27 years ago, Chris Rock resurrected his career with one of the greatest hours of stand-up comedy I've ever seen. I was a month away from graduating college when "Bring the Pain" aired after the HBO Saturday night premiere of "Congo" or something less sublime when Eddie Murphy's once-prized protege, who'd been ignominiously fired from "Saturday Night Live" after three underwhelming seasons, took the stage in Washington D.C. and became the George Carlin of his generation. It was a set fueled by fury at white folks pandering admiration of Colin Powell ("He speaks so well!"), Black folks' support of crackhead Marion Barry ("I can be Mayor!"), and, to put it diplomatically, racial anti-intellectualism. Sandwiched in between all of this was a brilliantly random rant about an HBO prison documentary in which a prisoner waxed poetic about the pleasures of "salad tossing." It was like watching Greg Maddux throw a complete-game shutout.

"The Chris Rock Show" was one of the edgiest, most uproarious variety shows on television. Powered by the pop cultural shockwave of his 1996 HBO stand-up special "Bring the Pain," Rock had attained the inconvenient-truth-telling stature of greats like Richard Pryor and George Carlin. He excoriated the white media for its condescending praise of the "well-spoken" Colin Powell and expressed hilarious disbelief that the crack-smoking Marion Barry could get re-elected Mayor of Washington D.C.. Suddenly, my mom knew that "salad tossing" was a prison euphemism for analingus.
HBO wisely snagged the comic for "The Chris Rock Show," which premiered on February 7, 1997, with the clear intent of pissing people off. His first guest was Johnnie Cochran nearing the end of his O.J. Simpson trial victory lap. I'll never forget Rock's reaction to the attorney's savvy quip that he prefers to defend "No Jays" instead of "O.J.s." He shot a...

Video of former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford smoking crack has finally been released to the public, offering an intimate glimpse into the private life of Canada’s own Marion Barry. In the video, Ford — who died in March — can be seen lighting up, and lighting into current Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau. “Trudeau right there, I’d like, I’d like to get that f–kin’ Justin Trudeau and shove my foot as far up his ass,” an offscreen voice is heard saying. "House of Cards" isn't just a critically praised show. It also crosses the line between fiction and political reality. Marion Barry Jr. -- the former mayor of Washington, D.C. -- and Frank Underwood -- Kevin Spacey's fictional politician on "House of Cards" -- had a lengthy Twitter conversation on Friday (Feb. 14).
Yes, a real (if often larger-than-life) politician and an imaginary one spoke publicly to one another.
As is fitting for such a discussion, the topics included "House of Cards" plots as well as real commentary on Barry. To his credit, Barry took the gentle ribbing in stride. Is it better or worse that the source isn't real?

“I’m not perfect,” Toronto Mayor Rob Ford told Matt Lauer on the Today show, with regard to his admission that he has smoked crack when in a “drunken stupor.” Perfection, maybe, is not a thing we look for in our leaders. But we do kinda like for them to stay away from illegal drugs, prostitutes, extramarital affairs and naughty sexts with underage employees. As we watch how our neighbors to the north handle this interesting development, we can’t help but be reminded of other powerful men (and yeah, it almost always is the men) in public office who were caught in similar nonpolitical quagmires. From JFK to Marion Barry, Bill Clinton to Anthony Weiner, there are a whole lot of them.

“The Children,” David Halberstam’s sprawling look at the history of the Civil Rights movement, has been optioned by character actor, writer and director Bill Kalmenson. Kalmenson is hoping to transform the look at the struggles of Dr. Martin Luther King, Rep. Does Toronto have its own Marion Barry? Gawker's slogan is "Today's gossip is tomorrow's news" -- and that's exactly how it worked when the site reported that Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has smoked crack, spawning follow-up reports by Canadian and U.S. media outlets. When Twins came out in 1988, it marked the first time Arnold Schwarzenegger — then known as the muscle-bound star of R-rated action movies like Predator and The Terminator — had tried his hand at headlining a comedy. It was his biggest hit to date. About a genetically perfect test-tube baby (Schwarzenegger) and his accidental low-life twin brother (Danny DeVito), Twins remains Schwarzenegger’s highest grossing comedy, and also ranks as one of the most successful films of DeVito and director Ivan Reitman’s careers. Adjusted for inflation, it pulled in a robust $218 million in the U.S.

You might not have noticed, but Eddie Murphy has a new movie in theaters today. That's a slightly loaded sentence: "A Thousand Words" was shot four years ago, has been barely screened for critics (those who have seen it have been vicious), and is being put into a mere 1900 theaters, nearly half as much as the week's biggest opening, "John Carter." And all this for a man who was once the brightest star on the planet.
But thanks to a string of bad movies (including bona-fide disasters such as "The Adventures of Pluto Nash," "Imagine That" and "Meet Dave"), Murphy is no longer a safe bet, and the kind of family fare that has been his bread and butter, and that turned off many of his fans, is now given token releases such as this.

Eddie Murphy may have dropped out as host of the Oscars, but he recently scored a major role as former Washington D.C. mayor Marion Barry in a made-for-hbo movie to be directed by Spike Lee. It figures to be a meaty, dramatic role for the prolific stand-up comic to sink his teeth into: Barry's career was filled with peaks and valleys, including his scandalous arrest for using crack-cocaine in 1990.

