In 1953, Alain Resnais, Chris Marker, and Ghislain Cloquet produced Statues Also Die, one of the fiercest and most lucid indictments of white imperialism ever captured on film. Commissioned by the magazine Présence Africaine, it sought to dissect Western attitudes toward African art. The 30-minute short did not begin as an anti-colonial project but became one along the way, informed by the belittling treatment that antiquities from the continent had received across French cultural institutions since their plundering under colonial rule. Why, for a start, was African art routinely confined at the Musée de l’Homme in Paris––an ethnographic museum––while Greek or Assyrian pieces found their place at the Louvre? An arresting montage of statues and their visitors swelled into a much larger critique of the systematic oppression of Black culture and Black bodies, with a third act considering the exploitation of Black athletes and musicians in the States.

In November 2021, 61 years after Benin gained independence from the French empire, 26 of the many thousands of plundered national antiquities were returned by France to their African home. Inserting an inquisitive, imaginative intelligence into this key moment in the troubled timeline of post-imperial cultural politics, French-Senegalese director Mati Diop fashions her superb, short but potent hybrid doc “Dahomey” as a slim lever that cracks open the sealed crate of colonial history, sending a hundred of its associated erasures and injustices tumbling into the light.
The film takes its title from the kingdom on Benin’s Atlantic coast, that existed in formidable militarism for 300 years until 1894, and whose fabled female warriors were recently the subject of Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “The Woman King.” But “Dahomey” starts far from the pomp and grandeur of that wealthy, warlike kingdom, in the basement level of the Parisian Musée du Quai Branly, where CCTV cameras stare down at empty,...

“Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths” is the latest project from Alejandro González Iñárritu, the four-time Academy Award winner who serves as a multi-hyphenate (director-co-writer-producer-editor-music) on the surreal new film that was released in select theaters on November 4 and hits Netflix in the United States on December 16. The Best Picture contender is described as an “epic, visually stunning and immersive experience set against the intimate and moving journey of Silverio (Daniel Gimenez Cacho), a renowned Mexican journalist and documentary filmmaker living in Los Angeles who is compelled to return to his native Mexico.”
In an exclusive video featurette pushing “Bardo’s” sound editing strengths for Oscar consideration in that craft category, supervising sound editor and sound designer Martin Hernandez and supervising sound editor Nicolas Becker talk about their inspiration in producing the film’s audio.

In Alejandro González Iñárritu’s newest film, “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths,” a documentarian (played by Daniel Giménez Cacho) travels to his home country of Mexico for a party in his honor and struggles with an existential crisis. For sound designer and supervisor Martin Hernandez, creating the soundscape of the film meant using audio to capture the slippery nature of memory.
“More than a mental journey, I think this is a state of mind, which is a quite different thing,” Hernandez told IndieWire Crafts and Animation Editor Bill Desowitz at IndieWire’s Consider This FYC Brunch. “A state of mind is something that lingers in your memory. It’s something that is in you a long time ago, and it transforms you. Alejandro has this idea that we are not exactly the ones in the picture of you when you were a kid. We’re different people now.

Violence — or, rather, the threat of violence — haunts every frame of João Paulo Miranda Maria’s debut feature film, “Memory House.” Set in an Austrian settlement in Southern Brazil, this discomfiting drama tells the story of a man so alienated by the world around him that the stench of death at work and the menacing environment outside it have hollowed him out. That is until his titular dwelling kicks off a transformation that turns Miranda Maria’s character study into a folk-infused fable for a country in crisis.

Visual artist Pascual Sisto’s feature debut “John and the Hole” hits theaters Aug. 6 after a long wait — the IFC release was a prestigious Cannes 2020 Label selection, and it also played at Sundance earlier this year. Sisto was also named one of Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch in 2021. A cross between an unnerving fable and thriller, “John and the Hole” is written by Nicolás Giacobone, who adapted the screenplay from his short story “El Pozo.” Film stars Charlie Shotwell as a young teen who traps his family in an abandoned underground bunker and plays at being an adult. Film also stars Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Ehle and Taissa Farmiga. Sisto came to the U.S. from Spain to study filmmaking and is also an accomplished artist, having mounted exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe. Sisto talked to Variety over the phone recently. The conversation has been edited for length.

It has been another strange and uncertain year for Hollywood, with the pandemic hitting cinemas hard and streaming services rising to hold the fort. It has also been a year in which we’ve seen a growing diversity in front of, and behind the camera, with an increasing focus on new voices and new stories being told.
Last year saw Bong Joon-ho ‘s Parasite achieve Oscar greatness and, for a brief pre-covid moment, it seemed that the world of cinema was beginning to embrace a wider world. The 2021 BAFTAs showed signs this was continuing with Minari, Another Round and Promising Young Woman taking home a clutch of awards each.
This year’s American Academy Awards will be a strange affair, certainly one to remember.

