"Bones" fans will surely recall that "Angela Montenegro" was not the birth name of the character played by actress Michaela Conlin. The origin of her true full birth name was one of the show's longest-running mysteries, and showrunner Hart Hanson and the "Bones" writers held onto that secret until the 10th season's 21st episode, "The Life in the Light," where it was revealed that "Angela" was actually born with a far more ... unusual name: Pookie Noodlin Pearly-Gates Gibbons.
That delightfully unconventional name makes a little more sense when you remember that Billy F. Gibbons, the guitarist and lead singer of rock band Zz Top, played Angela's father on the show, and he was essentially playing a heightened version of himself. But the writers took things a step further and embedded a hidden reference into the relationship between Gibbons and Angela that only hardcore Zz Top fans would know.

The news of Dusty Hill’s death, announced Wednesday by his bandmates in Zz Top, deeply impacted everyone from fans to fellow musicians. Not surprisingly, that list includes Dan Auerbach. It’s easy to draw a straight line from Zz Top to the Black Keys, especially from the rawness of the group’s first few albums to the Keys’ earliest, equally stripped-down takes on the blues. “They were a blues band with their own sound,” Auerbach says, “and that’s hard to do.”
But the connection between the two bands ran deep.

The tragic news of Dusty Hill’s death is still reverberating around the rock community. “What an icon,” Paul Stanley wrote on Twitter. “Always a gentleman from the days of us opening for them through the recent days of them opening for us. I don’t know what to say but ‘Thank you’ and ‘Rest however you damn well choose!'”
“Met him just once,” Billy Corgan wrote, “and he couldn’t have been more kind or supportive.”

Even before they revved themselves up into synth-boosted MTV hitmakers in the Eighties, Zz Top were never an ordinary blues-rock band. After Cream and Jimi Hendrix warped electric blues into psychedelia, Zz Top pulled it back to the dusty ground of Texas, but they weren’t as straight-ahead as they seemed: The rhythm section of drummer Frank Beard and late bassist (and sometime vocalist) Dusty Hill could groove so uncannily hard that a song like “Jesus Just Left Chicago” could feel otherworldly — and then the interdimensional squall of Billy Gibbons’ lead guitar would arrive.

In 2002, RCA released the compilation album Sharp Dressed Men: A Tribute to Zz Top, an all-country salute to the Texas band’s influential and enduring work. Settling in to watch “Zz Top: That Little Ol’ Band From Texas,” you may have a burning question that applies to almost no other rock documentary, and that is: Who, exactly, are these guys? The ones behind the beards?
If you’re old enough, of course, you probably know that Zz Top started out, in 1969, as a trio of wild-and-woolly cowboy rockers who played their own brand of dirty amped-up tin-shack blues. When their first hit, the lascivious redneck boogie “La Grange,” was released in 1973, there had arguably never been a sonic blast that raw, rough, and nasty on the rock charts (though “Whole Lotta Love” and the opening riff of “Spirit in the Sky” paved the way for it). Zz Top didn’t sound like a “popular” band. They sounded like the kind of band you hear in a scuzzy Texas roadhouse, or maybe on a backwoods campus.

A new rock musical featuring the hits of Zz Top is in development. The Las Vegas-based Caesars Entertainment, led by Michael Gruber and Jason Gastwirth, are developing the show, titled Sharp Dressed Man, set to premiere in 2020. It will include Zz Top members Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard as executive producers.

Gas stations are not places often associated with healthy eating, but Frank Beard wanted to change that perception and challenged himself to find wholesome food options for every meal while eating exclusively at gas stations for 30 days.
“The idea came from a larger story of mine,” Beard, 31, tells People. “About five years ago I lost 80 lbs. and that really tuned me into the whole discussion of how we blame eating out for a lot of the problem with weight gain.”

Emerging today from the annals of the internet: a photo that appears to show Zz Top at a school prom.
The picture, available below, shows Dusty Hill, Frank Beard and Billy Gibbons as men who would appear to be in their early 20s. Though we can't verify it at this time, the photo matches up with an account of a 1971 appearance at the Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School prom. That performance took place two years after the band was formed.
“People were actually crashing our prom,” one student recounted. “People were trying to sneak in anyway they could just to see these guys perform. It was really funny.”
Update: A Redditor posted the following comment, which seems to verify the Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School connection:
This is from my dad's senior prom in May 1971! This was taken at Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School in Orange, Texas.
Apparently some time between signing the...

Multi-platinum Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Zz Top gave an unexpected surprise to customers at a mini mart: they exploded out of a beer refrigerator blasting their first new track in nearly a decade, I Got To Get Paid. Pretty awesome. The stunt is part of Zz Top's grassroots campaign for their Gang of Outlaws Tour kicking off this summer in Manchester, Nh. The video, currently the only spot to hear Zz Top's yet-to-be-released track, is featured on the YouTube channel for Jerimiah Weed, maker of "southern style" malt beverages. "We had fun making the I Got To Get Paid video and have determined while playing inside a walk-in cooler that we share quite a few fans in common with Jeremiah Weed," said Billy F. Gibbons, Zz Top’s iconic front man and certified guitar god. I Got To Get Paid is the Texas trio’s first new single in nine years,...

Usually, the MTV Newsroom Blog celebrates the birthdays of young starlets or up-and-coming musicians who have made a much bigger impact on the music world than their years would suggest. But today, we raise a cupcake to a true legend who will be blowing out some candles on a cake. Zz Top frontman Billy Gibbons turns 61 years old today, and the dynamic Texan has made a career out of being the steady guiding hand of one of the best bands in America.
Gibbons grew up outside of Houston and became a guitar prodigy at an early age. When he moved to Hollywood to attend Warner Brothers' art school, he befriended musicians like Roky Erickson (of Thirteenth Floor Elevators fame) and Jimi Hendrix (who once declared Gibbons as the next great guitar legend). Gibbons' first serious band, the Moving Sidewalks, even opened for the Jimi Hendrix Experience during their first American tour.
