This story about Keri Russell and “The Diplomat” first ran in the drama issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
It’s a little surprising to learn that Debora Cahn did not write the lead role of her new Netflix show “The Diplomat” — U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom Kate Wyler — for Keri Russell. The role requires someone serious but shambolic, beautiful but uninterested in her beauty, smart but susceptible — and, of course, tangled in a love-hate marriage with her husband, Hal, played by lovable rogue Rufus Sewell.
Who else would you want but the woman we know as the charming title character in “Felicity” turned steely spy in “The Americans,” Keri Russell? You know — the adorable person you definitely do not mess with?
But Russell, 47, it turns out, was totally unavailable. “I wasn’t shopping around for a television show,” Russell said via Zoom from London, wearing big cool-dork...

“I am thrilled to be headed back for another round of this smart screwball show. Dare I say it’s fun? Thank you, Netflix, for giving us another shot,” said series star and executive producer Keri Russell.
Season one’s cast also includes Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh. Celia Imrie, Michael McKean, Nana Mensah, T’Nia Miller, and Miguel Sandoval guest star.
Debora Cahn created the series and serves as showrunner and executive producer. Additional executive producers include Janice Williams and Simon Cellan Jones (for episodes one and two).

Netflix has set an April 20, 2023 premiere date for the political drama The Diplomat. The eight-episode series stars three-time Emmy nominee Keri Russell (The Americans), and the first official photo features Russell as Ambassador Kate Wyler.
Netflix offers this description of The Diplomat:
“Kate Wyler is the new US Ambassador to the United Kingdom. She was supposed to go to Afghanistan. She’s great in a crisis zone. In a historic home… less so. War is brewing on one continent and boiling over on another. Kate will have to diffuse international crises, forge strategic alliances in London, and adjust to her new place in the spotlight — all while trying to survive her marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell).”

The eight-episode series, in which Russell’s character Kate Wyler is the new U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom, is from showrunner Debora Cahn of “The West Wing” and “Homeland.” Wyler has to contend not only with international crises, but her marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell).
“‘The Diplomat’ is a show about the transcendence and torture of long-term relationships,” said Cahn, who is also the show’s creator and an executive producer. “It’s hard to keep a relationship going, be it a marriage or a military alliance. Lena Dunham’s “Catherine Called Birdy” brings vibrancy and color to her adaptation of Karen Cushman’s beloved novel. Rich reds and blues fill the medieval world and fictional town of Stonebridge.
The film, nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and Critics Choice Award, stars Bella Ramsey as a 14-year-old who rebels against the patriarchy when her father, played by Andrew Scott, proclaims she is to be married off. When building the aesthetics, Dunham wanted to steer clear of the “grays and browns” associated with medieval history.
Speaking via Zoom from London, Dunham says, “This film is very much about the domestic life of women and children, and it was exciting to think about how we look at medieval life in a more feminine way.”
The film’s poster reflects everything about Dunham’s vision, but her mother, artist Laurie Simmons, designed her own artwork for the movie that didn...

Netflix has debuted a series of first-look images for the upcoming sequel for ‘Enola Holmes’ which sees the return of Millie Bobby Brown as Enola and Henry Cavill as her brother Sherlock Holmes.
Fresh off the triumph of solving her first case, Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) follows in the footsteps of her famous brother, Sherlock (Henry Cavill), and opens her own agency — only to find that life as a female detective-for-hire isn’t as easy as it seems. Resigned to accept the cold realities of adulthood, she is about to close shop when a penniless matchstick girl offers Enola her first official job: to find her missing sister. But this case proves to be far more puzzling than expected, as Enola is thrown into a dangerous new world — from London’s sinister factories and colourful music halls to the highest echelons of society and 221B Baker Street itself. TNT is daring to spin a dream, much like the titular character of its new effort, Will, and the network is hoping it can convince you that Shakespeare was a pop star of his era, as opposed to having entered the world as the boring crap High School teachers make you read. Perhaps more importantly, the show would also like you to believe that jolly, old Will was once a young man, and wasn’t born a marble bust with little hair and a fantastic beard.
These are indeed, more or less, true, but Will also wants you to: watch as Will scampers after a guttersnipe who picks his pocket, listen to The Clash, endure “punk rock” Elizabethans, and play along with anti-Catholic, anti-theater mustache-twirlers, and that makes it a little difficult to get your bearings.
Luckily, at its heart, this is a show that is mostly after simply reveling in Shakespeare.