Netflix wrapped up the longest Oscar season in history by dominating the craft awards Sunday night, splitting four prizes between “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, starring Oscar nominee Viola Davis as the trailblazing, ’20s blues singer, and David Fincher’s monochromatic “Mank,” (cinematography and production design), the biopic about Herman J. Mankiewicz’ frenzied scripting of “Citizen Kane.” Overlooked, though, was Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
The two Oscars for “Ma Rainey’s” were expected for the bold and gritty verisimilitude demanded by Davis and supplied by 89-year-old costume designer Ann Roth (a two-time winner), makeup stylist Sergio Lopez Rivera, and hair stylists Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson (who made Oscar history as the first Black female winners from their category). As widely expected, Sound of Metal won the Oscar in sound, a new category introduced by the Motion Picture Academy this year that combines the former sound editing and sound mixing categories.
Starring Oscar-nominated Riz Ahmed as a drummer who is losing his hearing, the film deftly uses sound — and the absence of sound — to give the audience his aural point of view.
This is the first Academy Award for supervising sound editor/designer Nicolas Becker, production sound mixer Phillip Bladh, and rerecording mixers Jaime Baksht, Carlos Cortés, and Michelle Couttolenc, who was one of just two women nominated in the category this ...

Good news: There are 41 feature films nominated for Oscars this year. Better news: The 93rd Academy Awards are Sunday, so there’s still time to watch some of the movies before the biggest night in Hollywood.
“Mank” leads all films with 10 nominations, with “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” in a six-way tie for second with six nominations a piece. It’s the most diverse slate of nominees ever, with two women in the directing category for the first time ever (“Nomadland” director Chloe Zhao and “Promising Young Woman” filmmaker Emerald Fennell), and nine of the 20 acting nominations went to people of color.
It’s also an extraordinarily streaming-heavy field; Netflix snagged an astonishing 35 nominations, its highest mark ever and the most for an individual studio in more than a decade.

“Mank” is the only film in contention at the 2021 Oscars to break the double digit barrier in the nominations count. This Netflix period picture reaped a leading 10 bids. In a six-way tied for second place with, appropriately enough, six nominations apiece are “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” All seven of these films are up for Best Picture. That race is rounded out by five-time contender “Promising Young Woman.”

Ahead of this year’s Oscars, the academy made the decision to merge the Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories into one: Best Sound. The films in contention for this new award are “Greyhound,” “Mank,” “News of the World,” “Soul,” and “Sound of Metal.” Our current odds indicate that “Sound of Metal” (31/10) will take the prize, followed in order by “Soul” (39/10), “Mank” (9/2), “Greyhound” (9/2), and “News of the World” (9/2).
The individuals included in the current lineup have amassed a total of 34 nominations for their sound work in 30 films. “Sound of Metal” is the only film of the five that does not include any previous Oscar nominees on its sound team. Its first-time contenders are: Jaime Baksht, Nicolas Becker, Philip Bladh, Carlos Cortés and Michelle Couttolenc.
“Sound of Metal” and “Mank” now hold the distinction of being the first films recognized in a sound category with five credited team members each.

For the first time in decades, the Academy has merged sound editing and sound mixing into a single category because of persistent overlap, and this season offers five exemplary nominees: the experimental “Sound of Metal,” “Mank,” and “Soul,” the rugged western soundscape of “News of the World,” and the explosive sounds of World War II battleships in “Greyhound” (the latter two starring Tom Hanks).
But Darius Marder’s “Sound of Metal,” in which Riz Ahmed portrays Ruben, a heavy-metal drummer losing his hearing, is the favorite to win the Oscar for its complexity and detail. Although the film was snubbed at the Mpse Golden Reel Awards, it rebounded to take the Cas sound mixing prize. This is a film about sound because of the way it explores deafness as a way of experiencing sound and vibration. There’s an extraordinary level of craftsmanship among this year’s nominees for the Cinema Audio Society Awards, which recognizes outstanding accomplishments in sound mixing, a collaborative discipline that requires sound editors, re-recording mixers, Foley and Adr artistry to work together to create a finished product.
Seven categories will be recognized this year across from live action features to specials and post-production, and the nominees include awards season stalwarts such as “Mank,” “News of the World,” “Soul” and “News of the World,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “Sound of Metal” and “Onward.”
As previously announced, George Clooney will receive the Cas filmmaker award and production sound mixer William B. Kaplan will be the Cas career achievement honoree.

