Every horror story is already somewhat spoiled.
Whether it’s a movie, TV show, book, or short story, the horror classification alone is a tip off to the audience; a warning that despite any good fortune these characters appear to have, their lives are about to take a sharp downward turn.
So unfolds the first installment of Apple’s “The Changeling,” based on the 2017 horror novel by Victor Lavalle and adapted for television by Kelly Marcel. Episode 101 wears the disguise of romantic drama, the story of Apollo Kagwa (Lakeith Stanfield) and Emma Valentine (Clark Backo), a rare bookseller and librarian who fall in love. There’s even a parallel flashback to Apollo’s mother Lillian (Alexis Louder) and father Brian (Jared Abrahamson). Packaged with Melina Matsoukas’ direction, Marcell Rev’s cinematography, and Lavalle himself narrating lofty ideas about fate and identity, you could almost forget briefly forget that promised seed...

A specially signed copy of Harper Lee’s classic novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” could be the golden ticket to new beginnings for Apollo Kagwa’s (Lakeith Stanfield) family in a new trailer for the Apple TV+ series “The Changeling.”
“To Kill a Mockingbird?” Emma, who is played by Clark Backo, said in the clip titled “What a Day,” which you can watch above, released Thursday exclusively via TheWrap.
The scene in the clip began with Apollo coming home and seeing Emma holding their son Brian. Apollo, book dealer, showed Emma his latest find.
“That’s right, a true first edition, original cover. It’s in pristine condition — not a scratch,” Apollo responded. “Now, a book like that could get us… $10,000.”
In shock, Emma questioned, “10?”
Apollo then proceeded to go more in depth with how that particular copy is even more unique than what he led with, mentioning that Lee...

According to rudimentary Googling, Apple has a generally well-regarded parental leave policy. But according to the output at Apple TV+, there is anxiety in the water in Cupertino (or in the company’s Los Angeles offices).
Dropping this Friday, The Changeling is the second Apple TV+ series in five years blending fairy tale and horror to delve into maternal and paternal anxieties about nature, nurture and the price paid when parents are forced to leave babies behind to return to work.
Perhaps not as bluntly effective as Servant, The Changeling is an admirably ambitious series, especially on thematic levels, where it seems to be bursting with commentary on 21st century parenting. As storytelling, though, Kelly Marcel’s adaptation of Victor Lavalle’s novel is a mess. Though the series isn’t lurching through time and frames of reality without intent, its refusal to build any sort of momentum becomes increasingly frustrating.

Just ahead of its premiere, the drama based on Victor Lavalle’s bestselling novel sits at 75% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Sometimes, you really should be careful what you wish for. Bookshelves all across the world are full of fairytales that have warned countless children about the dangers of sticking their nose in places they don't belong and messing with powers far beyond their understanding, but these stories typically contort themselves to wrap things up with a happy ending. But what about when adults are the ones in need of a little lesson of their own? The original Grimms' Fairy Tales took a much darker and more disturbing approach, melding fantasy with outright horror to get their point across. Well, welcome to the much more modern take on fairytales for grownups.

A few weeks ago, we heard that the Apple TV+ series The Changeling – which is not a remake of the 1980 Peter Medak horror film of the same name (which you can watch at This Link), but rather an adaptation of author Victor Lavalle’s recent novel (and you can buy a copy of Lavalle’s novel Here) – is set to premiere on Friday, September 8th. With that date now exactly one month away, a trailer for The Changeling has arrived online, and you can watch it in the embed above.

People disappear, witches are real and there are portals that have never been traveled through before in Apple TV+’s “The Changeling,” a new drama series starring Lakeith Stanfield based on the book by Victor Lavalle.
What starts off as a “boy meets girl” story ends up playing out as a terrifying nightmare. A little over 30 seconds into the trailer, Clarke Backo’s character Emma meets what appears to be a witch next a body of water in Brazil.
“She told me I had three wishes,” Emma said “When it falls off my wrist, those three wishes will come true. Do not cut it.”
But for Apollo Kagway, Lakeith Stanfield’s character, wishes and witches are only found in fairytales.
“Emma, with me…all three of your wishes will come true,” Apollo said before snapping off the red string from Emma’s wrist.
“Would you even know if you crossed into a fairytale?...

Comedian and actor Deon Cole is stepping into the role of leading man with the new series Average Joe, which debuted on BET+ Monday. In the dark comedy-drama, Cole portrays Joe Washington, a husband and father whose regular blue-collar life gets turned upside down after his father dies and he discovers he stole $10 million from a Russian mob boss (Pasha Lychnikoff). In some ways, Cole, too, experienced a life change when he accepted the part and found himself number one on the call sheet for the first time in his career.
“It was extremely difficult because I’ve never been a lead,” Cole said during a special preview screening of the series held at Goya Studios during BET Weekend. “I’m used to just coming in, doing my part, jumping in my car and taking off, and going to go do stand-up. That was my routine with everything I’ve ever done.

You know a good pilot when you see one.
Because a good pilot is one that makes you desperate to know what will happen next. It's really that plain and simple. And Average Joe Season 1 Episode 1 is a good pilot.
An exciting setup, intriguing characters, and dynamics will always be a recipe for success.
The premise of Average Joe is pretty basic on its surface; while mourning his father's death, the titular character discovers said father had a whole other life involving drugs, money, and an angry mob looking for their Lamborghini.
It's basic but also a lot to process, and we're going through the motions of discovery right alongside Joe, who is every bit the average man the title describes.
By all accounts, Joe is a good man. He's got a loving wife and daughter and friends that he adores. His life doesn't seem extraordinary, but it's enough to keep him happy.

BET+’s new darkly comic thriller Average Joe may or may not be better than Netflix’s Ozark — I never loved Ozark, but maybe you did and so be it — but the gap between the two shows isn’t as great as the inevitable gap in coverage would seem to suggest.
Average Joe and Ozark are both highly derivative pieces of violent, ethically twisty pulp made somewhat distinctive by their regional specificity, irritatingly washed-out cinematography and sitcom-honed leading men repressing their natural timing to play a tamped-down everyman.
Though it doesn’t yet realize aspirations that could generously be described as Jim Thompson meets August Wilson — that’s a show I would very much watch — Average Joe has the feeling of a potential breakout for BET+, though it’s impossible to know what a “breakout for BET+” would mean in this landscape.
It’s an easily digestible genre offering that...

If you're looking for a new show to watch this summer, Average Joe should be on your list.
The BET+ original series premieres Monday, June 26, but you'll have to watch it weekly.
The streaming service is dropping the first two episodes on the premiere date before settling into one episode a week and concluding with a two-episode season finale on August 10.
Sometimes, releasing all the episodes at once works, but based on the trailer alone, we'll have plenty to discuss with this show.
Thankfully, Whitney Evans will be running point on reviews, so we'll be able to delve into the show's nuances.
Inspired by the life of creator Robb Cullen, Average Joe is a darkly comedic, intense one-hour drama set in The Hill district of Pittsburgh.
Blue-collar plumber, Joe Washington, discovers his recently deceased father lived a secret second life and stole millions of dollars from dangerous people just before he died.