Macdonald explains, “Black Sea is an old-fashioned adventure story, populated by a great set of characters. Now, as with any movie taking place on a submarine, we knew there were certain elements we needed to have: an explosion where the sub almost goes down, and a mutiny, for example.

One of the highly anticipated Galas playing this week at the 57th BFI London Film Festival, here’s the new trailer for director Stephen Frears’ Philomena.
Based on the 2009 investigative book by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee, Philomena focuses on the efforts of Philomena Lee (Dench), mother to a boy conceived out of wedlock – something her Irish-Catholic community didn’t have the highest opinion of – and given away for adoption in the United States. In following church doctrine, she was forced to sign a contract that wouldn’t allow for any sort of inquiry into the son’s whereabouts.
After starting a family years later in England and, for the most part, moving on with her life, Lee meets Sixsmith (Coogan), a BBC reporter with whom she decides to discover her long-lost son.
The film also stars Michelle Fairley, Barbara Jefford, Anna Maxwell Martin and Mare Winningham.

Ravi Coltrane/Matthew Garrison/Jojo Mayer David Fiuczynski Quintet ShapeShifter Lab, Brooklyn June 8, 2012
Saxophonist John Coltrane’s saxophonist son playing with the bassist son of Coltrane Quartet bassist Jimmy Garrison might impress cynics as a gimmick, but everyone who heard the fireworks their ad-hoc trio (and, eventually, quartet) set off at this concert knows that it’s as far from a gimmick as can be. It is, instead, two friends who have known each other since childhood taking advantage of their deep rapport to create a music of intuitive reactions that is a very modern descendent of what their dads were doing half a century ago.
Originally, Ravi Coltrane and Matthew Garrison were scheduled to work with veteran drummer Jack DeJohnette, but the latter canceled due to a minor illness. Having heard what Jojo Mayer achieved with them on short notice, it was hard to feel disappointed by the change.

Charlize Theron, Snow White and the Huntsman
Rupert Sanders / Kristen Stewart’s Snow White And The Huntsman Box Office: Why the Sharp Drop?
Well, surely both Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth have their fans. But when was the last time Charlize Theron had a major personal box-office hit? The answer is never. This is no put down, but a fact. No movie toplining Theron has ever earned more than $100m at the North American box office. Not even close. Not even adjusting for inflation.
Charlize Theron at the box office
Charlize Theron’s biggest personal box-office hit was her Oscar-winning star turn in Patty Jenkins’ Monster back in late 2003/early 2004. The story of a sex worker-turned-serial killer, the awards-season-propelled Monster raked in $34.46m, or about $45m today.

Snow White and the Huntsman, Chris Hemsworth / huntsman
Snow White and the Huntsman passed the $100m milestone at the North American box office on Monday, its 11th day out. Early estimates had Rupert Sanders‘ fantasy adventure starring Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, and Sam Claflin passing that milestone on Sunday, Day 10. However, Snow White and the Huntsman fell short of forecasts after suffering a steep 59% drop-off rate compared to its debut weekend. Why did that happen?
In all honesty, that’s impossible to say without a thorough investigation, the likes of which studios don’t bother conducting. The strongest possibilities that I can think of are the following:
a) There’s only so much money to go around in these tough economic times. Though not exactly targeting the same demographic group as Snow White and the Huntsman, two new entries — Ridley Scott’s Prometheus and the 3D animated feature...

Snow White and the Huntsman: Dark Forest monster vs. Kristen Stewart
Box office: Snow White and the Huntsman trailed both Ridley Scott / Michael Fassbender / Noomi Rapace’s horror sci-fier Prometheus and the Ben Stiller / David Schwimmer-voiced 3D animated feature Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted this past weekend at the North American box office. Directed by feature-film newcomer Rupert Sanders, Snow White and the Huntsman scored $23.05m according to box-office actuals found at Box Office Mojo. That’s down a hefty 59% from last weekend. [See also Box Office: Madagascar 3 Movie Beats Prometheus and Prometheus: An Unqualified Domestic Box-Office Hit?.]
Starring Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, and Sam Claflin, Snow White and the Huntsman was expected to reach $26-$28m over the weekend according to predictions and early Friday estimates. The fantasy adventure would thus pass the $100m milestone in North America after only 10 days. As a result of its steep attendance drop, that didn’t happen. Swath‘s cume after 10 days reached $98.53m.