“Sound of Metal” director Darius Marder says he and his Oscar-nominated sound team — Nicolas Becker, Jaime Baksht, Michelle Couttolenc, Carlos Cortes Navarrete — wanted heightened naturalism to depict varying stages of hearing and deafness of lead character Ruben (Riz Ahmed).
“This sound mix is as complicated as in an action film,” Marder says. “This has just as many tracks, but it’s not looking to wow you, like explosions. This is trying to engage your senses in hyper-nuance.”
“Metal” has many more layers of sound than usual in dramas, to simulate the experience of being deaf. “Deafness isn’t silence,” Marder says. “There’s a ton of low-frequency, so sometimes you’re hearing low vibrations; there is a whole sonic experience and you have to find the right balance.”
That involved such unusual moves as using underwater microphones for dialogue scenes, and multi-dimensional mics for the concert scenes.

The 2021 British Academy Film Awards are being presented on two nights, with eight categories handed out on Saturday, April 10, and the rest being presented on Sunday, April 11. Check out the complete list of BAFTA champs here.
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was the most awarded film on Saturday, winning both of its nominations there: Best Costume Design for Ann Roth and Best Makeup and Hair for the team of Matiki Anoff, Larry M. Cherry, Sergio Lopez-Rivera, and Mia Neal. The film has only one other nomination: Best Actor for the late Chadwick Boseman. He stands a good chance of winning that on Sunday, which would give the film a clean sweep, so it’s a little surprising that “Ma Rainey” didn’t get nominations in any other categories.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was the big winner on the opening night of the 2021 BAFTA Film Awards, taking home two golden masks from a possible two.
Night 1, hosted virtually by radio and TV presenter Clara Amfo, was a mostly craft-centered affair which also yielded wins for “Mank,” “Tenet” and “Sound of Metal.”
The first show was originally scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. local time, but according to sources the BBC made a late decision to push the broadcast by an hour. Amfo opened the show by reading a tribute to Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, who died Friday at the age of 99.

At the heart of every filmmaking decision is one question: Where is the audience in relationship to what is happening on screen? One of the most common approaches to answering this question is through subjectivity; by putting the viewer into a character’s point of view (often, quite literally), a filmmaker can shape how we emotionally absorb and viscerally react to the story unfolding on screen.
When it came time to tell the story in “Sound of Metal,” in which hardcore drummer Ruben (Riz Ahmed) experiences a sudden loss of hearing, writer/director Darius Marder reached for something different to orient how the audience understands what is happening inside Ruben’s own body.
“I wanted to use a language of perspective that I had never seen before,” said Marder. “When we think of point of view we think of visuals, not sound. Some films have thrown you into perspective through sound,...

Double Oscar nominee Leslie Odom Jr. was among the craftsmen and craftswomen at Variety‘s Artisans Awards offering advice on how to get into the field they work in. Odom Jr. said, “Starting with the education is key, and starting in the theater is key for me.”
The “One Night in Miami” actor, songwriter and theater performer was honored at the seventh annual Variety Artisans Awards alongside co-writer Sam Ashworth for their original song contender “Speak Now.”
The tribute evening took place in a virtual ceremony on Monday that streamed on the Santa Barbara Film Festival website. Variety’s Senior Artisans Editor Jazz Tangcay moderated conversations with the Artisan Award recipients.
Sbiff Executive Director Roger Durling kicked off the evening by introducing the honorees. He said, “We celebrate this evening, below-the-line talent at the heart of filmmaking,” told viewers who watched the event from the festival’s online streaming platform.

Early on during the pandemic, it became obvious to Santa Barbara Intl. Film Festival executive director Roger Durling that the 36th edition of the festival would be like no other, and not in a good way. But he was hoping that by pushing the event back more than three months from mid-January to spring 2021, he’d be able to mount a hybrid event with some form of indoor screenings.
When that became unfeasible, he pivoted to a seated, socially distanced outdoor event at a Santa Barbara park. Build-out plans were drawn up and budgets were calculated. Then California experienced a dramatic surge in Covid-19 cases in November, and it became clear that the city would never approve their permit request.
“For 24 hours, I was pretty distraught,” recalls Durling. Then someone suggested turning the parking lots at Santa Barbara City College into a drive-in, “and all of a sudden it became super-exciting.

You wouldn’t necessarily think that sound would go hand-in-hand with film editing, but at the Oscars, those awards have often gone to the same film. In fact, the last seven film editing winners in a row have won one or both sound awards (this year the two sound categories were consolidated). And only seven film editing winners in the last 20 years have failed to win a sound prize. Could “Sound of Metal” continue this trend?
SEEWhy ‘Sound of Metal’ has a very specific advantage in the Best Sound Oscar category
While sound and film editing are quite different disciplines, they tend to advantage the same two kinds of films. One kind is action movies that tend to include a lot of fast-paced cuts and explosive audio effects. That includes “Black Hawk Down” (2001), “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003), “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2007), “The Hurt Locker” (2009), “Gravity...

