A crack team of commandos set out to snatch a captured scientist from the Nazis in this unimaginative adventure
Swedish film-maker Anders Banke has directed an unimaginative, stolidly old-fashioned second world war drama about a fictional Us-British mission to nab a Polish scientist from under the noses of the Nazis. It’s soullessly performed – as if the actors have been instructed to play it in manly, soldierly fashion, straight-backed, not a quiver of feeling – and there are a couple of howlingly bogus scenes. The firefight skirmishes in frozen snowy forests, however, are nicely done.

"I am offering you a way out." Good Deed Ent. has released the first official Us trailer for an indie WWII action thriller titled Enemy Lines, a shortened version of "Behind Enemy Lines" (which was already used for the 2001 film). In the frozen, war torn landscape of occupied Poland during World War II, a crack team of allied commandos – a British squad is matched with an American officer – are sent on a deadly mission behind enemy lines to extract a Polish rocket scientist from the hands of the Nazis. Starring Ed Westwick, with John Hannah, Tom Wisdom, Corey Johnson, Ekaterina Valdimirova, and Pawel Delag as Dr. Fabian. This looks like like your standard WWII action thriller with all the usual war movie tropes, and Nazis, plus a few big tanks and shoot outs. Doesn't seem particularly unique, but still might be worth a look. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Anders Banke's Enemy Lines,...

Alexey German Jr.’s Under Electric Clouds has become the first high-profile title to fall victim to Ukraine’s new distribution ban on Russian films and TV series, which came into effect last week.
One law entitled ¨On the Protection of the Information, TV and Radio Space of Ukraine¨ forbids all audiovisual works that contain the ¨popularization, agitation for, propagation about all law enforcement agencies, the armed forces, and other armed, military or security forces of the occupier state¨ from being shown on Ukrainian territory.
In addition, a law banning the distribution and showing of films and TV series produced in Russia after January 1, 2014, came into force at the same time, according to Unian Information Agency.
The ban coincided with the film’s theatrical opening by distributor Paradis in Russian cinemas and was all the more surprising given that German’s film was made as a co-production between Russia, Ukraine and Poland between Artem Vasiliev’s Metrafilm...

“Newsmakers” is an interesting case, being a Russian revisiting of a recent Hong Kong hit, helmed by an up and coming young Swedish director. The film is based on Johnny To’s 2004 outing “Breaking News”, and the Swede in question is Anders Banke, who scored a minor hit in 2006 with his vampires in the snow horror comedy “Frostbitten”. Proving that it is not only Hollywood which scours Asia for cinematic shortcuts, the film has nevertheless been garnering positive word of mouth for its hardboiled action and vaguely topical themes. Fans of the original, or indeed newcomers can now judge for themselves, as the film now arrives on region 2 DVD via Showbox Home Entertainment with a sadly bare bones release. The film kicks straight into the action, with a quiet street in the centre of Moscow turning into a warzone as a couple of traffic police accidentally trigger a gun battle between a gang of vicious,...

Remaking Johnny To's Breaking News, with a well-regarded Swedish director and a Russian setting, only a few years after the original had been in cinemas was always a strange decision. No matter, Anders Banke's Newsmakers has finally made its way to the UK on DVD and Blu-ray, with the support of a thoroughly action-focused trailer. As is often the way over here, the trailer has avoided any dialogue whatsoever so as to cunningly hide that this is a foreign, subtitled movie... Though dumbing down a release narks me, it does offer a different preview of the film that you may not have seen.
Check out the 'not safe for work' trailer below.
Newsmakers is out on UK R2 DVD and Blu-ray from 3rd May 2010 through Showbox Home Entertainment.

It’s a scenario nobody could have predicted in advance: Swedish director Anders Banke (Frostbite) directing a Russian remake of Hong Kong action film Breaking News by Johnnie To. But predictable or not it has happened, it’s called Newsmakers, it stars a veritable who’s who of prime Russian actors, it opens in April and the first teaser is on screens now in Russia. And thanks to the kind hearted Banke that teaser is also here on Twitch - in subtitled form, no less. You’ll find it below the break.

How’s this for an odd film pedigree: a remake of a Hong Kong action film, shot in Russian with largely Russian backing with a Swedish director. This is what you’ve got with Newsmakers.
A remake of Johnnie To’s Breaking News with the action transplanted to Russia - reportedly the first ever Russian remake of a Hong Kong film - the film is directed by young Swede Anders Banke, well known is these parts as the director of Swedish vampire film Frostbiten. Banke, it turns out, attended film school in Moscow and is totally Russian fluent, which makes sense of his directing a Russian language film, and the brilliant, period set opening to Frostbiten should put to rest any question as to whether he’s got the technical skills needed to tackle To. He very clearly does.
What Banke also has is a very strong cast. A quick...
