10 Most Fascinating 'End of the World' Movies

8 November 2009 4:59 AM, PST | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

There are many theories, ideas or should I say 'schools of thought' on how the world would end. At the height of the Cold War, nuclear annihilation ranks at the very top. While others argue it will not be man who will destroy the world (directly) but - an epidemic of global proportions (most probably from a potent strain of virus - think: I am Legend) or severe climactic change (another ice age perhaps? That would be Day After Tommorow right?) or mechanical uprising (The Terminator, anyone?) or even attack from the outside - conquering aliens (Mars Attacks!) or perhaps an asteroid. And let's not forget zombies!

How to dress like The Mad Hatter this Halloween

20 October 2009 7:02 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

Alice in Wonderland might not be released until next year, however Tim Burton’s re-imagining (isn’t that what he called his remake of Planet of the Apes?) of the Lewis Carroll classic is already earning excited buzz (we featured a replica costume item as last week’s eBay find, see Related Content right). And with good reason. It boasts Burton’s customary gothic quirkiness, a stellar cast including Burton regulars (and incidentally his partner) Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp and for fashion followers, costumes from the inimitable Colleen Atwood. And though Aiw might still be months away, Atwood’s latest bizarre and imaginative screen outfits promise to be a hit this Halloween, so much so that Diy fashion site ThreadBanger.com has produced a video guide to creating your own version of the outfit sported by Depp’s Mad Hatter. Click over to check it out. »

The Victorian gothic look from Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

30 September 2009 4:20 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

Director Tim Burton and his long-time onscreen muse Johnny Depp are famous for their offbeat and eccentric collaborations. Throughout their six movie union, from Edward Scissorhands to Sleepy Hollow, they have mastered the creation of outlandish characters and macabre fairytale worlds and often with the help of Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood. Once again invited into the Burton/ Depp world for 2007’s big screen adaptation of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Atwood had to craft a look for the popular Stephen Sondheim musical. »

Tues Top Ten: Best of Year (Thus Far)

14 July 2009 3:24 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

We're not technically halfway through the year (oops. missed that opportunity) but let's say January releases don't really count. That's not a stretch to say. If the year ended today here's what my top ten would like like (alpha order) with the Best Picture nominees in red. This isn't really the warm up to Tfe's awards (unless the remainder of the year is hugely disappointing) it's more like lacing up your gym shoes before heading out to the warm-up. We hope.

Top Ten as of July 14th

Fashion fix of the week: Persol men's classic PO649 sunglasses from Public Enemies

8 July 2009 3:40 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

With a record amount of rain hitting the UK yesterday, sunglasses might seem like an optimistic choice for this week’s fashion fix, but hey! We’re certain the sun will start shining soon and even if it doesn’t, sunglasses make a style essential. And we’ve got a pair with timeless class, a fantastic lookalike for those worn by Johnny Depp as infamous bank robber John Dillinger in 1930s gangster epic Public Enemies. Simply throw on a fedora as well and you’re instantly one seriously smooth gent – just don’t go robbing any banks!

The real sunglasses worn by Depp were authentic 1930s specs picked up by the movie’s hard-working wardrobe department led by Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood and have appeared on eBay since their big screen outing though failed to sell (see here). This led us to hunt down a lookalike and we’re »

'Public Enemies'

1 July 2009 9:20 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

All the elements for an Oscar-winning epic are present in Public Enemies. Oscar-nominated directed Michael Mann? Check. Prestigious cast led by Johnny Depp and Christian Bale? Check. Biopic with a flawlessly rendered historical setting? Check. However, Mann’s drama about notorious gangster John Dillinger fails to use all it has in its impressive arsenal to move beyond its B-movie roots and become a truly great, or even a very good, film.

Johnny Depp has played antiheroes before, most famously as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean and its sequels, but his has rarely shown the hard edge occasionally on display in Public Enemies. Dillinger was a charmer, a man seemingly as concerned with his image and celebrity as the take from his heists, but Depp doesn’t hesitate to show the gangster’s colder side that audiences witness from the first few moments of the film.

Public Enemies Review: Robbed of a Solid Script

1 July 2009 6:48 PM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) was a charismatic criminal who lived for the moment, and whose lightning raids on financial institutions across Middle America made him a top law enforcement target. By robbing only banks and not everyday people, Dillinger became a bit of a folk hero to much of the downtrodden masses. For a while, Dillinger appeared both unstoppable and untouchable. In the event that the cops did manage to arrest him, the cool crook would still find a way to break out of jail pretty quickly. Dillinger's charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone, including the coat-check girl who eventually became the love of his life, Billie Frechette (Marion Cotillard). While Jd's adventures thrilled many, J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) was not one of his fans. However, Hoover hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw's capture as a way to elevate his fledgling Federal Bureau of Investigation. »

eBay find: Johnny Depp's screen-worn sunglasses from Public Enemies

26 June 2009 5:08 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

The first image of him as The Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s upcoming Alice in Wonderland shows him on typically quirky turf (how can an orange frizzy afro and matching eyebrows Not look kinda odd?), yet Johnny Depp’s certainly flashing his fashion credentials in gangster drama Public Enemies, due out next week. As notorious 1930s bank robber John Dillinger, Depp cuts a dash in gorgeously tailored three-piece suits and more fedoras than you can shake a stick at (if you’re into that kind of thing) and we’ve uncovered one of the more eye-catching items sported by Depp as America’s Public Enemy Number One up for auction on eBay – his vintage sunglasses.

Depp dons two different pairs in the Michael Mann flick and this one is described by the seller as “authentic 1930s vintage faux tortoise shell/plastic sunglasses with amber smoke tinted glass lens.” They are one of a kind, »

2009 Oscar Predictions, The Costumes. The Screenplays.

7 April 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Chapeaus, Gowns and Suits. Oh my!

Three time Oscar winner Milena Canonero doing The Wolf Man duty. Black is the new Black.

Oscar's technical branches are more similar to the acting branch than most people realize. The costuming branch is no exception. They have their pets who can't thread a needle without getting nominated, and other designers who they strangely ignore repeatedly despite fine work. And like Oscar's acting branch they have "hooks" that they fall for with great regularity. Certain time periods are baitier than others and so forth. Iconic gowns help but are no guarantor. And like the acting branch, they tend to prefer realism and authenticity to leaps of imagination and genre stylization. Most of the time anyway... they don't have quite as many genre prejudices.

Best Costume Design Predictions feature the usual suspects: Sandy Powell, Colleen Atwood and Milena Canonero. Between them they have 7 Oscars (gasp). They can't be stopped! »

The Curious Case of the White Queen

2 March 2009 5:30 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Benjamin Button isn't the only fictional character that was aging in reverse last year. We first heard that Anne Hathaway was cast as The White Queen in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland in October. It exhibited the usual flurry of excitement (big star joins other stars in high profile project) but few mentioned that the elusive character just lopped off a few decades of living.

The White Queen is nearly aways portrayed as an old woman. Maureen Stapleton was 58 when she played her,Penelope Wilton 52, Carol Channing "jam tomorrow, jam yesterday" 64, Eva Le Gallienne was 56. Nanette Fabray and Louise Fazenda were the youngest I could find, at 46 and 38 respectively, when they donned the crown in 1966 and 1933. Anne Hathaway will only be 27 when the movie arrives.

Anne's incongruous youth for this role first occurred to me this week when Anne wore bridal white to the Oscars and was obviously the »