Praised for its immersive approach to mapping out a drummer’s confrontation with hearing loss, writer-director Darius Marder’s “Sound of Metal,” now contending for six Academy Awards, features a singularly story-driven use of sound.
Part of that sonic alchemy proudly bears a “Made in Mexico” stamp. The film is nominated for best sound, and three of the nominated artisans are Mexican re-recording mixers Jaime Baksht, Michelle Couttolenc, and Carlos Cortés Navarrete. Together they worked alongside fellow nominees Nicolas Becker and Phillip Bladh to fine-tune the sonic palette. The Mexican trio lent their seasoned skills, honed over many years working on homegrown productions and the occasional international job, across multiple stages of the film’s post-production journey.
Though all of them studied in Europe or the United States, given the limited availability of sound-focused education in their homeland during their formative period, they returned to Mexico to carve out their careers.

“Sound of Metal” had long been the frontrunner to be nominated for Best Sound at the Oscars, and this prediction proved correct in Monday’s Oscar nominations announcement. Early odds forecast a win for sound designers Nicolas Becker, Jaime Baksht, Michelle Coutollenc, Carlos Cortes and Philip Bladh in the category, which was just combined this year after decades of being split up into Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.
The entirety of “Sound of Metal” is a showcase for their work as it charts the journey of a heavy metal drummer (Best Actor nominee Riz Ahmed) who suddenly loses his hearing. The sound design is intricately crafted to recreate the experience of a hearing person who is deafened, allowing us to sense the vibrations and understand how he is experiencing the world each step of the way.

Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” swept the Latino Entertainment Film Awards on Sunday, taking home four awards, including best picture, director, cinematography and editing.
The awards, which are voted on and presented by the Latino Entertainment Journalists Association, also honored Oscar-nominated actor Rosie Perez with the Rita Moreno Lifetime Achievement Award and the Latino Activism Award. In a pre-taped speech, Perez thanked the Leja and spoke about her work as an activist.
“It’s weird getting an award for it to be quite honest – because I don’t do it for that. I do it just to help make the world a better place for everyone,” Perez said.
“The Prom” and “Hamilton” star Ariana DeBose was given the Latino Breakout Award. “I believe fervently in representation and I’m really proud to be even be a small part of the expansion of how we are viewed in this entertainment industry. We are a vast,...

Finetuning the sound of “Sound of Metal” was one of the most crucial elements of the film. This is where sound editor Nicolas Becker came into play, carefully crafting the auditory perception Ruben (Riz Ahmed) is having throughout the film as he loses his hearing. For Becker, “Sound of Metal” was a unique experience having previously worked as a foley artist on louder blockbusters like “Gravity” and “Arrival.” “It’s not a film with a lot of crazy explosions,” says Becker in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “It’s something really deep and simple and it’s about silence, it’s about respecting the audience.” Watch the video interview above.
To prep for the film, Becker brought director Darius Marder to an anechoic chamber, an echo-free room where you are able to hear the sounds of your own body such as your heartbeat, tendons and blood pressure. These...

What does it feel like when your relationship to the world around you unexpectedly and dramatically alters? It’s a question “Sound of Metal” writer/director Darius Marder had to think through at every step of the process of telling the story of Ruben (Riz Ahmed), a recovering addict and hardcore drummer who loses his hearing.
While on the Filmmaker Toolkit Podcast, Marder and Ahmed discussed how the key to tuning the audience into Ruben’s experience was to first create an immersive and realistic experience for the actor on set. “It all boils down to the same thing, which is veracity,” explained Marder. “When we look upon truth and we feel truth. … I think we recognize something fundamentally human when that happens.”
To prepare for the role, Ahmed learned American Sign Language (Asl) and how to drum. He even wore a custom device in his ears that emitted white noise,...

“Sound of Metal” editor Mikkel E.G. Nielsen worked closely on keeping the film focused on Ruben’s internal journey. Ruben (Riz Ahmed) starts the film as a heavy metal drummer who suddenly loses his hearing and we follow him as he is suddenly forced into a new world of communication at a sober house for the deaf under the guidance of mentor Joe (Paul Raci). “The whole start has a completely different pace than at Joe’s house,” says Nielsen in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “And then you have the end, which is different as well.” Watch the full interview about the Amazon Prime movie above.
Nielsen observes that the title “Sound of Metal” is reflected in the three acts. The first part represents “sound,” which is Ruben’s final experiences of being a proper hearing person; the second is “of,” the transitional point for the character; the third act is “metal,...
