Robert Barnett, a renowned attorney in Washington, D.C. who’s also negotiated book deals for Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, is making negotiations “excruciating” for NBC News, according to a New York Daily News report. “The longer this goes on, the better it is for Brian and Bob (Barnett) and the worse NBC looks,” a network insider said. “It’s become excruciating for NBC executives who really just want to get past this moment and move on.” Also read:...

Negotiations with exiled Nightly News anchor Brian Williams have taken longer than anticipated. But NBC News chairman Andy Lack did reveal during a meeting last week with NBC News correspondents that he expects a resolution soon. And sources say that announcement could come this week. Ten years ago, filmmaker Errol Morris sat down to interview Robert S. McNamara, the Secretary of Defense who’d molded the country’s Vietnam War policies in the 1960s, for the Oscar-winning documentary, The Fog of War. McNamara, one of the “best and brightest” minds from the Kennedy Administration, had come to regret some of his decisions, and his expansive conversation with Morris, conducted through an Interrotron camera that allows the subject to look directly into the eyes of the audience, became a cautionary tale at a time when the country was revving up its war machine to take down...

New York — U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a favorite among liberals for her forceful advocacy for consumers and criticisms of the financial industry, has a book deal.
The Massachusetts Democrat has an agreement with Henry Holt and Company for a book, currently untitled, to be released in spring 2014, the publisher announced Wednesday.
Warren, a first-term senator elected last fall, will write about her childhood and early professional life, but the book will mostly be a "rousing call" for the middle class, according to Holt. She will describe her work on creating the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and her opposition to powerful interests in Washington and on Wall Street. She will also provide an insider's view of Congress.
"For decades, America's middle class has been chipped at, squeezed, and hammered," Warren, 63, said in a statement issued by Holt. "I am eager to tell the story about my experiences on the frontlines...

NBC News is getting ready to replace Ann Curry as a co-host of the "Today" show, the New York Times reported on Wednesday.
The paper wrote that Curry and NBC executives have begun discussing a transition out of her hosting role. The negotiations are expected to be done by the network's coverage of the Summer Olympics in July.
"That way, 'Today' can go to the games with a complete, comfortable team of co-hosts," a source familiar with the situation told the Times. Some observers predicted that a different arrangement could be announced as early as next week.
It is unknown whether Curry has accepted a deal yet. She is currently being represented by attorney Robert Barnett — who helped Christiane Amanpour negotiate her dual role at CNN and NBC News after leaving "This Week" — in the talks.

That’s a possibility, New York Magazine says in a report about his plans to write an autobiography as he enters “a legacy-burnishing phase of his career.” The magazine cites unnamed sources with “direct knowledge” of the situation who say Ailes, 71, could net an advance of as much as $4M from Rupert Murdoch’s HarperCollins. Ailes is being repped by Washington lawyer Bob Barnett. Fox News contributor Jim Pinkerton, who worked with Ailes on George H.W. Bush’s 1988 presidential campaign, will be co-author. For years, the American public was captivated by the story of Amanda Knox, an American student accused of brutally murdering her roommate, Meredith Kercher, while in Italy. After a high-profile trial including many appeals and four years spent in an Italian prison, Knox's guilty verdict was overturned in October, allowing her to go home to Seattle with her family.
Now, Knox has hired a high-powered attorney to help her negotiate a book deal about the harrowing experience. Robert Barnett will "represent her in discussions with various book publishers who have expressed an interest in Amanda writing a book," and help her family in "evaluating other opportunities as well."
Critics have suggested that it may be somewhat inappropriate for Knox to profit from the situation, given the assumption that she lost a friend in Kercher and that capitalizing on that death may be considered tasteless.

Amanda Knox, the U.S. woman cleared of murdering her roommate Meredith Kercher by an Italian court back in October, has hired attorney Robert Barnett to "represent her in discussions with various book publishers who have expressed an interest in Amanda writing a book," says spokesman David Marriot in a statement.
The statement also says Barnett will assist Amanda and her family in "evaluating other opportunities as well."
What those opportunities might be was not disclosed. One would imagine they would mostly be interviews.
Barnett has previously represented singer Barbra Streisand and presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama and writer Bob Woodward in book deals, among a long list of others.
Knox and her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were convicted in 2009 of murdering their flatmate Meredith Kercher, but the charges were overturned on appeal after forensic investigators criticized the police's gathering and use of scientific evidence in the original investigation.

Bestselling author Daniel Silva has left a long run at Putnam and made a 3-book deal at HarperCollins. I toldja that Silva left Icm to sign with D.C. attorney Robert Barnett at Williams & Connolly, in anticipation of shopping for the new deal. Silva was locked in by Harper senior vice president Jonathan Burnham and the books will be edited by executive editor Jennifer Barth. Not sure how much the deal was worth, but it is the latest in what will likely be a growing number of established authors leaving houses because those publishers are unwilling to pay the high advances their authors were accustomed to receiving. That happened with Janet Evanovich, who left St. Martin's Press after the publisher nixed an ask for $50 million for her next four books, even though she was the house's top fiction author.