Kristen Stewart / Snow White: Snow White and the Huntsman Snow White and the Huntsman sequel in the works and on a fast track? That’s the growing rumor. As early as July 2011, Swath (and Alice in Wonderland) producer Joe Roth said that Snow White and the Huntsman was to be the first feature in a trilogy. In early April 2012, NBC Universal honcho Ron Meyer mentioned a sequel "based on" the character of the Huntsman, played by The Avengers‘ Chris Hemsworth. A couple of weeks later, Universal reportedly approached David Koepp to write a follow-up to the fantasy adventure tale. And that was about two weeks before Snow White and the Huntsman beat forecasts when it debuted to the tune of $56.21m last weekend. Now, Universal has been "in talks" with Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders to come back for a planned sequel, reports Deadline.com. A director of commercials,...

Box Office: Snow White and the Huntsman (photo, Kristen Stewart). Trailing both Ridley Scott / Michael Fassbender / Noomi Rapace’s Prometheus and the 3D animated feature Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman took in $7.5m on Friday in North America as per studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. That’s down a hefty 63% compared to its opening day a week ago. [See also Box Office: Prometheus / Madagascar 3.] Starring Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, and Sam Claflin, Snow White and the Huntsman was expected to reach $26m for the weekend, thus passing the $100m milestone in North America after only 10 days. Now it remains unclear whether or not Swath will reach that mark by Sunday evening, as its Friday gross was about 8% less than early estimates indicated. On the positive side, Snow White and the Huntsman was up 84% on Friday compared to the day before. Apart from the expanded Moonrise Kingdom,...

Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart Snow White and the Huntsman, which "premiered" last Friday in North America, has already passed the $100 million milestone at the worldwide box office. Directed by feature-film first-timer Rupert Sanders, the period fantasy adventure stars The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2‘s Kristen Stewart, The Avengers‘ Chris Hemsworth, Prometheus‘ Charlize Theron, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides‘ Sam Claflin. According to Box Office Mojo, as of Tuesday Snow White and the Huntsman‘s partially updated worldwide box-office cume stood at $106.45m. I say "partially" because although domestic box-office figures have been updated daily, international figures are estimates up to Sunday. For the record: Snow White and the Huntsman has taken in $67.15m in the Us/Canada and (as of Sunday) an estimated $39.3m in 45 markets. Swath easily topped the North American box office last weekend, though, screening at fewer theaters (and in...

[See also Snow White And The Huntsman International Box Office, Snow White And The Huntsman vs. Mirror Mirror.] According to box-office actuals found at Box Office Mojo, Swath took in $56.21m at 3,773 venues, or a tiny bit less than studio estimates. Its per-theater average was $14,900, particularly remarkable for a 2-hour+ 2D movie. Also worth noting is that Snow White and the Huntsman grossed more than the next three movies (Men in Black III, The Avengers, Battleship) combined. It also grossed more than twice Men in Black 3‘s second-weekend take, $28.07m (-48% — which isn’t really bad, considering that the previous Sunday had preceded a major holiday). Chris Hemsworth‘s huntsman, the dwarves, Snow White and the Huntsman Box Office: Julia Roberts / Lily Collins’ Mirror Mirror vs. Kristen Stewart / Charlize Theron’s Snow White And The Huntsman At the international box office, Snow White and the Huntsman opened with a strong $39.3m at 4,487 venues in 45 markets. Swath was no. 1 in 30 of those territories, trailing either 20th Century Fox / Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, which also features Swath‘s Charlize Theron, or Men in Black 3 in most of the other markets. Swath‘s top territory was the United Kingdom, where it scored $5.5m. Here’s the breakdown for Snow White and the Huntsman‘s other top markets: Mexico with $4.4m, Germany $4m, Spain $3.8m, South Korea $3m, and Brazil $2.5m. Prince Charming Sam Claflin, Snow White and the Huntsman Snow White And The Huntsman 2012: Domestic Box Office 1st Post-the Avengers Hit It’s also worth noting that Snow White and the Huntsman is the second action / adventure movie featuring women in key roles — Kristen Stewart‘s Snow White, Charlize Theron‘s Evil Queen Ravenna — that has performed strongly at the domestic box office. Starring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, Gary Ross’ The Hunger Games is one of 2012′s biggest box-office hits, having to date collected $398.74m. Meanwhile, with the exception of Disney’s all-star The Avengers, male-dominated action / fantasy flicks have mostly been box-office disappointments — or downright bombs — at the Us/Canada box office, e.g., Andrew Stanton / Taylor Kitsch’s John Carter with a cume of $72.58m; Will Smith / Tommy Lee Jones’ Men in Black III, which opened about $10-15m below expectations; another Taylor Kitsch action movie,...

