The play by Richard Nelson 'Hyde Park on Hudson' which blends history and speculation is being made into a movie and is now in production. History was in the making when the King and Queen arrived at President Roosevelt's upstate New York home on the Hudson River, with a promise of politics and a picnic. No reigning British monarch had ever been to the United States before George VI's visit in 1939, just before a new world war broke out. It was during this June weekend visit, that the scandalous love affair between President Roosevelt and his cousin Margaret Suckley aka Daisy becomes apparent. Bill Murray is the only actor cast in the movie so far, which will be directed by South African Roger Michell, who directed Peter O'Toole in his Oscar-nominated performance in Venus (2006), and is known for Notting Hill (1999) and Changing Lanes (2002). LONDON -- Pete Travis' "Endgame", the director's sophomore outing after "Vantage Point", has begun shooting with a cast that reads like a who's who of hot British talent alongside Oscar winner William Hurt.
Hurt is joined by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jonny Lee Miller, Mark Strong, Derek Jacobi and Timothy West in the thriller penned by BAFTA- and Emmy-winning screenwriter Paula Milne.
The film is executive produced by David Aukin and Channel 4 head of drama Liza Marshall, and produced by Hal Vogel for Daybreak Pictures.
"Endgame" details the story of the clandestine and high-risk talks that took place between key Afrikaners and African National Congress exiles, which brought about the end of apartheid and the release of Nelson Mandela. The film is shooting in the U.K. and South Africa.
The project is being presold by Penny Wolf on behalf of global media company Target Entertainment during the upcoming Marche du Film at Cannes.

LONDON -- U.K.-based T.V. production banner Tinopolis is restructuring its production subsidiary Mentorn to accommodate a new permanent home for veteran producers David Aukin and Hal Vogel under the banner Daybreak Pictures.
Mentorn said Thursday it is moving its drama output across to Daybreak Pictures, which will be headed by current Mentorn drama chief Aukin and executive producer Vogel.
Daybreak aims to ramp up Mentorn's drama output based on contemporary events while also branching out to include fictional dramas and serials.
Aukin will serve as Daybreak managing director while Vogel and Mentorn CEO John Willis will be directors of the new company.
Tinopolis managing director Arwel Rees becomes Daybreak's chairman, with the company falling under the Mentorn Group umbrella.
The new-look setup comes hot on the heels of news that U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 has commissioned the Daybreak team to produce a drama based on the Alexander Litvinenko poisoning, with Peter Kosminsky writing and directing.
Kosminsky and Aukin most recently worked together on the Mentorn production "The Government Inspector", which garnered a trio of TV BAFTAs including a best writer nod for Kosminsky.

Miramax Films has acquired the North American, Latin American and German distribution rights to Mrs. Henderson Presents, Stephen Frears' period film about an eccentric widow, played by Judi Dench, who buys a theater in London on the eve of World War II and turns it into the Windmill, famous for its nude revues. A Pathe Pictures-BBC Films production, the film also stars Bob Hoskins. It was written by Martin Sherman (Bent) and produced through Heyman-Hoskins Prods. by Norma Heyman and executive produced by Hoskins and David Aukin. Miramax paid about $10 million for the acquisition, which was sought by several bidders since a preview reel began circulating in November at the American Film Market.

