Though it has never managed to achieve anything beyond cult status in the Us (a planned American remake never made it past a pilot) Red Dwarf has steadily evolved in its native Britain from a quirky sci-fi sitcom into a veritable cultural institution as one of the most beloved comedy series of all time. Originally a short radio play titled Dave Hollins: Space Cadet, penned by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, Red Dwarf is a sci-fi slacker comedy about a lazy, drunken slob named Dave Lister (Craig Charles). Lister has no ambition, the personal hygiene of a homeless teenager, and subsists on a diet consisting entirely of curry and lager. He also happens to be the last human being in the universe.
Marooned in deep space aboard the mining ship Red Dwarf on which he served after three million years in hyper-sleep, Lister’s long, arguably fruitless journey back to »

Robert Llewellyn has revealed his joy at being reunited with his former Red Dwarf co-stars. The actor revealed that working with Craig Charles, Chris Barrie and Danny John Jules again was "brilliant fun". Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Llewellyn said of the reunion: "I had genuinely forgotten what a great time we all had. I've seen the guys regularly over the years but I don't think we'd been together like that for ten years. "It was brilliant fun - more than we'd (more) »

Cult Spy was in attendance at the premiere of the brand new Red Dwarf episodes for the Dave channel. It's been a decade since the boys from the Dwarf last graced our screens and hopes were high that the loveable smegheads could recapture the glory days. After all, surely writer Doug Naylor has had plenty of time to construct plenty of decent laughs? Sadly though, an initially humour-free script really lets Lister (Craig Charles), Rimmer (Chris Barrie), Cat (Danny John Jules) and Kryten (Robert Llewellyn) down in a massive way during the first part. The quality does improve dramatically as the story continues, but one can't help but feel that this whole endeavour fails to live up to the hype. Red Dwarf: Back To Earth follows on from the last two seasons of its BBC2 days. Not in terms of plot, but through a procession of painful attempts to generate »

Filming of two new episodes of cult TV series Red Dwarf began filming over the weekend on the set of Coronation Street. The two-part special, entitled Red Dwarf: Return To Earth, will see Dave Lister - played by Craig Charles - finally succeed in his desire to make a comeback to his home planet. As part of the plot, Lister's crew, made up of Rimmer (Chris Barrie), Kryten (Robert Llewellyn) and Cat (Danny John-Jules), go in search of him and instead bump into Charles's Corrie character Lloyd Mullaney in The Rovers Return. As part of the filming, Weatherfield's Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) also made an appearance. In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy at the end of last (more) »

I have very fond memories of Red Dwarf and I want them to stay that way, so news that it’s to return in a new two part series fills me with mixed emotions. Having never re-visited the crew since the first runs through the late 80s and 90s, my memories are hazy to say the least – that theme tune, ‘smeg heads’ and Craig Charles being monumentally unhygienic. And didn’t Holly change sex at some point? The point being, it was great at the time but a bit like the 70s Incredible Hulk or Kinder Eggs, I suspect it should be locked away in a nostalgic time capsule, revisited only by future generations as a museum piece. I would never recover fully if Chris Barrie’s Rimmer wasn’t the utterly hysterical bastard I remember him as. Speaking of Chris Barrie, the same goes for The Brittas Empire, and Gordon Brittas’ gloriously absurd, »

The Red Dwarf crew will be returning to Earth when the cult sci-fi show returns to TV later this year. Red Dwarf: Return To Earth will reportedly see last human Dave Lister (Craig Charles) achieve his life-long goal of touching down on his home planet. The two-part special, which has been commissioned by digital channel Dave, will reunite original cast members Charles, Danny John-Jules, Chris Barrie and Robert Llewellyn one decade after the iconic comedy ended. Speaking to The Sun, Barrie confirmed the plot, saying: "Yes, Lister’s dream is about to come true. But like everything in Red Dwarf, nothing is straightforward." Written and directed by Red (more) »
