Beyond” were both big winners, grabbing period/character make-up and special make-up effects, respectively.
Other movie winners were “Nocturnal Animals” for contemporary make-up and “Hail, Caesar!” for period hair styling.
TV winners included “Westworld,” ” Game of Thrones,” The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.” “American Horror Story: Roanoke,” “The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again,” and “Dancing With the Stars.”
Make-up artist Leonard Engelman (“Ghostbusters”) and hair stylist Barbara Lorenz (“La La Land”) were feted for their lifetime achievements, while “American Horror Story” creator Ryan Murphy received the Distinguished Artisan Award.

The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in and La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations! I knew La La Land was going to explode at this event, and it's probably going to end up taking home many of the awards is was nominated for. The 14 nominations ties the record with 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve.
Arrival ended up with eight nominations as did Moonlight, while Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea all got six. Deadpool ended up with zero nominations. I was hoping to see it somewhere on the list, but it looks like all that hype didn't work.
Every film and actor who was nominated for their work deserves to be on this list, so congratulations to them all! There are so many great films and actors to root for, but there can be only one winner in each category.

In a new profile with Allure Magazine, Alessandro Bertolazzi, the hair & makeup designer for Warner Bros.' Suicide Squad, detailed his process behind creating the signature looks for Harley Quinn and the rest of her colorful Task Force X. To achieve Quinn's look, Margot Robbie would need fresh custom tattoos applied to her body on a daily basis from head-to-toe, which would take about an hour to position. As for her hair, Bertolazzi wanted to make her pigtails stiff and rigid, and he achieved this by taking rubber stompers off the ends of walking canes, making holes in them, applying paint, and then using them to secure Robbie's hair in place. For her lips, Bertolazzi found a classic red color that in his words, was "not pink, not orangey." To accompany the article, which you can read Here, the magazine also released a stunning new photo of Robbie on-set as...

Now that summer movie season is over, it’s Oscar season. During winter and fall many Oscar-hopeful movies are released. This is our overview of what you can expect leading up to the 2015 Oscars.
For fans of film, fall and winter are the best times of the year. This is when, typically, some of the most well-received films are released. Unofficially, we call it Oscar Season, and there’s good reason that the year’s best films are saved for last. Any film released before the end of the year is eligible for Oscar nomination. Therefore, if you release your film towards the end of the year, it will be fresher in audience and critic minds when awards time rolls around in early March/late February (February 22nd, 2015 to be exact).
In preparation for the fall and winter movie season, we’ve put together this preview of films that have been getting lots of attention.
