“Alex Honnold: The Soloist” and “Glimpse” were awarded at Cannes Xr x VeeR Future Awards on May 22, named best VR story and best VR interactive experience respectively. The winners were announced by jurors Zhang Ziyi and Bad Robot’s Hannah Minghella, who judged 18 shortlisted VR works alongside Michel Reilhac, Vicki Dobbs Beck, Kari Skogland and Doug Chiang.
The event, marking the third year of the partnership, took place online on a shared metaverse called “Alexandria,” created by Cannes Xr and NewImages Festival.
Directed by Jonathan Griffith, two-part series “Alex Honnold: The Soloist” follows the famous rock climber and the star of “Free Solo,” using the latest VR panoramic shooting technology.

As more and more studios are taking the plunge into virtual reality and theater owners like AMC making bets that it’s going to drive growth, some aspects of Vr are still difficult to monetize. “One of the things that is advantageous of location-based Vr experiences, it’s clear how you monetize — you sell tickets, you sell time and you make a reservation and they go through it,” Vicki Beck, executive in charge of ILMxLAB said at TheWrap’s annual media and technology conference, TheGrill, on Monday. “The home market is harder right now … which is the interactive narrative. It’s clear.

Are virtual and augmented reality truly the Next Big Thing for Hollywood? While every major studio is investing in Vr experiences, so far most are short, under-10-minute extensions of big franchise fare like “Alien: Covenant” or video games expanding on familiar characters like Warner Bros.’ “Batman: Arkham” that have little to do with traditional storytelling. “I believe immersive entertainment is going to be a real thing,” Vicki Dobbs Beck, executive in charge at ILMxLAB, told TheWrap. “We’re in the early stages, and a lot of people are skeptical and taking a wait-and-see approach.” With Vr hailed as a hot game-changing technology,...

Although Virtual Reality (Vr) has yet to take off commercially, so far the Hollywood studios are mostly embracing the new digital frontier as a marketing vehicle to promote their franchises. On Wednesday, Paramount hosted the first Vrtl Summit for Vr professionals and investors, and announced a partnership with MoveoPlus to provide Moveo Virtual Reality Simulators in theaters and theme parks, with content provided by J.J. Abrams and Michael Bay.
While they are among many top directors, from Alejandro González Iñárritu to David Goyer, who are experimenting with Vr storytelling, everyone acknowledges that the technology needs to improve — along with bringing down the cost of those bulky headsets. And the push to bring engaging content to consumers remains a challenge. It comes down to effective storytelling. Nobody’s going to pay for Vr marketing promos, so immersive adventures and interactions with virtual characters are going to have to be compelling for...

Lucasfilm's ILMxLab is working very hard to harness the power of virtual reality and what it's really capable of. They're already developing a couple of things like the Star Wars-themed Vr experience called “Trials of Tatooine” which was previewed earlier this year. They have also been developing a Darth Vader Vr experience that's being directed by David S. Goyer.
These are just stepping stones to what they are really wanting to accomplish. According to the executives at the Virtual Reality Intelligence conference (via Variety), they are looking turn the Star Wars universe and other movies into "portals for destinations that can be visited with virtual and augmented reality headsets." When talking about Star Wars, ILMxLab Executive Creative Director John said:
“We are thinking very heavily about creating a dynamic destination where stories flow through. People were so compelled by that universe that they wanted to get inside of it.