Eddie Murphy looks set to take the role of Marion Barry in Spike Lees’ development of the biopic of the controversial Washington Mayor. The project is being backed by HBO Films and is to have John Ridley on board for the script writing, he was involved on projects such as Three Kings and Red Tails. This role would see Murphy taking a departure from his usual affable, comic roles and would see him tackling a more demanding and intense role. No word on the direction that the script may take yet but it is reported that it could use the 1994 book “Dream City” written by Washington journalists Harry Jaffe and Tom Sherwood as one of the sources. Marion Barry served as mayor for Washington between 1979and 1991 and the later between 1995 and 1999, a controversial character, he was convicted after being videotaped smoking crack cocaine and served a 6 month jail term. Spike Lee has been putting together a biopic of Washington DC's former mayor Marion Barry for HBO, and has now brought on Eddie Murphy (Tower Heist) to star in the new film, which is based on the 1994 book "Dream City: Race, Power and the Decline of Washing DC" by Harry Jaffe and Tom Sherwood, and the 2009 documentary "The Nine Lives of Marion Barry." Barry served three straight terms as Mayor of the District of Columbia between 1979 and 1991. Despite being arrested and convicted for crack cocaine use in 1990, Barry ran again and won a fourth term between 1995 and 1999 and, despite no longer being in office, is still referred to with the nickname of DC's "Mayor-for-life." This isn't the first time that HBO tried to the get the project off the ground. Back in 2002, filming was set to begin from a script by Chris Rock and with Jamie Foxx starring as Barry.

Despite his rather tumultuous recent history, Eddie Murphy has more then made his mark on the comedy role. But it looks as if he may be stepping into drama in a new biopic that will focus on the life of former DC mayor Marion Barry. Once a prominent and influential civil rights activist, Barry’s life took a turn when he was convicted on drug charges for smoking crack cocaine. However, since then, he has continued to be an influence in D.C. politics, and serves as a council member even today.
The Washington Post reports that Spike Lee is pegged to direct the film for HBO, joined by writer John Ridley. Lee, Ridley and Murphy will all share in producing the film. Though Lee wishes to draw from several sources, he has reportedly brought on Harry Jaffe and Tom Sherwood, who wrote “Dream City,” a book about 1994 D.C.

HBO is developing a film about the life of former Washington, D.C. mayor Marion Barry, and it wants Eddie Murphy to play the lead role.
The project, first reported by the Washington Post, is still in its early stages, but it's already attracted some big names. Spike Lee is set to direct the movie, and John Ridley ("Three Kings," the upcoming "Red Tails") will write the screenplay. Murphy, Lee and Ridley would all serve as executive producers.
There's certainly plenty of material for a biopic in Barry's life. A civil-rights activist and member of the D.C. school board in the early 1970s, Barry was elected mayor of Washington in 1979 and was in his third term in office when he was infamously arrested for use and possession of crack. He served six months in federal prison -- and two years after being released, won a fourth term as mayor.

In their latest collaboration, director Spike Lee and writer John Ridley have teamed for an HBO biopic of Marion Barry, with Eddie Murphy attached to play the larger-then-life former Washington D.C. mayor. The HBO Films project, first reported by the Washington Post, is currently in development. Ridley is writing the script based on several pieces of source material, including the 1994 book Dream City by D.C. journalists Harry Jaffe and Tom Sherwood who will serve as consultants. Lee on board to direct. The two are executive producing with Murphy. HBO previously developed a Marion Barry biopic a decade ago with Jamie Foxx attached to star and Chris Rock to executive produce, but the project didn’t go forward. Barry, currently a member of the Council of the District Of Columbia, did two terms as a mayor of D.C., from 1979-91 and 1995-99, separated by a six-month stint in...

Ben Kingsley can't get enough of his "Hugo" costar Asa Butterfield, apparently. Their powerful dynamic in the Martin Scorsese 3-D period piece was easily one of the highlights of that movie, and viewers are about to be treated to another collaboration between the pair of actors.
THR reports that Kingsley is in talks to join "Ender's Game," Gavin Hood's adaptation of the science fiction classic from novelist Orson Scott Card. Butterfield was previously cast in the title role with "True Grit" actress Hailee Steinfeld flirting with the project as well. For his part, Kingsley would play a legendary war hero long presumed dead.

Well, here's a pretty big surprise. Eddie Murphy, who was poised for a comeback with "Tower Heist," seemed to have those hoped dash by the film underperforming at the box office, coupled with his association in the Ratnergate Oscar ceremony fallout, that led to the comic actor stepping down as the host. And just when we pegged Murphy as simply returning to his recent run of dreck -- he's got "Hong Kong Phooey" on the horizon for chrissakes -- we were hit out of left field with this. In what sounds like an amazing pairing, Spike Lee will take the helm of an untitled biopic on notorious Washington mayor Marion Barry, with Murphy to play the lead. The strange wild story of Barry is hard to encapsulate in a few sentences, but he started his career as civil rights activist before entering politics in the 1970s, and wound up serving...

Oscars or not, Eddie Murphy's campaign towards Hollywood prominence marches on.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the legendary funny man is slated to take on the more serious role of former longtime Washington, DC mayor Marion Barry. Murphy would play the mayor, who served from 1979 to 1991 and 1995 to 1999, in an HBO production directed by Spike Lee.
Barry has spent his public life as a prominent Civil Rights activist, leading marches on Washington before being elected to its school board and then city council. He controlled the political landscape in his city following his election in 1978, though corruption began rising and his personal demons, such as a drug habit, plagued his time in office.
Caught smoking crack cocaine in 1990, Barry served time in prison before returning to the city council -- in 1992, he ran under the slogan "He May Not Be Perfect, But He's Perfect for D.C." -- and...

Got my dirty mitts on the casting sheet for an upcoming new yet-to-be-titled Shonda Rhimes project.