EDINBURGH, Scotland -- It's Sept. 11, 2001, and a man whispers into a telephone: "I love you. I love you". But it's neither a victim of that dreadful day nor a survivor. It's one of the perpetrators. In Channel 4's riveting drama about the events leading up to the atrocities of Sept. 11, Ziad Jarrah and his cohorts are portrayed as ordinary mortals whose fanaticism emerges from everyday lives that are otherwise quite mundane.
The decision by director Antonia Bird and writers Ronan Bennett and Alice Perman not to demonize the men who committed the most heinous crime in recent memory is a brave one. Indeed the film's evenhandedness may offend some. It's unhelpful, however, to dismiss the men as monsters and instructive to be reminded that great evil may be rooted in heartfelt delusion. This is a film of great intensity and should find a wide audience for its considerable cinematic merit and worthwhile contribution to understanding the incomprehensible. It airs Thursday on the U.K.'s Channel 4.
As in Channel 4's previous docudramas Sunday, The Deal and Omagh, the script for The Hamburg Cell is based on "known facts and actual events" and strives to portray them objectively. It follows the development of a cell of Muslim revolutionaries established in the German city of Hamburg five years before the World Trade Center's twin towers were brought down.
At the center is Jarrah, a rich man's son from Lebanon who is studying dentistry. More secular than Muslim, Jarrah falls for Aysel (Agni Tsangaridou), an independent Turkish student who objects when an Islamic group targets him for induction.
Karim Saleh plays Jarrah with the soulful innocence that Al Pacino brought to the young Michael Corleone. Like the Godfather's son, Jarrah's bland features and timorous smile mask an inner turmoil hinted at only in his haunted eyes.
Gradually, he is drawn into the clutches of a mosque whose members espouse violence as the proper means to wage the jihad they see as a requirement of their interpretation of Islam. He remains ambivalent, seemingly earnest in his affection for Aysel and confessing that, having attended Catholic school, he was an indifferent Muslim. But the imam tells him sharply that he must say his prayers. He was in an infidel society, and he must not let himself be alone.
As he becomes closer to fellow initiates Mohamed Atta (Kamel) and Ramzi bin al Shibh (Omar Berdouni), the incessant radicalization begins to take hold. The modern world is a confusion. The modern world wants to take God from him. Every able-bodied man must train for the jihad.
Atta in particular is convinced. A Palestinian, he is a lonely and ascetic man who chides his friends for taking a beer or even wearing their shirts open. He longs to return to his homeland but when he visits, his cold and distant father scolds him for not pursuing a doctorate, having just obtained his master's degree, and his mother pines for grandchildren. Back in Germany, whatever drives his anger occupies him fully.
Soon the three students are in Afghanistan being trained by al-Qaida. When they return, the Hamburg cell leaders flatter and cajole them to join their violent plans. With growing and devastating suspense, the film shows the tragic path of fanatics who have lost sight of their objectives and redoubled their efforts to get there.
Throughout the building tension, the film offers reminders of how evidence of the impending assault was overlooked and how warnings of the dangers were not heeded. With the terrible Sept. 11 images seen only fleetingly at the beginning, the film ends with the perpetrators disappearing through an airport departure enclosure.

LONDON -- Pathe U.K. and BBC Films have teamed to finance Mrs. Henderson Presents, to be directed by Stephen Frears and produced by Norma Heyman, the companies said Thursday. Pathe and BBC Films will co-finance the Heyman Hoskins production with Heyman's partner Bob Hoskins, who will star in the picture alongside Judi Dench. The film will be executive produced by former Channel Four head of film David Aukin, with Hoskins also taking an executive producer credit.
Once a sure bet with the art house crowd and book-reading adult audiences, movies based on the works of Jane Austen are a recent tradition that Canadian filmmaker Patricia Rozema messes around with in "Mansfield Park". The Miramax film premiered at the Montreal Film Festival and now faces a chilly boxoffice climate crowded with "prestigious" productions of all persuasions.
In some ways successful in her ambitious combination of the 1814 novel -- which is in its feature-film debut, though faithfully done a few years back as a BBC miniseries -- and biographical elements from Austen, Rozema ultimately lets her revisionary agenda overwhelm the natural rhythms and refined wisdom that radiates from the author's works.
Incorporating material from Austen's "letters and early journals," Rozema creates Fanny (Frances O'Connor), a poor relation who moves in with her rich uncle (Harold Pinter), aunts (Lindsay Duncan, Sheila Gish) and numerous cousins, including the somewhat rebellious Edmund Jonny Lee Miller). Although she's made to feel inferior and not encouraged to seek a mate, Fanny turns into a writer and woman of wit, ambitious but impressionable.
The action takes place in and around a titular mansion in a privileged environment maintained by the owner's overseas business that uses slaves. Fanny herself is a slave to convention and good decorum but kindles a flame in the heart of easily defeated Edmund. The moral atmosphere gets even stormier and sensual currents flow around the pair when brother and sister Henry (Alessandro Nivola) and Mary (Embeth Davidtz) come for a visit.
While Edmund falls for Mary, she plays a number of angles, including a mild flirtation with Fanny. Eventually disaster strikes when tricky Henry proposes to Fanny and she's forced to run away.
With her energy and generally sensible persona, O'Connor is the film's biggest asset as the plucky but complicated heroine, who is ultimately unfazed by certain shocking complications on the way to a happy ending.
