Drawing on Your Nightmares: Nihilism and Horror

10 December 2009 6:22 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

I’m sorry to have gone delinquent on my posts here, because this has been a crazy year for me and horror. My Solomon Kane series "The Castle of the Devil" was well received, and I pushed that adventure story about as far as I could, with the help of Mario Guevara’s macabre visuals. I made it to Crypticon in Seattle and met Adrienne Barbeau and Tom Atkins, toured the sites where the Green River Killer’s victims were found, and read and watched as much horror as I could get my hands on.

As my previous posts show, I’m a little old-fashioned, though not completely retro. I’m writing this while watching The Ring (in this case I buy American) and dying to see the final episode of "Dexter" season four this weekend, and the last comic I read was the new issue of Hack/Slash from »

Night of the Creeps (Review)

11 November 2009 2:20 AM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Night Of The Creeps Directed by Fred Dekker The debut feature by writer/director Fred Dekker, Night Of The Creeps wears its B-Movie status proudly on its sleeve. Dekker borrows elements of all his favorite horror and sci-fi movies and blends them together creating one of the most enjoyable and underrated films from the 80's. Paying homage to everything from plots, themes and to those that have created them, Night offers you creepy crawlers, alien parasites, zombies, extra-terrestrials, sorority/fraternity scenarios and a 50's opening prologue involving an axe murder. Dekker goes so far as to pay tribute to his idols by naming every character after a famous filmmaker. There is the love interest, Cynthia Cronenberg, a police sergeant named Raimi, three other characters named Miller, Carpenter, Landis and of course, Detective Cameron, played by Tom Atkins. Atkins steals the show, delivering the film's most memorable lines including the classic: »

Night Of The Creeps (DVD/Blu-ray Review)

3 November 2009 2:20 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Back in August 1986, two horror movies debuted on the same Friday in New York-area theaters. The film that got more publicity, and that most of the genre fans I knew wanted to see, was The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. But one pal and I were more interested in checking out the one that promised a “Free Creep Prevention Mask” to the first patrons on opening night.

So we paid our admission, were each handed a paper surgical mask with the Night Of The Creeps logo emblazoned on it, took our seats—and enjoyed one of the year’s most surprisingly entertaining fright features, one that homaged practically every subgenre imaginable, yet kept a sure hand on its tone and never descended into spoofery. Those who caught Creeps in its limited theatrical run (during which it played a few cities as Homecoming Night) formed the beginnings of a cult following that »

Terrifyingly Gnarly #18 – House Of The Devil’s A.J. Bowen

28 October 2009 5:38 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

To me, it’s fitting that in our lengthy conversation, actor A.J. Bowen tells me he was close to answering the phone with Tom Atkins’ famous line, “Thrill Me.” With his phenomenal facial hair (which I open the interview with) and true talent showcased in our beloved genre, I can see him attaining the heights of that classic ’80s hero. This Friday, Ti West’s much anticipated House Of The Devil reaches theaters (you can currently check it out on VOD, and you should!) where you can see Bowen in a relatively small but integral and very fun role. Punch drunk in love with the film since I saw it earlier this year at Tribeca and a huge admirer of Bowen’s excellent work in The Signal, I knew I’d have to get him talking about it all. So read on, and get excited about the lumberjack resembling future of horror, »

Fred Dekker Talks Night of the Creeps

28 October 2009 5:42 AM, PDT | HugAZombie | See recent HugAZombie news »

Night of the Creeps finally made its way into DVD and Blu-Ray yesterday after years of ineplicably sitting on Sony's shelves for about 23 years. Creeps is a space/zombie flick from 1986 that made contemporary zombie-slug comedies like Slither possible. In a recent interview, writer/director Fred Dekker explained how the Night of the Creeps DVD came about.

[DVD producer] Michael [Felsher] is a force to be reckoned with. He's a huge fan of both of my first two films, Night of the Creeps and The Monster Squad, and of the two, I think he said Night of the Creeps was the one he wanted the most to turn into a DVD. He worked for years at Anchor Bays and I'm sure he spent years bugging Sony about it. At some point, he talked Lionsgate into doing The Monster Squad DVD. That was a great disc and, for the fans, it had some great stuff on it. »

50 Influential Scream Queens: Part 2

27 October 2009 10:57 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Before I launch into the conclusion of my 50 Influential Scream Queens (read part 1 here), please let me remind you that this list is based upon my personal taste, and my personal taste alone. I didn't poll 100 Fango readers, the Fango staff or any other form of 'industry professionals'. It's all opinion, so if you feel I've wronged a certain actress by excluding them from the list, don't leap to brand the entire Fango crew 'vile'.  I probably just don't personally find their work to be that influential. Either that or I'm just ignorant to their accomplishments!

25. Mia Farrow: Mia's genre work may be a bit limited, but that doesn't change the fact that Rosemary's Baby will forever be regarded as one of the creepiest films in history. Farrow's portrayal of Rosemary Woodhouse is harrowing to say the least, and will always remain (in my mind) one of the best performances the genre has seen. »

This Week In DVD: October 27th

Rob Hunter loves movies.  He also loves working for the BBC where his job entails erasing old show master tapes because they don't have the foresight to know that people may want to watch them again someday. These two joys come together in the form of cash money payments that he receives every week and immediately uses to buy more DVDs.  So join us each week as he takes a look at new DVD releases and gives his highly unqualified opinion as to which titles are worth BUYing, which are better off as RENTals, and which should be AVOIDed at all costs. Click on any of the titles below to magically head over to Amazon.com and pick up the DVD.  And don't forget to check out Neil Miller's hilariously titled This Week In Blu-ray column for reviews on the latest high definition Blu-ray releases! Fred Dekker on Night of the Creeps 2 and The Monster Squad Remake

16 October 2009 7:55 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The prolific cult director also talks about directing

Fans of true cult cinema have a reason to rejoice this Halloween season, as Fred Dekker, the mastermind behind the hugely popular The Monster Squad, is finally bringing his elusive, long absent underground horror hit Night of the Creeps to DVD and Blu-ray on October 27th. To help celebrate the release, we recently caught up with the prolific director for a no holds barred interview that covers his whole career (including his own ruminations about the much maligned RoboCop 3 some fifteen years after its release). It's a great interview that you can read below in our DVD section. While discussing Night of the Creeps, Dekker spoke more about his plans for a sequel which would reunite the entire cast some twenty years after the events of that faithful night in 1986. He also discussed the upcoming Rob Cohen remake of his beloved The Monster Squad, »

Fred Dekker Revisits The Night of the Creeps!

16 October 2009 7:44 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The most elusive cult creeper ever made finally makes its way to DVD and Blu-ray October 27th!

Night of the Creeps has become one of the most sought after late night cult creepers ever made. After hitting the video store circuit in the mid-80s on VHS tape (and VHS alone), the film quickly disappeared. It would later crawl out from late night cable television on that rare occasion, like some long dormant creature hungry for flesh. It's never been re-released on any medium, and has only made a handful of appearances at the local midnight theater. Despite that fact, Fred Dekker's amazing 1986 ode to aliens, zombies, and high school romps has developed a rabid following over the years. Revolving around squirmy black leeches that possess a town full of teenagers and treats them like puppets on prom night, it's a hard film to shake. And the fact that »