Chris Hemsworth, Snow White and the Huntsman Kristen Stewart/Snow White And The Huntsman Box Office For comparisons sake: Will Smith / Tommy Lee Jones’ Men in Black III collected $54.59m last weekend. If estimates are accurate, Kristen Stewart / Charlize Theron / Chris Hemsworth‘s Snow White and the Huntsman took in nearly $2m more. Now, bear in mind that the Barry Sonnenfeld-directed MIB3 had no less than five major advantages over the Rupert Sanders-directed Swath: Will Smith, a consistent box-office draw in different types of roles and film genres for the last 15 years, e.g., drama (The Pursuit of Happyness), action (Bad Boys II), thriller (I, Robot), comedy (Hitch), fantasy (Hancock), science-fiction / horror (I Am Legend). Instead, the $170m-budgeted Swath pulled in a remarkable $56.25m at 3,773 locations according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Another feat: Snow White and the Huntsman‘s grosses were bigger than the combined take of the next three films on the domestic box-office chart: Men in Black III ($29.3m), The Avengers ($20.27m), and Battleship ($4.81m). Snow White and the Huntsman: Kristen Stewart / Snow White in Joan of Arc armor Snow White and the Huntsman‘s box office performance in North America on Friday, June 1, has far surpassed the expectations of both Universal Pictures and box-office prognosticators. Directed by Rupert Sanders, and starring Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, and Sam Claflin, Snow White and the Huntsman was expected to earn between $30m-$40m on its first weekend. But it now seems Swath may reach $55m after collecting an estimated $20.3m at 3,773 locations. Although that’s slightly down from the "roughly estimated" $21m reported last night, Swath‘s $20.3m is still more than the combined take of the next six movies on the domestic box-office chart, as pointed out by Box Office Mojo‘s Ray Subers. Snow White and the Huntsman: Charlize Theron / Ravenna Snow White and the Huntsman‘s box office performance in North America, if early estimates are accurate, has surpassed the expectations of both Universal Pictures and box-office prognosticators. It turns out the period adventure fantasy may reach $56m after collecting an estimated $21m at 3,773 locations on Friday. The above early, rough estimates were found at Deadline.com. Once again, if accurate, that also means Snow White and the Huntsman is — at least on when it comes to opening weekends — a much bigger box-office hit than Men in Black III. Snow White and the Huntsman: Charlize Theron Snow White and the Huntsman box office: Universal Pictures may finally have a good-sized hit in its hands, if (very) early estimates of $19-$21m for Friday (up from $17m-$19m a few hours ago) and $50-$56m (up from $48m-$52m) for the weekend pan out. Snow White and the Huntsman movie Snow White and the Huntsman box office: Starring Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, and Sam Claflin, Rupert Sanders‘ Snow White and the Huntsman opened strongly at Thursday midnight screenings in North America, grossing an estimated $1.38m at only 1,092 theaters. That’s nearly 40% more than the $1m earned by the Sam Worthington 3D fantasy Wrath of the Titans at nearly 1,500 sites, and more than twice the take of the Tim Burton / Johnny Depp comedy Dark Shadows ($550k at 1,600 locations). Another box-office comparison: Snow White and the Huntsman‘s $1,266 per-theater average far surpassed that of Will Smith / Tommy Lee Jones’ Men in Black III‘s $694 at 2,232 locations last week. Although it’s true that all things being equal, the fewer the number of theaters the higher the per-theater average should be, that doesn’t explain an 80% higher average for Swath. Kristen Stewart 2012: Snow White and the Huntsman Swath Reviews Pt.5: Kristen Stewart / Charlize Theron Final Charlize Theron / Kristen Stewart reviews for their performances in Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman. In the fantasy adventure, Stewart plays Snow White; Theron, a Best Actress Oscar winner for Monster, plays the Evil Queen Ravenna, who needs to eat Snow White’s beating heart in order to remain young and beautiful, and, while at it, get rid of the competition. The Cabin in the Woods / The Avengers‘ Chris Hemsworth co-stars as the Huntsman; Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides‘ Sam Claflin plays Prince Charming. The positive notices for Charlize Theron — and there were quite a few — weren’t unexpected.
